Re: [ubuntu-art] Compiz desktop switcher color
I disagree. Orange suits default Ubuntu theme most and the first influence is most important. If someone will be able to change the theme than will also know how to change compiz colours. Ideally - compiz colours should change dynamically to fit the actual theme. I don't think that sch feature could be implemented in Hardy so we have to resolve that problem another way. [ubuntu-uk] Broadband
Hello, Sorry if I am asking a rather basic question - I think I sort of know the answer to this one but would like to be sure. A friend is intending to use my old computer (dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows ME, 450 MHz, 256 GB RAM, 2 USB ports but no ethernet) for modest internet access. I have managed to persuade him that it is safer to use only Ubuntu for the internet, and I have provided a Thomson/Alcatel Speedtouch modem, for which I have Linux drivers, for use in the meantime. However, he may get a laptop at some point, in which case a wireless router might be useful. Has anyone any suggestions as to which ISP's are most suitable and Linux friendly? One constraint is that it would be best if the broadband contract does not affect the way in which phone calls are billed, as he will be using someone else's phone line (with their consent). He has been looking at BT and Orange, but has anyone any comments on PlusNet? Les. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

If you want a Linux friendly ISP, why not try the UKFSN (http://www.ukfsn.org/) as they're a Linux friendly ISP, they even go as far as funding Free Software with their profits. Prices start from about £16 for about an 8MBit connection with 3GB peak and 30GB off peak usage allowance and about £20 for 30Gb peak and 300GB off peak. Peak hours are from 8am to 10pm Monday to Friday and off-peak is from 10pm on Friday to 8am on Monday. He'd be responsible for the activation charge (about £47) and monthly fee, it's separately billed to the main phone bill. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Broadband
if he is intending to use a wireless router it is entirely irrelevant which ISP he uses because it will be the router, not Linux, which logs into ADSL. He may have issues with wireless cards, mind you, though the situation now is a lot better than it was 2-3 years ago... many now seem to work out of the box in a way they didn't then. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Broadband
les wrote: wireless router might be useful. Has anyone any suggestions as to which ISP's are most suitable and Linux friendly? One constraint is that it British Telecom's default supplied wireless router seems to work well with my Dell Ubuntu Linux laptop, but then so does every other wireless router I've connected to. For beginners I always recommend BT for ADSL, since if there is a connection problem, they can't blame it on anyone else. Other ISPs, if you get a connection problem, sometimes they try to fob you off saying there's a fault on the line, and that it's BT's fault; BT then come back and say it's the ISP's fault, and so it goes on in circles. Both my parents and my in-laws use BT broadband and have had zero hassle. Once my dad reported a connection problem to BT, it turned out to be water collecting in a cable tray under the pavement over the road, and of course they sent a man out to dig it up and fix it. To be honest, once you've set up the wireless router and the wireless card on the laptop, there is very little other Linux-specific configuration to be done, so I wouldn't worry about an ISP being specifically Linux friendly, not for a beginner who isn't going to run their own servers or so forth. For more advanced users such as myself, I recommend www.SurfAnyTime.com . They're a small ISP based in the Isle of Man, but have very good UK connectivity and bandwidth, very high uptime, offer static IP addresses at no extra cost, have good download limits for the prices, staff understand Linux needs such as running SMTP servers from home, and the staff are happy to talk tech direct to customers. Best of all, they have public support forums where the technical staff - including the company director himself - take part and answer questions day in, day out. Doing support in public is great because it makes it easy to figure out whether everyone else is having the same problem as you! Of course there is telephone and email support too if you need a little more privacy (not that email, or telephone for that matter, is particularly private). I also recommend my employer www.names.co.uk but due to my declared interest I won't brag too much. Suffice to say that most of our techs run Linux or Mac/BSD on our desktops at work, so we're definitely Linux friendly. We also have real genuine British call centre support staff, manned until 8pm, with real 01xxx telephone numbers (although we provide 0845 numbers too) actually sitting in England (Worcester), and actually in the same open-plan office as the techs! I can't guarantee the first person you speak to on the phone will be a Linux expert, but the second person... no problem. -- Andrew Oakley -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Wireless connection
