Re: [ubuntu-art] Update-notifier icon
Very nice! I like that idea, but thought perhaps you could try implementing that into the sparkle ones. I agree that the icons should be similar, but show a difference. However the up arrow looks a little too much like a house to me. Makes me think of the "home" folder. Well, just some ideas. Thanks for clearing that up :-) Once we have decided upon the exact metaphors I think the only thing left to do is to make sure that it is "humanized" (ie it matches the style of the Human icons). I checked the naimng specs, it contemplate software-update-available and software-update-urgent: software-update-available: The icon used when an update is available for software installed on the computing device, through the system software update program. software-update-urgent: The icon used when an urgent update is available through the system software update program. It could be usefull to have update-mager to notify in a different way a critical update from an optional one, in that case the bold up-arrow/exclamation-mark icon could be used for software-update-urgent and another subtler icon for software-update-available. Nice! Just one idea, not sure if it would work or not, but here goes: put it on top of a small app window, to signify that we are updating software - not sure if this would not be too crowded or not but it might be worth a try. The red star says "crash" very well to me. I think it would be nice for the apport icon although that might be overdoing the exclamation point usage in the panel. Are there SVGs available? I can tell you after having used Ubuntu since Warty, that I still have no clue. _If_ our audience were Joe and Josephine Average, with exposure to only the mainstream operating systems, we can probably argue: 1) 22 pixel icons simply do not suffice on a communication level alone. I would be willing to suggest that subject to a focus group, there is _no_ 22 pixel icon that would precisely and clearly communicate anything more than 'something to do with a pencil and paper' or like vaguetries. 2) "Universal" is yet another path of folly. Urgent is always, once again, dependent on your audience. My six year old probably considers a blinking icon of something that looks like a 'dog' urgent. To negotiate the current dilemma of our design lacking a decisive target audience, and in the name of consistency, it is probably worth applying ourselves within the language Ubuntu already tries to establish. * Utilize the iconography present across the various dialog displays. After a term of user interaction, the user will have been exposed to one or more of these (albeit not possibly as consistently as is ideal), and could possibly make the connection. Hi, just wanted to add that i think the Tango icon would, or does (http://tango.freedesktop.org/static/cvs/tango-icon-theme/16x16/apps/system-software-update.png) not work on a small size. I also think the metaphor of the Tango icon is not optimal. I like the "recycle-arrows", but i am afraid that some people could misinterprete the "internet-metaphor" (globe to a cable) with something concerning their internet connection. Something like "you are online" or some internet-settings things.. I have to say that i am used to the small orange "a new star is born"-icon (good metaphor (?)). Maybe a combination of the "recycle-arrows" and the clear visible layout of the current icon would be worth trying. bye, andi On Di, 2007-02-13 at 01:31 +0100, Kenneth Wimer wrote: > Hi Étienne, > > My suggestion to change the icon would be to "humanize" a tango icon: > > http://tango.freedesktop.org/static/cvs/tango-icon-theme/scalable/apps/system-software-update.svg > > It seems like a decent metaphor although I am not sure how well it would work > at 16x16. Re: [ubuntu-art] Update-notifier icon
That seems like it would be completely bad at 16x16 even as an svg, (It is a nice icon though, and I like it's use on the Update Program itself (That's where it's used now right?)) we do need something a tad more eye catching though... not enough to break scheme. but enough to tell the user occasionally HEY! Look at me! Without annoying the people who already get it. If we had the composite by default spec matched I'd say a minor pulse or ripple coming from the tray icon (not blam in your face but noticeable) after very source list update yielding upgrades, but in this case I would say possible what we have now, occasionally transitioning to red. You know what I mean? It would be a little more eye catching, and not really break scheme, though borderline. The actual implementation of this is up to you all, but I think it would be enough to satisfy everyone, simply. I agree that the icon needs to attract attention, but am not sure I agree that it needs to be a big red warning sign. I just updated my package list to see the icon again and it seemed to me to be very adequately serious - and when you mouse over it, it tells you what you need to see. In short, I myself don't think it needs to change, but I'm sure Ken and other artists will consider suggested updates. Re: [ubuntu-art] Update-notifier icon
The update-notifier icon looks like the restart button of MS Windows XP (You can it here http://www.ashkon.com/images/rebootex.gif) The only difference for me is the color (green for Windows, orange for Ubuntu) -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

2007/2/3, Étienne Bersac <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: Hi all, As i noticed during the dapper cycle, the update-notifier icon is wrong. It has one goal : tell the user to manually trigger update. I notice that neither my father nor my mother nor any other membres of my family understood that (that's almost all the clueless people i can observe). Even if i tell them several times the meaning of this icon. I have installed Ubuntu at a few other places and I can confirm you report. People don't click the icon. I'm not sure it is because they don't know that they have top do it, or it's just that they don't dare or bother... I'm not 100% about their motives. Cheers, Mikkel up2date icon from RH is far better : a glowing red circle with an exclamation mark. Also, there is something very confusing in this icon : it follows the label's convention i.e. flat orange background + white sketch. Notification icons are icons similar to menu icon. They must follow the same guideline ! Ubuntu has very very nice notification area icons, thanks to Gnome (see how ugly are Windows(r) Vista systray official icons !!!). So i found that this icons fail to warn the users (please tell be about your clueless users) and does not fit well in the panel. What are we going to do in order to fix that issue ? Please comment. They actually are 22x22, I just mis-labeled them because I'm so used to 24 px size. However I'm not sure whether these 22 pixels should include 1 px border around the actual icon (currently they don't). If no-one has any better ideas than using the same shape for "update" and "restart" (which I think is alright, since both icons represent the task quite well and people are used to them), I'm going to give the arrows some fine-tuning, and propose the icon for inclusion in Tangerine. Julian Hello Julian! Yes, it would be great to have these icons in Tangerine. It would be great to get rid of the current icon. I've made some small tweaks to the icon, like adding a box behind it, in order to make the connection between Add/Remove applications and the update-notifier more clear. I've also made the icon green to make it more positive, as red might be seen as "warning, dangerous stuff ahead!", when most of the time a system update is something good (like plunging a security hole in firefox and similar stuff). Here are a tar.gz with the changes: http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/tango/software-update-avaible.tar.gz If you are happy with these modifications, I'll push it into Tangerine as soon as possible. - Andreas -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

I think using double arrows for both is fine as long as the icons are quite different. Currently we have a red disc with white arrows on it for update and two purple arrows floating in space for restart. Having a related shape is good because user will associate these two events as part of the same process to an extent. The colour difference is a useful cue for most people and the difference in silhouette is useful for colour blind people. The red is quite edgy, saying 'Do the update now!' and the purple is more relaxed (and matches the one on the logout dialogue). I would suggest changing the restart one to green, but that might be just me. - Henrik -- http://www.ubuntu.com http://www.theopencd.org -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

j Mak wrote: I disagree with Henrik. I think the icon needs a gloss because all the other icons on the panel have some kind of gloss to them; so this feature would make it stylistically blend better with the rest. I also think they should have gloss, but that the arrows should be painted on top of the gloss like on a solid sign and not embedded inside like clear plastic. The main thing is that the arrows need to be clearer. I like these new ones. I agree that a shade of red between those two might be good, and also that it should be slightly smaller. Ideally you would shrink the circle by 2px, but leave the arrows as they are (bringing them slightly closer to the edge). - Henrik -- http://www.ubuntu.com http://www.theopencd.org -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

That's probably not a good idea, since it's a metaphor based on language (like the old "log" icon for the system log. We shouldn't do that, because such metaphors won't necessarily work in all languages. What icons do other popular desktop OS's use for updates?
