[Trisquel-users] GIMP Forums - Suggestions?
Hey Community, I'm interested in becoming active on a GIMP forum, and I found the "Clubs" list on Gimp.org (http://www.gimp.org/links/). Any suggestions for a good GIMP forum, on or off that list?
Re: [Trisquel-users] GIMP Forums - Suggestions?
Thanks. It looks like Gimptalk.com is one of the biggest, and gimpforums.com seems the most active.

OK. Great. I will give it a shot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Volume Filesystem Root Warning, lack of space and huge log files
Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Volume Filesystem Root Warning, lack of space and huge log files
I deleted the logs, and everything is running fine. Thanks. I also ran a software update. Will that take care of old kernels?
[Trisquel-users] Volume Filesystem Root Warning, lack of space and huge log files
I received a warning today: The volume Filesystem root has only 39.1 MB disk space remaining. You can free up disk space by removing unused programs or files, or by moving files to another disk or partition. I have 20GB allocated for my system files partition. I used the Disk Usage Analyzer an noticed most of the space was taken up by log files, located in /var/log. Kern.log and syslog are pretty big, each at 6.4 GB. Is this normal? I've used a much smaller system directory before and didn't have this problem, and I would rather not have to remove any applications. Is there a setting that I may have missed? Or is there a way to reduce the size of these logs or another way to free up space?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Imac fan control
Hi Iman, I've been with the community for over a year now, and just a few months ago I finally fully transitioned to Trisquel for daily work - also switching from Mac. Learning the ins and outs of Free software (plus the command line here and there) has been a gradual and rewarding process. Undoubtedly, it has reinvigorated a fading passion for computers. I also must say, the members have been extremely supportive...and I'm glad to see another Apple user giving it a shot. Welcome to the forum!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless N USB Adapter (TPE-N150USB)
The N USB just went out on me, unfortunetly just before I got to the new firmware. It had the same symptoms as the last few times. Fortunately, I have the G and it is working fine. It has really great reception too. Should I use the new firmware with the G, or should I stick with the older firmware? Or is that firmware only for the N?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Home Directory in Dedicated Partition, Pros Cons?
Thank you, this was very helpful.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Home Directory in Dedicated Partition, Pros Cons?
I didn't remember seeing a seperate partition when installing. I used rEFIT when installing dualboot, following these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation#Dual-Boot:_Mac_OSX_and_Ubuntu Could mine being on the same partition be because I installed a Dualboot with Mac OSX? If a seperate partition is the default, then it will make it much easier if I reformat with Trisquel as my primary install.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless N USB Adapter (TPE-N150USB)
Chris, thanks. The N is still running fine. Do you recommend that I update the firmware as a precaution? Or should I only do so if symptoms arrise? Finally, how do I install the firmware? Do I just drop the files into the /lib/firmware directory?
[Trisquel-users] Home Directory in Dedicated Partition, Pros Cons?
