Apparently, the HOST install script is not included in the trial version. I
received a note from IBM that they are sending me a more robust trial CD
that has all of this functionality on it.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

Ok, first, I am new to wIntegrate. I downloaded the trial version, and
installed it on an XP pro machine which also runs the UniVerse personal

Note:trial version can be obtained at:

How do I get the server portion of wIntegrate installed? If it is due to
the personal edition of UV, is there a way to install the server portion of
wIntegrate trial on a real UV license? (this would be UV 10).

I've looked through the manuals, and I am obviously missing something. Can
someone point me in the right direction?

I don't think the server version is available on the free download.

I've found the server version to require a lot of overhead on the host

The trial version gives you 100% of wIntegrate otherwise.

UV write fatal error

2004-02-12 Thread Jimi DeRouen
I am attempting to write a record to a type 25 file and apparently
getting a fatal error. The platform is UV 9.5.1.1b Pick flavor on W2K
SP4. I have constructed the WRITE statement to include all possible (I
think) branching, yet the program goes to the command prompt when the
WRITE is executed without following any of the branches. The WRITE
statement is as follows:

WRITE IP.REC ON IP,IPADDRESSID ON ERROR
CRT "WRITE TOOK ON ERROR BRANCH"
 CRT "STATUS: ":STATUS()
END LOCKED
 CRT "WRITE TOOK LOCKED BRANCH"
 CRT "STATUS: ":STATUS()
END THEN
 CRT "WRITE TOOK THEN BRANCH"
 CRT "STATUS: ":STATUS()
END ELSE
 CRT "WRITE TOOK ELSE BRANCH"
 CRT "STATUS: ":STATUS()
END

I am stepping through the program in the debugger, and have verified
that the file IP is open, the record id IPADDRESSID is valid, the record
data IP.REC is valid, and the record does not already exist in the
destination file. The program has done a BSCAN on the destination file
prior to the write to verify the record does not already exist or
conflict with the record to be written. This BSCAN has completed
successfully, leaving a group lock. The WRITE statement then dumps me to
the TCL prompt without taking any of the above branches. It almost seems
to me to be an OS level write error somehow not being trapped by
Universe. It only occurs on this particular data value which leads me to
believe that it is failing on a particular disk location.

I gratefully await the group's wisdom.

Hello,
I we have been given the task of redesigning our existing software to
handle multiple currencies. This means that at any time on the screen you
could switch from USD to EUR, or USD to SGD (Singapore dollar) and back again.

i was thinking of using FUNCTION. then depending on the customer's currency
code redisplay the amount. obviously i need to read some control file that
contains the conversion factor for that particular day. btw: i have decided
that is better to write amounts in USD, since our accounting will be done

does anybody have any suggestions, opinions??? any feed back will be

This used to be available in the "UniVerse Internals" class. When IBM acquired the

they are not longer published.
Unless you can find someone prepared to share an old copy of the "UniVerse Internals"

Use WITHDTD to have UniData include the DTD in the XML document it creates.
If you need a separate document then you will have to create it manually
(possibly use the WITHDTD to generate and do a cut-n-paste).

Subject:RE: 2 gig limits

The limit is an old one from Unix having 32-bit addressing. On a system
with
32-bit addressing, the limit applied to all files, including backup images

(at least to disk - I'm not certain about on tape drives, although I'd
assume so). Now, we have 64-bit addressing, so the upper limit is in the
pentabyte range. UniVerse and Unidata still have a default configuration
parameter of 32-bit addressing. This parameter is easily changed to 64.

Currently, the cost associated with going to 64-bit addressing for
UniVerse
& Unidata is the loss of a particular tool which is useful in repairing
file
corruption, filepeek. File corruption is pretty rare, but not unheard of,
especially as hardware fails. By going to a scheme like RAID0+1 with
transaction logging, you probably won't miss (watch the thread this
starts...) filepeek. As an aside, reducing the amount of data in overflow
reduces the risk of corruption, by minimizing the number of links, which
are
failure points.

So you can enable U2 64-bit addressing in the (udt/uv)config file, which
will then make the limit a historical curiosity. Or you can use dynamic
files (although at the most - with a lot of luck - this gives you 4Gb), or

in UniVerse you can use distributed files, which imho are a better choice
anyway, making the size of a file limited only by your disk drive budget.

Two things: First, you will probably find Lee's archive to be more
complete. He loaded all of the very early info-vmark list stuff as well
when he set up his archives.

Second: Don't yell at me about the www.mail-archive.com thing. It was
done by some unknown person who didn't ask me, to my recall did not ask
the list, and did it on their own.

What I was going to say, is that the list is archived at
mail-archive.com with a simple HTML interface, and it should be possible
to script "clicking" each link and storing the results locally.

mail-archive.com gets indexed, while I've never had posts in the other
archive (to which I can't find a link anywhere??) show up on a Google
search.)

Re: SQL Server and Crystal Reports

2004-02-12 Thread David Beahm
Recent projects (not related to migrating away from U2, fortunately)
have landed two of these on my desk:

"Mastering Crystal Reports 9" by Cate McCoy and Gord Maric

"SQL Server 7: A Beginner's Guide" by Dusan Petkovic

The CR manual is pretty sharp -- I only ran into trouble when trying to
develop custom VB and web interfaces, and then only because of some
less-documented "features" that a lot of other people on the community
site ran into. If you want things like that solved quickly, be prepared
to pay for support. (Note: CR version 10 was released just last month,
and this book was published before CR 9 was available.) I can also
offer VB source code for a standalone viewer.

