Re: [ubuntu-art] New Wave graphical guidelines

2008-05-23 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hi,

In this regard, about consistency of the theme, I have made some
proposal of consistency between metacity-frame-menubar and application
 active in taskbar.

 http://img267.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nw1uu0.png

 http://img60.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nw2gc9.png

Very good !

Further, I think that the active item of the menu must be a bit more
 clear.

 http://img367.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nw3ef0.png

I agree, but please use orange rather than pink.

Regards,
Étienne.

Re: [ubuntu-art] New Wave graphical guidelines

2008-05-22 Thread Étienne Bersac
Salut François,

The document is very good, but looks more like an exposé than a set of
guidelines. For example, the choice of colour is hardcoded in
guidelines. You should provide a complete palette, but let us choose the
color during the design process. For example, i find the orange of
highlighted item too bright so that it's not easy to read the text.

Keep up the good work, we definitely needs direction :)

Étienne.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Dream Wallpaper

2008-05-21 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hi,

did you read some wallpaper guideline ? (like e.g. Tango, but Ubuntu
might have its own). Your wallpapers are nice, but do they fit the
background job ? The white is too bright imho. The lines are too sharp.
You should add more smooth and blur in order to get something more
useful when you work with your computer. Current version would provide a
nice screensaver ;)

Hi,

Could you make the selected item gradient less pinkish and more
orange/yellow ?

Anyway, good work on the color. That's truly a good idea since black
over white is more readable for most people. However, i guess we can't
merge menubar and menu color due to the shadow.

Hi,

A quick note about engine limitation. Don't forget we'll have 2 years to
get this theme perfect, for the next LTS. Until that, you can get
compromise to get things for the other short term support releases. But
don't hesitate to push ideas upstream in engine, even if that's not
included yet for the next STS. :)

I actually would like to see a theme growing during two years long in
order to get a *very* professionnal theme for Ubuntu. If Ubuntu pushes
things upword to extends engines capabilities, this just mean that
Ubuntu is the leading distro, as it should be :)

Just at tips : the desktop wallpaper has a very nice sharpness in middle

smooth. You may add some kind of similar sharpness. Not the same.

Do you plan to add a face browser enable version ? I can do that for you

Keep up the good work. Feisty will be so Dapper !

Hi Mark,

I don't want agressive. The red hat example is far too annoying for my
taste. And may be very disturbing. (Especially in development release, i
sometimes let updates awaiting).

The two points are :

  * Icon is not consistent with panel icon. I just had an idea : a
package with the new label like in new directory. Or the
same picto as in Add/Remove software + the new label. This
will make sense and will be coherent with both panel icons and
wide theme.
  * Icon does not clearly mean update available. See : the
prefered app capplet icon refer to boxed cdrom software even if
about 99, percent of softwares in the system are downloaded.
The same way, the update icon should rely on a known relation
between reality and concept. The idea i suggest above is quite
good, altough, Ken might have better idea (or yourself !)

Thanks Master :)

[ubuntu-art] Incoming Feisty art

2007-02-10 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hi all,

Some of you may saw the new feisty artwork arriving. This artwork is not
stamped alpha. So, let's discuss about it :).

As of today, only usplash and gnome wallpaper has been updated.

First, i really like the new wallpaper. Even if i find it too pinky, i
really love the smoothness of the picture. In contrary to dapper
wallpaper, this one does not looks like a brown ulgy clone of Mac OS X
wallpaper suite. So sweet :).

About upslash. I do not like the new logo. the red is too pinky :|. And
since i do not like Gtk Human progress bar, i don't like it on usplash.
To be constructive, here are the point i dislike in this progressbar :

  * the tiny vertical seperators makes sense only for discret
progress bar (with fixed step). It provide an idea of unit of
progression and user wait the progress bar to push by one
square.
  * The sharp orange does fit neither title brown nor wallpaper
pink. Think consistent.
  * Also progress bar orange have huge accessibility issues (see bug
about that). Since december, i lost my glasses i have to wait
'til march. It's a good test of accessibility in Ubuntu. Beryl
helps. font-properties allows me to increase dpi up to 118 !
Even at such size, the text is hard to read on progress bar.
Please update. Accessibility matters.

