Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 is almost 6 months late. Do something. Anything.
Due to an array of critical security vulnerabilities, it is definitely time to push an update to the users. I've migrated my systems away from Trisquel until the issue is resolved. Debian without enabling the non-free repository is a good alternative option.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
If you want to help with development, the documentation is here: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/development-0 And the source code is here: https://devel.trisquel.info/groups/trisquel You can try to get pull requests from git that ruben can import and save him some time, but afaik everything still goes through him before being pushed.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Saying Good-bye to Windows
Awesome! One benefit of Windows 10 being so draconian is that it's pushing people into using alternatives. If we can people into trying out GNU/Linux instead of Apple we might have a shot at dramatically increasing the number of GNU/Linux users and spreading free software. :)

To change your e-mail on these forums just navigate to: The Sidbar's My Account -- Edit then -- Personal Information Regarding changing your e-mail entirely, you should be able to setup an e-mail forwarder to your new e-mail, then just e-mail all your contacts (be sure to use BCC) and let them know of your new address.
Re: [Trisquel-users] remember the Samsung Galaxy backdoor?
The researcher is saying it is a bug not a backdoor, that allowed for directory traversal and possible an exploit. More on this: https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Path_Traversal Keep in mind Heartbleed was also a bug but convenient enough that it may have been used as a backdoor. We may never know if the bug was intentional or a typo, a problem in even open source software - since people fail to properly audit the code.

[Trisquel-users] The Need for Free and Open HardDrive firmware
As you may have heard in the news recently, Western Digital, Seagate, and Toshiba are all vulnerable to firmware exploitation and low-level malware hosting. News source: http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/digital-living/66279485/nsa-hiding-equation-spy-program-on-hard-drives The problem with infecting this layer is that no free or open source firmware exists, and very little effort has been done about it. There are very few attempts to reverse engineer it as well... https://www.reddit.com/r/ReverseEngineering/comments/1g8kzc/hdd_firmware_where_to_start/ I think now is a good time to start looking into this for the FSF community.
Re: [Trisquel-users] can you get i2p on raspberry pi and use computer to access?
I've not tried it but it seems possible assuming I2P runs (uses Java which eats loads of ram). You can access it via SSH, Found this: http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=videos/i2p-darknet-hidden-servers Alternatively, TOR uses less ram and could also do this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to enable bluetooth?
It may have been a regression, or you just disabled it. This copied from Ubuntu wiki (which shares the same code base as trisquel): To manually configure bluetooth, you will need: sudo apt-get install bluez python-gobject python-dbus python-gobject and python-dbus are needed for the python scripts bluez-simple-agent and bluez-test-device to work. Discover the hciX location of the dongle with: hcitool dev Devices: hci000:11:95:00:1A:CF (i) Your Bluetooth device will have a different id. sudo bluez-simple-agent hci0 XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX is the MAC or BT ADD or BlueTooth Address of the bt device. Press the reset or pair button on your keyboard, simple-agent will ask to specify a pin like , then type that pin on the bt keyboard and your bt keyboard is paired. sudo bluez-test-device trusted XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX yes To set the device as trusted sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart To restart the bluetooth daemon. Check if the device is added: dmesg|tail The last lines will list your device.

RE: Can any Trisquelers help me? What do I do? We have two LG Smart TV's and a Panasonic Smart Viera. Re: [Trisquel-users] online-shopping with tor? torify everything?
I would second that a trusted VPN is a far better choice for this purpose. You can get a rating of VPNs that don't sell you out here: http://torrentfreak.com/which-vpn-services-take-your-anonymity-seriously-2014-edition-140315/ TOR is meant for browsing anonymously, but as they say during the download of the browser bundle - bad habits will breach that anonymity. Logging into your google/facebook/shopping over TOR is dangerous because: 1) Evil TOR Exit nodes that can SSL strip and read try and steal your credit card. 2) Provides a clear link to you specifically even though they might not know precisely which location you are coming from. Useful to keep tracking your unique metadata/analytics. 3) Credit Card providers will often flag purchases during the verification process if using TOR, since they check your IP during checkout. There used to be a considerably large database tracking rouge exit nodes, this site shows but a few: http://torstatus.blutmagie.de/index.php?SR=FBadExitSO=Desc Further thoughts on using TOR properly: http://lifehacker.com/how-can-i-stay-anonymous-with-tor-1498876762