The SQL manual steps fairly lightly, introducing basics before going
into details, and it covers the various parts of SQL Server pretty well.
I've had to use trial and error to make some fairly basic relational
tables with useful constraints, but having a decent client like
SQLExecMS (www.laplas-soft.com) is a tremendous help. You might want
another book that focuses on Transact-SQL to flesh this one out.

Just an observation: I was really disappointed that with version 9 CR
has completely abandoned the standalone report viewer as a means of
distribution. I'm sure doing so simplifies their support, shows their
ability to support web interfaces, and generates better licensing
revenue, but I didn't appreciate all the extra work it took to
distribute a few reports to just a handful of users.

HTH,

RE: UniOLEDB Threading issue

2004-02-12 Thread Nick Southwell
Thanks David, I suppose we assumed as many would that
an OLEDB driver would handle concurrent requests
especially when the documentation talks about
UniOLEDB's support for free threading.

Frustrating as hell, looks like we will move
to a SQL Server caching solution. I have the theory of
bidirectional sync in my head, triggers from SQL populating
Unidata and I'm thinking about triggers from Unidata
populating a control table which SQL polls. Not sure if the
Unidata -> SQL can be done in a more efficient manner.

Funny enough the first response from IBM was to use their
"wonderful" redback product instead.

Thanks

Nick

Ah, if only you had asked the list (or check the archives), before you
started...someone would've let you know about this 'feature'. Both U2
products have this same feature, IIRC.

Lots of others have found out the hard way too. Many have gone the way
of connection pools or some other middleware. IBM would like you to use
Redback, which is their official 'middleware' for U2 products.

There are stacks of postings in the online archives, which discuss what
your after. Some are useful, like this...

http://www.indexinfocus.com/dl/u2list/200303/47846.html

Although this article talks about UV, some of the concepts may also be
applicable to UD...

Using Unidata 5.1 on AIX.

We've developed a web based application which uses UniOLEDB to
read/write from Unidata. After a lot of hair pulling we've discovered
that although the OLEDB provider appears to thread correctly the udsrv
process on Unidata serialises all requests. This has effectively left us
with an application that supports one concurrent user!

Just wondered if anyone else had experienced similar issues, I opened a
case with IBM to be told it won't be fixed in the near future.

Looking at a complete rewrite with Raining Data's Pick Data Provider.
Anyone using it?

Thanks

Nick

Unidata, Monitoring system parameters

2004-02-12 Thread Hogan, James
>From time to time we have customers who break a Unidata parameter and the
program they are running will crash with errors such as "No more entries in
MI table in 'LCT -n'". In this instance the SHM_LMINENTS parameter will need
increasing (on AIX you may have to increase SHM_GNPAGESZ instead!). Very
likely the program being run will be large and critical to the user's
business.

I have had a look at the commands "sms", "gstt" and "lstt". With some clever
scripting these could be used to take snap shots of the system periodically
to check for an over step of the parameters. The script could then warn the
user if any parameter is over 80% utilised.

So has anyone done this already ?

RE: Universe/RedBack on Linux

2004-02-12 Thread Brian Leach
Baruch,

Which side of RedBack are you thinking about siting under Linux?

Here's what we have:

- Client (i.e. Web Server) side we run on IIS under Win2K/Win2003.
- Server side we run against UniVerse on Linux for development.

Our customers happen to be running UniVerse on Win2K or on UNIX for their
live systems There do not seem to be any noticeable differences in
performance here - none are running it live on Linux so I can't confirm the
scalability, but we have run almost all of our UniVerse systems against
Linux for years and found it to be solid and I can see no reasons why
RedBack should not perform as well under Linux as it does under UNIX. Having
said that, having a good level of Linux knowledge in-house helps.

I'm not sure whether I'd risk running the Client (Web Server) side against
Apache though - there are plug in ASP modules (e.g. Chillisoft) but I have
not heard of anyone making serious use of them. I stand to be corrected if
anyone on the list has.

Regards,

Brian

RE: UV on SCO Unix

2004-02-12 Thread Anthony Youngman
I'm following the court case. I don't expect there'll be much left of
SCO once the court case explodes in their face. Which might well be a
lot sooner than they expect - the motions for summary dismissal on merit
are likely to start flying soon!

As for "is linux unix", well, as the court case has shown, there's
UNIX(R) and no linux isn't, there's Unix as in "it contains AT&T code"
and no linux isn't, and unix as in folowing the unix philosophy which
linux definitely is.

And don't forget, most UNIX(R) is now GNU, seeing as most of them either
ship with GNU installed or administrators add it as almost their first
act of ownership :-)

Cheers,
Wol

I can only agree to placing option 7 where it is, I would seriously look
at an X86 server running a couple of Xeon processors at 2.4Ghz or
quicker. If you have good Unix skills, take a long look at Linux, the
price is right and there haven't been too many complaints on the list
about the Universe product on Linux.
