Re: [Trisquel-users] Thoughts on Free Software
I support totally free/libre because I enjoy making stuff for free and contributing to projects which support freedom. In turn this helps me and others not just one sole-entity or corporation which is trying to get rich and lock down the source code by not sharing it with others. There are some blockers... 1) Most "bugs" are caused by compatibility issues with non-free formats. (This includes some excel documents, 3ds Max file types, Adobe Flash, graphic cards and wireless chipsets, etc.) 2) Companies frown upon those using free software because they think it isn't good enough. The benefits: 1) I can make a zillion copies legally 2) I am helping others and usually get better support than from Microsoft regarding bugs I do find 3) No fear of embedded spyware or as Adobe likes to say "web beacons" in the software. If I'm paying for software I like to know it's not coming bundled with spyware, tracking and other nuances. User Privacy and code-transparency is a wonderful part of FOSS. If more hackers make linux easier for "human beings" we could slowly convert people to GNU/Linux. There's a lot of compatibility and more being worked on everyday. Sadly as miga stated above schools and workforce generally forces non-free software down the peoples throats. Time to resist it and promote free software as much as possible. Find a bug? Fix it, or pay a hacker to do it for you and release the code into the GPL. :) Just my two cents.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Steam client coming to Linux. Will you guys still hate it?
I wouldn't hate it, simply not use it. To be honest I have never found Steam useful on Windows - it simply downloads loads of content in the background even while ideling. There are many FOSS programs that can replace steam: http://www.desura.com/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Next Trisquel LTS
Regarding the next LTS, I think we should do what Ultimate Edition did and make it a jampacked release with many different desktop environments to choose from. KDE/Gnome3/MATE/Razor-QT/XFCE/LXDE/S3D, etc. I hadn't had a look at MATE. I think it looks quite interesting, certainly more userfriendly than Gnome 3 in my personal opinion. If we have to stick with the flow and use Unity, I think this would help considerably: http://www.unixmen.com/move-unity-launcher-to-the-bottom-with-unity-bottom-launcher-ppa-ubuntu/ Simply moving it to the bottom makes me feel MUCH more at home. Even a little WindowsSevenSins-ish... :P

Fixed wiki by just adding a new section. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Possible linux trojan disguised as Tor
Best to run things in TAILS, you can use QEMU for that. Regarding TOR, it sounds odd, but is it possible you installed the TOR service? in which case: sudo service tor stop would have killed it. Alternatively next time, if you can grab the suspicious file it may be very useful to the ClamAV project.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I found a cheap free/trisquel-compatible USB wireless network adapter on Amazon
Nice find! Thanks for sharing, I've been looking for a compatible one myself. I tried a NetGear per H-Node but it didn't work properly.
Re: [Trisquel-users] careful with PPA
"Where do the packages come from that make up the Trisquel repository?" Mostly directly from Ubuntu, there's a few coming direct from Debian.org. Both of which should be fine. (You can find them on the wiki under "Package Helpers") You'd mostly just have to be careful on personal launchpad PPAs. You can also install more security software to evade this problem, but it becomes difficult to simply use your computer. Tripwire AppArmour SELinux (everyone trusts who makes it) :P etc.

[Trisquel-users] Building a Google Products Alternative?
Hello All, I have been thinking for some time about this, and it seems there is no current alternative to Google Products, BizRate, etc. Additionally, the non-free ones mentioned do not respect ethical issues by primarily supporting eBay/Amazon.com and others. http://stallman.org/amazon.html So, I'm throwing this out there in hopes that others might find such a project interesting and help me get in touch with the right people and legal jargon needed to get this idea working. 1) Build and Open/Libre Database. The first thing we may need to do, is recreate UPCDatabase.com, as this site no longer allows free access to the database. Google Products and others use this database often to take a title/keyword and then crawl for it on the web based on it's likely UPC/EAN. 2) Create a universal and open template for submitting feeds. Current non-free feeds and methods: https://www.singlefeed.com/partners/engines.php http://www.cpcstrategy.com/blog/2009/10/sample-data-feeds-and-feed-specifications-for-comparison-shopping-engines/ This feed would need to include: Everything required to help find and generate quality listings, at minimum - Title, Description, GTIN, Image, Price,Sale Price, Shipping Cost, Quantity(?). * Fulfillment method - e.g. what third-party (such as Amazon) is shipping the items, or self. * Hardware id. For querying h-node compatibility of electronic goods. * Licensing??? Perhaps GNUFDL/CC0, or who knows. 3) Ability to detect freedom issues - * Query known unethical manufacturers: http://www.knowmore.org/ with icon * Query known good foods: http://howgood.com/ with icon * Give "Respect Your Freedom" icon on known fully free hardware. * Flag anyone detected using a monopoly like Amazon ? * Give major sites eBay/Amazon bottom priority, or non at all. In this way independent websites will once again get SEO and people wanting to support small businesses can easily do so. 4) Implement this as an open standard and make it Decentralized. This should be built easily into a retailers site in such a way YaCY and Seeks nodes understand (will require an upstream bug). It may be as easy as a sitemaps.xml-like implementation, a meta tag, or a specific location on websites. This does two fold, keeps people from having to send feeds to third parties, and allows anyone to crawl a site to find the data so that no single source holds the database. And since it is an open standard, DuckDuckGo could offer it centralized if they wish. 5) ??? - Such a task will require the cooperation of several already existing open projects. However I'm not sure the best way of getting them all on the same page. So hopefully this topic can help break the ice and get people looking into it. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Building a Google Products Alternative?