Re: [Trisquel-users] Abroswer Start Page Search Bar
I can confirm the about:home page has an anti-feature that you have discovered, I have filed a bug report here: https://trisquel.info/en/issues/13112 Normally, you would type about:config and search for browser.search.defaultenginename and change it to your desired search engine. Or for older versions of Mozilla based browsers you also had to change the chromeappsstore.sqlite file in your Profile Folder, information here for reference: https://support.mozilla.org/hu/questions/779082 However, someone decided to hardcode the DuckDuckGo search engine into the page located in the zipped file /usr/lib/abrowser/browser/omni.ja - you can edit it via 'mkdir ~/omniunpacked', 'unzip omni.ja -d ~/omniunpacked' cd ~/omniunpacked/chrome/browser/content/browser/abouthome, nano aboutHome.xhtml, then replace the entire searchContainer div with the official one: http://pastebin.com/z4eeQ0mM Naturally this method is semi-dangerous since you can break aBrowser and is totally unessecary since it's easy to fix from the developer side. So we'll see if this bug gets fixed in future versions. :-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Isn't chromium-browser opensource?
It is Open Source but not Free Software, the main difference being it suggests non-free plugins and includes many anti-features. I actually had wanted Google Chrome and/or Chromium myself when I first switched to GNU/Linux. Whereas would be possible to do, large amounts of code would need to be reviewed and removed. FYI - Free vs. OpenSource: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-software-for-freedom.html Lintian Report also exposed several licensing violations: https://lintian.debian.org/full/pkg-chromium-ma...@lists.alioth.debian.org.html#chromium-browser_38.0.2125.101-3 And here's a few anti-features - * Installation-ID - A copy of Google Chrome includes a generated installation number which will be sent to Google after the installation and the first usage. It gets deleted when Chrome checks first time for updates. If Chrome is received as part of a promotional campaign, it may generate a unique promotion number which is sent to Google on the first run and first use of Google Chrome. * Suggestions - Depending on the configuration, each time you put something in the address line, this information is sent to Google to provide suggestions. * Error Pages - Depending on the configuration, if you have typed a false address in the adress bar, this is sent to Google and you get an error message from Google's servers. * Error Reporting - Depending on the configuration, details about crashes or failures are sent Google's servers. * RLZ Tracking - This Chrome-function transmits information in encoded form to Google, for example, when and where Chrome has been downloaded. * Google Updater - Chrome installs a updater, which loads at every Windows in background. * URL-Tracker - Calls depending on the configuration five seconds after launch the Google homepage opens in background * non-Free Adobe Flash plugin For those reasons and more, I don't think including Chromium would be a good idea. Now if someone wants to take on Chromium-Libre and patch it, I would be interested. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] GNU LibreJs on Tor Browser
As others mentioned it would hurt fingerprinting, test here for example: https://panopticlick.eff.org I think by default TOR Browser doesn't allow foreign extensions (for your security). It would be possible to override this at your own peril. You could accomplish similar simply by using GNUIceCat and TOR. My personal rant: The defaults in TOR Browser (NoScript Globally enabled) are very bad for security. - So it's up to you wether you wish to compromise security over discoverability.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where do you buy printed books online?
I will admit I have purchased some items I could find nowhere else on Amazon. However, I am constantly looking for alternatives. I wouldn't say Amazon is a would be threat, it is a threat to free software and to privacy world-wide. One day, Bezos marched into Steve Kessel's office and gave an order: I want you to proceed as if your goal is to put everyone selling physical books out of a job, he said. Kessel's role up until then had been assuaging book publishers so that they'd feel comfortable selling their used books on Amazon. -- source: http://www.inc.com/krasny/jeff-bezos-recipe-for-disruption.html Spyware toolbar acquired: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexa_Toolbar Also Amazon has been pushing hard to force them out of the market by having people send to them (and only them), new releases, exclusive products, etc. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2415678,00.asp -- So that being said, I found a few alternatives during my search - There are a few places you can purchase books for bitcoin directly without using Amazon, and there are also local bookstores (though they are becoming more consolidated as well - e.g. BarnesNoble). You'll want to make sure they are not giving into Amazon, ask them. You can also search Amazon and try to contact a seller (ensure they are not an Fulfilled-by-Amazon seller, since this simply means you're still buying from Amazon directly.). Explain to them that you are looking for store discounts and would like to purchase and have your product shipped directly to help their small business. I've seen several companies willing to do this, and sometimes you get a better deal as well. There are also places where you can swap and trade books. This is probably the most ethical solution currently. You can use Reddit for example: https://pay.reddit.com/r/bookexchange

