[U2] ODBC question

2006-06-08 Thread Dana Baron
Hi,

While we're talking Unidata ODBC...

I'm having trouble getting UNIDATA ODBC working here. Server is Tru64 Unix.
Client is windows. UCI seems to be set up correctly. I can access the data
and create views, etc with VSG. But, when I try to import or link to the
data from Access or Excel, I get the following error:

The ODBC screen pops up with most of the parameters filled in, except my
password. I put in the password (and yes, I've tried it a million times and
the password is correct!) and an error pop-up says:

[Ardent][Unidata ODBC Driver][IBM][SQL Client][UNIDATA]Server is not
authorized

Anyone have any suggestions?

RE: [U2] ODBC question

2006-06-08 Thread Dana Baron
Hi Marc,

Good question. Yes we have licenses for both Unidata and ODBC, however, our
server crashed hard a few months ago and I had to re-install Unidata (and
just about everything else). I haven't tried using ODBC since then. It could
be that the ODBC license wasn't re-installed correctly.

RE: [U2] Changes to the List

2006-03-16 Thread Dana Baron
I would like to make a suggestion. The u2 users list has been in existence
for a LONG time. Currently, the list is managed by the U2 User Group. (Up
until yesterday, I was a member of the u2ug board, but my term expired). I
would suggest that the u2ug board appoint a small team of people to
investigate the options for communication to the u2 communities and come
back with recommendations to the board. The investigation should look at all
available options, listing the pros and cons of each. And it should include
polling of the user community.

This clearly a topic of interest to a lot of people. I imagine there are
even a few people out there who wouldn't mind serving on this suggested
team.

RE: [U2] [UD] Escaping a Quote

2006-02-27 Thread Dana Baron
You can use single quotes in the SELECT statement.

Example: SELECT FILE.NAME WITH @ID EQ '1234'

will select the record with an id equal 1234 in quotes.

(I tried it and it worked)

both and \ characters? What then? Or what if the value contains a

RE: [U2] openseq question

2006-01-04 Thread Dana Baron
Several years ago I created a little utility to open sequential files as
needed. It's pretty robust; hasn't given me much trouble over the years.
Like Kevin, I've had problems with the full path version of openseq, so my
utility converts full path mode to VOC pointer mode and creates the VOC
pointer if it doesn't already exist.

I'll include it below and attach it in text form.

RE: [U2] Help!

2005-08-14 Thread Dana Baron
It's now Sunday, so hopefully Wally Terhune and U2 support helped you get
your system back up and healthy.

Greetings,

Thanks to everyone for their support, moral and technical, throughout this
ordeal. The U2 support folks were GREAT!, especially Paul Chang and Jim
Abshire. I'm not out of the woods yet, but I'm in much better shape now than
yesterday at this time!

Some things that helped:
I ran a sys_check after the first crash, which saved a lot of important
information in a .html file
Almost all of my Unidata install was on a separate disk which was
unaffected by the crash
After the second crash, we saw where we were headed and had everyone
start
preparing for the worst while the system was available
And excellent support from both IBM (UniData) and HP (the OS)

Some things I still have to figure out:
Print queues seem to be set up correctly, but they're not printing (jobs
hang in the queue)
We're running on a 40-user 30-day temporary license. Gotta fix that
Monday.
Our normal login routines aren't working. (see below)
And I have to rebuild a lot of OS startup files, etc

Login procedure problem: We used to point user logins to a udt startup
script by naming it as the shell in /etc/passwd. So, for example, a user
name TEST would have as the default shell in /etc/password something like
/unidata/local/bin/udtlogin. That script would set UDTBIN, UDTHOME, etc then
cd to the unidata account directory, then start unidata. The advantage of
this is that the user never gets to the Unix command prompt. When they leave
Unidata, their session goes away. It doesn't work now for some reason. It
never goes into Unidata. Instead the session starts up then ends abruptly.

OK, back to work I go.

[U2] Help!

2005-08-13 Thread Dana Baron
Hi folks,

Here's your worst nightmare come true: your production system crashes with a
bad system disk. You find that the backups you've been doing every day don't
backup the system, only the data. Now you have to get up and running - fast.
Well, that's where I'm sitting right now. I think I'm going to need some
help from UniData, but it may be hard to reach them on a Saturday so I
thought I'd try the list. Here's what I have:

There is a new hard disk in the system.
I'm installing a clean OS (Tru64 Unix) right now.
The data, including most of the Unidata install, is on a disk array and
appears to be safe for now.
After the OS install finishes, I need to get UniData up and running.