Hi Caroline, Whilst attempting to connect to the network, I'd recommend tailing your syslog for related messages as it often helps in diagnosing which part of the connection fails. The System Log application under System Administration is good for this as you can watch all your logs at once. I'd had problems with drivers where the card fails to set variables such as the channel or encryption key, other times with cards that do not associate quickly enough to beat the timeout. Sometimes a card will take a bit longer to get traffic going and the DHCP request will time out first time round, if this is the case you can re-run it by launching dhclient from a terminal. Network Manager will forget a key and ask you for it again if you fail to connect to a network the first time round, even if the problem isn't specifically an incorrect key. OSS apps vs. ALSA apps
I finally discovered why I couldn't run Creox and practice guitar using Gtick for a metronome: Gtick is for OSS, and it throws up the error Couldn't start metronome. Please check if specified sound device and sample file are accessible if I try to start it clicking after opening starting Jack. Naturally, Jack won't start if Gtick is already running. It looks like installing the alsa-oss package is what to do to make Gtick compatible with ALSA and therefore with Jack, but I hesitated and thought I'd ask here whether there's any reason not to install that package in an Ubuntu Studio environment--not sure whether it could interfere with something I'm not aware/thinking of. Am I safe on the right track? (If there isn't any reason not to install alsa-oss, then should come installed automatically by Ubuntu Studio so that Gtick plays nice with all the Jack applications out of the box?) --Ray -- Ubuntu-Studio-users mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-users

Jan, I think you have misinterpreted it, on page 21 I read: -) Mac OS = 2,4%, with Mac OS X 10 = 1,8 % -) Linux = 1,5 %, with Ubuntu = 0,3 % It frightens me that actually more people are using Windows 95 - an unsupported operating system - than Ubuntu :-( So if you use this survey as a source, I think we should consider 'growing faster... in desktop/laptop'. What are the other countries in the 'most countries' you mentioned? Sorry for all those nasty questions, but I'm interested in good statistics about the use of Linux in countries :). BTW if you're talking about marketing, I would suspect to read on the website that Ubuntu is the most used Linux operating system in Belgium... with a link to the survey. Maybe a tip :-). See eg. http://www.ubuntu-be.org/index.php?page=ontvangst Considering the respective marketing budgets, Mac OS X must be really bad in practice to be so close to the no-budget operating systems in market share... or otherwise price isn't really relevant! ;-) Ubuntu did have 0.3% back then, which was the largest free OS. And remember, this was based on phone calls to actual internet users, not based on browser stats or similar metrics that are often faked (because of issues with maldesigned websites). Indeed, I hope they will redo this survey next year. [Ubuntu-be] Fosdem 2008
Good evening I don't know if Ubuntu is the most used Linux distro, if I should improve my Dutch (#) to read most of the messages here, if there will be a tram in Liege (#) or if God exists, but the fact is free software has got media attention tonight : I just saw images from Fosdem (with an interview of Christophe Vandeplas (##)) at RTBF evening news. A bit strange indeed : no mention of the words Linux, Ubuntu, or even... Fosdem! No mention of OLPC project when showing them (so most people probably understood it was just another low cost laptop). But at least, they insist on the alternative to Windows, and Christophe mentioned Firefox and Gimp.. Enjoy your Fosdem! (#) Off-topic P.S. : Well, I *should* improve it, of course. Apart from the arguments given by Koen, it would also be easier for me to read this : http://www.humanhub.nl/Regionet_Limburg.pdf (http://www.humanhub.nl/Regionet_Limburg.html) If some people out Limburg could tell me in private what is happening now with this project, I would be very interested. (##) On-topic P.S.: ...but unfortunately, they did not interview Tille. [Ubuntu-be] reminder: language use
Dear all, Just a quick reminder... Please use English wherever possible when posting to this list. Even if the issue at stake is really really specific to the Dutch speaking population, please try to give at least a summary of your message in English. If you're not able to do that yourself, please ask someone to do this for you. This requires some extra effort. The reward is manyfold: * You'll hopefully think twice before making the extra effort, so less blah. * More people within Belgium able to at least somewhat understand what you want to say. Many Dutch, French, German, Italian, Arab, Turkish, Kurdish,... speaking people have at least basic command of Shakespeare's language. * More people outside Belgium able to see what we're talking about. Don't underestimate this one! [Bug 45786] Re: Problem with sound
Hi i have installed Ubuntu yesterday and i have problems with my sound. I wrote this command sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and the bottom line is options snd-cmipci mpu_port=0x330 fm_port=0x388.