Also, who made this artwork ? Is ubuntu-art only a place to comment new
artwork ;) ? It feel like we forgot to plan community themes :|

2006-11-28 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hi,

Your work on linux desktop is incredible. Thank you. Keep up the good

I guess that before nice effect for face browser, the most important is
transition effect between boot - login - session - logout - shut
down.

Seeing Vista and OS X, Vista has nice face browser, but OS X has far far
better transition. Screen flickering and other visual noise are far more
ugly than typing username. I would largely prefer a system with nice
transition and consistency than a system with eye candy effects for
basic feature.

Also, beware of makeing funky effects instead of professionnal effects.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Reversion to Dapper Artwork

2006-10-12 Thread Étienne Bersac
Welcome to the last-minute-rush we all enjoy since Dapper.

For now, we must polish the dapper artwork for edgy.

I suggest to add consistency to all that piece of artwork. The new
usplash theme just added more inconsistency.

That would be nice if we provide the **same** branding logo for usplash,
gdm and gnome splash. According to sabdfl, gdm branding makes people
happy (since hoary). We should use a similar version that fit 256 colors
and use it for usplash and gnome splash.

What about having real human gtk color in the usplash progressbar !?

Re: [ubuntu-art] My opinion about Edgy artwork

2006-10-10 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hi,

Red captions on GDM with errors like wrong username or password look
very ugly. They don't look well and they're hardly visible.

This bug is already reported.

The worst change is new usplash.
Linux users are used to watching useful informations about starting
services. Now, I don't know where my computer crashed (which on Edgy's
 live-cd happens very often).

Errors are shown.

The picture looks bad. Simply, previous was better. Now, there is even
 no distribution name.

Would be nice to have same branding for usplash and gdm. Is it possible
in 256 colors ?

Now, some psychology information. If nothing on screen moves, there is
illusion - user thinks that some process takes more time.

Agree, some of us are working on an animated logo. (You may find
something interesting in the wiki).

Hi,

Oh great, why didn't you use SVG? There is no open-source version of
Xara for Windows, and I usually do all my graphics design on Windows!
 Whoops...

???

Have you heard about GNU/Linux ? Ubuntu is one of the most popular
distro. You can easily install Inkscape, a powerful and versatile vector
image editor. _

We should just improve troy_s wallpaper.

So obviously, this wallpaper is done by the world famous troy_s (aka
Troy Sobotka). Am i troy_s ? Sorry, but i neither have svg nor xcf
original. Also, troy_s background is obviously a pixmaps, not a vector
graphic. So don't ask me why i didn't use SVG ! _

Cheers !

Re: [ubuntu-art] Progress update on the community process

2006-08-13 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hello,

I don't think I can use the same rounding for the progress bars.

Ok, you're right. I distinct two kind of rounding :

  * One for scrollbars and sliders
  * One for buttons, combo and progressbar

Obviously, progressbar has a very small radius. That would be nice to
have a radius similar to buttons. That would distinct it from OS X.

I wanted to keep the window frame a little brownish in order to have
more contrast for the title. Orange didn't have as good a contrast.
But yeah, I'll try this out more thoroughly.

Did you test the contrast of progress bar ? Can use the same gradient
for metacity title and progress bar ? Same gradient may give an overall
consistency even with slightly different colours.

Also, have you tryed using only brown ? a brown like the current
metacity title (caramel) or like the brown you use for your metacity
title ?

Thanks.

PS: sorry troy for all that polish discussion. :)

Hello,

Things are getting better. I still think that :

  * You should harmonize rounding. Can you use the same rounding for
scrollbars, sliders, progressbars, spinners, buttons (including
toolbar buttons) and combos ?
  * Metacity theme and Gtk+ theme seems to use different palette.
One is brown, the other is orange. Can you use same color for
metacity title ?
  * And still that gray. Can you just enlight it a bit.