One component I will be missing is the stuff in /usr/ud511, which includes
udtconfig.

Anything else I might need? Anyone know where I can get a good udtconfig for
this? I have the UniData CD, but I don't want to re-install this unless I
have to.

Thanks in advance.

RE: [U2] AUTOLOGOUT

2005-07-14 Thread Dana Baron
remember that you need to 'exec' uv to overlay the current process or it
will create a subprocess to run UniVerse. In which case, the autologout
will
simply be returning them to their calling shell.

We take a shortcut on using startup files like .profile. Instead, we put an
entry into /etc/passwd for users that we want going directly to Unidata. In
the field used to designate the user's shell, we put a reference to a login
file that starts up Unidata. Since this then becomes the user's shell, once
the shell ends, the process goes away. For example:

juser:*:238:15:Joe User,Reservations
Dept,1131,:/usr/users/juser:/unidata/local/bin/udtlogin

The last entry points to a udtlogin which sets all the necessary environment
variable, changes directory to the top of our Unidata application menu, then
starts udt:

# Define environment variables and set PATH, then start udt

No - we don't provide a utility to recompile all user application programs.

But recompiling all, or a subset, of Basic programs is very easy. Where
Basic programs are stored in a directory referred to as BP:

SELECT BP (WITH any criteria)

[U2] [UD] LINE.ATT for attaching serial line

2005-03-01 Thread Dana Baron
Greetings,

I'm trying to write a Unidata program to interface with another system via
the serial port (/dev/tty01) on a Compaq Tru64 system. I'm wondering if
anyone has any experience with this that may be able to offer some advice.
Specifically, according to the published protocol, I need to wait for an ENQ
(ascii 5) and I reply with ACK (ascii 6). It goes on from there but I won't
bore you with the details. Until today, I couldn't get the other system to
recognize my ACK. Today I got it working by making a small change to the
LINE.ATT command that attaches the line - I added the DELAY parameter.
This got it working for the first exchange but not for subsequent exchanges.
All of this is by way of asking:

Does anyone have any more detail on how LINE.ATT with DELAY works or is
supposed to work? (the page from the manual is shown below. Not much
detail.)

Thanks,

Dana Baron
System Manager
Smugglers' Notch Resort

Page from manual for LINE.ATT command:

LINE.ATT

Syntax
LINE.ATT line [DELAY]

Synonym
LINE-ATT

Description
The ECL LINE.ATT command attaches a communication line to the current
process. The
attaching process then has exclusive use of that line until it is detached
with the LINE.DET
command. A single process can attach up to five resources per UniData
session.

Warning
On some platforms, you must specify DELAY in LINE.ATT to avoid problems with
subsequent
UniBasic SEND commands overlaying data.

This is part of an effort to interface with a Squirrel POS system. The tty
port connects to a Systech brand serial port server. It's a box that sort
of converts serial to Ethernet. It has an IP address that is known by the
Squirrel server. Data going back and forth between the two systems is sent
over the network between the server and the serial port server. It's then
converted to/from serial. The interface protocol defines the structure and
content of the messages between machines. It's all based on serial
communications, with ASCII characters used to control the signaling (ENQ,
ACK, NAK, STX, ETX, etc).

Until now, I've been frustrated in my attempts to get the Squirrel system to
understand my ACK response to its ENQ. It usually figures it out after the
fourth or fifth try, but by then it's too late. Working with Squirrel
support, I learned that the buffer had data other than my ACK in it when it
arrived. I tried using the DELAY parameter on the LINE.ATT command and
suddenly Squirrel understood the ACK on the first try.

The Unidata manual says: Warning On some platforms, you must specify DELAY
in LINE.ATT to avoid problems with subsequent UniBasic SEND commands
overlaying data. So, I guess I'm having problems with my SEND commands
overlaying data. Now I'd like more detail on what this means and how to get
around it.

(And to think, some people get to play around with UniObjects and other cool
things!)

Ed Clark wrote:

So, 2 questions: first, are you seeing the ENQ (and is there any associated
data with the ENQ?);
I'm seeing the ENQ fine. Unfortunately, I need to work with Squirrel support
to help debug this, but they report that they're seeing my ACK embedded in
other data, things like CR LF, etc, but the data is not consistent. They
look only at the first character and if its not an ACK, they ignore it. Once
I changed to use DELAY, Squirrel recognized the ACK on the first try.

second, what is the baud rate/parity of the systech, and where are you
setting it? If you are getting the ENQ and sending an ACK that's
unrecognized, maybe you've got the wrong parity.
It seems that the baud and parity are all fine since I can see the data
correctly at both ends, it just isn't matching the protocol, and as I said
above the data I'm sending is getting mixed up with other stuff. And the
DELAY parameter on the LINE.ATT helps sort things out, at least for the
first SEND.