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is OpenDNS safe to use?
OpenDNS is fair, however I have never seen them deny keeping logs. OpenNIC is the best alternative since a majority of their user operated servers on purposely don't log your DNS queries. http://www.opennicproject.org/ Additionally you can still use DNSCrypt which adds considerably strong security against DNS leaking. http://dnscrypt.org/ As others mentioned however, DNS is not a do all. You will need to use other methods to protect all internet traffic.

Re: [Trisquel-users] SSH Server Enabled By Default!
WOW, this is a major issue. Not because it's SSH, but because it's the MOST INSECURE SSH setup I've ever seen. Just tested scanning my local area network running a Trisquel box. It runs on a default port with password based authentication (no KEYS!). What this means essentially is any script kiddie in the world can run a dictionary attack against all your local user accounts and gain remote access to your files. Writing the developer mailing list about this seriously messed up default right now...

Re: [Trisquel-users] securing trisquel
Regarding original post, firewall is the least of the concern here. * All public hotspots are hackable. * HTTPS doesn't help much thanks to old implementations of SSL and SSLStrip. You should: 1) Use a reputable VPN service to protect anyone from both gaining access to your computer as well as seeing your data as mentioned above. Good list: https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-services-that-take-your-anonymity-seriously-2013-edition/ * Parabola GNU/Linux community uses: LibreVPN - una red libre virtual (I have not tested it but it is free and supports free software so they may interest you as well) 2) Encrypt DNS. The last issue here is you can have a great VPN and experience DNS poisoning which will land you on a phishing site to someone else on the hotspot. You'll want to use: http://dnscrypt.org/ 3) Tor as mentioned above can help... however using it alone does not help you and in some cases if not used properly can actually make you more vulnerable than not. TRENDnet makes GNU/Linux friendly modems, I used to have their TFM-560X 56k modem with TU-S9 serial to usb adapter and it worked fine with wvdialconf and then gnome-ppp. I imagine their newer direct usb modems would work fine too.

Their relatives can renew the patent and patents can also be sold and renewed by the new owners as I understand it. A bigger issue than this is: http://gigaom.com/2013/11/26/troll-wins-newegg-encryption-patent-case-threatening-web-firms-that-protect-customers/ Now we're talking people actually lessening the web's security for the sake of $$. Re: [Trisquel-users] Free Clarendon!
https://www.legalzoom.com/intellectual-property-rights/intellectual-property-basics/selling-patent-copyright-or http://info.legalzoom.com/renew-patent-23430.html Plant patents and utility patents last up to 20 years from the date of application, while patents for designs last up to 14 years from the date of application. Plant and utility patents granted prior to 1995 last 17 years. Interestingly they must be renewed every 20 years, however they can be sold to others. I'd be curious how 150 years has worked for this patent as well, considering it is unlikely the guy lived this long and renewed every time, or that the new holder was so vigilant. :s