However, that's really better than the current all grey Gtk theme.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Progress update on the community process

2006-08-10 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hello,

I agree with Who. The overall look'n'feel is quite better than the
current Human. However, less rounded widgets should do a better
distinctive design. That would make GtkSpinButton nicer.

I really like the progressbar, there are far more readable. Droping tiny
vertical lines is a very good idea :D.

Also, i find that the darken bottom of window title bar is too dark, as
well as the close button background.

About scrollbar. Using color for both scroll and buttons might look
good. But remember that orange is quite sharp. Mark said that long term
widget should not be in sharp color, nor glassy.

Also, a big big big point. Can you use less gray and more white or a
sligthly oranged white ? I'm sure that a lot of people are fed up with
gray. Using a widget background color other than gray would definetly
make ubuntu looks distinctive.

Keep up the good work !! :D

tango colors where ubuntu-* use ubuntu palette.

Hello,

Today i did a lot of deep changes in our Wiki. I added a lot of pages
and redirect old pages the new one.

There are some problematic pages :

  * ArtworkTeam/Meetings and ArtworkTeam/Meetings/Agenda have a big
semantic problem. Agenda must be the list of upcoming meetings
and events. Agenda must be a kind of calendar. Not a mailing
list digest. I don't know what to do with that pages (else than
just droping them). Meetings are globaly well handled. No need
to do our own archive, and so on.
  * Artwork/Documentation/Howtos/InlineColorSwatch and

I don't know how to handle that pages. Should them be specs ???

Any help to build Review of previews artwork is wellcome. Use qemu and

In Artwork/ namespace, if you visit a page that do not have the artwork

 1. edit it

 3. add template=Artwork/PageTemplate to the url

 5. and paste the content in place of the default content
 6. then save changes.

[ubuntu-art] Re: SFX in future Ubuntu releases

2006-06-13 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hello,

It seems that some people here need a review of desktop technologies.

Next gen linux desktop will be composed. Two solution stands :

  * Using the Composite extension of Xorg. This solution comes from
Fedora and is supported by nVidia. This solution know a
conceptual security hole.
  * Using a brand new Xserver built on top of OpenGL. Called Xgl.
This xserver has two variant : Xglx which run on top of Xorg
OpenGL implementation and Xegl which run on top of Egl, a bunch
of software that use framebuffer, glitz and a bunch of other
good techno. This solution does not suffer such conceptual
security hole like current X11 because Xserver does not have
full root access to card registry.

I guess that Xgl is to X11 what Hurd is to other systems.

On top of that xservers (starting with Xorg 7.1), we can run metacity
composite_manager or compiz. Compiz is by far the most featured
composite manager, but is quite unstable and under development.

A Google Summer of Code project mentored by Ubuntu consists of Poorman
Xgl i.e. Xgl over software rendering.

So Ubuntu might explore Xgl, but we can't drop Xorg. Our solutions are :

  * Xorg + metacity
  * Xorg + compiz
  * Xorg + Xgl + compiz

For now we can't know what techno will be used. I may have done
mistakes.

Hello,

I don't condamn proprietary software users. But that's just as shame
when people see Ubuntu coming with great professionnal art software
such as Gimp and Inkscape, but artwork wasn't done with that tools. Does
the pope preach for islam ?

Can you share you files between Illustrator and Inkscape or between
Photoshop and Gimp ? I guess not without loss, using transitionnal
format that wont allow a rocking collaborative work or using import
plugin that don't support such or such functionnality. Consider the
problem of format openness.

Please don't consider Free Software as lesser software. A bunch of
artists use that software to do rocking art. That's often a matter of
habits.

However, I'm not one of those guys who wants to enforce people to use
free software. Just use open format readable and writable with free
software included in Ubuntu. I'm not able to buy proprietary software
license such as Photoshop nor Illustrator !

