I made a little wiki page on formatting https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/formatting-trisquel-forum
Re: [Trisquel-users] What games do you play on your computers
Yes, it looks similar to Fallout. Even if it's unfinished, if we can manage to free it, I think what has been done will still be fun to play.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Software installation for Gnubies
I have a basic question in this matter, too: Why does it sometimes take sooo long to update software packages in the repo? My example is the email client Claws. In the repo there is still version 3.9.3, and it even has ubuntu in its name, which apparently means it is a package taken from Ubuntu. But already one year ago Claws 3.11 was made ready for Ubuntu - at least in this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~claws-mail/+archive/ubuntu/ppa And a few days ago Claws 3.13 was released. Why are we still limited to such an old version?

[Trisquel-users] Re : Deleted default panel
You can (re)move some hidden file (i.e., whose name starts with dot) inside your home directory. More precisely, I believe the configuration for the GNOME panel is in a subdirectory of ~/.config (if you remove the whole ~/.config directory, many application will come back to their default settings).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Making radeon work again by bringing back Linux-libre 3.4
If you see any graphics on screen then you have 2d. And some 2d acceleration method is being used. Which one works best depends on what card you have. (and what kernel and what xserver versions you have) The only way to find out is to try. Unless there is a massive difference you have to figure out a way to measure the performance. On the other hand then it doesn't really matter.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with VLC disconnecting from live streams
I have read the manual but don't understand how that will work with a live stream. Do you think curl has a similar option? Thanks!

It seems to be working fine. Could you explain the difference between the two? What did you change that caused the bug?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Making radeon work again by bringing back Linux-libre 3.4
That probably is so but if you look at the name of the preference in question, you see it's acceleration method, not whether to use acceleration.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Katakana does not show up correctly in QT5
the second one (qt_squares) is broken, and the result is not predictable. I could try to use a newer version of Qt on debian in a vm for a quick test, or test on ubuntu and file the bug to ubuntu.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Making radeon work again by bringing back Linux-libre 3.4
There's a such thing as 2-D hardware acceleration, and not having it doesn't mean you can't see graphics at all. It just means it's rendered in a less efficient way. If anything, 2-D hardware acceleration being missing is likely to be so unnoticeable that it's pretty much impossible to tell whether your system supports it. It's such a marginal benefit in most cases that tutorials for Pygame actually actively recommend that you don't bother taking advantage of it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with VLC disconnecting from live streams
For example go here (random example) https://www.internet-radio.com/stations/80s/ Note the channel called "Easy Hits Florida"? One of the playlist formats they offer is M3U. Right click the link, copy link location. Pop open a terminal, mkdir you a new folder and cd into it. Then run wget -i "paste the link here". Now wget will start sucking in the stream, in this case to index.html file. Looks like totem is too dumb to handle the file. VLC on the other hand will play the file.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Retrieve pictures from Samsung cellphone
In the past I did exactly that, but the cheesy adapter was showing signs of wearing out, so I decided to use the original charger/USB cable instead, because it's better made. Maybe someone here can suggest a USB adapter that will work reliably. As an example, I have an old Dell Inspiron laptop whose built-in card reader broke before all the other parts of the machine started falling apart ... which inspired me to switch to my present Lenovo T420 with this forum's excellent advice.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Retrieve pictures from Samsung cellphone
See the first few lines of my first post: > [ 305.233670] usb 1-1.1: new high-speed USB device number 6 using ehci-pci > [ 305.321930] usb 1-1.1: New USB device found, idVendor=04e8, idProduct=6640 > [ 305.321941] usb 1-1.1: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 > [ 305.321947] usb 1-1.1: Product: OEMSAMSUNG_Brew_SCH-U680 > [ 305.321952] usb 1-1.1: Manufacturer: SAMSUNG Electronics Co.,Ltd. That's exactly what the ID card of my phone says (underneath the phone's battery). At the phone end, when I plug in the USB cable, I am presented with a choice between charging the phone's battery or doing a USB transfer. The phone continues to present itself for access when I try everything I can think of with the terminal to find out where in /dev/ the blasted thing is located ... dmesg seems to be telling me it's in several places at once while the error messages tell me that the mount command isn't finding anything at those places. The USB card adapter has no trouble whatsoever mounting & moving files in & out of the card with linux.

