And if you're going to do munge the address, please do it correctly.
Add ".invalid" on to the end, so that the folks that don't catch the
munge only clogg-up their own servers and not anybody else's. It's
not as much of an issue, if the domain is munged, but too often folks
munge the id, which leads to bounced e-mail when the munged address
is replied to.

We have a client that uses Remote Desktop on Linux and loves it. There
is also a version for the Mac. It should be a little "lighter" than

Citrix Metaframe Server may be a solution for you. Your VB front-end will
run on a Windows Citrix server, and it can be accessed by a thin client or
even a browser on most platforms. Mac Citrix clients are available for
both PowerPC and OS X.

We have some customers / prospects that use Macs as their desktop

Re: [U2] Citrix with Universe

2006-05-12 Thread Bill Hazard
Hi Mike,
Given that you're running a custom VB app, the question you pose is a bit more
about citrix/mac than it is about universe. Citrix will provide remote access
to any app from the citrix client. Your VB app will run on a windows box with
citrix server software. Citrix does have mac clients (9 and 10), so what you
suggest is certainly feasible. Issues related to running any app under citrix
include running multiple client instances (can your app run multiple instances
on one windows box?), scale (each citrix server will run multiple instances of
your app -- how many will you need to provide adequate performance?), security
(your users will have a "citrix logon" and an "application logon" unless you
take steps to merge 'em) and access to local resources (e.g., your app running
on a central citrix server may want to try to "print" to a "local" printer --
citrix helps here, but can be tricky).

VNC is another option, depending on needs. Much less ability (but hence,
simpler ...).

I've run citrix farms supporting 100s of concurrent users accessing an app from
50-100 locations over a WAN on various platforms. I'm not a big fan of Citrix,
but it is definately a best-of-class solution to a set of problems (I try to
avoid having this particular set of problems, but sometimes can't be avoided!).

Hope this helps and I'm sure others out there will have thoughts as well.
Bill

It's not paranoia if they really ARE after you. ;-)

Seriously, though -- we are careful about protecting our subscribers'
privacy. We have disabled the majordomo 'who' command, and closed the
'which @' security hole to prevent spammers from harvesting email addresses
en masse.

Unfortunately, those precautions don't stop someone from subscribing to the
list, and harvesting email addresses individually, from each post. They
also don't prevent someone from searching the archives (which are not under
my control) for email addresses.

RE: [U2] xls to text [off-topic] anti-spam address munging

2006-05-12 Thread Tony Gravagno
It's much more practical than protecting against packet sniffers. Anyone
can subscribe to the list and get addresses and anyone can go to the
archive (with a program) and harvest addresses from prior postings going
back a few years. It happens all the time and I do my best to avoid it.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

RE: [U2] D3 to U2 - how to import a FileSave tape

2006-05-12 Thread Bill Haskett
David:

IBM advises that those migrating an MV system to U2 select UniVerse not
UniData. UniData is not inherently multi-value aware and there are a number
of other issues that IBM suggests will be avoided by migrating to UniVerse.
So, take IBM's advice and move D3 to UniVerse not UniData.

When saving D3 data try the following:

1) prepare the D3 system for conversion,
+ this is your choice of what you want. The U2 products
are case sensitive. However, there are utilities in UV
to help with the conversion and they will upper-case
 everything for you.
+ make sure you don't use the PE version of UV unless no
file in D3 exceeds something like 60MB (I'm not sure
and would have to look this up to be sure).
2) do an account-save of the selected accounts to a "pseudo"
+ account-saves are the only supported method for transfer
   + do the following:
 :set-device {n} (where {n} is a "pseudo" device)
 :t-rew
 : select mds,, 'acct1''acct2''acct3'...
 {n} items selected.
 :account-save (a
  .
  .
 :t-rew
 :t-det
Note: the "pseudo" device you select may or may not be a
compressed device. I always recommend you save to a non-
compressed device. Don't mess with compression unless
you're ftp'ing the file over the internet. If so, use
whatever Linux tool exists to compress the file before
using ftp but after the D3 backup.
3) use the "D3RESTORE" program to restore onto UniVerse
+ place the "pseudo" file onto the UV system
+ create a new UV account from which to run D3RESTORE
+ start a UV session and log to the "UV" account
+ copy the new versions of CONVERT.VOC and D3RESTORE
 to the APP.PROGS file
   + run BASIC APP.PROGS D3RESTORE CONVERT.VOC
   + run CATALOG APP.PROGS *D3RESTORE D3RESTORE FORCE
   + run CATALOG APP.PROGS *CONVERT.VOC CONVERT.VOC FORCE
 (note: overwrite existing if asked)
+ LOGTO the account from which to run D3RESTORE
+ run the D3RESTORE program from TCL

