Re: [Ubuntu-QC] Besoin de soutien dans le bas-du-fleuve!

2011-07-03 Thread Burcadus

2011-07-03 Thread Bruno Girin

Has anybody else been following this series? What are your thoughts?

I've been reading some of it. I think he makes a number of a good points
but he also has the tendency to assume things will be complicated and
therefore goes for the complicated option first. The way he initially
installed WINE or the way he manually created a separate partition under
Windows in order to install Ubuntu side by side is another.

It may be worth promoting the software centre more and position it as
being similar to an 'app store'. Linux users have been used to this for
ages so don't think about it anymore but for the larger population the
concept of the app store is new and they don't expect a desktop OS to
behave that way.

hmm, good idea perhaps when people click on synaptic it could come up
with a dialogue box explaining software centre and suggest using that to
install packages instead,

This should be one time only non intrusive and perhaps have a click box
saying do not display again.

I don't want ubuntu to end up like windows with endless boxes popping up
but we can help people a little and be less intrusive in the process.

just a thought,

+1

Personally, when I give help to people these days, which requires the
installation of a new package, I always point them to Ubuntu Software
Centre, if I know it is there.

I haven't used Synaptic now for ages. If USC hasn't got it, I go
straight for apt-get.

The only thing I would like in USC is a more verbose mode to show what
is happening during installation - maybe something like the download and
console display in Update Manager.

Actually I'm in two minds, I don't like Facebook much but it does have the

 know
use it (technically I have a Hi5 account because I was trying to get in
 touch
with someone who used it and not Facebook, but it isn't a nice service and
 I'd
rather they'd been on Facebook!). In theory Google should be able to use
 it's

 Picassa
for photo sharing could give it an edge in flexibility (and instant user
 base).

Diaspora*, if it ever gets going, will likely be much like Identica,
 preferred
by techies, but always the also ran to Twitter purely on user base.

Somebody ought to do a mashup that combines something like Identica,
 Wordpress,
IMAP mail with webmail, Gallery, Jabber or etc. using RSS / Planet so the
 actual
service being used for each contact is largely irrelevant. Then it
 wouldn't
matter what blogging, instant messaging, picture sharing, 'tweeting'
 services
 were used.

I have looked in occasionally. I decided early on that he is a well
established Windows user and the series is a slightly veiled long
drawn out winge about how difficult Ubuntu can be made to seem. The
few items of praise he offers are almost half hearted.

It is unrealistic in that all of the Ubuntu users I help did not have
to install Ubuntu at all, just like before that they did not have to
install Windows either.

People like myself, who did install Ubuntu on my own, learned a bit
about 'partitions' and act as my own administrator, are seen as total
experts by people that I help (!), and I certainly have never used
'grep', which is one of the two commands he says he had to use. I
avoid cl like a dose of 'flu, and I get by very well thank you.

The good news is that it does keep Ubuntu in people's sight, in
creases visibility, and it saves me a lot of effort trying to let
others know it really exists..

The elephant in the room is that he bought a machine pre installed
with Windows, and so did most other people in the world. And
preinstalled Ubuntu machines, if you can arrange to get one, are a
dream compared with windows land.

When MS were moving in on the well established Wordperfect installed

at (me) the new Word user. In fact I was forced into Word away from WP
because of employer's policy, and I became very aware of the
targetted help.

Ubuntu's new approach is unashamedly inspired by 'best of' MAC and Win
stuff and because the large target population is using windows, and
most will need a little help, I think it would be a good strategy to
let it speak windows world language. Maybe with a 'turn off' option.

blobs, since the HD recording must have drm as a requirement for it to be
certified. Which is a shame, check out http://hummy.tv for help, tips and

Has anybody else been following this series? What are your thoughts?

Just to illustrate the background of this reviewer (Tony Bradley, PCWorld)

 http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/234994/30_days_with_the_ipad.html

I mean giving up the Windows 7 OS that I love--again. In case you're
just joining us, I just got done spending 30 Days With Ubuntu Linux. I
was looking forward to getting back to Windows, but...

I read the first few days of the series then lost interest, but
reminded of it by this thread, I have just read them all.