Ah and I almost forgot under section 2 and/or 3: * Payment methods. Paypal/Dwolla/Amazon/BTC etc. The first being the worst.
[Trisquel-users] Gnome-Panel fails to load on startup sometimes
Hello, I installed Trisquel for someone and they are saying that the taskbar (a.k.a. gnome3 fallback's gnome-panel) fails to load and they have to Ctrl+Alt+Delete and reboot to get it back. This sounds like a bug, but I no longer use Gnome3 myself. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this problem before or knew how to get a proper debug log without too much work? That way I can have the bug filed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Qsampler has no use
Has anyone tried contacting the developers to change their current licesning? It really makes no sense, it's already GPL and companies are already going to steal the code if they wanted to. So holding LinuxSampler back for this is really sad...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free Software replacement for iTunes
I also prefer to use CDs and buy local when possible. There's also trading sites such as SwapACD which helps you find aftermarket CDs and contribute without directly giving money to the big unethical companies like Amazon. Unfortunately they require PayPal and identification. One solution may be P.O. Box and Pre-Paids however? Regarding ITunes, Nightengale is similar in appearance. The only non-free parts might be in their optional addons - the rest is GPL and fully free.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Youtube trying xss attacks?
I've also had that happen; I presume YouTube requires some information dumped before playing videos and if it doesn't get it they freak out. You may want to try "Blender" firefox addon; it's not quite as good as firegloves but keeps some of the information hidden and YouTube still works with gnash. They also require cookies after about two videos so you'll need to enable them for session and delete them when done. Alternatively just use youtube-dl/minitube.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Another annoying problem with flash
Not sure if this would help or not, but can't you use "UnPlug" addon for FireFox and then just copy the url for the media file and run it through VLC? This has worked for me in some cases, e.g. where plugins are required to download an MP3 and all that is needed is finding the hotlink and streaming it via VLC Media Player.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gnome-Panel fails to load on startup sometimes
I have an .xsession-errors log from the affected computer, including it below: http://pastebin.com/v2Ehx6zh If others could post their "/home/user/.xsession-errors" log it may help us track down the culprit. Likely compiz, but not sure will need to do further testing...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with Abrowser Update
The problem is due to the t=trisquel being hardcoded as the default search engine in the browser during compile. You will find that the keyword.url is set here on line 74: http://devel.trisquel.info/gitweb/?p=package-helpers.git;a=blob;f=helpers/make-ubufox;h=0c4c42197c038738e8d9ef45f9e07f4c06802822 However, the part you are referring to is actually set here on line 212: http://devel.trisquel.info/gitweb/?p=package-helpers.git;a=blob;f=helpers/make-firefox;h=c81a6dee50f0058e093323c16341c0f87d91717f;hb=1c2440e15682d518a7349f76fa9ca0f9c0aae83d It seems keyword.url was depreciated upstream by FireFox; not aBrowser. The solution to remove this is fairly simple however. Go to https://duckduckgo.com/html then in the opensearch box (the one containing all the default search engines) at the bottom you will see: Add "DuckDuckGo (HTML)". Click that and make sure to "Start using right away". Once you have this search engine enabled you will find that the address bar (or keyword.url as it was previously known) is now set to the currently set OpenSearch one. You can change the address search at any time via the Search Engine dropdown; and you can add/remove search engines from the Manage Search Engines window. Hope this helps! :)

+1 on the OpenNIC reference. Definitely recommended and will solve the DNS poisoning problem. Their site: http://www.opennicproject.org/
Re: [Trisquel-users] How does Amazon track my browsed items?
