Home server
Hi all. I'm looking to replace my home server this year with something a little smaller, quieter and energy efficient. I'm currently using a repurposed HP desktop machine running Ubuntu Server configured simply for file sharing, file streaming (local network) and testing web assets via LAMP. I'm looking to move to a machine to continue the file sharing (ubuntu, Macs, windows xp, 7 8 machines) etc. but to also control the wired and WiFi access throughout the home. I'm also running Twonky at the moment for file streaming and would like to continue with this. Any pointers on where to start looking? I'm not after anything super powerful, just something that works. Thanks. Simon Ives -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

Ubiquity Crash During Install
** Apologies for dual posting, I forgot to amend the subject field in my initial post ** Hi all. I'm having a little difficulty with a freshish install of Natty. I'm attempting to install a fresh copy over two previous Ubuntu partitions - '/' and '/home'. When the installation progress reaches the Removing Packages stage Ubiquity crashes and throws up a message asking me to file a bug on Launchpad. The live CD seemingly works flawlessly. I've provided my Launchpad bug link below with the two logs requested but would appreciate any additional advice on resolving this issue. Ensure you have the Backup and Restore plugin enabled in Edit - Plugins - Backup and Restore - this should already be enabled by default in Ubuntu. 2. Re-install Evolution. This can be done using Synaptic Package Manager. 2a. In Synaptic, search for evolution 2b. Click on the checkbox to the left of the Package field select Mark for re-installation 2c. Select apply 3. After Evolution has been re-installed, use File-Backup Settings and File-Restore Settings (from within Evolution) to restore the backup you made earlier. Standard Document Formats
Hi all. I've been engaged in writing a number of funding submissions for Skilling Queenslanders for Work and Productivity Places Program funding over the past month or so and have been in discussion with Queensland's Department of Employment, Economic Development Innovation about their Funding Toolkits. These consist of MS Office documents in .doc and .xls formats that are heavily customised. None of the documents that I have had the oppurtunity to use have functioned correctly in Open Office and the saved documents from Open Office don't display correctly in MS Office meaning that having an MS Office licence and proprietry operating system are the only way to effectively complete the funding applications. Windows 7 and Ubuntu
Hi. My work notebook is a HP Pavilion dv7 that came with MS Windows Vista. The first thing I did when I got it home, of course, was to set-up Ubuntu to dual boot (there are a number of applications we use that require MS Windows to function - DEEWR's UES Smart Client for example - so I couldn't go for a straight Ubuntu install). Work have since received a heap of MS Windows 7 upgrade disks and all of our new notebooks, mine included, need to be upgraded. My question, therefore, is 'how do I upgrade to MS Windows 7 and then restore Grub so that I can continue to use my current Ubuntu installation?'. Network Scanning
Hi all. I've got a smallish issue that I hope someone here can help me sort out regarding scanning over the local network. I have a HP Deskjet F2280 All in One device attached via USB to my home server. I can print to this device without a hitch from both Linux and Windows machines on the LAN and other locations (I've tried printing via the 'net through a VPN). I can scan using this device if it's connected to an Ubuntu (or Windows) desktop, but I can't seem to get my server to access and share it properly. I've got all the correct Sane backends running on the server - when I run: # sane-find-scanner, the result is: # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. Once you # found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as # necessary. as it does when the device is connected to a machine running Ubuntu Desktop. However, when I run: # scanimage -L the result is: No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Re: Upgrading from 8.04 to 9.04
I agree, updating works wonderfully with Ubuntu. One of my notebooks has been running Ubuntu since 6.x, has been upgraded with every release, and now runs 9.04 fine. I've got a 2gb USB thumb drive that I use for updating. I have the latest stable image that I can boot from to test how things work 'out of the box' and subsequently scour the forums etc. for any fixes that I may need. On the same USB thumb drive I keep the latest alternate image to upgrade from. The USB thumb drive is good for fixing/upgrading unresponsive systems too. If you don't want to upgrade via the net (bandwidth or account metering concerns etc.) then download the alternate image. You then mount the image and follow the on-screen upgrade instructions. To mount the image execute (with the correct path): sudo mount -o loop ubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386.iso /media/cdrom0 if the upgrade screen isn't then displayed execute: gksu sh /cdrom0/cdromupgrade I've never upgraded while skipping a stable release though (e.g. 8.04 - 9.04) so I've got no advice or experience there. -- SIMON IVES www.simonives.info - Please consider the environment before printing this email or any attachments. -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au
Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty the Netbook Launcher
Hi all. Last week when 9.04 was released I updated my Asus Eee PC 701sd with an image from Telstra's site. The update went fine and everything functions as it should, except the Ubuntu Netbook Launcher. I've had to revert to the standard Ubuntu desktop and give up on the UNL as it was running exceptionally slow. For example, my mouse movements would be extremely jerky: running the mouse from the top to bottom of the menu item list on the left would take around three seconds. Everything else seems fine. My netbook's got a gig of RAM and a non-overclocked 900Mhz processor. The CPU and RAM stats under sys monitor are all pretty low, actually lower than they were under Hardy. I can't figure out why the UNL is running so poorly. Any ideas? Any one else had similar problems? Re: AUS LoCo status?