[ubuntu-art] Our wiki organisation

2006-06-09 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hello,

Before Edgy cycle, we have the time and the ability to deeply rework our
wiki architecture, including breaking Google cache, however we should
avoid that.

I suggest :

  * Gather Artwork and ArtworkTeam into Artwork.
  * Rename ArtworkTeam/People to Artwork/Team.
  * Move Meetings to Artwork/Team.
  * Gather Meetings résumé in Artwork/Team/Meetings/
  * Move Agenda in Artwork/Team/Meetings.
  * Create a GetInvolved page, maybe in Artwork/Team/ or just put it
on Artwork !
  * Create WartyWartHog, HoaryHedgeHog, BreezyBadger, DapperDrake
and EdgyEft that contain reviews for released version and drafts
for current developpement version.
  * Move Documentation on top of Artwork/
  * Drop non Artwork Howtos, e.g. IRC Howto must be a standalone
page : IRCHowto or XChatHowto or GaimHowto.
  * Create Artwork/Drafts for temporary document that should move to
Documentation or other
  * Create Artwork/Propositions
  * Create Artwork/Evaluations for us to compare Propositions. That
might be Artwork/Team only.
  * Make a beautiful template. ArtworkTeam/PageTemplate is quite
good.

How should we handle Drafts, Evaluations, Propositions and Reviews ? Is
that all the same ? AFAIK :

  * Drafts are temporary
  * Evaluations should remains because there might be useful later.
The same apply to Propositions
  * Reviews must remains

We must actually define what we work on. We need a page or a bunch of
pages that define each part of Ubuntu artwork and document the way we
have to work with it. e.g. a page for BootSplash theme pointing to a
documentation for USplash theming. I start writing a kind of definition
of our work in WideTheme.

We must define what we want to expose at our main Artwork page. I
suggest :

  * Ubuntu Artwork Goals.
  * Who address those goals
  * Getting Involved. Artwork Wiki Guidelines
  * Various Links : other ArtworkTeam, Official artwork, Licensing
etc.

I can do a lot of this work, but i don't want do to it without your
agree. So please just say : ok or ok but this and that, etc.

are not selected by artwork team. According to dholbach dropping those
theme must be done in accordance with everybody else. Don't exactly
understand that.

That would be nice if artwork team have a real control of artwork shiped
by ubuntu. currently ubuntu ship some theme such as Simple, Smockey-Blue
and Grand Canyon, Ocean Dream, Glider, Crux, Mist Clearlooks, and
Traditionnal should be drop in favour of artwork selected themes : Gray,
Dapper-Drake, etc.

Why are so much theme included in Ubuntu ? Who select them ? Which power
will we give to ubuntu-artwork team ?

Thanks.

Hello,

If you want to drop some themes don't forget the upgrade path, some
people are probably using those so they should stay available on upgrade

If we drop gnome-theme dependance of ubuntu-desktop, would gnome-theme

Hello,

I think that the best solution should be to have one team on launchpad.
Just about the name, i prefer ubuntu-artwork to ubuntu-art (like
edubuntu-artwork which seems quite well organized).

I wish that we could merge ubuntu-art into ubuntu-artwork. Obviously,
ubuntu-artwork wasn't created with enough discussion. However, it allow
all of us to continue the reborn of the artwork team.

2006-05-24 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hello,

One week ago, the Art Team on launchpad was empty.

About me, i'm wish to get involved in ubuntu artwork. I'm not a real
artist, even if i can give some peace of artwork if needed (see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Usplash/DapperPropositions ). But i really need
clear guidelines to make a useful artwork.

I also report some bug about artwork inconsistency. For me consistency
is very important in artwork. I can signal inconsistency and propose
alternative.

And some more that i don't know.

The problem about artwork in ubuntu is that artwork seems to be a matter
of an obscur invisible team in Canonical office. But in fact, that
invisible team is just the non existant art team of ubuntu, because
people didn't know that art team seek for members.

So obviously, we need homepage, guidelines, meetings, leaders and so on.