Amazon utilizes several tracking methods. * Third-Parties (including devices with Amazon Cloud, music apps, ebook readers, etc.) * Session Cookies * Ever-Cookies/DOM (Most important) * Referrer Tracking * Click-Handling I don't think they are tracking browser fingerprints, or if they do it doesn't really affect the site. But it doesn't hurt to use FireGloves just the same. To stop what oralfloss was saying, you will need to have DOM AND session cookies disabled. This can be achieved with Cookie-Controller addon for aBrowser. Set it to "Force "off" state at start" and "[Off] DOM Storage". Then try browsing Amazon and you'll find their history doesn't work. Additionally they make heavy use of click-handlers. These are urls which track you when they can't get you from anything else. Luckily we have another addon for that known as "Clean Links". However by default it won't help you. You'll need to make some adjustments that I just wipped up tonight to make it work properly. 1) Under the Clean Link Addon Preferences "Remove From Links" Field where it says (?:ref|aff)\w*, add these unique identifiers (|place|pr|pf_rd_m|pf_rd_s|pf_rd_t|pf_rd_p|pf_rd_i|ld|pf_rd_r). When your done it should like like this: (?:ref|aff|place|pr|pf_rd_m|pf_rd_s|pf_rd_t|pf_rd_p|pf_rd_i|ld|pf_rd_r)\w*|utm_\w+|(?:merchant|programme|media)ID (You can copy+paste the above into the Remove From Links field if in doubt) *Note: I cannot guarentee all those extra rules won't break other sites, but as of right now it seems OK for me and works nicely on Amazon.com 2) Uncheck Event Delegation Mode 3) Check Use Redirect Watcher 4) Wipe Out Skip Domains, the guy probably got paid off by Google,FaceBook, Linkedin, et all. which are in that whitelist. 5) Highlight Cleaned Links. 6) Go to Amazon (get your sunglasses ready for all those yellow cleaned links!) Lastly, they track purchase habbits. So as soon as you login and buy they're going to have that data and give you targeted suggestions. Some of which are configurable your account settings but keep getting reset on each login. So have fun with continually setting those privacy settings. Oh and they completely ignore Mozilla's Do-Not-Track Header. ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] You might be using a google name server
The two items you put in DNS are internal OpenNic Nameservers, not the IPs of resolvers. Replace the stuff you have in "DNS Servers" field with the two IP numbers given to you on their homepage: http://www.opennicproject.org/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Copying large file to Replicant phone
I would suggest asking in #replicant on freenode irc as it may be a replicant bug. However, from simply a smart-phone user perspective I would imagine your MicroSD may be going up; assuming you were installing the data to SDCard and not to the phones memory. Have you tested transferring with a different storage device?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Add-on Screengrab licence
The original application was actually GPLv3; this guy simply did bug fixes so I don't think that is legal to make a GPL app proprietary. Someone should definitely contact him about this issue. I found his e-mail if you want to reach out to him: pag77[at]mail(dot)ru

Re: [Trisquel-users] abrowser uninstallation
I believe because this is a core package the system is hickuping over removal since there will be no default browser. (e.g. update-alternatives) To see current default (should be aBrowser): sudo update-alternatives --display x-www-browser To change this see here: https://wiki.debian.org/FAQ/Gnome You can try setting Midori as default while you reinstall aBrowser. sudo apt-get install midori Then see debian FAQ above on setting it as default. For complete removal and re-install of aBrowser let's try... sudo apt-get remove --purge abrowser Delete .mozilla/abrowser/ in your home directory, should it still be there Delete /etc/abrowser/, this is where your preferences and user-profiles are stored Delete /usr/lib/abrowser/ should it still be there Delete /usr/lib/abrowser-addons/ should it still be there Then to install it again: sudo apt-get install abrowser sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade (just to be safe and up-to-date.) And use Debian FAQ to set it as default. If that still doesn't work there are some more down and dirty methods of forcing it to bypass the error, but I'm hoping that will work for you. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Removing Trisquel in windows problem
I do not have Windows 8 and many users here likely do not have it either, however you may find this of help: You should be able to do this via the Trisquel Live CD. Go to Trisquel >> Accessories >> Terminal Install efibootmgr by typing: sudo apt-get install efibootmgr Then add to the kernel efi support: sudo modprobe efivars Then run sudo efibootmgr to check your boot entries. It will return something like this: BootCurrent: 0004 Timeout: 2 seconds BootOrder: 2001,0003,0005,0006, Boot* Lenovo Recovery System Boot0001* EFI Network 0 for IPv6 (B8-88-E3-84-F3-EF) Boot0002* EFI Network 0 for IPv4 (B8-88-E3-84-F3-EF) Boot0003* Windows Boot Manager Boot0004* EFI USB Device (SanDisk) Boot0005* Trisquel Boot2001* EFI USB Device Then delete the option you dont want. In this example, Trisquel is entry 5. the following could be called to delete entry 5 and remove it from the Boot Order. sudo efibootmgr -b 5 -B - Source: http://askubuntu.com/questions/63610/how-do-i-remove-ubuntu-in-the-bios-boot-menu
Re: [Trisquel-users] abrowser uninstallation
Interesting. Can you run: file /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser And if it exists paste the content of the file here via: gedit /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser Sounds like it got deleted or corrupted as you mentioned.