The most interesting thing, for me, is in his summing-up.

#3 most-liked feature of Ubuntu?

Unity.

Yep it wouldn't surprise of if it's based on Linux. In fact I gather

some Bluray players and media player devices). Not so sure about the
branded stuff (Philips, LG, Sony etc) but I know some of the cheaper

It won't update as there is nothing newer in any repository that you
have in your sources.list Installing an Oneiric kernel on Maverick is
quite an unsupported thing to do. (that is a whole release apart
skipping over Natty) I am not sure what you want to update. I don't
quite understand why you are connecting to the machine with SSH,
presumably it is local to you as you can see the backlight isn't on.
That bug doesn't seem to be about the backlight specifically, I am a bit
confused about the whole situation to be honest, I expect others are
too. Maybe try running Natty instead of Maverick, it might support your
hardware better, or file a bug that details the backlight issue.

My thoughts are that on the whole the series was interesting, however I
was generally disappointed by the reviewer. He intended to spend each
day with a different feature of the OS but he seemed incapable of
spending half an hour on Google to do basic research. He seemed to give
up very easily when things didn't go exactly as he wanted. For example
he condemned GNUCash for the wizard not offering the option to import
Quicken files, it was pointed out by GNUCash users that this option is
available in FileImport. He (or more correctly his wife) also condemned
GIMP for not having an 'Eye Dropper' tool when this icon is clearly
there on the Tools menu box. It was sloppy journalism.

He made no secret that he was a die hard MS fan. This did seem to
blinker him to home truths that self evident to other windows users,
such as Windows does not 'Just Work' as he repeatedly maintained. He
kept mentioning the effort needed to learn a new way of working as being
a problem. Has must have forgotten the culture shock of jumping from
Office 2003 to Office 2010, or WinXP to Win7. I know this first hand as
my employer is doing both changes this year and the negative effect on
productivity for some people is quite marked: one colleague spent 20
minutes trying to find a formatting option in Word2010 that he would
have done in 30 seconds in the previous version of Office. At home my
wife prefers Ubuntu over Win7 precisely because the learning curve is
much smaller when coming from WinXP.

For a technology professional his understanding of the different
concepts was quite poor at times. He repeatedly laboured the short
comings of the default software while completely ignoring the fact that
the Ubuntu ISO file is a master piece of packaging at 650Mb: a Win7
installation disc can be approx 3GB without the office suite, depending
upon version. On the other hand he did give credit where it was due for
features such as security and the software centre.

Overall a good example of the reaction of a windows user who is happy
with what he's got and has no real interest in changing.

Its a long story, which is complicated and I dont understand why it was
installed either, but there we are. popey knows, he tried to help, and
connected to my laptop, to see if he could get the backlight to turn on,
and it wont. I thought, I could possibly update, if there was anything
to update. To see if anything had been done to get the backlight to turn
on. I tried running Natty, which is how I found out about this problem.
the backlight wont turn on. It seems to be a big problem with Natty and
quite a few computers. Unless this is sorted, I wont be able to update,
which means I only have about 18 months to use this pc with 10.10. Hope
that helps.

[ubuntu-uk] Help needed finding my bluetooth on my new laptop

2011-07-03 Thread Jon Spriggs
(and no, it isn't down the back of the sofa)

So, here's the thing, I bought one of these:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/265218

I've received it, and installed Ubuntu 11.04 on there (yes, even with
Unity) and it's lovely. Everything I wanted it for works a treat -
Wifi's great, battery life, about what I was expecting (but I've not
really pushed it, so I don't know for sure) and the video is great -
1366x768.

Anyway, when I unboxed it, I noticed the Function feature for F12
shows an antenna symbol and the letters BT. As a geek, I'd not
bothered to look at the paperwork which came with it, but it clearly
says there All models, while they may have dissimilar colouring or
placement of features, all include the same hardware... and later
says bluetooth.

