However, in general, for gone-dead forums with lots of information I prefer them to be closed, but available with sticky posts or notices, since useful information can be googled up. It is a drawback of forums (compared to e.g. mailing lists) that the hoster or forum administrators deletes them or the site goes down and everything is lost (now I am really digressing). Then under /Draft you will find https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SwissTeam/Ideas/SwissPortal/Draft Just a side note. It's not about translating the wiki or complete parts of it into other languages. It's more about offering a entry point in German, French and Italian. On the main page, I would like to have some kind of 'Icons' (which Gregor would like to prepar) pointing to these pages. I am going to note down a few sentences in order to be translated for these pages and would be glad if you could add your ideas. I had it on Maverick and have it on Natty as well. There's a problem with it with 64-bit. It installs with 32-bit only. If the open doc formats were enforced by govt - it would help to level the playing field and it would be easier for larger organisations to start a switch to open source in front offices. Microsoft have embedded themselves in the schools/ university networks. Spending a massive amount of resources in maintaining a presence in these organisations. However many of the schools and universities are still using XP, largely because of the cost of upgrading. In the current economic climate they are certainly interested in at least benchmarking Ubuntu with Win 7. I know of one Uni seriously considering switching from Sage Quicken to GnuCash as well as to Gimp from Adobe Photoshop. With the biggest source of resistance being Sys Admins qualified in Windows networks. Its also worth remembering that in most schools / universities they are still not aware of the higher usability of Ubuntu for early users. I'm not sure if this is correct English, I tried to say, that an engineer is able to use some distros, but e.g. not Ubuntu Studio anymore, because it's different to other Linux. In error my thought was, that Ubuntu does it different to all other distros. Soon or later GNOME2 will be dropped by every distro, so OTOH to stick with GNOME2 libs might cause the situation I fear and not as I thought before, to drop GNOME2 libs. I came across one of those pre-paid modems on a work colleagues computer the other day. To get it working in a loan computer it had to be 'activated' wich is something I don't see in the business versions of the modems. Might be something to look at. Also as a note, we have been testing the Telstra Elite Mifi modems and they are awesome. They are only $129 from Telstra shop at the moment and as they use wifi to connect locally they are easy to get working everywhere. Plud you can move them around the house for best signal strength. Hi All, Yes, Telstra MiFi is a good option, as is Vodafone's Pocket Wifi (basically the same thing). Another awesome option, same as above but supplied by an independent vendor, is the Netcomm 3G range of products - http://www.netcomm.com.au/products/3g I bought the 3GT1WN about a year ago, I bought this as we were visiting a relative in country Victoria and I had my 3G USB stick on the laptop but the missus wanted to use her iPad too. So $165 from OfficeWorks, it's got a USB port on the side so I just plugged the stick in, configured the 'APN' within the device and the rest just works. Of course Optus coverage where I was (Clunes) is a bit crap, but from a technical note it worked OK. Netcomm has another one too, that used to be $250 now it's cheaper, http://myzone.netcomm.com.au/, the difference being you don't plug your stick in, you put the SIM directly inside. The selling point of the 3GT1WN for me was that it just takes a stick, which means if I go somewhere with just my laptop I can just take my stick, I don't need to swap SIM cards etc. Also, because it uses a stick, it's easy to connect an external aerial in areas of poor coverage. The MyZone which takes the SIM directly of course can't take an external aerial (but if you're not planning on using the device in regional areas, this makes no difference to you). Hope this helps! In my experience if you have anything less than 50% signal strength your ability to use 3G can be seriously compromised, or non-existent. I have an Optus PAYG SIM that I use in a USB 3G modem (Huawei E160E) and also inserted directly into my Eee PC. The Huawei gives a LED indication of when 3G is active (Blue) or if it has had to downtrain to GPRS due to poor signal strength/bandwith. At home, it's very rare to get full 3G connection and speed during busy times - after 3.30PM on weekdays and on Sunday afternoon, that sort of thing. At other times it can be blindingly fast if I do manage to get a 3G connection such as at 2AM. So, my ability to use the Optus 3G network can vary from completely unusable (similar to what you are seeing) to blindingly fast. Fortunately I got the 3G wireless to get internet while traveling and have a wired connection for home use which keeps the frustration to a minimum. The Optus 3G seems to work very well in most towns I go to. To test the 3G modem you need to take it to a place where there's excellent signal strength. If it works there (and it should) but not at your friend's place then you have a 3G coverage issue. You should be able to get your money back on the spend is the product is not suitable for the intended location. Mas nas versões recentes do GNOME 10.10 e 11.04, o F2 simplesmente marca o nome inteiro do arquivo. Alguem na lista já descobriu como faz para reverter essa situação, isto é, voltar a selecionar apenas a porção do nome do arquivo ? Essas instalações foram básicas sem acréscimos de programas ou modificações no sistema. Achei esse problema no buglist do Ubuntu : https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=627110 Parece se tratar de um bug quando usamos o modo list mode do nautilus, o qual é o meu preferido por dar mais detalhes do arquivo. Quem lista arquivos no modo ícone aparentemente não é afetado pelo problema (eu mesmo testei aqui). Vou te falar, parece um bug proposital, aparentemente só foi corrigido no 11.10 que ainda nem existe. Legal, até a 11.10 fico sem correção. No meu Natty (instalado limpo), em qualquer uma das três opções de visualização do Nautilus só me marca para alteração o nome do arquivo, deixando sempre a mesma extensão. Boa tarde, galera! Estou com o Ubuntu 10.10 no meu netbook e de repente o Empathy parou de conectar. E ele não conectar em nenhuma das 3 contas que tenho configuradas nele. Já deletei e reconfigurei cada uma um milhão de vezes e fiquei sem idéia. Será isso pode ser algum problema no meu Ubuntu? Estou numa internet aberta (digo sem proxy) e o Gwibber funciona numa boa. Alguem ai já passou por algo assim? É isso q está me deixando sem saber por onde começar, ele simplesmente não conecta. Não mostra nenhuma mensagem de erro. Aí pensando ser algum problema do Empathy eu testei o aMSN, o Pidgin e o Kopete e todos deram o mesmo problema, não conectaram as contas, mas tbm não deram nenhuma mensagem de erro. Estou com o Ubuntu 10.10 no meu netbook e de repente o Empathy parou de conectar. E ele não conectar em nenhuma das 3 contas que tenho configuradas nele. Já deletei e reconfigurei cada uma um milhão de vezes e fiquei sem idéia. Será isso pode ser algum problema no meu Ubuntu? Estou numa internet aberta (digo sem proxy) e o Gwibber funciona numa boa. Alguem ai já passou por algo assim? Aqui funciona de boa...normalmente quando ligo o note, abro o mensageiro, as contas de transmissão (twitter e facebook), Firefox (com gmail e reader abertos), thunderbird, terminator e nautilus. Todos funcionam sem problemas...Tenho contas no mensageiro do gtalk, Hotmail, yahoo e ICQ. Isso era bom porque raramente pretendia alterar a extensão também. Mas nas versões recentes do GNOME 10.10 e 11.04, o F2 simplesmente marca o nome inteiro do arquivo. [Ubuntu-be] Joining the webteam and helping out
Hi guys, I want to join in on the web editors team if that would be possible and start to contribute/participate to Ubuntu-be. I hope that i can help you out in some way and that you could show me the way things are done. I believe once i found the way how it all works, it's going to be a piece of cake. Since i joined the Ubuntu-be team a month ago i still haven't been really active actually, trying to find my place where i fit in the best. Maybe this is a good start.