Re: [Trisquel-users] abrowser uninstallation
Interesting, that part seems right. Here is a copy of my working one: http://pastebin.com/0J5yfr6V I'd wait until someone with the inner workings of galternative (Gnome update-alternatives) replies. Or if your feeling adventurous here's some troubleshooting ideas I would try: sudo rm /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser // Remove the pesky thing sudo apt-get remove --purge abrowser // try and uninstall again sudo apt-get install abrowser // re-install (if we get this far) sudo file /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser // does file exist after re-install? sudo ln -s /usr/bin/abrowser /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser // if not, let's fix it... with a new symlink: http://kb.iu.edu/data/abbe.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replacing Web Browser
I'm not at my Trisquel box right now, but I think will do it: To add a new item to update-alternatives, use the following options. Code: update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/$LINK $PROVIDES /usr/bin/$BIN $XX So for example... (Assuming Luajit is not available in the --config list for /usr/bin/lua) If The link I'm updating is /usr/bin/lua, which provides lua-interpreter. I want to add Luajit, with a priority of 90, to the /usr/bin/lua link. Code: update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/lua lua-interpreter /usr/bin/luajit-2.0.0-beta8 90 I'm providing the correct answer so it will be available, for anyone who lands here from Google. I hate having high relevancy results, not provide the appropriate information. I'm aware this is a 3+ years old thread. BTW, update-alternatives is a Debian family specific command. I wouldn't need to be told explicitly which distro someone uses, to address something implicitly distro specific. -- Source: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/how-to-add-a-program-to-update-alternatives-631303/#post4544616 So you just compile an application and tell update-alternatives where it is and then set it from there so it deploys system wide. In your case the $PROVIDE will be x-www-browser. Hope this helps. :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Canonical wins award for Amazon integration
They deserve it. ;) Regarding Chromium it has a few settings that could be spyware related, e.g: * Autocomplete while typing in address bar (queries google for every letter). * Prefetching DNS to google * Checks all visited sites (as does firefox) against Google's bad website list for malware/phishing * Includes built-in non-free flash player * UID * RLZ identifier, an encoded string sent together with all queries to Google or once every 24 hours. * Google search access on startup for users with Google as default search * A unique ID ("clientID") for identifying the user in logs. * A timestamp of when the browser was installed. * Google-hosted error pages when a server is not present Some information taken from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRWare_Iron#Differences_from_Chrome (SWIron is also not fully free ;-) )
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the things that Trisquel can do but Windows 7 can't?
1) Trisquel Doesn't spy on you; Windows 7 does. 2) Trisquel let's you run unix applications; Windows 7 has non-free cygwin but it's just not the same. 3) Trisquel let's you recover a Windows PC from a LiveCD; Windows 7 doesn't have a LiveCD officially and BartPE imo doesn't do as good of a job. 4) Trisquel let's you easily host your own servers; Windows 7 after disabling multiple firewalls and UAC settings let's you do the same but is likely more vunerable to malicious attackers. 5) Trisquel is open-source so you can modify whatever you want; Windows 7 is a buggy black box. Yes, it's not as user-friendly as some Windows 7 features and hardware support, but with tweaking and continued bugs filed against the right packages it is my hope it one day will be. :)

[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 6.0 LTS aMule Mirror
Hello All, I've mirrored the Trisquel installer onto aMule, if anyone is interested it uses the classic KAD and ed2k network. It's an old P2P protocol but still a goodie. To use just: sudo apt-get install amule (or eMule for Windows users) Update server list/bootstrap KAD and download either of these - AMD64 ISO: ed2k://|file|trisquel_6.0_amd64.[contentdb.emule-project.net].iso|729808896|933C6DCC4F7DC53B34A3572B0C60B936|p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|h=J7N3R5J4UVDGTN6F6AFMXKYTEB7HHSNX|/ x86 iso: ed2k://|file|trisquel_6.0_i686.[contentdb.emule-project.net].iso|729808896|788E0E6944C11EDFAB22CE3414DC78D9|p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
Re: [Trisquel-users] How do I set up a mail server?
I would also be very interested in how to do this, however it seems that even if you do manage to get an e-mail server going - 90% of the internet corporations (e.g. yahoo/gmail/hotmail) will block you as a sender with Error 550 because it is coming from an unapproved sender. I have heard adjusting SPF records may solve this problem but I haven't had any luck, it seems to me they are just blocking any residential ip range and saying "you must be spam, forget you". Similar to what Michal said above. Though I would love an infographic or video tutorial on the VPN/relay solution - it sounds incredibly technical for most users...
[Trisquel-users] PengoPod selling on eBay!
It seems that the PengoPods are being liquidated on eBay, and he is closing down operation. This is very unfortunate, but it does allow us some time to get our hands on some libre-supporting hardware. http://www.ebay.com/sch/items/?_nkw=pengpod Just thought everyone might like to know before they sell out.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant ?
