I didn't want to change my file system to ext4. And I didn't upgrade. I did
a clean install with ext3 JFS partition.

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Feedback

2009-05-08 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Monitor resolution problem was present for me upto Intrepid. If I used
nVidia driver, the monitor resolution changed to 800x600. There was no
option to increase it other than editing the "xorg.conf". But in Jaunty,
everything worked perfectly for me.

Network manager is the same as was in Intrepid because I use GP internet
through my mobile.

Boot up time reduced to 70sec for me, don't know why. My HDD partition (in
which Jaunty is installed) is still ext3 JFS.

Firefox freezed for 3-4 seconds in several times. But thats not a big deal
for me.

In Intrepid, Synaptic freezed occassionally, Jaunty's Synaptic seemed more
stable to me so far.

Just out of curiosity, if Jaunty doesn't have wvdial then how the Network
Applet connects to internet through mobile phones right out of the box? What
does it use as the background program? I am using SE k550i for internet
through the network applet, I haven't installed anything for using internet.

[Ubuntu-BD] Open source alternative to Dreamweaver

2009-05-06 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Hello all

Could anyone please suggest me an open source alternative to Adobe
Dreamweaver? I use it regularly to update my personal website.

I know about Quanta Plus and Bluefish. Quanta Plus is basically for KDE and
I personally don't like running KDE apps in Gnome. Moreover, I doubt that
the ease of use of Dreamweaver is present in Quanta Plus, as appears from
the screenshots of Quanta Plus.

I don't know HTML programming, so Bluefish is not an option, I guess. Can
anyone suggest me anything else for my Ubuntu 9.04?

Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-BD] [OT] How file systems affect computer performance

2009-01-25 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Hello

I just want to share some experiences of you guys about the startup and
shutdown time of your PC and thus decide how a file system affects these.

My PC takes almost similar startup and shutdown time for both XP and Ubuntu
8.04.1 [85-90 sec for startup; 10-12 sec for shutdown]. I read and article
on the internet that Ubuntu would start faster if the filesystem is XFS. So,
I tried that. But the boot time was as it were.

Now, I have mac os x 10.4.9 on my PC with HFS+ file system and it boots
within 30sec and shuts down within 8sec. How could this happen?

The other software start times like Firefox, VLC are the same as windows xp
and ubuntu 8.04.1. How could boot time is reduced but the program start time
remain the same?

Where is the secret?

I am also a Gnome fan. But I tried openSUSE 11.1 KDE 4.1.3 and it never

Anyway, openSUSE is the boss of KDE. They might have been done something to
make their distro stable.

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] [OT] openSuSE 11.1 internet connection problem

Hardware is detected properly. The notification which appears after
connecting the phone is exactly the same as in Ubuntu intrepid. And I
double checked it with "dmesg".

I tried with "kppp" as well by installing openSuSE 11.0 KDE. But
failed on that occasion too. "wvdial" and "resolv.conf" editing in KDE
did the job as in gnome.

Anyway, I just wanted to try the new OS, thats all. Ubuntu is really
great for novice people like me. I agree ubuntu does not have the
visibly soothing look, the customized openoffice suit or some other
aspects, but for ease of use, there is nothing comparable to ubuntu or
mint. I am sticking to hardy 8.04.1.

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] [OT] openSuSE 11.1 internet connection problem

2008-12-23 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
It works. The final way of action was:

1. run "wvdialconf"
2. edit "/etc/wvdial.conf" to include phone number and "Init3" string
3. edit "/etc/resolv.conf" to include name server address
4. copy the resolv.conf file to "/etc/ppp/"
5. In terminal,type wvdial {dialer name} and hit Enter

I still wonder why a mainstream linux distro like openSuSE don't have
a easy way to configure mobile internet. Or there might be one, I may
have missed.

Thanks for the help.

How do I know the nameserver IP addresses? I use GP internet. They
don't give any info about these.