Re: [Trisquel-users] Intel processor microcode security update for Trisquel
Hmm sad to see all the flamewar above, but back on topic. 1) I find it very strange that there has been no public announcement of which exploit or vulnerability the proposed patch fixes. Where's the changelog?? The very vague information I found on Intel's website doesn't leave me wanting to install the patch even if it were good. Patches can have unintended consequences and break other things. 2) The entire code is heavily obfuscated and no telling what is in it. Backdoors are possible. 3) The code does not patch the Intel chipset per-say, it runs quote at system boot. If it were a real patch I would certainly hope it would flash the chipset, rather than installing something as root into my operating system and running at boot time. I suggest everyone write to Intel and ask: 1) What does the microcode fix exactly 2) Why not opensource it?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Hey jxself, can we get linux-generic-lts-raring and linux-generic-lts-saucy kernels?
The oh you need this done? here's the source code so do it yourself free software mentality is very common and thrown around a lot. It is like you owning a car and your transmission goes out and someone tells you that anything is possible if you learn how to fix it and do it yourself. Actually that's great if you're mechanically inclined because it's cheaper to fix it yourself and you'll learn how to do it, perhaps from a
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Trisquel Without an Internet Connection
I installed using the normal mode (Live CD Use installer from desktop) and it works offline. It should be possible with text mode too, just skip the part that asks to configure networking and make sure it's unplugged from the internet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Artificial Intelligence Project
Any program can be abused. However, strong AI to me personally seems... like not a good idea. Take for example the great example in Tron. In man's attempt to create a perfect system he creates Clue! xD Regardless there are some people working on them: https://duckduckgo.com/html/?q=artificial+intelligence+opensource Some of the simplest AI would be from an: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRC_bot I've dabbled slightly with them and made them carry on conversations but nothing else overly meaningful. And nothing that could compete with the infamous Wolfram Alpha's Sentient Code.
Re: [Trisquel-users] TV phones home with your viewing habits, names of files you screen, even if you tell it not to
It would be a bit ridiculous, but yes you can run IPTables on the router and do netfiltering. You'd need to analyze the spyware and drop all packets from offending IPs and/or whitelist only the good IP addresses and block everything else. Obviously the latter would make surfing the internet useless. You can also specifically block urls via dd-wrt, I assume LibreWRT may be able to do the same: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Access_Restrictions
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble with Brasero
This appears to be a known bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/+bug/504645 One option is to convert to MP3 and burn: http://askubuntu.com/questions/62168/can-how-to-burn-a-flac-to-an-audio-cd I would imagine using ogg may also work.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't run virtual machine in virtualbox
Sounds like the kernel module didn't compile. Try installing virtualbox-dkms pacakge. Additionally running sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup in a terminal should work too. If the module fails to compile you may need a -generic kernel with headers; and if all else fails you might want to try QEMU Launcher which is an alternate virtual machine application. VBox is being phased out due to the latest version being requiring non-free programs to compile it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Let's make FLOSS out of Winamp! Petition to AOL.
audacious is basically winamp and can use winamp skins, however it would be useful for this project to be opensource. The one problem with this petition is it seems to imply: 1) Keep WinAmp alive! 2) If not alive make it opensource... I would say Winamp should be opensourced with a free software license dead or alive. :D

Re: [Trisquel-users] How do I set up a mail server?
I would also be very interested in how to do this, however it seems that even if you do manage to get an e-mail server going - 90% of the internet corporations (e.g. yahoo/gmail/hotmail) will block you as a sender with Error 550 because it is coming from an unapproved sender. I have heard adjusting SPF records may solve this problem but I haven't had any luck, it seems to me they are just blocking any residential ip range and saying you must be spam, forget you. Similar to what Michal said above. Though I would love an infographic or video tutorial on the VPN/relay solution - it sounds incredibly technical for most users...