I'm using Trisquel about ninety percent of the time now! I'm currently using a dual boot, and I have a seperate partition for my files, i.e., to share between the OSs. Since I've been using Trisquel much more, I was considering moving my files to the Trisquel partition. But then I became curious about linking my Home folder to a seperate partion and discovered and article on how to do so.* I understand that this could be beneificial because the settings, files, and desktop will remain if I upgrade or re-install; but is there any other things I should be aware of or concerned about, pros and/or cons? Anybody else doing this on their systems? Ultimately, I'd like a system that is easy to back-up and restore or re-install, and if this would complicate it - then I would avoid it. *https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless N USB Adapter (TPE-N150USB)
Sounds great! Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless N USB Adapter (TPE-N150USB)
I have since received the two adapters, the Wireless N and G. They were promptly shipped, and - shortly after Thanksgiving - I was back to working in Trisquel. I ordered the N again to compare and contrast, and to see how it would react if I did things a bit different. Plus, if it does happen to stop responding, I would like to try some of the trouble shooting tips offered by Think Penguin. After the prior adapter went out, I attempted some physical alterations that ended up damaging the device, so I couldn't run the suggested tests. I'm also going to avoid having the device plugged in if I have to bounce back to OS X; perhaps something in that OS was throwing it for a loop. Notably, I will be switching between the G and N. Off the bat, the G has great reception – and if the N went out of commission, I would not have any objections, regardless of its larger size. I'm also interested in giving the Wireless N Dual-Band a try and am considering it for later. There are a lot of Macbooks out there, which means that there are a lot of people who could be using Trisquel. I hope these tests will make it easier for them to transition. With that said, becoming a full time Trisquel and Free Software user has been a long process, but it is certainly liberating and exciting. As I fine tune the map, I hope to provide a more detailed report on my transition...down the road, of course. I'm still learning. Chris, no return is needed. It's an investment. Thanks for the products, detailed support and prompt delivery. On a side note, I'd love to see Switch Kits, i.e., everything needed to make “popular” used computers/laptops freer.I just wanted to post an update. Ihave since recieved the
[Trisquel-users] Wireless N USB Adapter (TPE-N150USB)
My second Think Pinguin adapter Wireless N USB Adapter (TPE-N150USB) stopped working with my Macbook Air 2011. It happened in a very similar fashion to my last USB adapter; which was the same model. I hadn't used the adapter because I was still working in OS X. But after a year of gradually transitioning to Free software within Mac OS X, last week, I finally made the full time leap to Trisquel 7! Unfortunately, the wireless adapter became spotty a few days ago and finally, yesterday, wouldn't connect at all. I then found that if I pressed on the back side and lifted the adapter, it would temporarily connect—but it was still very spotty. Chris, Think Pinguin, had mentioned that only a handful of people have this problem, and that it tends to be there system that is the culprit (1). This could mean that Macbook Air 2011s aren't Think Pinguin friendly for the smaller N USB adapter. Has anyone else experienced this problem with the wireless adapter and a Macbook Air or Apple computer? I have since ordered another Wireless N adapter in addition to a G model. I don't want to give up on the smaller adapter yet, and I'd like to see how the G model compares. (1) http://trisquel.info/en/forum/help-my-think-pinguin-wireless-usb-adapter#comment-51124

Re: [Trisquel-users] Munich gives up on GNU/Linux and free/open source software
I believe it may be possible to override the convenience factor by providing informative and free (actually as in gratis) classes with FREE software. This could be foundation courses such as image manipulation, video/audio editing, basic web development, and—importantly—computer programming (especially video games for the kids). Perhaps this may be best via existing institutions, e.g., public libraries. These courses could be sprinkled with why FREE software is important; for example, perhaps a facilitator may share the reasons why she teaches the course. The program could focus on the very young—elementary school level—but may also be open to the general public. Notably, it could even target senior citizens...basic word processing our even HTML. We need these voices. I think the power is with the users; the people that are doing things. If the young to start very young...especially those who wouldn't normally have access to computer programming...we may be in store for some new/unexpected work and much needed change in the industry and art. These are some initial thoughts; I'm still reflecting.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Seven!!!
OK. Cool, thanks! So, because I'm still a rookie at this, I have another question; should I go with the 944M triskel_7.0-20140629_i686.iso version? I'm assuming that the i signifies Intel. Also, I understand the Apple shame. I remember being mocked when having an Apple in public. Boy have times changed. Now I shame Apple with two strips of Duct tape—it marks an X over their glowing icon. Also, both my DuctBooks are used. While they may not be fully FREE, they serve as great transitional computers. Plus, a used computer is way better for the environment. Come to think of it, there are so many Apples out their...perhaps there should be a movement for modifying the hardware, e.g., building FREE from the recycled.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Seven!!!
I'm glad I asked! Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Seven!!!