And I checked the "/etc/resolv.conf" file on Ubuntu 8.04.1. It
contains two lines like you said above. But the IP is different [which
is obvious though]. I am checking with those IPs.

[Ubuntu-BD] [OT] openSuSE 11.1 internet connection problem

2008-12-22 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Hello all

Could anyone please give me a tutorial about setting up internet
connection using GPRS/EDGE enabled mobile on openSuSE 11.1 (gnome) ?

I have downloaded openSuSE 11.1 gnome live CD and tried many ways to
connect to the internet using my SonyEricsson k550i. The network
manager applet on Ubuntu 8.10 or Linux Mint 6 was very handy and could
let me connect to the internet using the mobile right away from the
live CD, just had to specify GrameenPhone as the operator. But in
openSuSE 11.1, the network manager could not find any network operator
when I command it to 'SCAN' for networks. Moreover, it somehow deletes
all the data accounts from my mobile itself and set my mobile in
'FLIGHT MODE'.

Anyway, then [after rebooting] I tried to use YaST modem setup to
configure the mobile modem manually. But still no luck. No internet
connection. But the data accounts were intact and my phone was not set
to flight mode. Then I tried "wvdialconf" and edited "wvdial.conf"
thereafter. This time the computer connects to the mobile phone. But
if I ping any site, it says "cannot resolve hostname". After getting
this message, I edited the "ip-up.local" file as following a tutorial
like this:

cat > /etc/ppp/ip-up.local
#!/bin/sh
mv /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.bak
cp /etc/ppp/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf
chmod 644 /etc/resolv.conf

chmod +x /etc/ppp/ip-up.local

But still no luck. Could anyone please help connect to the internet
from openSuSE 11.1? I'll prefer GUI solution [like "gnome-ppp" on
Hardy]. But command line solutions are welcome as well. Sorry for my
long mail.

Thank you in advance.

What is the final decision then? I mean, if I use ubuntu, should I have
to download the RAR addon through synaptic? And then just uncompressing
the first part, I would be able to combine all of the parts?

I have uncompressed the files and combined them [automatically] using
the built in archeive manager in Linux Mint 6. No problem with that
software yet.

[Ubuntu-BD] How to unrar and combine multiple RAR files on Ubuntu

2008-12-16 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Hello all,

Those of us who download movies or TV series are familiar with the
situation that there are multiple RAR files for a movie or TV series
episode or a game like:

abcd-part1.rar
abcd-part2.rar
abcd-part3.rar

Now, in windows, using winRAR, nothing else is needed to be done to
uncompress and combine the files except for choosing any one file and
give the command 'Extract Here...'. What should I use on Ubuntu /
Linux Mint for this?

2008-12-16 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
I know very little about the command line linux like editing xorg.conf
or something like that. I opened the xorg.conf file, but everything
seems obscure to me...

Anyway, I have changed the resolution by NVidia Display Settings menu
which appeared after installing the proprietory driver. But the screen
seems to be flickering. I used to run windows xp/vista with the same
settings 1024x768,32bit,60Hz

[Ubuntu-BD] Help needed about display resolution

2008-12-16 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Hello

I have recently installed Linux Mint 6 on my Pentium 4, GeForce FX
5200 128MB, 1536MB RAM, Samsung 551s monitor PC. The problem I am
facing is, initially the display resolution [both on liveCD and first
boot] was OK, 1024x768. But after installing the proprietory driver
for nVidia graphics card, my resolution switched to 800x600. And I
can't change it from Administration-> Display Resolution. The highest
value there is 800x600. I have read on this mailing list someone
talking about modifying "xorg.conf" to solve this mess, but I can't
find the mail. Can anyone help me to simultaneously use proprietory
driver and run on 1024x768 screen resolution??

Thanks in advance

Well, I thought about it too. My downlink BW is around 220kbits and
uplink BW is around 80-96kbts.

