The latest? I understand the reasoning behind that approach. It is commonly done on Mikrotik routers. In my experience, this approach also gets very messy with different interfaces and fields on forms located in different places caused by different versions. And monitoring tools often expect certain versions. I understand the logic of "don't fix it if it is not broken" but the alternative has its drawbacks too (cyber risks, no bug fixes, incompatible versions, varied user interfaces, monitoring tool issues, etc.). I prefer all devices at a uniform version so I know issues are not caused by version differences and everything works/looks the same. Sadly Ubiquiti has made us afraid to upgrade because of the risk of added problems and truck rolls, although I did have very good luck with version 5.x. I think I still prefer upgrading with some regularity, but cautiously. :) Is version 6.1.2 something good or is it more bugs? Re: [Ubnt_users] 2.4 throughput. gotta love being a wisp
Jay, At the range your charts shows, 2.4 works but 5 is better for your 10 meg speeds. I have a mix and have been splitting my 2.4 sectors and adding 5 gbs sectors for heavy users as I was seeing the 2.4 sectors struggle with the increased number of clients as I increased plans for faster speed! My issue is 5 Ghz does not travel through trees like the 2.4 gbs does for me, so I work to balance those towers with more choices for installers, but I am connecting up to 6 miles in my area for many. I would also try turning Airmax off. In my area it doesn't always help and actually slows the clients down, which may be the issue. Also, check power settings on radios around the customers complaining or certain towers as the local interference from those radios may be impacting you. I have some down to 6 power if they are 1/2 mile of less with clean line of sight to tower. Works fine and reduces interference I generate. Good Luck! Re: [Ubnt_users] 6.0 issues
Steve, I had similar issue on M5 XW Rocket. Station side of Backhaul would stop sending data but would stay connected to AP. I could access both remotely. Once I rebooted remotely through the radio access or Air Control, the Station side the tower connected and clients had service. I tried all firmwares, 5.6.9, 6.0 and nothing worked. I was on 5.6.4 when the issues started. I never used Ping Watchdog previously, but set it up on the Station side causing me issues to ping backwards on the tower to one sector behind the Backhaul Station causing issues. Once I did that the tower never dropped again and it was dropping every hour. I then planned the trip a few days later and replaced the radio completely with new M5. Working great now with no Ping watchdog set up on new radio. Troy > Jerry are you finding going back to 5.6.9 can stabilize this issue. We > have Rocket M5(XM) that are doing the same thing. Re: [Ubnt_users] Backhaul Radios freeze on Station side
Follow up to my original post. I upgraded the backhaul station side only to XW 5.6.9 from XW 5.6.4 That seemed to have fixed the issue for a few weeks, then it started back up recently but was now occurring 6 times daily or more. So it was mad!! Even a 6.0 beta version did not help. I have not used ping watchdog previously, but I tried it on this radio. The station side of the backhaul was my issue, so I logged in and setup ping watchdog to ping a sector behind the station. The issue was the station would not transfer data to tower, but stayed connected to the AP. I could access both sides of the backhaul as a simple reboot of the station reconnected everything again. I tried to kick from AP, but that did not work, so I always had to reboot it through Air Control or logged into it remotely. Once I applied the ping watchdog to the tower backhaul it stabilized. I only did this on the station side to ping back to a tower sector. The AP I left alone. Not one more issue. That bought me the time till I could climb and replace the radio the next day as weather was terrible...of course! Now that I've replaced the radio no more issues. I did notice lots of down alerts from my switch, TS-8, from the old radio, but only for a few seconds and nothing that brought the tower down or to cause a full reboot. I wanted to share as I have no idea why, but hope it helps somebody else. David, I just had it happen again twice in a 4 hour period tonight for one tower that I reported originally on the 8th of November, Tower 1: M5 5.6.4 XW to M5 5.6.4 XW, channel is 34 and airmax is 97% quality and 94% capacity, noise