Getting some LoCo groups up and running, and regularly, would be great. Given that Australia is a large, vast, and at times lonely place, would it be possible to pool some talent and get some online meetings running too? When I lived in South East QLD the Local LUG was great, and the LUG in Brisbane (University of QLD) was exceptional. Now that I live in a remote location (Mount Isa) it would seem that to participate in any Linux/Ubuntu community the only option is online. I haven't got any specific programming skills to offer, my areas of speciality are Logic, Ethics, and Community Development. If any of these skills are needed in getting a LoCo (or a few) off the ground then just shoot me a message. One question to anyone who might know: how, if at all, is Ubuntu registered in Australia? -- Simon Ives si...@simonives.info www.simonives.info Please consider the environment before printing this email or any attachments. -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au
Open assets etc. in new 'Desk'
My primary computer is a notebook with a relatively small screen. Consequently, I utilise four virtual 'desks' (in Gnome) when working with various assets. I usually have open on 'desk' one the root directory containing the assets (and their sub-assets), and I open each asset type on a new 'desk'. For example, I may have open Nautilus on 'desk' one, Open Office on 'desk' two, Gimp on 'desk' three and the Gnome terminal emulator on 'desk' four. My question is, is there a way that I can set up Nautilus to have an option in the context menu that will allow me to select which 'desk' I open each asset on? I currently open each asset on 'desk' one and then move it to the appropriate 'desk' but this can get a little tedious when working with lots of assets. Re: ubuntu-au Digest, Vol 33, Issue 19
I use mplayer to save streamed content, including that from ABC Radio National, to my PC. To get mplayer enter the following in the terminal: sudo aptitude install mplayer To save the audio file from RN you need to discover the URL for it. This is not the main URL from the website, that URL is simply a playlist. To get the file's URL you need to: 1. Click the 'listen' link for the program you wish to save. 2. Click on 'Window's Media'. 3. Right click the 'now playing' window and select 'view source'. 4. Scroll down until you find the section that begins with the line 'object id=Media Player'. In this section you'll find the link to the playlist. The link for the RN live stream reads 'http://www.abc.net.au/streaming/RN.asx'. 5. a/ In Gedit select 'Open Location' and enter the playlist URL. For example - 'http://www.abc.net.au/streaming/RN.asx'. b/ You may also enter 'wget http://www.abc.net.au/YOUR_URL' into the terminal and open the downloaded file in a text editor. 6. There will usually be two entries, one prefixed with 'http' and one prefixed with 'mms', select the one prefixed with 'mms'. 7. enter the following in the terminal - mplayer mms://SUBSTITUE-YOUR-URL-HERE -dumpstream -PATH-TO-SAVE-TO YOUR-FILENAME. (note: there are important spaces here). This will stream the file via mplayer and save it where you want. If the program is regular and doesn't have a podcast/listen option then you may want to schedule the stream save with bash and cron. You can use this method to discover the mms/http URL of streams so that you can listen to them in your favourite media players too. -- Simon Ives [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.simonives.info Please consider the environment before printing this email or any attachments. -- Message: 4 Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2008 22:28:27 +1100 From: Ross [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Recording radio stream from sound card - how? David, can you create an image with K3b and burn from that with the software that does work for you? Open K3b, select 'New Audio CD Project' and drag your files into the burn window. Select 'burn' and in the next window, in the 'writing' tab, select 'Only create image'. There are other options in the other tabs, such as where you want the image to be created, that you can fiddle with. K3b will create an image of an audio CD for you that you should be able to burn onto a CD with whatever software works for you. I know this is only a temporary 'fix', but it'll get you burning while you figure out what's up with your drive using native Linux apps. -- Simon Ives [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.simonives.info Please consider the environment before printing this email or any attachments. -- Message: 4 Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2008 13:41:29 +1100 From: David Ryder [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: ubuntu-au Digest, Vol 33, Issue 11 To: Ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain Thanks - I assumed cd players could read the wav format because they still appear as wav files when listed on the cd - but I accept what you say. Remove Windows Thumbs.db Files
