To Norm, I agree, sort of, with most of what you said except this. I
think local school principals who are trying to work within a budget
handed down by head office would be happy for any opportunity to cut
costs in any area yet still have something that is equal to or better
than what they have already paid for in the past.

To Peter, I think its obvious you are doing a great thing.

To Jared, I think a release special is still a great idea. Maybe offer
the free CDs to things like Computer Banks (http://
www.armidale.nsw.gov.au/communityorgs/7808.html) or old age hostels or
something similar where the people who are getting the service are in
need for it. There ar plenty of Computer Banks around and I'm sure
some would appreciate the help.

Just a thought.
Michael (k3lt01).

Re: A local Shipit service for regional users

2010-03-18 Thread Norm, VK3XCI
G'day,

Just some random thoughts in a brainstorm kind of way.

I too have been following this thread for a while and wondering where it was
leading. I offer the following opinions (mine and mine only!)

I too got frustrated with the global shipit service some time ago and have
given
up on it. I have availed myself of Peter's service, he is prompt and
inexpensive.

Do we really need to reinvent the wheel? The infrastructure is already in place.

At $2.60 I'm happy to bet that Peter is only just covering media, post and
packing costs. I don't think he's getting rich off it!!!

Perhaps Peter's service is only catering to the already converted? If we want
to
do a promo for each release, (with free CD and some nice packaging as in
Shipit)
I would think it comes in around $3.00 to $3.50 per CD shipped singly.

While we all love Ubuntu and try to promote it at every opportunity, there has
to be a good business case as well. A sponsor would be handy... say a Computer
mag or duplication service... someone who's name/logo could be up there on the
disk or packaging.

A hand labeled generic disk is NOT going to cut it with the local school
principal or small business owner.

PS...
Sorry I wasn't "at" the meeting. I'm dyslexic and found the random postings
VERY
hard to follow. Ended up printing out the log and going through it with a
couple
of hi-lighters. No way I could do it in real time!

Re: A local Shipit service for regional users

2010-03-18 Thread Jared Norris
Peter,

Thanks for the information, with those sorts of numbers I don't think
it's really a viable option to run it free permanently to all and
sundry (quick calculations in my head, 3 CDs a day, $2 a CD equals
ROUGHLY $2000 a year). So unless someone is willing to put up $2000 a
year I'd say keep up the good work, obviously I under estimated the
willingness of people to pay for the delivery. I would still like to
press forward with the free CDs for the Lucid release as a promotional
thing for the release to try and get it out there quicker and easier
for a limited period of time (pretty much limited by how many orders
we get, if we get a large number it will end sooner sort of thing). I
was thinking if by the time the release comes around and we have a lot
of spare CDs to distribute after the orders have been taken care of we
might try and tee up a notice on your website at some stage but I
think we can cross that bridge a bit later down the track.

If anyone has any ideas how we can get this out to people that would
benefit from free CDs for the Lucid release please let me know.

Jared

2010-03-18 Thread peter baker
hey guys

I have been following the discussion on a local Shipit service for regional
users with interest. I setup www.ubuntu.net.au a couple of years ago with
the aim of making ubuntu available to people who have hassles downloading or
burning the distro themsleves. I get quite a few orders from really remote
communities, esp in WA so I guess it is doing what it is meant to do.

how popular is the service? I get around 30 unique visitors to the site
every day. from that I usually get 1 or 2 orders/day. most of the orders
come via paypal although I do accept stamps in the mail. I get some lovely
comments via letters that people send me. so its not a lot of orders but it
is consistent and it is growing

so. I think your *free* aussie shipit service for ubuntu 10.04 is a great
idea. I think the thing that is going to slow you down is postage costs,
every cd costs $1.10 in postage. I'm happy to provide a description of what
you guys are doing and a link on the main page of www.ubuntu.net.au I
already link to the download section of ubuntu.com so that people can
download their own copy.

