Re: [Ubnt_users] Recommendation for Rainfade / Bonding

It depends on your network: bridged or routed.

If its bridged then you have to rely on STP. A number of STP examples
available for Mikrotik

deploying these.   No matter the driving factor, the majority of
these networks are here to make money.  I, for one, have bet my

different than betting on another vendor, but I chose UBNT for
several reasons.  Price was a factor but not the only one.

Robert and Staff, please don’t misunderstand the passion for

business.  Tools like AirControl means we can do that extra

A complete product family means we have a lower TCO.

Now, back to perception.  If I am putting my house on the

finished a key product like AC in how many years? Version 1
never was completed.  V2 is now dead.  What about the Mfi cloud?
I want to be able to trust a company with my livelihood. Sure, a
software product isn’t the same as a working AP, but it should
be a key component.  In today’s ISP world information is King.
If I have information I know when to upgrade, what customers to
proactively fix, and how the overall health of the network is.
This is what makes me different than Comcast.  I should be able
to know everything about what I have.

If you want to make it cloud based, how about an appliance we
can install locally? Just an idea, in a sea of thousands.   But
more importantly, help us focus on automating our businesses and
being kick butt at it. Give us the tools we actually need.  That
way we can buy more units from you.  Simple.

gigabit ports are nice and can move a lot of data.  A bit
more expensive than the mikrotik box at closer to $110, but
I prefer them so far.  Can also put POE out on all ports,

[Ubnt_users] Backup radio

2016-09-23 Thread Roy
We are putting a plan together for an AirFiber 24 link to our main tower
and will use the existing AirFiber 5X as a backup link.

The question is the use of STP as a mechanism to switch between the main
and backup links. The switches at each end are Netonix. Is STP on the
Netonix usable for this or do I need to find an alternative?

[Ubnt_users] Rocket recommendation?

We will be putting up a new tower to split the current customer base.
My thinking right now is two 90 degree sectors. The other 180 degrees
is hillside so no need to radiate in that direction

The clients are all Nanobridge/Powerbeams non-AC radios but we want to
add AC into the mix. The environment is 5Ghz with lots of other radios
out there.

Looking at the bewildering array of Rocket radios, I am looking for some

Re: [Ubnt_users] Unifi mesh

2017-08-28 Thread Roy

The mesh units talk to each other on 5Ghz via 802.11ac.   Assuming
one unit attaches to your fiber and the other two are remote, you
will be sending the remotes over a single 5 Ghz channel.

If you assume that each AP gets 1/3 the load, you will have a
single 5Ghz channel trying to support 66 clients at 5Mbps each.

What would be worse is allowing the clients to connect via 5Ghz
and really screw up the channel.

[Ubnt_users] 6.07 upgrade problem

2017-10-10 Thread Roy
Hi,

I have an XM 6.0.1 station connected to an XM 6.0.1 AP

I upgraded the station to 6.07 and now they won't talk to each other.
No errors in either log

Any ideas?

I guess I will try going back to the signed copy of 6.04

The AP radio is set for 5.700 Ghz with 40Mhz width.

The Station is a Nanobridge and the AP is a Nanostation.  Link
distance is probably 100 yards across some parking lots.   Power
  is -8dbm

The station radio does see the AP as expected.   One other station
running XM 6.0.1 is connected to the AP.

I haven't tried a power cycle but I have rebooted several times

The AP is definitely sending because it shows up in the site survey and
another station is connected to it.   Is there a way to check if the XM

There isn't any UNII button but since it worked on 5.7 Ghz before,
it should work now.   When I reboot the radio, it scans for the AP

The security key is unchanged.  If it was a key problem, wouldn't

Re: [Ubnt_users] XM 6.0.4 (unsigned) vs XM 6.04

2017-10-10 Thread Roy

The newer versions of software (6.0.6 or higher) will not load software
that is unsigned.  So if you go to 6.0.6 and then want to go back to
6.0.4, you need the signed version.  Once you go to 6.0.4, you can then
load unsigned versions go back further.

This "feature" is touted as protecting your radios.  The side effect is
preventing you from loading software such as open source.  Supposedly,
you can TFTP in any software you want (signed or unsigned).

I think I found the problem,

We rebooted the other radios and then the 6.0.7 version associated.
The 6.0.1 station associated a few seconds later. So it may be something
related to which version connects first.

Re: [Ubnt_users] Radios won't operate on the same channel

2017-11-30 Thread Roy

Quick note, the key to be used via SSH
does not have the "-" in it.  so - becomes

  --

  Now my results:

I got a new radio out of storage  (oldie with 5.5.6) and installed
6.0.4 and it didn't permit 5585 to 5655 Mhz.  The other DFS
  channels seem to be there

I tested with the dfs-unlock command via SSH using a bad key.  The
  result was
  FCC DFS frequencies are enabled.
FCC DFS NEW GRANT is disabled.

I then did an dfs-unlock and got
  FCC DFS frequencies are enabled.
FCC DFS NEW GRANT is disabled.
Enabling FCC DFS frequencies...
Saving ... [%100]

The 5585 to 5655 gap was still not allowed

I regressed the box to 5.6.9 and hit the "Activate" button.  After
completing the activation, I ran the test again and got
  FCC DFS frequencies are enabled.
FCC DFS NEW GRANT is enabled.

Now the 5585 to 5655 Mhz. range is in the list.  Went forward to
6.0.4 and my test now shows both are still enabled.

Bottom line:  V6 doesn't have an activate button because it
doesn't seem to do anything.  V6 gave the same frequencies before
and after dfs-unlock via SSH.  To get "FCC DFS NEW GRANT" you need
to install 5.6.9 and activate there.

I just checked a LBE-5AC-23 and it has the "revised U-NII
question.  Its activated and I think all those channels are
  selectable.  Software is  version 8.5.12

We use LiteBeam AC Gen 2 and LBE-5AC-23 successfully out to 3
miles. YMMV.  For .5 miles and less, we are starting to use
  Mikrotik 60Ghz

The original model needs the unlock code for the
UNII, the newer, Gen2, comes activated.  They work fine for
short shots 3/4 of mile or less: anything longer move to the
PowerBeams.  The LBE's work much better then the NBE's that have
a funky antenna pattern.

Re: [Ubnt_users] Ubiquiti LBE-5AC

2019-07-29 Thread Roy
So far so good.  Its limited to four users right now but those links are
working great.  Love the AP with the 180 degree antenna coverage and
beam steering.

Its definitely LOS but we have one link running between two building
across a parking lot with the radios looking through windows.  Longest
link is about 1200 feet.

There are similar problems with the AirMax M.  I had to downgrade to
5.6.9 then unlock the radio and go back to 6.x.x.
