Re: [U2] Calling U2UG Members
As a board member for the past four years and one who is standing for Vice President I will respond. The user group is for all the members of the U2 community whether they are Rocket employees, end users, ISVs, consultants, Distributors or anyone else. The user group has a number of principles or aims but, to be honest, it is not really fulfilling any of them very well currently and that needs to change. A major problem is lack of resource, the board meet for an hour every other week, everyone is busy, things take a long time to happen and that needs to be addressed. I believe that it can only change by working with other organisations in the U2 space whether that be Rocket, Distributors, ISVs or whoever else. The group needs to find a role that is complementary to the other parts of the community but not beholden to any one of them, including Rocket, but our aims are the same, we are all interested in the success of U2. Rocket are supportive of U2UG but aside from this list, which technically is not part of the user group, and the website there is little to support and that needs to change. I feel that the most powerful role the group can take is to facilitate a community not just for the exchange of technical information but also for commercial details. For example how many people really understand the case to be put forwards commercially and technically to support the use of U2? We need to work with the people who have that information and get it into the community. The provision of information on where to find things like training and consultancy, information on who uses U2 and what they use it for, these are all things that I believe that the U2 community would benefit from but to unlock that we need to work with the people who have the information. It is hard because I'm not sure many people think about what they want from the group, to a certain extent the board needs to lead by action and see what take up we get. Any ideas on what people think the group should do would be very welcome. I hope people will vote and obviously I hope they will vote for me! But whoever you vote for please be free with your comments on the direction the group should take, with a new President in David Jordan we have an opportunity to review the direction and I'm sure I speak for the whole of the board when I say that we would welcome any comment or debate on what that direction should be. Re: [U2] Calling U2UG Members
Dan Absolutely you should vote..! The U2UG is best served through its relationship with Rocket, so there is nothing to prevent members from Rocket from voting, standing or otherwise contributing. In fact, the more the merrier. (We do have Rocket U2UG members - though many haven't updated their email addresses from the IBM days so will have had their membership paused - otherwise we run foul of the anti-span people over here by having too many bounces when the newsblasts go out). And Wol is right, the main requirements for someone standing for elections are a) that they are/have been for a period a U2UG member at the time of their nomination and b) that they disclose their interests. So in the unlikely event that Larry Ellison signed up and wanted to stand - we feel the membership ought to be told. There's lots more stuff about that in our charter, which is available to view on the website. And regarding your questions, the board has been discussing pretty much exactly those same questions (and more) over the last month leading up to putting together our program for next year.. so any thoughts you or any other members may have would be welcomed. The U2UG is not a secret organisation and we(*) genuinely welcome contributions and ideas from everyone. Brian (*)That's "we", if I get re-elected, or "they", if I don't. When we set up the U2UG, that was one of the things we discussed. And seeing as you are eligible to stand in the elections, it would be a bit of a poor show if you couldn't vote! If you hunt up the constitution, it demands "full disclosure" if you work for a MultiValue vendor. That's all. If you wanted to stand for the committee, so long as you put "I am a Rocket employee, and Rocket own U2" on your manifesto, that's fine. I can't speak for the current committee, but when I was on it we had several IBM as it was then people speak at meetings, and we would have been only too happy to have an IBM person elected on to it. Hold on, That is the quoted text from my email to this list last year. I don't think there is anyone on the Rocket U2 team that has not heard of U2UG. Also, there is many more than 20 U2 people here at Rocket.