General info from the account to run D3RESTORE from:
:CT VOC D3RESTORE (this item must exist locally)
 D3RESTORE
0001 V
0002 *D3RESTORE
0003 B
0004 BN
:LOGTO UV
:LONGNAMES ON NEWAC
All NEWACCs have been modified to use long file names.
:LOGTO {AccountToLaunchFrom}
:D3RESTORE INFILE {PathOfPseudo} - e.g. C:\IBM\d3save

Next run the CONVERT.VOC program, which should convert the VOC. I had
to recatalog the programs DC, DC.ITEM, and DC.CORR.CONV after
recompiling them. Recompile in local account then recatalog in "UV"
account.

I had some real difficulties with the "DC..." programs in UniVerse.
They didn't seem to work properly and I had to review them and
activate a bunch of lines of code to make it work properly. This
may be because I had the UV PE version. I still have these programs
and here's a list of the ones I changed:

CONVERT.VOC
DC
DC.A
DC.CORR.CONV
DC.F
DC.ITEM
DC.OPENS
D3RESTORE

Hope this helps a little. If you get this far ask and I'll offer whatever
help I can.

RE: [U2] Linked server fails when using Analysis services

2006-05-12 Thread Lettau, Jeff
Got it figured out. I found a similar issue with Oracle and the
solution was to check the Allow inprocess box on the Provider options
under Linked Servers, Providers in SQL.
Make sure you reboot and then it appears to be working.

Now I don't have to store my data in SQL to use the Analysis services to
build cubes.

Thanks for the suggestions. That all checked out ok and the views were
working, just not the Analysis services part.

I run into the similar situation while using linking Universe server in
SQL.

Eventually I got it fixed is:
1) check the User account and make sure it has right to read the
UniVerse tables.
2) make sure the column name used in UniVerse view is not uniVerse
reserved word.

If you could view the data from Excel via ODBC, most of time it should
work in SQL server.

Subject: [U2] Linked server fails when using Analysis services

I'm trying to build a cube in Analysis services in MS SQL. I've setup
my data source to the local database and I'm choosing a view that uses
an openquery to Unidata. The view works without issues, I can browse my
data inside the analysis services, but when I try to actually process
the cube I get this error.

Data source provider error: Cannot get the column information from OLE
DB provider "IBM.UniOLEDB" for linked server "M2K".;42000;The OLE DB
provider "IBM.UniOLEDB" for linked server "M2K" reported an error.
Access denied.;42000; Time:5/11/2006 10:34:05 AM

I'm guessing that there is a setting I can add to the linked server to
allow the column information being read? I don't want to take the time
to pull the data into a table in SQL since it is a load of data and
isn't necessary to archive in SQL. Can't I just use the linked server
with a view and build my cube? For my test I'm only pulling the top 9
rows so it's not like it's timing out or anything.

RE: [U2] VB6 UniObjects to VB.NET question

2006-05-12 Thread Welsh, Peter
We got around this one by creating a VB6 DLL that implemented only the
functionality we needed (file open and close, record read, DynArray
field/value/mv and oconv/iconv. If you are planning to use a lot of
functionality then it is a pain in the neck but if you only use a little
(like we do) then it a relatively painless way to get around things.

The only warning I would give is that our code worked great when it ran with
the push of a button on a form, but when we turned it into a Windows Service
it refused to get out of bed - everything ground to a halt at the first UO
call. It might have been something I did, though. We are using UniData 5.1
on DG/UX.

I am converting some VB6 code with UniObjects to VB.NET (2005). The
following

The third statement is the one that works on VB6 but take the On Error
routine in .NET.

Can someone explain to me what the problem is? (Yes, I could code around
this, but this kind of thing is done a lot in this code--not my code, BTW

Thanks, Jim

That's brilliant ... Except it doesn't work in Transaction State because
you can't do a "DOS /c ...", you get a 'Verb "DOS" illegal when a
transaction is active' error. Darn, it would have been really useful
otherwise.
That's why we need a UV-supported method.

But actually, if you're on UV 10.1 you can use the new GCI function
"UVRunCommand" [see Issue Number 5616 in the Release Notes] even in
transaction State.
Gee, another reason to upgrade! :-)