I've just copied a directory from my wife's Windows XP box to my Hardy file server in preparation to reformat her PC to run Ubuntu solely. As I copied the entire directory (her Windows XP user directory) along came some annoying and unnecessary Windows files, specifically a whole heap of files called Thumbs.db. There are about 700 directories in the My Music directory alone, most containing Thumbs.db files. I don't really want to have to enter each directory and remove them individually. Audio Error
Hi All. Today I discovered a little audio error that I hadn't noticed before. Perhaps this has only just occured as I'm using 8.10 so there are daily (or almost) updates. Some applications simply do not play any audio. I've just tried an mp3 in audacious, nothing. I tried hovering the mouse over the file in Nautilus, nothing. But the same file plays fine in vlc. AVI files play fine in xine but not the default mplayer. When I go to System - Preferences - Sound and select test under Music and Movies: Sound Playback I receive the following error: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Failed to connect: Connection refused That's using Pulse Audio. If I select OSS I receive: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not open audio device for playback. Device is being used by another application. If I select ALSA I receive: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not open audio device for playback I'm not quite sure what's going on here as sound is certainly working in some applications. -- Simon Ives [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.simonives.info Please consider the environment before printing this email or any attachments. -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

Re: FSTAB Auto Mount
Hi Hamish Hi Simon Can you check three things: 1. that the /etc/smbcredentials file exists post-upgrade File's there. 2. the permissions on that file The permissions for the above file are listed as: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root35 2008-05-27 16:17 smbcredentials 3. that the file contents are correct The file contents are the same as pre-upgrade. I am not 100% sure but checking System-Administration-System Log might some light too. Look in syslog and filter for cifs. There is nothing in syslog of any note. There is a single cifs error from yesterday when I executed sudo mount -a and the Windows box was powered down. I don't think this is a cifs issue (alone) as the NFS share doesn't mount at start-up either. I thought that it was either a permission/group issue or the machine was attempting to mount the shares before it had finished connecting to the network. Mythbuntu 8.01 DVB Hardware Issue
Hi All, I'm having a minor hardware issue that I hope someone can help me with. Yesterday I decided to make my wife's Windows XP based desktop dual boot Mythbuntu 8.01 so that I'd have access to the media on my file server via a media centre interface in the bedroom. I've got Mythbuntu 8.01 running fine in the living room, but with a different dvb card. Mythbuntu installed fine except two things. The first is that I'm as yet unable to configure widescreen support for the ATI card, but I can get this fixed on my own. What's got me stumped is the DVB card. The card is a DViCO FusionHDTV DVB-T Lite, a bit old but is supposed to work with stock kernels since 2.6.9. Mythbuntu, however, doesn't seem able to see the card. The relevant section of lsmod reads: Module | Size | Used by dvb_bt8xx | 17796 | 1 dvb_core | 81404 | 1 dvb_bt8xx and bttv | 175860 | dvb_bt8xx bt878 So the modules seem to be there. If I cd into /dev/dvb/ a single adapter is listed as adapter0 However, upon dmesg | grep dvb I get: [ 41.072890] bttv0: add subdevice dvb0 Any suggestions and/or help would be much appreciated. -- Simon Ives [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.simonives.info Please consider the environment before printing this email or any attachments. -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

The best way is to properly integrate your authentication systems, or at the very least ensure that user accounts that exist on the Windows machines also exist on the Linux machines and within Samba with the same passwords. i.e.: your windows username/password is also added to Linux via the useradd and passwd commands, and to Samba via the smbpasswd - -a command. Failing that, go to the directory in question, and type: chmod -R a+rwX /directoryname I should note that this is highly frowned upon by Linux sysadmins (which I am one). Opening up world access to your file system is a poor substitute for properly configuring your services and authentication. What the above command does is recursively add read and write permissions for all (User, Group and Other). Additionally, the upper case X adds execute permissions to directories ONLY. In order to actually enter/use a directory, execute permissions must be enabled on it. Whatever you do, DO NOT run chmod -R 777 /dirname. This will also clobber standard files with the execute permission, making any plain file executable. This has potentially dire consequences should someone try to run one of them. | | Further, is there a way that I can set all newly created directories and | files within this particular directory to inherit the file permissions | of the parent directory? In your smb.conf on a per-share basis, set the create mask and directory mask options as needed. In your case, create mask = 0666 and directory mask = 0777 will ensure all files and directories are created with the correct permissions (again, I would hope you investigate matching up your user accounts instead, and set these to 0640 and 0750 respectively). man smb.conf for more help on your Samba configuration, and more detailed explanations on all of the above. - -Dan -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFIoNCBeFJDv0P9Qb8RAlI8AJ9t7Kpx6gc37xLZ9AhIoz4TVPdjVACeNH84 Cm1pGjj/3jNmKr9U7TTqdGY= =6Xt2 -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

