Re: [Trisquel-users] Advertising Trisquel FLOSS
I have often seen Trisquel GNU/Linux's Logo reads as: trisquelgnulinux This does not reflect the view of GNU Project. The logo should be renamed like: Trisquel GNU/Linux OR Trisquel GNU+Linux Also please add these Logos (The old website hosted them. Don't know why ruben removed them.) with respective hyperlinks, on Trisquel's Front page; This is a great way to spread the free software philosophy to new members and can be used in Advertising campaigns. All the Best, vinzv!!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Canonical's updated licensing terms for Ubuntu GNU/Linux
Great note, jxself. Added to that, patent clause in Canonical's current policy needs to be bit more polished. Canonical should adopt defensive use of patents; not to initiate litigation suits against (re)distributors for minor/trivial violations. Further, Canonical's trademark policy should be transparent; The (re)distributors should be well guided as to where and when trademarks needs to be removed to comply with the trademark policy. It is necessary that free software developers, users and FSF, in particular should keep the doors of communication open with Canonical; This is the only way to win back our rights for free software.
[Trisquel-users] Canonical's updated licensing terms for Ubuntu GNU/Linux
FSF have published a statement on Canonical's updated licensing terms for Ubuntu GNU/Linux. The highlight is a “trump clause” which effectively reverses the default situation of the Canonical's policy, and mandates that when Canonical, Ltd.'s policy contradicts something that the GPL requires, or prohibits something that the GPL allows, the rights granted in the GPL shall prevail. A direct consequence, for example, is that redistributors are relieved of the overhead to recompile the source code covered under GPL to create their own binaries; GPL simply requires that you pass along source code that successfully can be recompiled into binaries. While this change handles the situation for works covered by the GPL, it does not help works covered by lax permissive licenses (such as the X11 license) that do allow such additional restrictions. This is yet another success story which explains how choosing copyleft licenses like the GPL prevents others from imposing (arbitrary) restrictions on users. Re: [Trisquel-users] unetbootin fork
Rightly said, Muhammed. freedom is an ideal word that can fit to the context, as it alleviates issues related to price. Also mind that FSF's hardware certification program is named keeping user freedom above anything else.

[UPDATE] Today, got reply from Ludovic Courtes. This is the most relevant part from his mail; (Unedited.) AIUI, Unetbootin creates USB images from ISO images. Currently we provide USB images of GuixSD, so presumably nothing is needed on that front. Creating ISO images of GuixSD should be doable but requires hacking in Guix itself. We haven’t done it yet, mostly because it seems that most machines can boot on USB nowadays, but less and less have a CD-ROM drive. Please use guix-de...@gnu.org for future correspondence. So, perhaps someone needs to check the source code and supply appropriate USB image, for GuixSD to work properly.

Re: [Trisquel-users] unetbootin fork
Wait, I am afraid that may not be an ideal choice. We already have a Libreboot project for free (libre) BIOS/UEFI replacement. This may confuse less experianced users. How about [1] GNUnetbootin ? [2] GNUbootin ? This will remove the confusion with the live project as well as spread the message that it suggests exclusively free GNU/Linux distributions. Sidenote: Inspired by Philosophy of the GNU Project and GNU IceCat
Re: [Trisquel-users] unetbootin fork
but then again people may think its part of the gnu project.. You can donate your work to the GNU Project; that will encourage people to try out various free GNU/Linux distributions before making a decision. Free software community always appreciate such efforts and its a nice way to raise funds for further development of the program. All the best! i will call it for now FreeNetBootin until a better name is thought up. Good choice. also i added libertybsd LibertyBSD is yet to get a nod from Free Software Foundation. So if you are planning to distribute FreeNetBootin to Trisquel GNU/Linux repository or GNU project, you should first get it (LibertyBSD) approved by FSF.