floor -101dBm and ccq is 99%. I am on 30 mhz width and getting 216.666mbs/216.666mbs. The weather has turned cold, but never had that problem through other winters. A simple reboot remotely of the Station side of the backhaul reconnects everything perfectly. This had not happened for 2 weeks, then twice in one evening on the same tower. I have not tried to upgrade firmware from the XW 5.6.4 as I too have checked forums and come up with the same responsesNo answer to why or how to fix it and the firmware updates did not change it either from what I read. I have had best luck with XW 5.6.4 to date, so was trying to stay that direction until I tested or heard otherwise. Troy > Long read, but wanted get out what we have found. Re: [Ubnt_users] M5 Rocket XM to XW issue
I just upgraded the AP to 5.6.9 and signals did not change. Very odd that CPE'S were good before AP radio change. I am wondering if cable, jumpers, or radio is bad as I put up a RF elements horn to test on an area of this tower with 10 feet separation as well as different channels. It has a XW M5 rocket and I was able to transfer a CPE with a signal of 83 from the omni to a signal of 60 on the horn. Previously that same CPE radio on old AP radio for the omni had this 60 signal range. It dropped on the new XW radio. Everything looked good at time of replacement on the omni, but something changed! It seems to have happened on both xw and xm radios. We use pppoe as a form of authentication in the cpe and the client radio will stay connected to the ap but they stop passing traffic and drop their pppoe connection. I still haven't found a real good solution, but luckily its 2 small sites and i threw ping watchdog on the rocket ap to a client pppoe ip address and made that customer aware of it so they don't unplug during a storm for example. Not a great solution but its definitely better than hopping on every time to reboot the ap. - Original Message - Subject: [Ubnt_users] M5 Rocket XM to XW issue From: t...@byhalia.net Date: 9/26/16 8:36 am To: ubnt_users@wispa.org I have a M5 rocket on a AMO-5G13 omni that was running XM 5.6.4 and was running great. It just started to disconnect randomly and need a hard reboot to reconnect the client radios (Powerbeam-M5-400). A simple power cycle was all that was needed to get fully operational again. Happened twice this month, so I thought it needed updated. Since it was an older M5 I replaced it this weekend with a new M5, XW version 5.6.4. Also, I read on a UBNT forum about running the new XW CPE's on XW AP's as they worked better, but that is not what I am seeing. So now the AP and all the CPE's (Powerbeam-M5-400) are on the XW version 5.64 and I am seeing terrible signals only on my CPE's that are near the tower. The CPE's farther away are fine, but anything less than a mile is showing signals in the 80's and previously they were in the low 60's to 50's. Some CPE's have perfect line of sight too. Not sure what is causing it and hope somebody knows. At this point I'm ready to deal with the reboots and put the old XM radio back up! Hope somebody has a fix and I was thinking of firmware, but scared to change too much until I troubleshoot more as I read horror stories on all the firmware changes. [Ubnt_users] Outdoor DC Wire Options
I am looking for recommendations for types of DC wire to run a Netonix DC switch. I was looking at outdoor stranded 12 gauge as the distance is 200 feet from 48 Volt 5 Amp 240 Watt DC power pack to the Netonix WS-12-250-DC switch on the tower. The wire will be ran in a conduit except for the top 10 feet which will be exposed to the elements. Some conduit is underground, so I am sure it is not 100% dry either. Home Improvement stores had single wire spools or landscape light wire as options I could find. Would 12 gauge landscape wire work? Appreciate the support! Re: [Ubnt_users] kudos to ubnt - rma
I agree with Shawn. Never a problem on RMAs. Very responsive!! Agree too on getting rid of packing peanuts!! I'm a one man show and don't have hours of free time to satisfy them. For stuff under $70 it's not worth my time to spend additional hours jumping through hoops after already spending money on truck rolls. We attempted to install one but it had the "flash memory failure" the day we got it out of the box. Attempted to RMA it - the date code was so old they denied the RMA. So I looked up our amazon receipt, resubmitted the RMA (again - purchased from Amazon in like May) - and attached the invoice with the RMA submission. UBNT approved the RMA.
