 Hello again!

For Lucid we asked the kernel team to blacklist KMS on i830, i845 i855

This instability (while, apparently, slightly reduced by the 2.12 DDX)
is still present in Maverick, so I asked the kernel team to re-enable
the blacklist in a recent upload.

Since we've got the 2.12 DDX with no userspace modesetting support, that
means that these chips should get vesa. There's an issue¹ with X
actually loading vesa rather than fbdev or intel which I need to
investigate which is preventing this from happening now.

The other option for these cards is to use KMS + the fbdev driver².

There have been a couple of concerns raised about vesa:
  * Possibly less capable of proper suspend/resume than KMS.
  * Won't drive the display in the native mode for laptops with a
 poorly-written video bios.

fbdev+KMS will work where ever KMS works, and will set the native mode
where ever KMS sets the native mode. It is not capable of changing
 resolution, however.

I've been persuaded that fbdev+KMS will provide a better experience for
more people than kms-blacklist+vesa. This is a final call for comment
before I ask the kernel team to revert the blacklist for these cards and
flick the switch in xorg-server to use fbdev rather than intel.

 ¹: Bug #633593:

 https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/633593
²: This is similar in some respects to the upstream “Shadow branch”
 work.

This seems an acceptable resolution to me.

As of now this is pilot course that we are starting at St. Joseph College,
Bangalore and it is limited only for students from St. Joseph. However if
this pilot course is successful which we believe will be, then we are
planning to host such courses in other colleges and also open it for general
public whoever is interested.
Also we will be glad to accommodate any particular session which we have
missed out in syllabus and someone in this community wants to take it up to
students.

do you mean that the screensaver cuts in? if so just turn it off.
System-preferences-screensaver and turn it off or make the idle time
longer. You can also tell it not to lock the screen when the screensaver
is active, that way it won't ask for the password when you move the

Upgrading pkexec to run X11 Orca-accessible applications as root.

2010-09-12 Thread Bill Cox
I've patched pkexec which is like gksu, but uses Policy Kit for
authentication. The patch is very simple - all I had to do is
uncomment some code the author already had in there to enable X11
applications. It seems that the author decided that running X11
applications as root is just too much of a security hole to justify,
so he commented out the code. As a result, Ubuntu has to rely on gksu
to run programs like Synaptic from the System/Administration menu.

gksu has problems. It's no longer a simple sudo wrapper, and has
evolved into a multi-threaded monster of such complexity that good C
debuggers (I count myself as one) can't easily fix major problems.
gksu has a many-year outstanding bug where it hangs Gnome if
at-spi-registryd is running. I've spent hours trying to find the bug,
as have others. If gksu is so complex that we can't debug it, how can
we trust it? This is very likely a security risk vs just using
pkexec. If we already have sudo and pkexec, why do we need gksu? Why
maintain and trust all three?

I believe the answer to why we still have gksu is that we needed a way
to run Synaptic and other X11 programs as root from Gnome menus, and
from some Python programs. What we've done in Vinux is to replace
/usr/bin/gksu with a simple bash script that uses a zenity wrapper
around sudo. This works around the bug where gksu locks up gnome, but
it's literally an ugly hack - the zenity dialog box looks pathetic.
Good thing the blind don't mind! What I would like to suggest is that
Ubuntu consider moving away from gksu, and to pkexec instead, with the
simple patch to support X11 applications. I see no reason this path
would not allow us to eventually retire gksu. In Vinux, we could
replace /usr/bin/gksu with a wrapper to call pkexec. My guess is that
Ubuntu would more likely start replacing calls to gksu in the menus,
Ubiquity, and other places, with calls to pkexec, and leave the gksu
package alone.

What do you think? Is enhancing policykit to support X11 and moving
away from gksu the right direction? I think many Orca users would
love to dump gksu. I've attached my patch, which is compatible with
the source package use of quilt.

