Re: [Trisquel-users] orca Does not work in live cd
When installing Trisquel, I find that if I begin installing from a live session, Orca does not always work. However, if when booting I install Trisquel directly by selecting "Install Trisquel" instead of "Try Trisquel without Installing" Orca is always enabled after installing. signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Re: [Trisquel-users] Orca screen reader eating all my ram!
I think it better have to have assistive technologies enabled by default than disabled, but this seems to be a very common question. I can think of a few possible solutions - have a separate ISO with which assistive technologies are enabled by default during and after installation - have an option in the graphical installer to disable assistive technologies - have a pop-up on first log in to set accessibility options For now, there is a documentation page explaining how to uninstall Orca. https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/disabling-orca-screen-reader I think it is better to disable Orca than to uninstall gnome-orca, because gnome-orca is a dependency of the trisquel metapackage. In fact, gnome-app-install will refuse to uninstall gnome-orca (and any other package that is a dependency of trisquel) unless the trisquel metapackage has been removed via Synaptic or a terminal. signature.asc Description: PGP signature

> Turn it off at Startup applications, then reboot. Aha! That did it, and is a much better solution than having to kill the process every time I reboot. Thanks for this!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Orca screen reader eating all my ram!
>"Unfortunately, even with these options disabled (as shown in the attached screenshot), it still jabbered away to itself." I have seen this happen. Orca is buggy. Last time I installed T8 Orca misbehaved as usual. I couln't turn it off easily no matter what I did. Then I uninstalled it.

I couldn't find any such "Universal Access page" on the Control Centre in my Trisqel v8.0 instance, and "alt+super+s" didn't seem to do anything, but killing those speech-dispatcher processes really helped, thanks. Now I'm gonna go off and make a *.desktop file for that, so that I can kill it easily from the GUI. Thanks again for the help!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Orca screen reader eating all my ram!
You can stop and disable screen reader in the Universal Access page on Control Center, or just toggle it with 'alt+super+s'. You should also kill all the speech-dispatcher processes that orca launches. When you mute speech-dispatcher, it's still running. At any time, you can restart orca, then toggle it off when done. Re: [Trisquel-users] Orca screen reader eating all my ram!
> Isn't there a way to disable (rather than than mute) it from MATE's control center? Funnily enough, that was the first thing I tried, even before muting Orca, when I first installed Trisquel v8.0 on my machine. Unfortunately, even with these options disabled (as shown in the attached screenshot), it still jabbered away to itself. That is why I muted it eventually, just to shut it up! 😜
[Trisquel-users] Orca screen reader eating all my ram!
Hi all, does anybody know what is going on here? I muted the Orca screen reader from the outset, because I don't need it myself, but I didn't uninstall it, as I figured it would be good to be able to demonstrate that particular functionality when I show off my Trisquel v8.0 installation to others. However, I have noticed my machine slowing down a lot, recently. When I checked htop, arranged by MEM% and sorted highest to lowest, the top memory hogs were all the Orca screen reader. I killed the processes for this session, and my RAM usage has gone way back down to acceptable levels. However, just killing the processes means, naturally, that the next time I reboot I will have the same problem. I still don't want to uninstall Orca if I can help it, but I would like to know how to prevent it from hogging all my RAM. Any ideas?

[Trisquel-users] orca Screen Reader on Sugar?
My friend has been tasked with making Sugar learning environment accessible, by means of the Orca screen reader, on a OLPC machine. I tried running orca on Trisquel Sugar; There must be missing pieces; orca did not talk. I'm not sure where to tell my friend to start but promised I'd ask for some ideas on here. If you can help, please contact my friend, Brandon Werner, directly. am_d...@fastmail.com or me on gnusocial: davehunt@social.2mb.solutions Thanks, Dave
Re: [Trisquel-users] orca
Orca starting When Trisquel starts is not a bug or problem; turn off or remove orca if you find it disruptive.
Re: [Trisquel-users] orca
I started the Onboard on-screen-keyboard a few weeks ago. I played with it for a little while, and then turned it off. It still appears at the log-in screen. It doesn't appear after I log in. I don't mind that Onboard appears at the log-in screen. But I don't think that it should appear at log-in after I turned it off. Posting just in case it's related to Orca starting up at log-in.
Re: [Trisquel-users] orca
I stopped orca from accessibility settings from the "System Settings". But when restart system orca start

Re: [Trisquel-users] orca screen reader in installer
Those who need orca cannot easily install it, nor can they use a live system without it. To me, no orca is a black screen. Orca can be easily removed or deactivated. This said, we may be able to build the production Trisquel 7 without the automatic startup of orca on the live system, since gnome now has a universal toggle 'alt+super+s' to toggle the screen reader. As long as orca and its dependencies are installed, this should work. Once a system is installed, and the user logs in, she can activate orca with the toggle, and it will automatically activate for subsequent logins by that user. If we are to decide to eliminate the automatic orca startup on the live medium, I would ask that a sound be played, to indicate that the desktop is ready; The Trisquel 5.0 I18N edition had some music for this, and I found it helpful.
Re: [Trisquel-users] orca screen reader in installer
I'm sure the people who need it would disagree. Uninstalling for people who don't takes a few seconds. Accessibility is an important feature.
Re: [Trisquel-users] orca screen reader in installer
Being blind on a system that you're not familiar with which doesn't help the blind probably makes using it for anything difficult, and that includes installing packages and installing the OS itself in the first place. Not being blind and closing Orca (you don't need to uninstall it) is a far more trivial task.
Re: [Trisquel-users] orca screen reader in installer
I do not know why there is Orca. Im sure more time is spent uninstalling it than people who need it would have to spend installing it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] orca screen reader in installer
I didn't had that problem when installing Trisquel 6.0, but when I decided to install Trisquel 6.1, Orca suddenly appeared (both during the install and after). If you don't need Orca, then just uninstall it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] orca screen reader in installer
I believe Orca is activated if you leave the welcome screen alone right after booting for some time. (30 secs or so)
[Trisquel-users] orca screen reader in installer
I'm not sure if a new build was released or if I'm doing something dumb but I downloaded a fresh copy of the Trisquel desktop installer and it's plagued with Orca screen reader. It shows up during the installer, on the login screen, and after logging in. Is this user error or an issue with the installer?
[Trisquel-users] Orca Does Not Speak in Pidgin or Libreoffice Apps in 5.5 Beta dated 11-March
Hi, I did a full install of the subject beta, and am trying to use the applications as provided in the disk image and repositories. When I launch any of the libreoffice aplications, orca speaks while the app is loading. Once the app's window has focus, orca is silent, until I either close the app or switch to another. Same behavior in pidgin, though the sign-in notifications for pidgin are spoken, accompanied by the log-in event sound. At first, I thought it had to do with my not having a '.purple' directory, so, I placed the one I had been using with Trisquel 5.0, where all works fine. Should I build a later version of orca from sources? Load the offending apps from some other repository? Both? Something else? Thanks, Dave