Yes, i don't understand why some people wants final arwork (which is

Re: [ubuntu-art] Re: ubuntu-art Digest, Vol 11, Issue 46

2006-05-17 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hello,

There is only one version which counts, which is the 600x400 (or
whatever) FINAL IMAGE that gets baked into the .so file. The value of
having a (for example) 1024x768 version is to see what it will
ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE when the framebuffer expands it to fill the screen.
That expansion is dumb (there's no smoothing going on) so the
example large-format version should be scaled up with a dumb scaling
algorithm so it gives a realistic view.

I understand your wish to test in the worse case, but really, people are
able to choose their resolution with gfxboot, powerpc automatically
choose the right resolution, CRT screen doubles neither row nor column,
LCD have smooth scaling for years.

However, i build 1024x768 picture with same colors using convert. I
published them as *.1024x768.png at
http://bersace03.free.fr/pub/ubuntu/dapper/usplash/ .

I use my updated Makefile i attached to build all these 8 picture
easily. Put you source pngs in [EMAIL PROTECTED] in the PNGS variable. Then Type
make 1024x768 and it will build .1024x768.png pictures. type make
640x400 and the same appear for 640x400. make thumbs generate thumbs
from 640x400 resized to 320x240. make build .so for each PNGS. make
install to copy them to /usr/local/lib/usplash and add alternative for
these. No uninstall target yet :).

Wish that helps.

Re: [ubuntu-art] usplash contributions

2006-05-16 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hello,

 1) Obtain an optimum 16 color palette via careful scrunching.
 2) Import the palette via Gimp's palette tool.
 3) Scuttle the palette entries around in accordance with
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/USplashCustomizationHowto?highlight=%28usplash%
 29
 4) Re-work the working image down to a 16 color palette based on the
final palette (Mode shift option in Gimp).
 5) Try to run 'pngtobogl usplash-artwork.png usplash-artwork.c'
 6) usplash-artwork.c results in an error with too many colors in the
 file.

Okey, compare with my workflow :

 1. Create a 640x480 picture with Gimp
 2. Export it to PNG. Convert it to 16 colors with Gimp (don't know
how to order colors in the palette with the Gimp). Be careful
about flat surface. manual retouch. etc.
 3. Resize it to 640x400 with convert (i wish it keep the palette,
but not sure)
 4. pngtobogl it
 5. build, link it, etc.

Step 3, 4 and 5 are handle by the Makefile. Installing it with sudo make
install. I got black screen.

I would like to see Frank Schoep workflow for his minimalistic, or any
other working workflow.

Étienne.

Re: [ubuntu-art] usplash contributions

2006-05-16 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hello,

Here is how I do it...the first part probably makes no sense, but I
am used to doing it that way :-)

 1) Create a basic 640x480 pic with the correct branding, etc. as vector.
 2) scale that down to 640x400
 3) add extra highlights, glow and shadows as appropriate
 4) save a pic as 24bit png
 5) change to indexed color (no dithering), 15 colors if you need to
add a white or red for text purposes...save the file
 6) open the colormap dialogue and swap colors where necessary to make
it fit to the code...note that your pic starts looking funky really
quick - save that with another name
 7) open the pic without the adjusted colormap from step 5, select
all, copy, and paste into the one from step 6 - gimp adjust the index
 stuff automagically
 8) touch it up per hand as necessary (didn't go this far yet on the
pics I posted on the wiki)

pngtobogl it, and build, link, etc.

I followed youre step to manually implement Gimp palette drag'n'drop ;)
[attached], That may have set up the right palette, but that didn't make
my splash viewable ! I wonder why do is see nothing at the screen.

I would suggest staying away from command line tools to edit these
pics because of the small size, aspect ratio/scaling issues and the
 limited number of colors.

Maybe. I find that funny to search the best way to automatis that stuff.
Especially thumbnailing, building and installing.

I may will try to implement a way to modify the palette in the .c, as it
is far easier.
