Here's what I think:
The brown that there looks too dull, and thus it looks like a polished mud
or clay (not fire hardened) trash bin. I think that the bin should be orange
like the originals myself, though thats just my opinion.

Ok. I have added the trash icons to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/BreatheIconSet/Icons. All future
revisions (to these images. We might have a better trash idea later)
*must* be derived from these SVGs. I have changed some things to make
them in line technically with the rest of the icons.

spg76 - If you like, you can continue to show your revisions on the
submissions page like you have been. Just grab the new SVGs from the
/Icons page 1st.

Danny, for the paper, I edited an bitmap in Gimp and then converted to
vector in Inkscape.

2008-10-01 Thread Danny King
I really like the new grey colour and the paper is really good. Can I
ask how you made the paper?

A few things that I'm not sure about:

I think the white streaks are too vivid, perhaps try making them more
subtle and seeing how that looks? (maybe it'll be worse, just
speculating).

The left and right edges are slightly jagged, maybe either add a very
subtle blurred object behind them?

The top 'lip' of the bin doesn't have a shadow and I think it would
(although, also subtle)

I think the inside of the empty bin is very dark. If the light is
coming from above it would probably look very similar to the outside?

The paper looks a little too white to me.

The recycle icon might look better if it appeared to be etched in to
the plastic?

The black base at the very bottom of the bin doesn't look like it's
the same material as the rest of the bin - maybe it's too dark.

I realize this sounds like a very negative response so let me say that
I think your icons are wonderful as they are and I find them very
inspirational, I'm just trying to make them perfect. If anyone
disagrees with any of my suggestions I welcome debate!

The ball is a nice touch and well done, but maybe a bit distracting. I
think it will not work at all for smaller sizes. Like 22 px as used on

You should make sure that major lines/features are lined up with the
pixel grid on all sizes. You can hit # to toggle the grid in Inkscape.
If you zoom in, you should be able to see the default 1px spacing. Now
say you have a dark horizontal line in your icon. If it ends up on
non-integer coordinates and thus somewhere halfway between one row of
pixels and the next in the exported image, the line will appear blurry.
So you should try to move things to get them on the grid where ever
possible.

For small icons, it can be of advantage to completely redraw them, as
there will be less detail. It can also help to drop the perspective to
go entirely flat. At least for 16 px size, where you easily end up with
pixel-salad :)

Nice work, I really like your full trash icon. You have to be careful
with heavily blurred objects in Inkscape because the blurring actually
won't be exported unless the entire lot is within the exportable
region, and sometimes it's hard to tell if it is (the blur is larger
than the shape that you apply it to).

I suggest making the shadow smaller and more subtle. Use a little as
you can get away with and build up from there (I think it would look
more realistic?)

Great work, keep it coming!

I'm leaning toward the gray one atm. Should we lighten it up a little? I
think the recycle arrows should be more noticeable. Also the smaller
ones need to be drawn for their target size not just scaled down from
the bigger ones.

How about we axe the color ones and see a gray one with the trash full?

As far as your shadow goes it just looks like it does outside of the

I like the orange. The other colors aren't very subtle. I would recommend,
actually, dark green, white, or even gray if we're going for realism here.

Great work there Sebastian, I really like your use of shadow and the
perspective is really good. I think the blue bin is the best - I
really want to reach out and touch it, which is the design goal. You
can tell that a lot of work has gone into it :)

The darker, lower half of the red and yellow bins seem too dark - on
the other two it looks perfect. Also perhaps the recycling logo could
be lighter? It appears to me to be slightly pink, maybe it's my eyes.
The shadow underneath all of the bins is clipped so they need to be
made a little smaller

I do like the wonderful colours you've used, but I still (personally)
feel that I can't relate any of them to a real world material. They
look like matte plastic (which I really like) but I don't think I've
ever seen such a bright matte plastic bin!

Also, just thinking about the 'full' trash can icon, assuming we used
the tried and tested 'scrunched up paper', I don't think there would
be enough space at the top to fit in the paper, so that's a +1 in
favour of resizing a little (at least the 256 size) from my point of
view.

All in all, a fantastic icon! I think with a few tweaks this might be
a good one to base the rest of the theme on - what do people think?
Should we start using matte plastic where applicable on other icons
for consistency?

All of this is just my first opinion and very much up for debate!