Re: [Trisquel-users] What makes a good community
She doesn't explicitly say that she wants to silence people or control their speech, but how exactly do you think implementing her 6-step plan for "reaching the goal of a diverse community"? One of two things is true: either she is naïve about the nature of humans, or she wants to force people to behave a particular way. Either way, suppressing speech is the only possible way to do what she suggests. Of course, if you own a server, there's nothing wrong with having rules or guidelines regarding what kinds of things people are allowed to post there. After all, it's your server. But this woman, and other social justice warriors, has a belief that it is a moral obligation for other server owners -- like whoever owns the server(s) running the Linux developer discussion channels -- to regulate speech for her benefit. No, that isn't right. If she wants to start her own special safe space for people like her who just can't take the environment run by Mr. Torvalds et al, she can make it herself. Additionally, if she gets her way, it will not end there. She will claim victory, but then she will claim that there is another problem that needs to be solved, again, inevitably by authoritarian means. Because this isn't actually about a community. It's about her. And as long as she blames problems she has on the community, rather than e.g. growing a thicker skin like the rest of us, it will never be satisfactory. So no, what she is advocating is not right. Any community which tries to embrace her ideas will only suffer harm. Of course, that doesn't mean it's wrong for her to express her views; to say otherwise would be something an SJW would do.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Software installation for Gnubies
Triskello 7 is based on the LTS Ubununtu, hence the only upgrades you get is the security upgrades, the browser and maybe few other things I ignore. cheers
Re: [Trisquel-users] Modernizing the Trisquel forums
I pretty much agree with this. There are only four problems with the Trisquel forum/mailing list system: Firstly, the lack of a reporting mechanism for spam and suchlike. I can understand the possibility for abuse though, so I am somewhat ambivalent about this. Secondly, the lack of a proper LibreJS support on the Trisquel site (which is something we really should have, considering IceCat and all). Thirdly, the lack of a dedicated announcement subforum and complementary mailing list. Finally, the lack of a mailing list for the Troll Hole. These are all things I think could be added to the existing functionality (how hard can it be?). One final note is the whole issue to do with threads getting squashed when there are lots of replies- this is a minor concern since exchanges rarely get this long anyway.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Modernizing the Trisquel forums
Let's not forget post nesting. That's buggy as all hell and should probably be removed altogether. Just list posts chronologically like most forums do, and make the "reply" buttons for individual posts insert a quote or something.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Software installation for Gnubies
16.04. Ubuntu's version numbers are based on the dates they're released on, so dropping the second half makes the indication ambiguous (16.04 and 16.10 will be completely different releases, one of them an LTS release and one of them an STS release).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Modernizing the Trisquel forums
I think both BBcode and HTML are allowed for formatting- though the e-mails sent from Drupal seem to be stripped down to plaintext.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Re : Spam ... Spam Everywhere!
Not only should there be *actual* freedom of speech (rather than the perverse reverse discrimination against the 'trisquel troll squad') but communities should also be allowed to form their own opinions on various posts and posters. The upvote/downvote tool is a manifestation of the collective opinion. That way, disliked posts can be dispatched without all the bother of trying to actually debate trolls.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Software installation for Gnubies
Trisquel 7 is based on Ubunty 14.04 Trusty Tahr LTS. This means that although there may be incremental version number increases and security patches, there won't really be any major new versions until Trisquel 8, which will be based on Ubuntu 16. I think.
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Katakana does not show up correctly in QT5
Does the problem only occur with katakana or also with hiragana?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Katakana does not show up correctly in QT5
The first thing I would check is the font being used. Perhaps, for example, you're using a font that supports traditional Chinese but doesn't have proper Japanese support. Or perhaps you're accidentally switching between different fonts, and one of them doesn't work.