[Trisquel-users] Websites that suggest exclusively free addons/plugins.
While filing a bug report[1] in Trisquel's bug tracking system, I came across these two websites which suggest exclusively free addons/plugins; 1. http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/GNU_IceCat 2. https://f-droid.org/ Do you know any other websites which can fit into the context? Also, is it possible to include GNU IceCat in Replicant's[2] repository, just as Mozilla Firefox is customized for latest Android phones? Re: [Trisquel-users] Websites that suggest exclusively free addons/plugins.
@jxself, Thank you for the update. Personally I love GNU IceCat due to emphasis on privacy and, of course, it respects my freedom. Porting this gem to F-Droid, the fully free repository for Android distributions is a recognition in itself to the maintainer and the whole community behind it. @pizzaiolo, Great suggestion! @marioxcc, What I meant was websites that suggest exclusively free 'addons/pluggins' for IceCat/Abrowser. Anyway, I can crunch on some of those games later; Thank you.

Hi Leny, Please mark the bug report I filed here https://trisquel.info/en/issues/14344 as a duplicate of your bug report.
[Trisquel-users] Should we abandon 'fortunes-ubuntu-server' package from Trisquel repos?
Synaptic Package Manager lists a package named 'fortunes-ubuntu-server'. According to the package description available:- This package provides a set of tips on using Ubuntu server, in a fortune database format. Since we don't embrace Canonical's 'open source' culture, it makes perfect sense not to use their server software too, unless its liberated from non-free blobs. I would like to know if this package can be removed/abondoned from Trisquel repos.

[Trisquel-users] 'Bits of Freedom' for the Trisquel GNU/Linux website.
The old Trisquel website, had a '100% FREE SOFTWARE' logo along with an 'FSF Join now!' Banner. It seems like while renovating the website, these 'Bits of Freedom' went missing. These free software goodies have often served as a medium for a novice user to get introduced to the world of free software and know his/her digital rights. Actually it was a complaint with CD Drive. It is rectified. @tomlukeywood: Sorry for the wrong button, dude.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7.0 is unable to detect CD, DVD etc.
For me, Trisquel 6.0 detected any CD/DVD in the drive, whether or not it is blank. But with Trisquel 7.0, any CD/DVD inserted in the drive goes undetected. This is the same case even if I go via Main Menu - Places, where a USB flash drive is detectable. Mine is a fresh install of Trisquel 7.0, and this is an urgent requirement.

We should write to Ruben to include this package in the base installation package list. Thanks a lot, MB...!!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me to add a HP Deskjet D1560 printer in Trisquel 7.0
I just used CUPS; Hi Heather, Thank you for the reply. But unfortunately, being a new user, I could not understand your solution. Can you explain a bit more how you did the trick? (like, the commands used/package installed via synaptic/add or remove software etc.)
[Trisquel-users] Help me to add a HP Deskjet D1560 printer in Trisquel 7.0
I have a HP Deskjet D1560 printer which worked fine with Trisquel 6.0. When I upgraded to Trisquel 7.0 from 6.0, then also it worked perfectly. Then I made a fresh install of Trisquel 7.0. But this time, although I can detect my printer via system settings - Printers - Add New Printer when I select either 'Deskjet-D1500-series' or 'Deskjet-D1500-series-2' I get an error saying 'Failed to add new printer'. Am I missing any packages from Trisquel 6.0 which enabled me to add my printer? I have attached screenshots alongside for better understanding.
[Trisquel-users] /etc has a 'firefox' folder with apturl.js
What worries me really is not the 'Firefox' folder name but its contents, ie /etc/firefox/pref/apturl.js, especially the javascript file named apturl.js There are two folders for IceCat and Abrowser both having files named syspref.js, which also resides in /etc path. I am *NOT* against including javascript in programs, if they are free: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/javascript-trap.html *BUT* from a privacy point of view (as browsers can work on JS, and can be manipulated via an attacker etc.) I feel its my right to understand what is the purpose served by apturl.js(especially do it directs to an embedded URL, can be accessed by an external process etc.) Thank you in advance for input
[Trisquel-users] GNOME has documentations *without* a license.