[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 6.0 LTS aMule Mirror
Hello All, I've mirrored the Trisquel installer onto aMule, if anyone is interested it uses the classic KAD and ed2k network. It's an old P2P protocol but still a goodie. Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
1) Trisquel Doesn't spy on you; Windows 7 does. 2) Trisquel let's you run unix applications; Windows 7 has non-free cygwin but it's just not the same. 3) Trisquel let's you recover a Windows PC from a LiveCD; Windows 7 doesn't have a LiveCD officially and BartPE imo doesn't do as good of a job. 4) Trisquel let's you easily host your own servers; Windows 7 after disabling multiple firewalls and UAC settings let's you do the same but is likely more vunerable to malicious attackers. 5) Trisquel is open-source so you can modify whatever you want; Windows 7 is a buggy black box. Yes, it's not as user-friendly as some Windows 7 features and hardware support, but with tweaking and continued bugs filed against the right packages it is my hope it one day will be. :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Replacing Web Browser
I'm not at my Trisquel box right now, but I think will do it: To add a new item to update-alternatives, use the following options. Code: update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/$LINK $PROVIDES /usr/bin/$BIN $XX So for example... (Assuming Luajit is not available in the --config list for /usr/bin/lua) If The link I'm updating is /usr/bin/lua, which provides lua-interpreter. I want to add Luajit, with a priority of 90, to the /usr/bin/lua link. Code: update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/lua lua-interpreter /usr/bin/luajit-2.0.0-beta8 90 I'm providing the correct answer so it will be available, for anyone who lands here from Google. I hate having high relevancy results, not provide the appropriate information. I'm aware this is a 3+ years old thread. BTW, update-alternatives is a Debian family specific command. I wouldn't need to be told explicitly which distro someone uses, to address something implicitly distro specific. -- Source: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/how-to-add-a-program-to-update-alternatives-631303/#post4544616 So you just compile an application and tell update-alternatives where it is and then set it from there so it deploys system wide. In your case the $PROVIDE will be x-www-browser. Hope this helps. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Copying large file to Replicant phone
I would suggest asking in #replicant on freenode irc as it may be a replicant bug. Have you tested transferring with a different storage device?

Re: [Trisquel-users] abrowser uninstallation
I believe because this is a core package the system is hickuping over removal since there will be no default browser. (e.g. update-alternatives) To see current default (should be aBrowser): sudo update-alternatives --display x-www-browser To change this see here: https://wiki.debian.org/FAQ/Gnome You can try setting Midori as default while you reinstall aBrowser. sudo apt-get install midori Then see debian FAQ above on setting it as default. For complete removal and re-install of aBrowser let's try... sudo apt-get remove --purge abrowser Delete .mozilla/abrowser/ in your home directory, should it still be there Delete /etc/abrowser/, this is where your preferences and user-profiles are stored Delete /usr/lib/abrowser/ should it still be there Delete /usr/lib/abrowser-addons/ should it still be there Then to install it again: sudo apt-get install abrowser sudo apt-get update apt-get upgrade (just to be safe and up-to-date.) And use Debian FAQ to set it as default. If that still doesn't work there are some more down and dirty methods of forcing it to bypass the error, but I'm hoping that will work for you. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Removing Trisquel in windows problem
I do not have Windows 8 and many users here likely do not have it either, however you may find this of help: You should be able to do this via the Trisquel Live CD. Go to Trisquel Accessories Terminal Install efibootmgr by typing: sudo apt-get install efibootmgr Then add to the kernel efi support: sudo modprobe efivars Then run sudo efibootmgr to check your boot entries. It will return something like this: BootCurrent: 0004 Timeout: 2 seconds BootOrder: 2001,0003,0005,0006, Boot* Lenovo Recovery System Boot0001* EFI Network 0 for IPv6 (B8-88-E3-84-F3-EF) Boot0002* EFI Network 0 for IPv4 (B8-88-E3-84-F3-EF) Boot0003* Windows Boot Manager Boot0004* EFI USB Device (SanDisk) Boot0005* Trisquel Boot2001* EFI USB Device Then delete the option you dont want. In this example, Trisquel is entry 5. the following could be called to delete entry 5 and remove it from the Boot Order. sudo efibootmgr -b 5 -B - Source: http://askubuntu.com/questions/63610/how-do-i-remove-ubuntu-in-the-bios-boot-menu
Re: [Trisquel-users] abrowser uninstallation
Interesting. Can you run: file /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser And if it exists paste the content of the file here via: gedit /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser Sounds like it got deleted or corrupted as you mentioned.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with Abrowser Update
The problem is due to the t=trisquel being hardcoded as the default search engine in the browser during compile. You will find that the keyword.url is set here on line 74: http://devel.trisquel.info/gitweb/?p=package-helpers.git;a=blob;f=helpers/make-ubufox;h=0c4c42197c038738e8d9ef45f9e07f4c06802822 However, the part you are referring to is actually set here on line 212: http://devel.trisquel.info/gitweb/?p=package-helpers.git;a=blob;f=helpers/make-firefox;h=c81a6dee50f0058e093323c16341c0f87d91717f;hb=1c2440e15682d518a7349f76fa9ca0f9c0aae83d It seems keyword.url was depreciated upstream by FireFox; not aBrowser. The solution to remove this is fairly simple however. Go to https://duckduckgo.com/html then in the opensearch box (the one containing all the default search engines) at the bottom you will see: Add DuckDuckGo (HTML). Click that and make sure to Start using right away. Once you have this search engine enabled you will find that the address bar (or keyword.url as it was previously known) is now set to the currently set OpenSearch one. You can change the address search at any time via the Search Engine dropdown; and you can add/remove search engines from the Manage Search Engines window. Hope this helps! :)