OK, thanks! So I have another question too—I'm still a bit new with this. Some time ago, I managed to install Trisquel 6.0 on my Macbook Air, dual boot, via reEFit. Similarly, I'd like to install a pre-release of Trisquel on an older MacBook Pro, i.e., MacBookPro5,1 with a 2.66 Intel Core 2 Duo. Which version of the pre-release should I install?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Seven!!!
I'm on Trisquel 6, and I just want to make sure I understand this correctly. So, if I install a pre-release, then when 7.0 is officially released I can upgrade from within my pre-release install? That is, instead of a installing from another new ISO? Is that correct? And also, is the following link to pre-releases? http://devel.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Seven!!!
Does anyone, perhaps from the event, have some news?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Seven!!!
I wasn't aware of these developments. Thanks for the links!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Seven!!!
I'm looking forward to hearing the news! I've been anticipating 7 for some time, especially with news of a newer version of Pitivi in the mix.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to found a Free Software company?
I've been thinking about this too. Could more grass root efforts like this be the key? Most major propriety companies have a strong hold on small business solutions, e.g., just about every small office has the MS suite. But perhaps providing continual support, e.g., transition and then conditioning, could make a difference. These small businesses could then redirect prior software expenses to your income and, perhaps, the community or other employees. Imagine a service that promotes Free Software and offers comparable support to the behemoths. We need a lot of these sort of regional gurus, and I think the biggest advantage is that they could easily meet clients face-to-face, over coffee...as opposed to a FAQ or convoluted contact links.

Hi Joavig, Per Andrew in another thread, You should be able to press ALT+Super+right-click and then move one of them. Then do ALT+Super+right-click and delete the duplicate one. https://trisquel.info/en/forum/i-messed-my-task-bar This may help.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Mozilla to adopt support for digital restrictions: help with the protest!
I just recently received this news from FSF also. This reminds me of when Adobe released its Creative suite, free of charge, to students at my University. Shortly after, they started pushing their cloud software. In hindsight, I question their intentions and the effects. I know that I am still struggling with a transition from their software, and I wonder about others. Chris, thanks for posting the article here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Work On Trisquel 7 Has Begun
This is great news. I look forward to giving it a try.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help With My Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter
axgb, I didn't bash it, so I think it may have just been a bad apple. The new adapter was less expensive, shipped fast, and has been working very well. alguien, I normally wear a hazmat suit when descending in the silicon maze, but this is a USB (plug-and-play) adapter.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Applications (Pitivi 0.92 and cairo)
So after Pitivi released version 0.93, with All-in-one distro-agnostic bundles, I decided to give it another go. http://www.pitivi.org/?go=download I unpacked a 64 bit version into a folder on my desktop. The unpacked documents/programs didn't include a Pitivi icon (still attached). After first clicking the pitivi-0.93-beta-x86_64.md5sum nothing happened. But the second time, the application started up! I tried opening some XDCAM video in the program. These are wrapped in .mov files, compressed as APPLE XDCAM HD 1080p24 files. This crashed the program. I then tried opening the .mov file outside of Pitivi, and I couldn't get it to open. This included trying to import into KDENLIVE. The good news, Pitivi is a step closer. The challenge, I need to experiment with different formats and a new workflow, i.e., to find Trisquel friendly video formats. APPLE XDCAM works well for Final Cut Pro, but it seems quite difficult in Trisquel. Any suggestions on high quality, edit friendly video formats for Trisquel?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help With My Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter
I received the new adapter and it connected to the Internet immediately.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help With My Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter
lammi87, thank you. I ran the command and this was the output: 3.2.0-57-generic Also, thanks for the link. I believe it may be best to wait for the other USB adapter to arrive before making any changes to the OS/kernel. This may help diagnose whether or not it is the hardware. I will follow-up when it arrives. Thanks again!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Help With My Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter
Hi Chris, I'm running on the 6.0.1 version. Is that the latest kernel? I'm new to some of the terminology, by the way. I'm gradually learning. I also recently ordered another adapter for testing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help With My Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter
OK. Here are the results. mYself ~$ md5sum /lib/firmware/htc_*.fw 9158b6bde3e458cb027028eaac776bad /lib/firmware/htc_7010.fw d0e6c63ca68b89f8c874bbff3ebde09a /lib/firmware/htc_9271.fw ~$ uname -r 3.2.0-57-generic ~$ lsusb -d 0cf3:9271 (no output) sebelius ls /lib/firmware | grep htc_.* htc_7010.fw htc_9271.fw Legimet $ ls /lib/firmware/htc_.* cannot access /lib/firmware/htc_.*: No such file or directory It looks like I may have the firmware. However, because there was no output for lsusb -d 0cf3:9271—does this narrow it down to an issue with the USB hardware?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help With My Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter
Also, I haven't gotten over my spelling mishap.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help With My Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter
Yes, I tried both USB ports and had the same results. I just did it again for good measure. I even tried blowing in it, like I used to with my old Colecovision game cartridges. Still, no luck. The wi-fi was going in and out several months ago. Perhaps, during inactivity, what ever was going wrong in the device finally fulfilled its debauchery.