(PS:- Documents are generally licensed under GNU GPL, GNU FDL or Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0/3.0 etc.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Online Accounts' Legal notice violates GFSD
lembas, There are some issues which the legal notice does not address; 1. It does not explicitly say whether the authentications cookies are encrypted or not. Often crackers can access an unencrypted cookie and can steal the user credential. 2. Authentication cookie is a functional data. Unless a user knows what goes into it, we cannot explicitly understand what it does. The source code/cookie format needs to be published in that case.(Just like Libre-Javascript.) 3. It does not explicitly mentions who all can acces the cookies, only the concerned service provider or someone else. It also does not tells what information the cookie conveys to the authentication service. 4. It does not mentions whether these authentication cookies are accessible to the user. 5. One more addition:- Canonical can change the legal notice at any time; This makes clear they can change their policy regarding how they use the user credentials, or what data the authentication cookies can deliver to the authentication site (eg. Facebook). These are enogh defense to consider 'Online Accounts' with suspicion.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Online Accounts' Legal notice violates GFSD
Hi lembas, I think the trademarked logos are Non-functional Data and the practical requirements are reasonable. What I believe is a Big Problem is mentioning Ubuntu and Canonical as their trademark policy forbids this. I've reported this at https://trisquel.info/en/issues/5052#comment-61395 I agree with you - trademarked logos are non-functional data and can be excluded. But the legal notice also mentions the trademark of Canonical. According to your suggestion, trademark of canonical cannot be used without their prior permission and Trisquel cannot explicitly use it in that case. Thank you for correcting me. I will always welcome an 'online accounts' software, provided it respects all my four freedoms. I believe the community will take my concerns in the right spirit.
[Trisquel-users] 'Online Accounts' Legal notice violates GFSD
A bug regarding this issue has already been filed. You can sneak over to the bug report at the URL; https://trisquel.info/en/issues/13171 Brief Description of Online Accounts Legal notice for quick Review***:- 1. Mentions about collecting and storing user's credentials and enabling authentication cookies, which may impose a back door/act as a spyware. 2. Any trademarks, logos and service marks displayed on Online Accounts are the property of their owners, meaning verbatim copying and redistribution of the trademark/logo can be legally challenged by third party trademark holders in respective states/countries of use. Please share your valuable suggestions in this regard.

Issue Resolved. IceCat uses system Proxy settings to access internet. I set Abrowser to the same value. Thanks a lot, akfoss and Sachin.
[Trisquel-users] Abrowser shows me webpages of other countries instead of its native version.
For example, when I enter www.yahoo.com or www.google.com, instead of the their respective Indian Version I am gettings their German/UK/US versions. This is really frustrating. 1. Is this the default behaviour of Abrowser? (NOTE: I have NOT seen this *anti*-feature in IceCat.) 2. Do Abrowser has any settings so that it automatically redirect to Indian versions of websites, if they are available?

[Trisquel-users] Have you been a victim of Kernal Panic?
I am having a freshly installed T7 system. Today morning, while it got accedently disconnected from power cord. When I booted the system again I am getting the following message:- BusyBox v1.21.1(Ubuntu 1:1.21.0-1ubuntu1) built-in-shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built in commands (initramfs)_ when I typed exit and enter key, I got a kernal panic. Here is a similar issue posted recently: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/four-kernel-panics-two-days-3130-40-lowlatency I had an installation DVD so I re-installed the system :) What might have gone wrong? Is there any standard way to avoid kernal panic?