+1 on the OpenNIC reference. Definitely recommended and will solve the DNS poisoning problem. Their site: http://www.opennicproject.org/
Re: [Trisquel-users] How does Amazon track my browsed items?
Amazon utilizes several tracking methods. * Third-Parties (including devices with Amazon Cloud, music apps, ebook readers, etc.) * Session Cookies * Ever-Cookies/DOM (Most important) * Referrer Tracking * Click-Handling I don't think they are tracking browser fingerprints, or if they do it doesn't really affect the site. But it doesn't hurt to use FireGloves just the same. To stop what oralfloss was saying, you will need to have DOM AND session cookies disabled. This can be achieved with Cookie-Controller addon for aBrowser. Set it to Force off state at start and [Off] DOM Storage. Then try browsing Amazon and you'll find their history doesn't work. Additionally they make heavy use of click-handlers. These are urls which track you when they can't get you from anything else. Luckily we have another addon for that known as Clean Links. However by default it won't help you. You'll need to make some adjustments that I just wipped up tonight to make it work properly. 1) Under the Clean Link Addon Preferences Remove From Links Field where it says (?:ref|aff)\w*, add these unique identifiers (|place|pr|pf_rd_m|pf_rd_s|pf_rd_t|pf_rd_p|pf_rd_i|ld|pf_rd_r). When your done it should like like this: (?:ref|aff|place|pr|pf_rd_m|pf_rd_s|pf_rd_t|pf_rd_p|pf_rd_i|ld|pf_rd_r)\w*|utm_\w+|(?:merchant|programme|media)ID (You can copy+paste the above into the Remove From Links field if in doubt) *Note: I cannot guarentee all those extra rules won't break other sites, but as of right now it seems OK for me and works nicely on Amazon.com 2) Uncheck Event Delegation Mode 3) Check Use Redirect Watcher 4) Wipe Out Skip Domains, the guy probably got paid off by Google,FaceBook, Linkedin, et all. which are in that whitelist. 5) Highlight Cleaned Links. 6) Go to Amazon (get your sunglasses ready for all those yellow cleaned links!) Lastly, they track purchase habbits. So as soon as you login and buy they're going to have that data and give you targeted suggestions. Some of which are configurable your account settings but keep getting reset on each login. So have fun with continually setting those privacy settings. Oh and they completely ignore Mozilla's Do-Not-Track Header. ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gnome-Panel fails to load on startup sometimes
I have an .xsession-errors log from the affected computer, including it below: http://pastebin.com/v2Ehx6zh If others could post their /home/user/.xsession-errors log it may help us track down the culprit. Likely compiz, but not sure will need to do further testing...
[Trisquel-users] Gnome-Panel fails to load on startup sometimes
Hello, I installed Trisquel for someone and they are saying that the taskbar (a.k.a. gnome3 fallback's gnome-panel) fails to load and they have to Ctrl+Alt+Delete and reboot to get it back. This sounds like a bug, but I no longer use Gnome3 myself. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this problem before or knew how to get a proper debug log without too much work? That way I can have the bug filed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Qsampler has no use
Has anyone tried contacting the developers to change their current licesning? It really makes no sense, it's already GPL and companies are already going to steal the code if they wanted to. So holding LinuxSampler back for this is really sad...
[Trisquel-users] Building a Google Products Alternative?
Hello All, I have been thinking for some time about this, and it seems there is no current alternative to Google Products, BizRate, etc. Additionally, the non-free ones mentioned do not respect ethical issues by primarily supporting eBay/Amazon.com and others. http://stallman.org/amazon.html So, I'm throwing this out there in hopes that others might find such a project interesting and help me get in touch with the right people and legal jargon needed to get this idea working. 1) Build and Open/Libre Database. The first thing we may need to do, is recreate UPCDatabase.com, as this site no longer allows free access to the database. Google Products and others use this database often to take a title/keyword and then crawl for it on the web based on it's likely UPC/EAN. 2) Create a universal and open template for submitting feeds. Current non-free feeds and methods: https://www.singlefeed.com/partners/engines.php http://www.cpcstrategy.com/blog/2009/10/sample-data-feeds-and-feed-specifications-for-comparison-shopping-engines/ This feed would need to include: Everything required to help find and generate quality listings, at minimum - Title, Description, GTIN, Image, Price,Sale Price, Shipping Cost, Quantity(?). * Fulfillment method - e.g. what third-party (such as Amazon) is shipping the items, or self. * Hardware id. For querying h-node compatibility of electronic goods. * Licensing??? Perhaps GNUFDL/CC0, or who knows. 