It may not be very fast. In fact, it would be a slow web page. But in
the course of doing it, I might learn a lot about web servers.

I have tried this. But they asks to download a small program
'ip_confirm.exe' which my Avira antivirus detects as a virus.

I have also tried 110MB.com. But for some reasons I failed to sync

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] Help needed about hosting a web page

2008-12-03 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Firstly, Thank you for your quick reply.

@shiplu vai,

I want to host a webpage which would be accessible for all. I know I
don't have a static IP, but that might be covered by DynDNS or
NO-IP.com type services. All I want is to host my tiny personal web
page [of about 50MB total size] on my own PC. I fear to host it on my
PC directly due to virus and firewall problems. Thus I have decided to
create a virtual web server using VirtualBox and host the web page
there.

@Lenin vai,

I have downloaded XAMPP for both windows and linux. I will install it
manually. My main problem is the internet connectivity from Guest and
Host. My host runs windows xp pro sp3 and my net connection is
SonyEricsson k550i GP-EDGE.

Thank you in advance.

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] remove unneeded file

2008-11-19 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
I faced the same problem. My graphics card is nVidia GeForce FX 5200. But I
think the problem is with the monitor. When I use my old Samsung 551s
monitor and download the nVidia driver, the resolution reduces to 800x600,
and I couldn't change it. But if I use a newer monitor [LG 501], nVidia
driver works just fine. The problem was in Hardy and in Intrepid as well.

Very good article Shahriar. Thank you for writing it. I am curious
about one thing, in older ubuntu cd versions, the gnome ppp was
absent. I mean, it needed to be downloaded from the repo. As per your

did you had to install gnome ppp separately?

[ Ubuntu-BD ] Problem about LAN File Sharing

2008-06-26 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Hello all

I am having some problem with my home network file sharing. I have
connected two computers at my home with a cross-over LAN cable. One
computer runs Ubuntu 8.04 and another runs Windows XP sp2. I have
installed 'samba' and 'smbfs' on my Ubuntu machine. Now the problems
are:

1. I can 'see' and write on the HDD of my XP machine from the ubuntu
machine if I TURN ON the XP MACHINE FIRST and THEN TURN ON THE UBUNTU
MACHINE. I cant ping the xp machine if the ubuntu machine is turned on
first. How can i solve this situation?

NB: I tried 'sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart'; but no luck.

2. My XP machine cannot see the ubuntu machine. I have made my '/home'
partition enabled for sharing and guest access. How can i write and read
from the HDD of the ubuntu machine from the xp machine??

Could anyone please help me out of this mess?
Thanks in advance

[ Ubuntu-BD ] Differences between linux kernels

2008-05-20 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Hello all

Can anyone please tell me the differences between 'generic' kernel,
'i386' kernel and 'i686' kernel ?

When i type 'uname -r' in the terminal, Ubuntu shows the following:

'2.6.24-16-generic'

But when i type 'uname -m', it shows:

'i686'

My processor is P4 2.40C GHz. Does computer performance depends on
kernel version ? that is, should i use 'i686' kernel ?

Thanks in advance

Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Thanks to All

2008-05-20 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
The file system in linux is not like windows. Thus in linux you won't
have separate drives like C:, D: etc. Windows recognises the file system
and hard disk partitions by these drive letters. But linux access
separate partitions of the hard disk by "mounting" them into several
directories. There is no drive letters in linux. The complete hard disk
is mounted under the root '/' and other directories.

For instance, I have
'/' partition of 6GB.
'/home' partition of 7GB and
'/usr' partition of 20GB

In the '/usr' partition linux usually [by default] stores the installed
programs [not sure, may be I am wrong]. That's why I gave it much more
room than the others.

I have created a separate partition for '/home' to backup my necessary
files and system files. So that, I can use the Back Up programs to get
my system folders [/ , /usr , /etc , /root] backed up in a separate
partition.

