RE: [U2] Server Processors (Universe) {Unclassified}

2008-01-02 Thread HENDERSON MIKE, MR
Dave,

We run our 250-user UniVerse system (10.1.x at the moment) on Windows
2003 Server.
We have 2 x quad-core Xeon E5345 2.33GHz/1333FSB and 3GB RAM (no point
in more on 32-bit O/S like Windows, Windows-64 could use more). So we
have eight actual CPU cores, and it shows as 8 CPUs in Windows Task
Manager.

Yes, multiple Telnet, phantom and uvcs (UniObjects) processes do
'spread' themselves across the available CPUs. This is completely
automatic and it 'just happens'.
An individual job is a single process (BUILD.INDEX and some sorts
excepted) and will run on a single CPU core.
To get a single job to run across multiple processors, you would have to
re-architect it as a controlling process splitting up the data and
somehow allocating it to a number (# CPUs - 2?) of phantom processes to
run in parallel. I know of an ISV who looked seriously at this, but
decided they didn't need to bother, the Moore's Law 'free lunch' solved
their throughput issues! :-)

Happy New Year

Mike

Re: [U2] UD read anomolies

2008-01-02 Thread Martin Phillips

Hi Bill,

Is it possible that the phantom is starting up twice or the file is being
opened simultaneously by two processes for some other reason?

The reason I ask is that we have encountered a very strange behaviour of the
anti-virus software that we use here. If two processes attempt to open a
file (any file, not just a database file) at the same time, one will
frequently fail with a permissions error. Disabling the anti-virus system
makes it all work ok. There is no problem having the file open to multiple
processes; it is just that the actual file open operations must not overlap.

We have sent a simple test program that demonstrates this to the anti-virus
vendor and are awaiting their response.

I donbt understand how reading a forum is any different to reading an email ??
- except that the date/time order is always correct and it does not clog your
mail, and you get dozens of forum style benefits which of course you do not
have to take as it then implies spending time on that darn web thing ? -
Infact it takes me longer with the email list as I have to do my own
housekeeping and setup my mail client to place all the mails in a separate
folder and then go through and delete the emails etc. On a forum I just go to
it, look at what has changed since I last logged in and come away again all
happy and relaxed.

The reason why we all use the list is because everyone is on here, I use the
forum as well but no one is on there so it is pointless. The point is if we all
used a forum (the existing one or a new one) we would get certain things that
people complain about fixed like the time lag - which gets me on virtually
every post.

I don't use forums. I read this mailing list in my spare time, or snatch
moments at work. I find forums time-consuming, and a pain, and I have
better things to do with my time (like working :-)

At the end of the day, all too often I find that the web is a solution
in search of a problem. It's the wrong tool for many jobs, and imho this
is one of those situations.

I rest my case with the fact that other people have pointed out - there
ARE fora out there, including those on u2ug. Why are the fora unused
while the mailing list carries on regardless? I put it to you - the
reason is that most people worth listening to prefer a mailing list.

[U2] List v Forum

2008-01-02 Thread Susan Joslyn
The digest works really well to resolve many of your complaints. The only
time it is a disadvantage is when I'm waiting for an answer. Then I always
try to say "please email me directly with any responses" and folks usually
do. The rest of the time I'm not bombarded with the emails, they are
stacked into the digest in a reasonable facsimile of "order", you can see
how many responses are in a thread. If it were my perfect world, the digest
summary at the top would be hyperlinks to the message in the body, but they
aren't. But still, it works pretty well for me.

[U2] list vs. email

2008-01-02 Thread Jerry Banker
Maybe you didn't get my last message. It doesn't matter around here if a
forum is better or not, the PHB's will not allow the users to surf the
net even to get email. At one time I was registered on this list as my
personal hotmail account but I had to stop using it because they blocked
access to hotmail. I also have accounts at yahoo and my space but those
are or were blocked so I have to use my business email account to keep
from having it blocked. The only other way would be to only look at the
questions and responses from home afterhours; in that case I would be an
observer and not a participant. Personally I like to think on occasion I
have helped someone on this list instead of just gathering the knowledge
of these fine people without giving anything back.

2008-01-02 Thread Thomas Derwin
Hi Bill,

Can't be sure without seeing the actual code, but my guess is that the
CLEAR-FILE on MVNET.READIMAGES is still running when a subsequent
command tries to use the file.

CLEAR-FILE on Unidata is essentially a DELETE-FILE followed by a
CREATE-FILE with the original modulo and block size. If you try to
access the file before the CREATE-FILE is finished, you get the
" is not a UniData data file" message.

Similar to Martin's response - we have an overnight process that gets
hammered every once in a while when it hits a file that is in the
process of being backed up and the backup software locks it. Depending
on the site we either reschedule one (or both) processes so they don't
overlap or we set the "back-up without setting a file lock" setting on
the back-up software.

Thanks. No anti-virus software because these machines aren't really on the
internet.
Backup is being done by NTBackup about an hour earlier than this process runs.

An interesting comment by Tom Derwin though; that UD deletes the file than
recreates
is during a CLEAR.FILE action. I don't know if the mv.NET cleanup uses a
clear-file,
but it probably does.

RE: [U2] UD read anomolies

2008-01-02 Thread Bill Haskett
Thomas:

Whooaa!

I wrote a phantom that continually runs in the background and wakes up every
minute
(on the minute). It reads a "SERVICES" file to see if anything is scheduled to
run
at the particular week, day, hour, and minute (kind of like "cron"). If it
finds
something it "phantoms" that command by doing a:

RunCmd = "LOGTO {DefinedAcct}"
RunCmd<-1> = CommandToRun

EXECUTE \PHANTOM \ : RunCmd

...then the cron service sleeps until the top of the next minute.

MV.NET, as does DesignBais and other software, always leaves an account full of
_PH_
and _SAVEDLISTS_ items along with new files. The mv.NET cleanup process is
supposed
to clean up all this. In the above service I wrote a program to do the mv.NET
cleanup. It tests to see if mv.NET is connected to the dbms/account then does
the
following:

** Test if mv.NET is connected to this account
.
** Cleanup account
IF NOT(IsConnected) THEN
   DATA "YES"
   EXECUTE \MVNET.HOUSEKEEPALL\ CAPTURING OUTPUT
   GOSUB TRANSFORM.MSG
   CleanUpMsg<1,-1> = OUTPUT
*
** Clean up the LISTINFO list file
   EXECUTE \SELECT LISTINFO = "MVNET_]"\ CAPTURING OUTPUT
   IF SYSTEM(11) THEN
  LOOP
 READNEXT LISTID ELSE EXIT
 EXECUTE \DELETE-LIST \ : LISTID CAPTURING OUTPUT
 DelCnt += 1
  REPEAT
  IF DelCnt > 0 THEN
 OUTPUT = CleanUpMsg ; GOSUB TRANSFORM.MSG
 CleanUpMsg<1,-1> = DelCnt : " MVNET lists deleted."
  END
   END
END ELSE
CleanUpMsg = "Can't cleanup while a connection exists."
END
CALL LOGMSG ('', 'N/A', CleanUpMsg, '')
*
GOTO END.OF.PROGRAM

I guess it's possible that in the middle of the night someone accesses our .NET
web
site, that accesses this particular account in the UD database, in the
milliseconds
between the time I test for a connection and the time I execute the mv.NET
housekeeping program in the code above. But it sure seems like this is a low
probability.

Thanks,

Bill