Finally, it sounds like your POS is using tcp to talk to the systech, and
then you're using serial for the systech to talk to unidata. Would it be
possible to use tcp sockets and go directly from the POS to unidata without
the impediment of a serial link?
I've explored that option with Squirrel (the POS brand), and unfortunately
it's a no go. I can't understand why not in this day and age, but I'm
playing with their toys.

Thanks for the follow-up questions.

[U2] Writeseq quirkiness - the answer

2004-12-20 Thread Dana Baron
Greetings,

And the prize goes to Kevin King! He came up with the write answer to
solve my writeseq problem. Of course, he had an advantage since he helped
write the application in the first place. Still, I was stumped and his
answer worked. Thank you (once again!), Kevin.

For those who care: To understand the solution, you need a little more
background. The code segment I sent is part of an application that manages
the interface between my Unidata application and a third-party device, which
in turn manages the interface with a bunch of other devices. When I want to
send data out of my application, I create a file with a .out extension and
write the appropriately formatted data to the file. A program written by
Kevin King sits out there looking for files with .out extensions. When it
finds one, it reads the file and sends the data to the third-party device.
It then deletes the file. And this is wherein lay the problem, and the
solution.

What was happening was, my program would open the file (OPENSEQ) and Kevin's
program would come along and try to read it, then delete it, then I'd try to
write to it (WRITESEQ), but by then it was gone. I changed the code a little
bit to open the file with a .tmp extension, write to that, then rename it to
.out. Works great!

There are still a few mysteries: why does the original code work for just
about every situation, then suddenly fail for one new situation that is
seemly the same as all the others? But heck, it works so I'll go with it.

Thanks to everyone who responded with a solution. And the u2 list comes
through again!

[U2] [UD]WRITESEQ quirkiness

Here's a puzzler: what is it that causes the ELSE clause to be executed in a

from two subsequent calls. In the first, the code executes the THEN clause

Well, we still have about 5 days left in the voting period, so we may see

equivalent to the US election turnout you mentioned. While a 20% turnout for

On our system, the database path information is kept on the Unidata server

like:

DATABASE=AHS
UDTHOME=/unidata/ud5211

Do you have a ud_database file? Where is it and what are the permissions to

According to IBM the unaligned access message is normal and is disabled by

We use Unidata 5.2 on Tru64 and I've never seen the unaligned access message

behavior specific to Unidata 6? Will we have issues if we ever upgrade to UD

[U2] U2UG Needs You

2004-07-09 Thread Dana Baron
Greetings,

If you're on this e-mail list, you're probably at least vaguely aware of the
existence of a nascent U2 users group. And if you're mildly curious, you may
be asking yourself, and others, whatever happened to that group.

Well there has been a lot going on behind the scenes. We have a founding
board working to create an international organization with by-laws,
elections and such. Here are some of the things the board has been doing so
far, some visible, some not:

1. In May Clif Oliver handed over the management of this list to the U2UG.
2. There is a U2UG website: http://www.u2ug.org/
3. The U2UG is organizing a general meeting to coincide with the IBM Data
Management Conference in September (see the web site for details).
4. The board has been working on ways to share information about U2 beyond
the lists and the web site.

All of this with just 13 members of the founding board! And that's the
reason for this message. We've reached the point where we need help. Your
help. Here is a list of the volunteer opportunities available to you in
helping to bring this valuable organization into a thriving existence.

1. Nominations committee - We need people to help run the nominating
committee. They will help conduct an honest election. We need to begin this
process by September 2004.
2. Web site help - help us manage the content on the web site.
3. We also need everyone to consider contributing content. We need your
success stories, funny stories about the SORT verb, articles about
multivalue database theory, whatever you have.
4. Newsletter - we need department editors and contributors.
5. U2 Promotion - We need people who are willing to put a U2UG member
sticker and link on their home pages (personal and corporate) and otherwise
promote these powerful products.

Looking forward to your support,

Dana Baron
System Manager
Smugglers' Notch Resort

P.S. - If you received two copies of this message its probably because you
are a member of both the U2-community and U2-users lists.