[Trisquel-users] Help With My Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter
I purchased a Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter (TPE-N150USB) sometime ago. I then re-installed Trisquel with an updated iso image (6.0.1). This got me up and running online. However, after several months, I restarted Trisquel and it was no longer able to connect to a wireless network. I'm not sure if this is because of a software setting or if my USB adapter kicked the can. Is there a way to test and see if the adapter is out of commission? Or might there be a quick software fix? Also note, I stepped away from Trisquel for several months because I found it easier to transition to FOSS with my applications first. I have since switched my primary applications: word processor (Nisus Writer and MS Word to LibreOffice) and spreadsheet (Excel to LibreOffice). I'm also in the midst of switching from Dreamweaver to Bluefish and have my eyes on GIMP, Inkscape, and Scribus. Little by little. I intend to write a more detailed report down the road.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help With My Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter
Oh man, embarrassing, I just realized that I fell victim to OSX auto correct...followed by a copy and past. Could a moderator please correct the name of the adapter so that it reflects the swimming bird and not the prickly plant?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help With My Think Pinguin Wireless USB Adapter
OK. I will get to this later today, if not early tomorrow. Thank you!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video editing
I've been a user of Final Cut Pro (FCP) since version 1; it is actually why I had original switched to that evil empire, before they were so notorious. But after dumping thousands into their software, version X made me sick. It wasn't so much because I hated it interface, but it is because I realized how little control we have. I would love to see a simple, open source platform with the same stability I found in the original FCP. I'm currently prepping a gradual transition to open sourse, and I have been looking into a few options. First, my hopes are four basic features: (1) To be able to make Simple Cuts and Edits (2) To handle multi-track audio and video (3) To handling and exporting multiple formats and, finally, (4) stability I have my eyes on Openshot, Kdenlive, Pitivi, and Blender. The newer version of Pitivi looks very promissing, but I had trouble getting it up and going on Trisquel. I also had some trouble with Openshot. I was able to get the latest version of Kdenlive working. I was quite impressed with the ability to manage proxy files and with the simple interface. Unfortunately, it looks like development has slowed to a crawl—and some fear it may have been abandoned by the lead. My first impression of Blender is cumbersome. There are so many options and windows. However, once you dig in, from what I understand, it is one of the more flexible and stable. I'm hoping to work with each of these overtime. Perhaps if we can contribute to each they may improve the access, stability and/or simplify the interfaces.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Applications (Pitivi 0.92 and cairo)
I decided to throw in the towel on this for now. I read another thread about how Pitivi 0.92 is an Alpha version. This thread also mentioned that Pitivi 1 will eventually be packaged for the repositories. I'm more in the user arena, and it seems the Alpha version is out of my reach. It also appears best if I wait for the more stable version 1 to get involved. I should be able to get by with the prior version of Pitivi, Kdenlive and - possibly - Blender for now. I will be comparing and contrasting these to my old (un-free) editing software. Regardless, thank you all for the feedback! I'm nearly set with my core applications, and it's time to began the gradual transition!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Applications (Pitivi 0.92 and cairo)
Just a quick update: I'm going to create a second installation of Trisquel to play with—this way I won't effect my already working installation. I will be working on this little-by-little overtime.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Applications (Pitivi 0.92 and cairo)
OK. Thanks. I check into this. I wish Piviti had a newer version in the launchpad.net repositories. It appears that they make the jump from 0.15 all the way to the 0.92 compilable installation. Hopefully there is a small tweak that will get it up and running. I know I have a lot to learn.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I messed up my task bar...