Thanks,
Bill

installing or reinstalling software on Nokia n82 and ubuntu

2010-09-12 Thread Michael Weaver
Can software such as Talks be installed or reinstalled on the Nokia N82
using Ubuntu and Orca?
I ask because I have been told that I may need to do a hard reset of my
phone because a few minutes after switching on my phone, apps are either
slow to open or don't open at all in the case of Galery as I have been
trying to find out how to take photos so maybe my parents might take
holiday pics of me.
I have been using Daisy2go as I have Talks Premium only I have
transfered Daisy Books onto my SD card via the USB cable this is when I
first noticed my phone appearing to be sluggish.
I deleted one of my three audio books after listening to it and I have
deleted the privacy information I may have stored on my phone while
surfing the web on it but I still get this sluggishness a few minutes
after I switch on my phone, the first couple of minutes or so it works
fine for some reason.
This is why I have been told I may need to do a hard reset and do some
kind of reinstall which is why I ask if this can be done in Ubuntu
similar to what I might do when transfering my Daisy books maybe.

From what I remember reading in a bug on GNOME bugzilla, gksu lacks a mainloop
which is a contributor to the issues that we have with accessibility.

There is also gksu-polkit, which at a glance, does the same thing, using
policykit, and is already in Ubuntu universe, and likely Debian as well. My
vote is that we should try gksu-polkit and see whether things are better or
worse, using it as a gksu replacement.

I've noticed that there's a couple of issues handling Album
 Artist,
which somone might be able to explain or perhaps a bug should be
 logged.

  1. When ripping a compilation, Banshee doesn't seem to fill in the
 Album
Artist field, dispite getting the information from MusicBrainz...
 this
means it creates multiple album icons, one for each track which is
  very anoying.

What version of Banshee are you using? I believe this was fixed in
 1.4.2.

  2. When switching from Rhythmbox, you will find the same problem,
because Rhythmbox stores it's Album Artist data in the ARTISTSORT
 field,
  not ALBUMARTIST.

Sounds like a Rhythmbox bug. I advise re-tagging such corrupted files
with Picard, which should fill in the various fields correctly.

Hi Ian,

(My intent with this message is to be polite and respectful in tone,
whilst disagreeing firmly and persuasively. My language often fails me
in this respect, so my apologies in advance if this is one of those
times... :-) )

I must confess a little perplexity on my part at what you're saying and
the motivations behind it. Here are a few questions that i hope will
help me to understand you better:

   * In what way are tech support threads not something of substance?
   * What matters would qualify as something of substance in your mind?
   * How does talking about technical issues show disorganisation?
   * I assume by bickering over Linux reboots you're referring to my
 reply to Ana on Saturday:

3. Personally, i don't find that a reboot fixes much with wireless
stuff on Linux, so i would use that as a last resort. In general,
you should only need to reboot Linux when there's a kernel update,
or certain other core software (update manager will tell you when
it's necessary).

How does this qualify as bickering? (Unless you are conflating
this with my teasing of Ryan on IRC - in which case, read the
   smilies a bit more...)

I would argue that technical support on a local forum is /exactly/ the
right place for it because:

   * *High-volume forums **are not newbie friendly*. I cannot
emphasise how important i feel this is. Having to wade through a
large quantity of unfamiliar jargon words in a high-volume forum
is likely to cause non-technical people who are making the switch
to Ubuntu to give up and go elsewhere quickly.
   * High-volume forums are also not friendly to experienced users.
Those of us who try to answer questions on limited time are more

likely to do so in an environment which does not require large
overheads in order to stay current. I can only speak for myself,
but at the moment i'm subscribed to about 30 different mailing
lists via gmane.org, about the same number of technical RSS feeds
in my feed reader, as well as visiting about 6-7 low-volume IRC
channels regularly. Between my regular clients (who keep me busy
for 4 work days per week) and those communication forums, my
technical bandwidth is pretty full. The problem is also
compounded for me by the fact that i'm a generalist and my time is
directed by my clients to their points of need, which can vary
from minute to minute. I realise that my experience is not
normative, but i'm sure it's fairly normal for a consultant
working with local SMBs (perhaps Dave Hall can comment further).
(I'm sure this logic would not apply to domain experts in

particular technologies, but they seem to be fairly thin on the
ground in Ubuntu-AU...) If i had to use high-volume lists
channels to make a contribution, my contributions would be far
less. (Not to mention that web-based forums like ubuntuforums.org
make me want to grind my teeth in frustration.)
   * Shared language, vocabulary, and local idioms mean that
communication breakdown is less likely in a local forum than an
international one. (It might be argued that the struggle of
expressing oneself in an international forum is worth the pain,
but i think the responsibility for that needs to fall with those
of us who are more experienced on the technical side of things,

Done, thanks for the heads up Matthew.