Assuming what's app isn't a walled garden, which it seems to be - any XMPP account would work. This program also has HUGE security and privacy vulnerabilities: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WhatsApp Some suggested FLOSS alternatives for XMPP chatting over your phone would be: Beem Project
Re: [Trisquel-users] Let's make FLOSS out of Winamp! Petition to AOL.
audacious is basically winamp and can use winamp skins, however it would be useful for this project to be opensource. The one problem with this petition is it seems to imply: 1) Keep WinAmp alive! 2) If not alive make it opensource... I would say Winamp should be opensourced with a free software license dead or alive. :D
Re: [Trisquel-users] maps program
Marble is listed along with a few others that support open street maps here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Linux Licenses are included on each wiki page.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't run virtual machine in virtualbox
Sounds like the kernel module didn't compile. Try installing virtualbox-dkms pacakge. Additionally running "sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" in a terminal should work too. If the module fails to compile you may need a -generic kernel with headers; and if all else fails you might want to try QEMU Launcher which is an alternate virtual machine application. VBox is being phased out due to the latest version being requiring non-free programs to compile it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble with Brasero
This appears to be a known bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/+bug/504645 One option is to convert to MP3 and burn: http://askubuntu.com/questions/62168/can-how-to-burn-a-flac-to-an-audio-cd I would imagine using ogg may also work.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Sentient code: An inside look at Stephen Wolfram's utterly new, insanely ambitious computational paradigm
It appears to be an ever learning artificial intelligence streaming data from MANY different sources. Since this will be proprietary and under central control could mean this is a very dangerous super computer powered by many little computers all over the world. I could see this being easily abused. Of course it actually fits in with Cisco's plan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_of_Things which is now.. http://www.cisco.com/web/about/ac79/innov/IoE.html Creepy stuff from proprietary hands just waiting to be used by future dictators. :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] TV phones home with your viewing habits, names of files you screen, even if you tell it not to
It would be a bit ridiculous, but yes you can run IPTables on the router and do netfiltering. You'd need to analyze the spyware and drop all packets from offending IPs and/or whitelist only the good IP addresses and block everything else. Obviously the latter would make surfing the internet useless. You can also specifically block urls via dd-wrt, I assume LibreWRT may be able to do the same: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Access_Restrictions
Re: [Trisquel-users] Artificial Intelligence Project
Any program can be abused. However, strong AI to me personally seems... like not a good idea. Take for example the great example in Tron. In man's attempt to create a perfect system he creates Clue! xD Regardless there are some people working on them: https://duckduckgo.com/html/?q=artificial+intelligence+opensource Some of the simplest AI would be from an: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRC_bot I've dabbled slightly with them and made them carry on conversations but nothing else overly meaningful. And nothing that could compete with the infamous Wolfram Alpha's Sentient Code.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Trisquel Without an Internet Connection
I installed using the normal mode (Live CD >> Use installer from desktop) and it works offline. It should be possible with text mode too, just skip the part that asks to configure networking and make sure it's unplugged from the internet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Trisquel Without an Internet Connection
Confirming. :( English >> Text Mode >> Language >> Location >> Detect Keyboard Layout >> Layout Type >> Detecting network hardware >> Continue >> Hostname >> Continue >> Choose Mirror >> Leave Blank for Proxy >> Error Bad Mirror >> Stuck in loop... (Should allow you to skip) Someone should open bug ticket against this, it is possible to install in GUI so it should be possible in text mode.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Has development on Trisquel 7 started?
While I appreciate Rubén and his few friends making the git commits, I wish he would allow more people write access to the git. In this way bugs and ports such as this would be completed much faster. Some of the bugs are very easy to fix.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to fix MBR problem caused by Trisquel Installation?
Quoting from a MajorGeeks post with the same error: Run Chkdsk /f /r to detect and resolve any file corruption. You must restart your PC before the disk scan begins . If you cannot start the system due to the error, use the Recovery Console and run Chkdsk /r (You should also have a Windows XP disk handy to repair any of those missing files) Hope this helps.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My conceptual problem with my computer.
I use google because of relevant results. Not an excuse, use StartPage.com instead. :D
Re: [Trisquel-users] Intel processor microcode security update for Trisquel
Hmm sad to see all the flamewar above, but back on topic. 1) I find it very strange that there has been no public announcement of which exploit or vulnerability the proposed patch fixes. Where's the changelog?? The very vague information I found on Intel's website doesn't leave me wanting to install the patch even if it were good. Patches can have unintended consequences and break other things. 2) The entire code is heavily obfuscated and no telling what is in it. Backdoors are possible. 3) The code does not "patch" the Intel chipset per-say, it runs quote "at system boot". If it were a real patch I would certainly hope it would flash the chipset, rather than installing something as root into my operating system and running at boot time. I suggest everyone write to Intel and ask: 1) What does the microcode fix exactly 2) Why not opensource it?

Nifty site to find alternatives - http://www.osalt.com/publisher And as icarolongo mentioned those are your best bet; LibreOffice Writer or Drawing, and Scribus.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free Clarendon!