3) Ability to detect freedom issues - * Query known unethical manufacturers: http://www.knowmore.org/ with icon * Query known good foods: http://howgood.com/ with icon * Give Respect Your Freedom icon on known fully free hardware. * Flag anyone detected using a monopoly like Amazon ? * Give major sites eBay/Amazon bottom priority, or non at all. In this way independent websites will once again get SEO and people wanting to support small businesses can easily do so. 4) Implement this as an open standard and make it Decentralized. This should be built easily into a retailers site in such a way YaCY and Seeks nodes understand (will require an upstream bug). It may be as easy as a sitemaps.xml-like implementation, a meta tag, or a specific location on websites. This does two fold, keeps people from having to send feeds to third parties, and allows anyone to crawl a site to find the data so that no single source holds the database. And since it is an open standard, DuckDuckGo could offer it centralized if they wish. 5) ??? - Such a task will require the cooperation of several already existing open projects. However I'm not sure the best way of getting them all on the same page. So hopefully this topic can help break the ice and get people looking into it. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Building a Google Products Alternative?
Ah and I almost forgot under section 2 and/or 3: * Payment methods. Paypal/Dwolla/Amazon/BTC etc. The first being the worst.
Re: [Trisquel-users] careful with PPA
Where do the packages come from that make up the Trisquel repository? Mostly directly from Ubuntu, there's a few coming direct from Debian.org. Both of which should be fine. (You can find them on the wiki under Package Helpers) You'd mostly just have to be careful on personal launchpad PPAs. You can also install more security software to evade this problem, but it becomes difficult to simply use your computer. Tripwire AppArmour SELinux (everyone trusts who makes it) :P etc.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Want to remove triskel and synaptic package manager doesn't work
Wait we have plasma-widget-facebook ... sounds non-free for ethical reasons and should be removed. http://stallman.org/facebook.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lib-Ray (A free and open high-definition video standard for fixed media: no DRM, no region codes, no secrets... No limits!)
It looks like it has good potential, it already was fully funded as of last year. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2144275086/lib-ray-non-drm-open-standards-hd-video-format Nice find!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 6.0 how to install MATE Desktop?
Fixed wiki by just adding a new section. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Possible linux trojan disguised as Tor
Best to run things in TAILS, you can use QEMU for that. Regarding TOR, it sounds odd, but is it possible you installed the TOR service? in which case: sudo service tor stop would have killed it. Alternatively next time, if you can grab the suspicious file it may be very useful to the ClamAV project.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Blacklisting certain websites from using gnash
Right click on any flash animation and click Edit Preferences - http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/4759/7y48.png Click Player tab and select Start Gnash in Pause Mode. There's also a blacklist but I've not tested it - http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/2577/dcbu.png
Re: [Trisquel-users] An alternative to skype that respects your freedom
I would personally recommended Jitsi as being the most feature complete and presumably secure... however I see it was not packaged in Debian due to a confusing build structure - http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=627362 Additionally it contained third-party libraries. Whether or not this third party code was non-blobbed and GPL compliant I do not know. Looks like they are actively working on getting it fixed though. Ya just never know these days. :P