I ask because I am currently studying and my experience has been that reports could be written in anything and had to be submitted basically in a format that the lecturer could read. Most of the letcturers were open to installing standard/free software if need be. To me .doc, .sxw, .ppt etc are formats for authoring, but why would you submit a report in one when the marker has _no_ need to edit your work? PDF is a format that is ideally suited to the job and this is what I submitted in. Formats for assessment are an issue, but more so with Windows than with Linux. I've done a fair bit of external study and submitting your assessment items through web systems such as blackboard (or whatever that weird one is that UniSA use) often requires Microsoft formats. What's good about Open Office (for example) is that you can save in .DOC if you must, but you also have access to quite a range of other formats. If your T.A. wants .DOC then you can do that, if another T.A. wants .PDF then you can do that too. Aside from a list of alternate programs, which is a necessary requirement, I'm also interested specifically in productivity and usability benefits that come with using Ubuntu. For example, can a particular student perform a particular task as easily, or easier, on Ubuntu. Can a particular task be done quicker? What program options are available in Linux that aren't available in Windows? Simple case study. Student A is provided the task of undertaking a research project and needs to submit a literature review. This review should be presented in .PDF format with links between the table of contents and the relevant headings. A title page should be attached. The page numbers should be as follows: Cover Page: No Number Table of Contents: Roman Numerals (IVX etc.) Content: Standard Characters (0-9) Appendix: Roman Numerals (IVX etc.) It should include at least 50 references presented in the text and a list of references at the end in Harvard format. The table of contents should also provide a list of illustrations/images. Now, if the student were to undertake such a project in Ubuntu where would he or she start? What tools are available? How do they compare to any commercially available Windows alternatives? The list of recommended programs so far includes: a) Open Office.org b) Gimp c) Makefile d) Gcc e) Open-jdk f) Mozilla Firefox g) Zim (personal wiki) h) Eclipse i) gedit j) RapidSVN k) Pidgin -- Simon Ives E - [EMAIL PROTECTED] M - [EMAIL PROTECTED] W - www.simonives.info Please consider the environment before printing this email or any attachments. -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au
Remote SSH
Can someone please help with the syntax to remotely SSH to my Ubuntu file server. I've opened the server's I.P address and port 22 in the router and verified that this has occurred with Shields Up (it reported the server's host-name and that port 22 is open). I'm just unsure of how to SSH from a remote location. The syntax I've attempted is: ssh 124.171.***.*** (which is my public I.P address provided by my ISP) and ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] Both return the following error: ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host I can SSH over the local network with no problems. Wireless USB Adaptor
Recently the Broadcom chip-set based wireless card in my notebook decided to die. One of the circuits actually fried somehow! Anyhow, has anyone had any success with Wireless USB adaptors under Ubuntu? At home my wireless router is a D-Link DSL-G604T capable of both 802.11b and 802.11g. I'm not sure of what wireless technology is in use at Uni (Uni of QLD and ANU) though. I'd need an adaptor capable of connecting to both networks. I'm currently using LAN at home but I'll need some way of accessing the wireless at Uni after the holidays. Printing from Hardy to Printer on Windows XP
Hi All. I'm having a small issue printing to my new HP 2180 printer, attached to a Windows XP box and made available to the outside world via smb. I'm fairly certain that I've set it up all OK from Administration - Printing. At least when the Add New Printer setup procedure scans for the printer it says it's there. Anyhow, the issue I'm having is that whenever I attempt to print to this printer from Hardy I'm getting the following error: Can not get the ticket cache for simon (where 'simon' is my Hardy user-name) in CUPS. The output from running smbclient -L goodvibes-desk ('goodvibes-desk' is my Windows XP box name), that clearly lists my printer, is: Domain=[GOODVIBES-DESK] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] Sharename Type Comment - --- E$ Disk Default share IPC$IPC Remote IPC print$ Disk Printer Drivers SharedDocs Disk C Disk HPDesk Printer HP Deskjet F2100 series F$ Disk Default share F Disk E Disk Printer2Printer Adobe PDF ADMIN$ Disk Remote Admin C$ Disk Default share Domain=[GOODVIBES-DESK] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] Server Comment ---- WorkgroupMaster ---- begin:vcard fn:Simon Ives n:Ives;Simon email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] x-mozilla-html:TRUE url:http://www.simonives.info version:2.1 end:vcard -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