Their relatives can renew the patent and patents can also be sold and renewed by the new owners as I understand it. A bigger issue than this is: http://gigaom.com/2013/11/26/troll-wins-newegg-encryption-patent-case-threatening-web-firms-that-protect-customers/ Now we're talking people actually lessening the web's security for the sake of $$. Patents are quite insidious and seem under the radar for the most part.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with Photosmart c3180
Glad to see you got it working! Though one word of caution on HPLIP. I have had it suggest non-free firmware before. Taking for example this printer: http://h-node.org/printers/view/en/1259/HPLaserJet-P1102w Make sure you don't agree to any evil EULA when using HPLIP. ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free Clarendon!
https://www.legalzoom.com/intellectual-property-rights/intellectual-property-basics/selling-patent-copyright-or http://info.legalzoom.com/renew-patent-23430.html "Plant patents and utility patents last up to 20 years from the date of application, while patents for designs last up to 14 years from the date of application. Plant and utility patents granted prior to 1995 last 17 years." Interestingly they must be renewed every 20 years, however they can be sold to others. I'd be curious how 150 years has worked for this patent as well, considering it is unlikely the guy lived this long and renewed every time, or that the new holder was so vigilant. :s
Re: [Trisquel-users] Intel processor microcode security update for Trisquel
And try to avoid getting your parts shipped in the mail either! lolz... xD NSA's TAO group is able to divert shipping deliveries to its own "secret workshops" in a method called interdiction, where agents load malware onto the electronics or install malicious hardware that can give US intelligence agencies remote access. http://www.theverge.com/2013/12/29/5253226/nsa-cia-fbi-laptop-usb-plant-spy
Re: [Trisquel-users] usb modem?
TRENDnet makes GNU/Linux friendly modems, I used to have their TFM-560X 56k modem with TU-S9 serial to usb adapter and it worked fine with wvdialconf and then gnome-ppp. I imagine their newer direct usb modems would work fine too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Novena - The free notebook
@Darksoul71: The recently endorsed gluglug x60 is about as close as their is at the moment. It boots free with coreboot, wifi, and they're actively working on VGA. The only nonfree part would be hard drive firmware, which imo is something people should be working on for a large number of drives. Anyways nice find for an "open source" laptop, but not fully free for all the components.

The best option currently would likely be OwnCloud: https://owncloud.com/blog/the-android-app-is-here For syncing just music files Rhythmbox should work. For Calendar related functions this GPL program can sync calendar information: http://dmfs.org/caldav/
Re: [Trisquel-users] securing trisquel
Regarding original post, firewall is the least of the concern here. * All public hotspots are hackable. * HTTPS doesn't help much thanks to old implementations of SSL and SSLStrip. You should: 1) Use a reputable VPN service to protect anyone from both gaining access to your computer as well as seeing your data as mentioned above. Good list: https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-services-that-take-your-anonymity-seriously-2013-edition/ * Parabola GNU/Linux community uses: LibreVPN - una red libre virtual (I have not tested it but it is free and supports free software so they may interest you as well) 2) Encrypt DNS. The last issue here is you can have a great VPN and experience DNS poisoning which will land you on a phishing site to someone else on the hotspot. You'll want to use: http://dnscrypt.org/ 3) Tor as mentioned above can help... however using it alone does not help you and in some cases if not used properly can actually make you more vulnerable than not. Re: [Trisquel-users] New user
Welcome to Trisquel Users forums. :) Trisquel is probably most similar to Linux Mint. You can even install the cinnamon desktop: http://blog.sudobits.com/2012/07/25/how-to-install-cinnamon-desktop-on-ubuntu-12-04/ Happy hopping, just keep in mind all other distros generally don't include the -libre kernel which strips out binary blobs from the GNU/Linux kernel. :D
Re: [Trisquel-users] SSH Server Enabled By Default!
WOW, this is a major issue. Not because it's SSH, but because it's the MOST INSECURE SSH setup I've ever seen. Just tested scanning my local area network running a Trisquel box. It runs on a default port with password based authentication (no KEYS!). What this means essentially is any script kiddie in the world can run a dictionary attack against all your local user accounts and gain remote access to your files. Writing the developer mailing list about this seriously messed up default right now...
Re: [Trisquel-users] SSH Server Enabled By Default!
Ha, I definitely should have noticed this before, except I don't use Trisquel as my main desktop. It's been busy though... gnu@PC:/var/log$ grep -ir ssh /var/log/* /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:45:53 PC sshd[2700]: error: Could not load host key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ecdsa_key /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:45:55 PC sshd[2700]: reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for customer-187-174-116-250.uninet-ide.com.mx [187.174.116.250] failed - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT! /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:45:55 PC sshd[2700]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=187.174.116.250 user=root /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:45:55 PC sshd[2700]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): getting password (0x0388) /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:45:55 PC sshd[2700]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): pam_get_item returned a password /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:45:55 PC sshd[2700]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): request wbcLogonUser failed: WBC_ERR_AUTH_ERROR, PAM error: PAM_USER_UNKNOWN (10), NTSTATUS: NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER, Error message was: No such user /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:45:57 PC sshd[2700]: Failed password for root from 187.174.116.250 port 44726 ssh2 /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:45:58 PC sshd[2700]: Received disconnect from 187.174.116.250: 11: Bye Bye [preauth] /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:45:58 PC sshd[2703]: error: Could not load host key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ecdsa_key /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:46:00 PC sshd[2703]: reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for customer-187-174-116-250.uninet-ide.com.mx [187.174.116.250] failed - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT! /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:46:00 PC sshd[2703]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=187.174.116.250 user=root /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:46:00 PC sshd[2703]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): getting password (0x0388) /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:46:00 PC sshd[2703]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): pam_get_item returned a password /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:46:00 PC sshd[2703]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): request wbcLogonUser failed: WBC_ERR_AUTH_ERROR, PAM error: PAM_USER_UNKNOWN (10), NTSTATUS: NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER, Error message was: No such user /var/log/auth.log:Feb 18 06:46:02 PC sshd[2703]: Failed password for root from 187.174.116.250 port 46361 ssh2
Re: [Trisquel-users] DSA, El Gamal, or RSA? SHA-256, or SHA-512? At minimum or at maximum strength?