That's all I know. Hope I am not wrong..

[ Ubuntu-BD ] Suggestion about Linux learning guide/book

2008-05-19 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Hello all

Could you please suggest me a book [that is available in Nilkhet or on
the Internet] that will teach me Ubuntu/Linux starting from the basics
to some advanced level?

The problem is, I am using Ubuntu, doing many things using the GUI and
terminal without actually knowing them in depth.

For example, I have installed Matlab using command line, following a
tutorial. From that I came to know that "sh" is needed for running
"shell scripts". But I do not actually know what a shell script is.
Similarly, I have installed java and created symbolic links for java
plug-ins for Matlab and Firefox, but all i did was just to follow some
tutorial on the net. I know I must write "sudo -i" to be the root, but i
don't know what the "-i" stands for.

But I want to Learn linux thoroughly, starting from basic file
operations in both CLI and GUI to advanced and system integrated tasks.

Can you please help me?

Thanks in advance

Yes vaia, I am sure that i have the linux version of miktex. I have

My computer is more than 5 years old. It is in fact a Pentium 4 2.40 GHz
with HT,1.5GB RAM and GeForce Fx5200 128 MB graphics card. I assumed
that Ubuntu 8.04 would not have the driver for my graphics card. So i
have downloaded it from nVidia web site before and installed on Ubuntu.

There is no problem with Compiz Fusion enabling except the MATLAB
problem. Even GoogleEarth works great on my Ubuntu.

You told me to switch to Metacity/Emerald while running MATLAB. I guess
these are desktop environments like GDM or something. As I am actually a
newbie to linux, I don't know how to enable/install these. Could you
please help me?

Thanks in advance

I have tried to connect to the net using the
"gnome-pppfixedforgutsy_0.3.24-1_i386.deb". but i have failed to do.
Somehow it does not find my mobile.

But if i type 'lsusb' in the terminal, it detects my mobile and shows
'Bus 004 Device 002: ID 0fce:d069 Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications
AB'

I don't know what is the problem. Anyway, this is not a big problem.

I had a big problem today. When i enabled "Compiz Fusion", all the menus
from my MATLAB window disappeared. After disabling "Compiz Fusion", they
came back. I don't know why this happened. Does anyone have any idea
about this?

[ Ubuntu-BD ] Some questions

2008-05-10 Thread Hafiz Imtiaz
Hello everybody,

I am a new linux user. I have recently switched to Ubuntu 8.04 from
Windows XP. I am facing some problems. Here they are:

1. I connect to the internet via SonyEricsson k550i using "wvdial".
Every time i have to open the terminal and write "wvdial gpinternet&" to
get connected to the internet and have to keep terminal open. Is there
any way to connect to the internet bypassing terminal. Or, how can i
keep my net connection intact after closing the terminal?

2. I have downloaded glest_3.1.2.tar.gz from www.sourceforge.net, but i
cannot install it on my PC. I have seen "glest" available through
Synaptic. But for that i have to download ~65MB [given the electricity
condition and speed of internet in Bangladesh]. Could you please tell me
the procedure of compiling/installing "glest" ?

3. I used MikTeX and WinEdt in Windows XP for preparing my reports, etc.
I have found MikTeX for linux in Sourceforge but could not find anything
replacing WinEdt. I have heard about "Kile" but i really don't know how
to integrate it with MikTeX to compile TeX files and make/convert those
to PDF. I also have a TexLive2007 CD. But still the problem is
integrating it with a LaTeX IDE like WinEdt. Please help.

4. I have installed MATLAB R2007a UNIX on my Ubuntu 8.04. But i could
not find Image Acquisition Toolbox. I have done a "Full Install" so i
think the toolbox was not in the DVD image. Can i have it installed
manually now?

Please do not get bothered by my long mail. I am a novice linux user
with a lot of questions in my mind about doing all the things i need to
do in linux just like in windows.

Thanks in advance