Does the list of current templates look ok now?

Considering they are short strings, translatable through language packs,
and assuming the fix can be uploaded straight away, I'd have no
objection unless it also implies documentation changes. In any case, I'd
 like to hear everyone's opinion.

No effect on documentation, as far as I can see, as gwibber isn't
mentioned in ubuntu-docs, nor does it appear to have its own help.

That's something we should work on for the next cycle.

AW: No sound without JACK

I'm using two Envy24 based Terratec EWX 24/96 PCI sound cards on amd64
  architecture, on-board sound is disabled.

 Check this:

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/178442

I did as comment #30 and it worked for me with a m-audio audiophile 2496
which also uses the alsa module snd-ice1712. The problem remains in
 ubuntustudio maverick alpha. See:

 http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntustudio-test...@lists.launchpad.net/msg00351.html

Thank you Pablo, it does solve this issue :).

I wonder what will happen, if I make my 2 Terratec EWX 24/96 cards 1 virtual
card, anyway, today I just tested to get 1 of the 2 cards ready to work.

I tested analog stereo for KMPLayer set up to use PA and the sound preferences
were set up to analog stereo output and simultaneous output for both cards,
while I just tested one of the cards, but the sound was ok :).

Anyway, before this test Movie Player crashed and there are issues for the
website of a friend, http://achimjaroschek.com/music.html, while sound was ok
for his YouTube channel, e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu6uFtCASYc.

Unfortunately there are still many issues and today there are some new issues.
I don't have those issues with 64 Studio 3.0 beta (Hardy) and 3.3 alpha
(Karmic) amd64.

I'm still in a production with recordings Achim and I made, so there's no time
to fix Ubuntu Studio right now. I'm doing the production using 64 Studio 3.3
alpha and even if the software works without issues, it's still tricky and time
consuming and there always is the risk of a crash, so I can't use Linux for
recording Achim and friends or other serious musicians who are short in time,
only if there's a lot of time, it can be used for post processing. IMO for
Ubuntu Studio it would help to remove desktop stuff like PA from the distro.

This and next month Achim does some concerts in Germany,
http://achimjaroschek.com/, certainly I'll be at the concerts in the Ruhrgebiet.

The next 6 month I'll do a job with elementary school kids, but professional
musicians, it might be that Linux could be more interesting then.

  2. Does anybody know how to add libflashsupport-jack? Compiling and
installing seems to be ok, I guess there's an issue regarding to set up
  everything correctly.
I am not sure. I am checking this post and comments:

 http://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=4t=2323st=0sk=tsd=ahilit=flash+player

Please, let us know if you solve this.

Again, thank you :). If I should have more time, I'll continue and let you know
what happened.

To be continued

You need to run 'sudo usermod... ' or 'sudo -i' and then 'usermod...'
and IIRC then you need to log out and log in again, perhaps it's written
somewhere, maybe here, didn't read it completely:
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-linux-add-user-to-group/. Or start
jackd without realtime mode, run 'jackd --help', for older versions you
need to drop the '-R' switch, but for the current version you need a
switch to disable realtime mode.

Abra o terminal e veja a nova cara dele, se quiser esconder a janelinha

Quando você quiser abrir o terminal numa determinada pasta, você vai

Instale o script, reinicie o Nautilus:

[Ubuntu-BR] [OT - INFO] Broadcom Abre Código de Driver Wireless

2010-09-12 Thread RDA

gambiarra.

Existe alguma correção para tal comportamento ?

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Wireless Broadcom no ubuntu 10.04

2010-09-12 Thread Leonardo Castro
Faissal,

então simplesmente apt-get install b43-fwcutter), para extrair o firmware,
hardware).