Lately I don't trust RSA too much... https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2014/01/after-nsa-backdoors-security-experts-leave-rsa-conference-they-can-trust I think by SHA-256 as a minimum he means you should go higher. SHA-512 is pretty fair :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] Discuss Xorg Joystick Driver Bug
I'd take this upstream since it should affect more than just Trisquel. Also they will likely suggest you test against the nightly builds over at Xorg Edgers to clarify the bug exists in their latest version: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is OpenDNS safe to use?
OpenDNS is fair, however I have never seen them deny keeping logs. OpenNIC is the best alternative since a majority of their user operated servers on purposely don't log your DNS queries. http://www.opennicproject.org/ Additionally you can still use DNSCrypt which adds considerably strong security against DNS leaking. http://dnscrypt.org/ As others mentioned however, DNS is not a do all. You will need to use other methods to protect all internet traffic.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DSA, El Gamal, or RSA? SHA-256, or SHA-512? At minimum or at maximum strength?
The only concern here is... "We do not -- at least not yet -- but I strongly believe that the NSA has a significant advantage in breaking ECC. This doesn't mean it's bad, but I think we need to 1) make sure we know where our curves come from, and 2) build in a hefty security margin." "Prefer symmetric cryptography over public-key cryptography." - Bruce Schneier https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2013/11/elliptic_curve.html https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2013/09/the_nsa_is_brea.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Julian Assange: Debian Is Owned By The NSA
While the OP claim against Debian isn't entirely valid (Julian never stated that OS in the video interview), much of the information is based on truth. We do know that many systems are intentionally infected - See: To Protect & Infect [303c3], and also the trail of strange Debian bugs which leave you extra vulnerable. https://ftp.ccc.de/congress/30C3/webm/ As Grsec states wisely concerning the GNU/Linux kernel development - "The “many eyes” of open source are blind, uninterested, or selling to governments for profit (it’s not the 1992 AD scene anymore)" - The Case for Grsecruity https://grsecurity.net/the_case_for_grsecurity.pdf While these systems are open, not enough people are pentesting them for vulnerabilities.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Storing passwords
Here's at least two options. If you have to use your head you can try XKCD's famous Horse Staple Battery Method: http://xkcd.com/936/ Generator - http://correcthorsebatterystaple.net/ Alternatively there's KeepassX (Same as Keypass but doesn't need Mono), plus it's in the native repo so you don't have to worry about sketchy PPA: http://packages.trisquel.info/search?keywords=keepassx&searchon=names&suite=toutatis§ion=all Why to be weary of PPAs: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/linux-and-open-source/hand-of-thief-malware-could-be-dangerous-if-you-install-it/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser segmentation faults
Assuming aBrowser is up to FireFox 29 you can experience a large number of bugs. Interestingly due to the layout changes, memory leaks, and segfaults FireFox has reached it's presumably all time low. 86% of FireFox users are sad. See here: https://input.mozilla.org/en-US/
[Trisquel-users] FCC tryanny and Mozilla’s crazy plan to fix net neutrality
The Federal Communications Commission is proposing rules that would kill — rather than protect — Net Neutrality and allow rampant discrimination online. Under these rules, telecom giants like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon would be able to pick winners and losers online and discriminate against online content and applications. http://www.savetheinternet.com/sti-home Mozilla thinks it has found a way to ensure true network neutrality without going back and reclassifying broadband. Will its regulatory sleight of hand find support? http://gigaom.com/2014/05/05/mozillas-crazy-plan-to-fix-net-neutrality-and-turn-broadband-into-a-utility-and-why-it-could-work/ Way to go USA... :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] US Patent Office Grants 'Photography Against A White Background' To Amazon
I'm really starting to dislike Amazon.com, we should start ordering from other websites whenever possible... RMS also has some negative things to say about their business practices. :/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where do you buy printed books online?