Should I select gcc(GNU C compiler) package(shown in figure)? A bit more explanation is appreciable.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does Trisquel come with GCC pre-installed?
By the by, where can I find the binary executable of GCC for Trisquel? I read somewhere that GCC maintainers only hosts the source code, whereby individual free software distributions bakes their packages from its flavour. Does it also depends on processor architecture? (Mine's is i386.) Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
Well, a lot of work is left for us as well as the developer/s (literally!!) Happy to know that Ruben seems reviewing the workflow and plans to rework on Trisquel webpages. True, once the developers meeting is up, lets hope the project gets real boost. My views on Trisquel goes like this:- 1. We should understand that maintaining a project itself is a hard nut and Ruben is giving his best efforts. We should not rush to conclusions. The project is still at a nascent stage in terms of organisational structure; we should give it time to mature, naturally so that we get a community similar to Debian. 2. FSF provides Trisquel GNU/Linux OS as a gift to Associate members in a USB bootable card. It shows the belief that Trisquel has achieved from FSF over years, not only as a Free Distro but as a competent Replacement to any modern proprietary OS. 3. GNU website shows Trisquel Desktop snapshot to describe how well a Free Software can be, as a counterpart to any non-free Software in terms of ease of use and reliability; One more golden feather to Trisquel's effort. 4. Out of four Linux distros I have tried (Ubuntu, Debian, Gnewsense and Trisquel), Only Trisquel have the stability second to Debian, advanced software second to Ubuntu and ease of use/EUI second to Gnewsense.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
I am yet to find a single orphanaged package in Belenos. Such a Wonderful job!! Kudos to the team, especially ruben!!
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
I have recently installed Trisquel 6.0.1 on a Desktop. After Installation I upgraded the whole system from Terminal via $apt-get update and $apt-get dist-upgrade commands. After this I gave $apt-get autoremove, a command usually used to remove packages which have no dependancy with any other installed package. To my surprise, a list consisting of somewhat between 10-25 packages seemed to be having no dependancies with any of installed packages(or orphanaged packages). Is it safe to remove these orphanaged packages? How do the community looks at this issue? I have earlier used Debian, but never faced the issue with orphanaged packages with it. It seems that package dependencies were not fully resolved while developing packages from Ubuntu main repos.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel seems to having a lot of orphanaged packages, sepecially after a fresh install.
I would suggest there be a mechanism to resolve dependencies when the system is upgraded. If what Update Manager does is simple apt-get dist-upgrade, chances are that the system will accumulate with unresolved dependencies over the course of time. It would be safe to build a dependency tree, similar to what debian does, before packages are updated so that unresolved dependencies can be removed in the first place. Maintaining orphanaged packages as pointed out by jxself can be beneficial in one way, but for a stable OS distro like Trisquel, it is always advised to have resolve all dependencies so that the system remains robust.

Yes, PayPal is available in India, but the difficulty is that my national currency is not listed in the 'currency' drop down menu. https://trisquel.info/en/donate If I proceed to make a payment in dollars or euro, the transaction gets cancelled. Is there a way to get it listed among other currencies?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working
lembas, xkill surely closes the unresponsive task manager, but on reading its man pages I came to know it simply closes the connection with the server; eventhough most programs take a cue and terminate themselves, some programs continue to work. There is no guarentee that xkill will always kill your task manager; what if it fails to do so? It is better to use 'apt-get dist-upgrade' from a terminal until a permanent fix is made.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free hardware and open source and hp printers?
Hi Tonlee, I am having a HP Deskjet D1500 series printer. It works like charm with Trisquel GNU/Linux 6.0.1 LTS version. So I understand, atleast from software point of view, the HP Printers of D1500 series are completely compatible with free software. But the same may not be true for some latest models of HP.(You need to check it with your local HP vendor) Now coming to Hardware, it cannot be affirmated a Hardware which supports a free distribution to be 100% free; Reverse engineering the Technical schematics/Hardware Description code of the product(Here your Printer) with the permission of the company, alone can prove it indeed free. It can also be a possibility that a hardware that can work for a free distribution can also have non-free firmware blobs. So it would be wise to avoid using such a suspected device for communicating sensitive/private data.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free hardware and open source and hp printers?
Tonlee, I had written to fsf to add HP printer to their list of hardware that support free software, especially h-node a week ago. If possible please check whether thy have done it.