 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:flozz/flozz sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get install nautilus-terminal
 nautilus -q

2010-09-12 Thread Alan Holt

Ctrl+D, Ctrl+R,
Delete, Ctrl+C,

[Bug 636195] [NEW] Autofs for LDAP doesn't contain ldif file

2010-09-12 Thread infestator
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autofs5-ldap

Configuration of slapd is directory based and ldapadd is not able to add
'.schema' files to LDAP configuration tree. To find out the way I can
add schema file into LDAP I wasted a lot of time for googleing. I think
it is not a very big problem and not a lot of work to add autofs.ldif
file to autofs5-ldap package to be able quickly setup LDAP for it
without additional googleing for special scripts.

I supplied autofs.ldif file in attachment.

Thanks!

[Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)

2010-09-12 Thread Jan Lillelund
This is still a big issue on WiFi-enabled workstations. To put it into
perspective, we have upgraded from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS and shutdown
still takes around 40 minutes for the 16 cifs mounts in FSTAB on four
workstations. Users are seriously inconvenienced.

As hinted earlier, a workaround could be adding the K14-links to rc0.d
and rc6.d:

ln -s /etc/init.d/umountnfs.sh /etc/rc0.d/K14umountnfs.sh
ln -s /etc/init.d/umountnfs.sh /etc/rc6.d/K14umountnfs.sh

and deleting the equivalent S31umountnfs.sh link.

I see this as a stop-gap measure only until it has been fully tested and
verified.

However, as Max-Ulrich Farber also stated more than two years ago, the
full ramifications of this are not clear as I do not have the test cases
nor insight for that matter to determine that this does not adversely
affect something else.

Could someone please please take a look at this and have the issue
resolved. This is not just an obscure technical issue but also affects
the image that ordinary mortal users have of Ubuntu.

[Bug 636363] [NEW] After importing backend.ldif I get Invalid credentials (49)

2010-09-12 Thread Zaphod
Public bug reported:

So I was trying to document configuring a new OpenLDAP install in
Maverick but I ran into problems pretty quick. After I import my
backend.ldif file I am unable to import the front end because of the
error Invalid credentials (49).

Here is what I did. I can't see any mistakes so far:

sudo apt-get install slapd ldap-utils

load some additional schema files

sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/cosine.ldif
sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/nis.ldif

create a file called backend.lan.local.ldif

load it into the LDAP

[Bug 633981] Re: apache2 does not listen on ipv6 at all when there is no routable IPv6 address

2010-09-12 Thread Stefan Fritsch
It seems reasonable to not listen on IPv6 if no v6 address is
configured. Unfortunately, Apache (or rather APR) does this by using
getaddrinfo's AI_ADDRCONFIG flag. And glibc seems to ignore IPv6
addresses of scope host (i.e. ::1) when deciding if an v6 address is
configured. For me, the default fe80::* address of scope link that is
configured on eth0 is enough to make getaddrinfo return v6 addresses. If
I delete that address, getaddressinfo returns only the v4 address.

So, this looks more like a problem of eglibc than apache/APR to me.

[Bug 631064] Re: connection forbidden on localhost after wireless connected

2010-09-12 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Thanks for checking, Gerben.

Maybe this is related to bug #633981: Can you please check in the output
of

ip a

before and after wireless is connected. Are there any inet6 addresses besides
the loop-back entry inet6 ::1/128 scope host?
Do you use network manager for connecting to the wireless? Maybe some versions
of network manager delete an existing IPv6 address when it creates the wireless
connection.

[Bug 611226] Re: Dovecot-common Install Error

2010-09-12 Thread Bill Mills
I also had this issue. I saw a good number of questions but no answers
so I am linking to my resolution in the forum.

http://newyork.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9839614#post9839614

It may not be a bug but hostname -f is definitely picker in 10.04 than
it was in 9.10. I duplicated the same config in both (via a script
using the official cononical EC2 AMIs for each) and the simple setup
works in 9.10 and not in 10.04. editing /etc/hosts and
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf gets me to a working solution in 10.04.