I will admit I have purchased some items I could find nowhere else on Amazon. However, I am constantly looking for alternatives. I wouldn't say Amazon is a "would be" threat, it is "a threat" to free software and to privacy world-wide. "One day, Bezos marched into Steve Kessel's office and gave an order: "I want you to proceed as if your goal is to put everyone selling physical books out of a job," he said. Kessel's role up until then had been assuaging book publishers so that they'd feel comfortable selling their used books on Amazon." -- source: http://www.inc.com/krasny/jeff-bezos-recipe-for-disruption.html Spyware toolbar acquired: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexa_Toolbar Also Amazon has been pushing hard to force them out of the market by having people send to them (and only them), new releases, exclusive products, etc. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2415678,00.asp -- So that being said, I found a few alternatives during my search - There are a few places you can purchase books for bitcoin directly without using Amazon, and there are also local bookstores (though they are becoming more consolidated as well - e.g. Barnes&Noble). You'll want to make sure they are not giving into Amazon, ask them. You can also search Amazon and try to contact a seller (ensure they are not an Fulfilled-by-Amazon seller, since this simply means you're still buying from Amazon directly.). Explain to them that you are looking for store discounts and would like to purchase and have your product shipped directly to help their small business. I've seen several companies willing to do this, and sometimes you get a better deal as well. There are also places where you can swap and trade books. This is probably the most ethical solution currently. You can use Reddit for example: https://pay.reddit.com/r/bookexchange
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 6 missed another deadline. Is this project dead?
Since we're running behind schedule and all you need is an icon - is there anything we can do to help? It's ridiculously easy to make icons with GIMP. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Ghostery or Do not track on Abrowser
There are multiple reasons not to use ghostery, besides the fact it is non-free, they too began tracking users. I blogged about this a few years back... http://proxy.opennicproject.org/proxy.php?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.g4jc.geek%2Fwordpress%2F2010%2F09%2Fthe-epic-failure-of-ghostery%2F Here's some extensions which make your computer much more powerful than just using Ghostery by far - * NoScript * RequestPolicy * Adblock Edge * Cookie Controller * HTTPSEverywhere Cookie Controller is basically cookie buttons for your browser, they allow you to do things like disable DOM (evercookies) and block all cookies so you can allow session cookies on per-site basis. Other addons to consider, even though they break a few sites: * LibreJS * FireGloves or MaskingAgent * CleanLinks or gprivacy * RefControl * HTTPSFinder * OverbiteFF (not for the normal WWW, but gopher protocol doesn't have cookies and is spam free) :D And lastly don't forget the obvious. Networks track you too. * OpenNIC DNS - (where my blog domain is now) gives a lot more freedom. Try it out! http://useopennic.org/ * TOR or FoxyProxy for casual browsing, you can't actually post anything since it gets you blocked on most sites. :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] Internet Censorship in Authoritarian Countries
He could try to use this to communicate - https://freenetproject.org/whatis.html The best part is he could pass around the binary and directly connect in a fairly safe manor to friends.
[Trisquel-users] Making Desurium Libre
We were having a discussion about FLOSS games in IRC and several topics were raised. Basically no one has a complete PlayDeb repo of just libre games and there's no fully Steam clones since Desurium offers non-free packages. See: http://www.desura.com/groups/desurium So rather than re-invent the real I got the idea to request the folks over at Desurium either provide a sever dedicated to fully-free gaming or at least provide the option to filter out the other games and provide libre games by default. You can follow the ticket on their github here: https://github.com/lodle/Desurium/issues/495 Feel free to comment. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Ghostery or Do not track on Abrowser
Right, when I found the extension on google code it was called GPrivacy - https://code.google.com/p/gprivacy/ I noticed that about FireGloves too, very sad. It's the only protection against Panopticlick-style finger printing attacks. Anyways the addon still works (for now).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Difficulty compiling from source
There's actually a very easy way to do this without compiling stuff... Cutting edge versions of FireFox and Thunderbird, just install PPA: https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/thunderbird-next https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/firefox-next Or stable releases: http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/firefox You'll need to download each .deb seperately, but there's only like 3 required.
Re: [Trisquel-users] VirtualBox
Indeed, this is a serious issue. Virtualbox has also been removed from Parabola for the same reasons. For anyone wanting to get this fixed I've opened up a bug directly with VirtualBox's Trac here -https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/12011 Until then we may have to use virt-manager and QEMU-KVM. :/
Re: [Trisquel-users] just told my facebook friends that I'm leaving
Nice! But did anyone actually go to chat with you via other ways? Most of my so-called Facebook friends simply replied with "I know and I don't care, there's nothing I'm hiding anyway". Regarding Tormail, it's offline due to the FH takedown. :( Best to run your own mail server, and much safer I would imagine.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fundraising campaign: Privacy Friendly Mail (TLS/OpenGPG/etc) Software
I have not used it, but I think BitMessage is supposed to encrypt everything including the sender and receiver, which would effectively do just that - https://bitmessage.org/wiki/Main_Page
Re: [Trisquel-users] DNS Leak
This site has some good information on how to force and randomize the DNS servers you want - http://www.ab9il.net/crypto/ I personally prefer OpenNIC servers: http://wiki.opennicproject.org/ClosestT2Servers
Re: [Trisquel-users] Debtorrent
You may also want to have a look at http://www.camrdale.org/apt-p2p/ I noticed this line: "It is originally based on the khashmir implementation of the kademlia DHT." Not tested it, but looks neat.