Re: [Trisquel-users] ASUS Chromebook C201 now supported in libreboot - ARM CPU
the video a mali GPU, there's the unreleased lima driver that we hope we can convince the developer to release and polish (ask paulk about that). Until then, you have to use it without video acceleration (just software rendering) to keep your freedom
Re: [Trisquel-users] ASUS Chromebook C201 now supported in libreboot - ARM CPU
About the wifi, the built in wifi needs blobs (chip is soldered) but you can use a USB dongle. ThinkPenguin and Tehnoetic sell these, there are also other AR9271 dongles that you can find online. So, at least some choices there. I've not used this laptop yet, but will get one soon. Paul Kocialkowski from the Replicant project ported it to libreboot. He's working on documentation (including installation instructions) at the time of writing, last I spoke to him on IRC. The actual board support is in libreboot, and it builds (and works). It'll likely be some time before next release, but you can build it from libreboot.git. Follow the instructions on http://libreboot.org/docs/git/index.html

[Trisquel-users] ASUS Chromebook C201 now supported in libreboot - ARM CPU
From IRC: http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/libreboot.git/commit/?id=d8b597f33e75d04b84be7c9d7081a3b97821617d ASUS Chromebook C201 support in libreboot issues: * Needs blobs for video acceleration (in linux kernel) - optional, can do most things without acceleration * Needs blobs for wifi (in linux kernel) - optional, can use ar9271 usb dongle or similar advantages: * Free EC firmware * smaller than an X60, more portable * long battery life Disadvantages: * No FSF endorsed distros available on ARM yet. Mark Weaver of Guix has expressed interest in porting Guix to these laptops * Libreboot will (for now) recommend Debian or Fedora, with blobs removed, for these laptops This uses the rockchip rk3288 SoC there are many other laptops in coreboot that use the same SoC, so things are looking good btw, I didn't do this, talk to paulk if you have questions I need to get myself one of these laptops it's not RYF ready (probably won't be), but it's more free than an X60/X200 if you do without the video/wifi blobs (so, use linux-libre instead of linux) this is way more RMS-friendly than an X60/X200 :) Kind of disappointed that I had to post this myself ;)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Netflix/Hulu?
I demand that Netflix and Hulu develop an ASCII art browser video plugin for those of us who are still using dial up! Ok, just kidding. But really...I have been a long time Ubuntu user and would really like to switch to trisquel as I find more and more to DISABLE and uninstall to keep my computer tolerable. But I really fear that things have gone to far toward ultra capitalist, passed the tipping point to borrow the media buzzword. I mean I tried running Debian once and it was just miserable. Websites all felt broken; DVDs useless; mp3s, m4a of course don't work...unless I install about a million packages and convert my computer to Deb-buntu. Is it just me or do terms like "technological protection measures" and "digital rights management" sound like Orwell, Rand, or Huxley made them up? I hate how corporate the internet has become, yet I want to have a computer that works for more than bitching in forums.

Just the 1st Unreal Engine. It's ultra tweaked for DX mods and actually well known, but nobody dares to recreate it under a libre license, sadly.

Re: [Trisquel-users] ASUS Chromebook C201 now supported in libreboot - ARM CPU
Thanks, nice, one more! But I think, that buying that trashbook (piece of VIH), it wasting your money. So, too blobed hardware, soldered proprietary wifi, ARM, bad support for ARM, proprietary GPU... It would better getting a Thinkpad x60, t60, Macbook 2,1, and flashing it yourself. Or buying T400, x200 from MiniFree/Gluglug. So, I can not understand, why this Trashbook/Proprietarybook is more free that Librebooted Thinkpads?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Really really lost :(
Ah, that's why. Your WiFi needs proprietary software in order to do anything at all. Trisquel, by its nature, doesn't include any proprietary software in it which is why your WiFi doesn't work. I recommend replacing the WiFi card with something else. If you don't want to open the computer there's an easy option that plugs into a free USB port: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb
Re: [Trisquel-users] Flyer Ideas about distributed computing
Also, please don't use the term "closed source"; use instead "proprietary software". The FSF has a list of words to avoid: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html

Re: [Trisquel-users] ASUS Chromebook C201 now supported in libreboot - ARM CPU
On the other hand, it fails to meet RYF criteria because users would be too tempted to install the blobs for wifi and video acceleration. There are RYF endorsed laptops sold by Minifree and Libiquity which come with libreboot preinstalled.