Yes, same thing happened to me. I then discovered that on a Macs track pad, you need to use two fingers to right click.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Applications (Pitivi 0.9 and cairo)
Magic Banana, that solved the panel issue. I also discovered that to right click on a Macbook Air, you need to use two fingers on the touch pad. Is the second suggestion you mentioned for the panel issue? Or is that regarding Pitivi? Is that because I may have thrown off some other applications by trying to upgrade the system for Pitivi 0.92? If that is the case, and I do run into problems, I can always re-install Trisquel too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Applications (Pitivi 0.9 and cairo)
Also, would it be possible for a moderator to change the title of this thread to Pitivi 0.92 instead of Pitivi 0.9?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Applications (Pitivi 0.9 and cairo)
Lembas and Magic Banana, thanks for the feedback. It may be some time before I can get to this, but I will follow-up as soon as I do.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Applications (Pitivi 0.9 and cairo)
Magic Banana, I started that package route and got three packages deep before hitting a block. I then discovered an Ubuntu repository and a wiki about Pitivi's dependencies (http://wiki.pitivi.org/wiki/Dependencies). I first tried adding the repository and upating my system: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gstreamer-developers/ppa sudo apt-get update Next, I restarted and noticed a strange behavior, i.e., the application windows started showing on the left side of the Trisquel start menu. I attached at the bottom of this post. Here is a direct link to it: https://trisquel.info/files/menu-issue.png I then went to install the other dependencies, following the instructions on the Pitivi wiki page for Ubuntu. # Basic build tools: sudo apt-get install git build-essential automake libtool itstool gtk-doc-tools gnome-common gnome-doc-utils yasm flex bison # Stuff related to introspection, GTK, canvases, and various other dependencies: sudo apt-get install libgirepository1.0-dev python-dev python-gi-dev \ python-cairo-dev libcairo2-dev libgdk-pixbuf2.0-dev libpulse-dev libgtk-3-dev \ libclutter-1.0-dev libclutter-gtk-1.0-dev # GStreamer 1.x, if you're lucky and your distro packages are recent enough: sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-alsa gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio \ libgstreamer-plugins-bad1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-dev libgstreamer1.0-dev libgstreamer1.0-0 # GStreamer plugins' full set of dependencies to build all the codecs: sudo apt-get build-dep gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly Next, I followed Pitivi's instructions for installation, i.e., to cd into the pitivi file, configure, make, and install (http://pitivi.org/?go=download). I was finally able to complete configuration and installation through the terminal. However, Pitivi will not launch. When I click on the application to launch, it tries for about 20 seconds and then crashes. Any ideas on how to get this application to open? Also, is there a setting to restore my Trisquel menu, so that the open applications show on the right side of the Trisquel start menu? Any help or ideas is appreciated. Also, Andresm, I'm determined to get up and running on Trisquel. But perhaps, down the road, I may try a seperate install of Parabola. I first need to get more comfortable with the terminal.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Applications (Pitivi 0.9 and cairo)
I apologize, I meant Pitivi 0.92. I was interested in working with their latest edition and, perhaps, joining in for feedback. Any help installing would be appreciated. Also, I have been using Anki 2 for sometime in another OS. There are some pretty big differences between 1 2—so I opted to install version 2 in Trisquel. Version 2 works great, by the way. It is a huge step in my transition.