Re: A local Shipit service for regional users

2010-03-17 Thread Jared Norris
Andrew,

I had a set amount of money I was willing to donate myself but as far
as time goes I was pretty much willing to do any of it myself if
others weren't able to assist. As far as receiving the donations I
guess this will be dependant on how many people order it and what sort
of money was required to fill the order.

Michael,

The "order CD" tab on the website links to a permanent service where
you pay for postage and they send you a CD. My original intention for
this as a release celebration to get people starting to use it and
update their PCs over the next couple of months rather than an ongoing
commitment to send out CDs. However you raise a good point, whoever it
is that runs that service (the site says Peter Baker - I have seen the
name before on the list I believe but unable to obtain an email
address so if you're reading this, Hi) I would be interested in
knowing just how many times a month/year it is used. If it is
infrequent I probably wouldn't mind continuing the service for free
but it it's a regular occurrence getting people to pay for their own
postage is the only viable option other than the official Shipit
service.

I was contemplating putting this on the "Roadmap to Lucid" page as a
project and going to see if anyone with access to ubuntu.org.au can
put it on the front page as "News" with the contact details already
supplied to the list for this project that would also be another way
of getting it out there.

Jared

2010-03-17 Thread Michael
There is already an "order cd" tab on the website, the only problem is
it isn't Jared's name listed. Maybe the tab should list the original
page as well as Jared's information.

I also wonder if it is feasible to do a USB option. I realise this
would cost more but it could also offer more and would be more useful
to people with a netbook that doesn't have a cd/dvd drive. I would be
more than happy to assist with setting USBs up.

Not everybody subscribes to the mail list.
We need to get a notice on the website & Facebook.

How many people do you have donating time ?
How are you collecting money to pay for the CD's ?

Just some questions!!

2010-03-17 Thread Jared Norris
Thanks Scott!

This is a great response so far. We don't have many orders so far (I
realise as we get closer to release that will increase) but I'm now
confident of at least filling all the orders we do get. I've added you
to the spreadsheet (and don't worry, donations of timer or money are
both very useful as some people have one and not the other).

So anyone not easily able to download new releases, let me know and
I'll record your order.

Re: A local Shipit service for regional users

2010-03-16 Thread Jared Norris
Good Evening,

Thanks everyone for the responses. I probably didn't explain it all
too well last night but I realise there are services out there
charging nominal fees for CDs but I was thinking of trying to get it
to the regional (and those unable to access boradband easily) a
quicker, FREE way to get a copy of Lucid Lynx (even if the fee is
nominal it's sometimes means people won't opt for it because it is not
always easy to transfer the funds wihtout effort). It's not meant to
replace the "official" CDs but just trying to speed up the process
(and who as a home user really NEEDS and official CD?). I was going to
offer this free to anyone and everyone all by myself but realised it
might chalk up some costs but if more people were willing to chip in
then it would spread it out. Thank you James for your offer I've noted
it down and anyone else willing to chip in please drop me a line
(again either on the list or off, also on IRC). I just thought it
would be a nice way to quickly and cheaply spread the Ubuntu cheer.

So I guess this is a shoutout now to those of you on the list who do
not have access to broadband easily, please start letting me know if
you want a free burnt copy of lucid lynx. It's a LTS so it should be
pretty stable from release (touch wood) and I'm willing to take orders
of which version of Ubuntu you want (k/x/ed/ubuntu) just nothing too
obscure please. All details will be kept confidential (obvious
whomever ends up posting you the CD will need an address, PO BOX is
fine) so feel free to email me off the list or message me on IRC.

Regards,

Jared Norris

Hi All,

You may want to try get in contact / coordinate with Peter Baker
(jellyware) as he does the cds[1] too, as he got web site and checkout
already setup.

Dale

Sounds like a nice way to provide a value add for regional Aus and I'm happy
to be part of the experiment.

I'm prepared to fund $20 worth of CDs. Ie, I''ll burn / ship 8 CDs @2.50
each. More if the potage is less :)

Is there any Ubuntu CD art work we can access?

cheers
James