Wondering if anyone can help with what details I should include from the following Cisco .pcf file for my VPNC .conf file. I've already decoded the password but I'm still having an issue connecting to the vpn. Of course, the Uni help desk is overly Windows centric and is only interested in Cisco support so no help there. Samsung SGH-A412
Hi all. I've just received a Samsung SGH-A412 mobile phone from Telstra and I'm trying to get it to communicate, without any luck, via USB with Gutsy 64bit. When I plug the phone in to the PCs USB port the phone switches on but that's the extent of it. All I'd like to do is be able to upload/download files, mainly OOG audio tracks, to the phone's memory. I'm not happy being stuck on my Win XP box to interact with this device. Please excuse my NOOB abilities here. nVidia Widescreen no longer working fstab question
I commented out all of those sections and Gutsy still booted into a lower resolution. I started up nvidia-settings again (sudo nvidia-settings) to alter the xorg.conf file. There is a section that asks for your default resolution. Mine was set to 'auto' so I changed it to '1280x800, restarted x, and now I'm back into 1280x800 as my default resolution. I have one more question that I hope you all may be able to help with. I'm trying to auto mount a drive located on my wife's Windows box that I've set up as a samba share. I can access the drive via Places - Network but the line I'm entering into fstab isn't working. The line is - //goodvibes-desk/C /mnt/windows_media smbfs fmask=0777,dmask=0777 0 0 The 'C' in the first section works fine, however, that's not the drive I wish to mount. The share name of the drive is '3 (E)'. If I enter 3 (E) then I get an error. If I enter 3%20(E), what Nautilus displays, I also get an error. I know I can connect because when I use 'C' as the share name there are no issues. Any ideas on how this should be represented in fstab? -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au
nVidia widescreen no longer working.
I hope there is someone here who can help with this annoying issue. For whatever reason, when I booted into Ubuntu Gutsy this morning my graphics driver and sound driver were no longer recognised. I hadn't performed an update, although this is now irrelevant. I was forced to enter into a 'low resolution' mode of 640x800. I updated my kernel headers via synaptic which allowed the audio to function again and the nVidia driver (restricted drivers) to load. However, now I can no longer enable widescreen resolutions. If I enter System - Administration - Screens and Graphics and select the 'Widescreen' option I just receive a message saying 'All Users Must Log Off For The Changes To Take Effect'. If I do log off then I just get a 640x800 resolution again. I'll paste my xorg.conf file below in the hope that someone can recommend some changes. Also, what's with all of the xorg.conf files? I've never had so many before! I've got xorg.conf through to xorg.conf.18 a xorg.conf.backup and a few xorg.conf.failsafe files. Below is just xorg.conf. By the way, my notebook is a Compaq Presario V3118AU. The screen resolution is (should be) 1280x800. Re: emails open as attachments?

I am trying to emulate some preferences I had in Outlook Express. ie, I want to have my outgoing mails in the font you see here - Comic Sans MS but I want to receive incoming mails in the format they were sent. I have returned to OE to send this - to illustrate what I want. This email came up in a discussion I had offline with a few friends and all of us agreed that plain text emails are just the way to go... and if you have to use HTML ideally don't specify the typeface besides serif or sans-serif. Finally, for the love of all that is good and holy, please refrain from using Comic Sans MS for *anything ever*, other than perhaps comics (for which there are better typefaces anyway). ^_^ The main reasons for not using HTML I think were outlined in the earlier emails, but they essentially comes down to two things. Firstly, security: it is possible to create malicious HTML code within emails (this is in fact more an issue for Outlook Express users since the product is quite poor regarding security) and it's larger and unnecessary. I can understand that some organisations desire styled HTML newsletter emails but that's about the extent of it. Besides this font issue (which I hope we've convinced you shouldn't be an issue...) how are you finding Thunderbird by the way? (I've never asked anyone who has just moved from Outlook Express to Thunderbird). Ta and toodles. -Pascal Seems simple but . . . . . .