I crack open a terminal, to run hcitool dev... and it says
Devices:... and then nothing. Hmm, I think, maybe it's not switched
on by default (which, bluetooth really shouldn't be), so I toggle the
feature, and check it again - still nothing.

lspci gives me the following:

As the Ebuyer spec doesn't mention it, then you probably don't have it
available. Contrast this with my EEEPC where the spec said it had
bluetooth and when I installed Ubuntu on it, the bleutooth icon was
there next to the network icon (and it works!).

I have googled for something and found at least one reference to a
laptop with this chip that had a Broadcom bluetooth chip as well -
hardly needed if the RTL8191SEvB would do the job on its own.

Language chooser at login

2011-07-03 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I have discussed briefly with a couple of developers whether there
should be a language chooser on the login screen, and we believe it's a
suitable topic for this list.

The background is that GDM has provided a language chooser for a long
time, but GNOME has (for unclear reasons) dropped it in GDM 3, which
will be an available display manager in Oneiric. LightDM, which will be
the default dm in Oneiric, had a language chooser in the Natty version,
but in the latest versions it has been disabled.

I'm of the opinion that we should keep providing a language chooser
widget on the login screen, either in the greeter or on the top panel.
Before giving the reasons for my view, I'd like to clarify which kind of
language chooser it is that I advocate.

In short, I'd like it to work as it currently does in Natty. Unlike
before, when there was a plain locale chooser that didn't play well with
the Lucid and Maverick versions of language-selector, in Natty GDM's
language chooser

- has a list whose options represent available translations (which in
some languages, such as English and Spanish, means a significantly
shorter list than before),

- persistently changes the user language, and

- is well synchronized with language-selector.

Over to my arguments:

If you change the display language within a session, it does not take
effect in that session, but only after you have logged out and logged in
again. The language setting is one of the few things that works that way.

Those who typically make use of the language chooser on the login screen
are reasonably users who alter between two or more display languages.
Maybe that group is a small share of the Ubuntu users, but to them it's
much more convenient to be able to set the language before logging in,
compared to logging in, opening language-selector, changing the
language, logging out and then logging in again.

Future growth of Ubuntu users will probably be higher outside the
English speaking countries than the average growth, so both the number
and percentage of multi-lingual users, and consequently also the group
that appreciate an opportunity to change language at login, ought to
increase.

From an Ubuntu user perspective, the question isn't if we should add a
language chooser to the login screen, but the question is whether it
would be a good idea to remove the feature. Is there any disadvantage
with it worth mentioning for those who don't use it? Has anybody
complained of its pure existence? ;-)

i18n is a key point in the Ubuntu philosophy, and the relative
importance of i18n matters in general is growing. In the light of that,
I think that removing the language chooser from the login screen would
send the wrong signals to prospective Ubuntu users.

So let's not do so, please. :)

Re: Language chooser at login

2011-07-03 Thread Robert Ancell
I've cc'd in Mika and John, who worked on the design of the new greeter
(not the greeter that is currently delivered with Oneiric) and Charline
who does user testing as they will probably have good opinions on this
feature.
I'm of the opinion that we should keep providing a language chooser
widget on the login screen, either in the greeter or on the top panel.
Before giving the reasons for my view, I'd like to clarify which kind of
language chooser it is that I advocate.
This seems to be completely the opposite way we should tackle this. We
need to know what requirements the user has for language support, and
this will determine what GUI elements are appropriate to achieve this.
If you change the display language within a session, it does not take
effect in that session, but only after you have logged out and logged in
again. The language setting is one of the few things that works that way.
Yes, it's an unfortunate limitation of the system we use.
Can you provide some examples of these types of users, and why/how they
currently switch language?

From what I've gathered talking to people the classes of user are:
1. Users who set the system language at install/first boot time, and
never change it (the vast majority)
2. English as a second language users, who switch between their native
language and English (this is a class of user I don't understand well).
I think the reason for this is because the translations are not always
good enough? Is this a power user feature?
3. Testers/developers who want to easily change language for testing
(their requirements should not be exposed to normal users)

I haven't heard of any standard user requirements to switch between more
than two languages, or two languages that do not include English (please
post here if you know of any).
Future growth of Ubuntu users will probably be higher outside the
English speaking countries than the average growth, so both the number
and percentage of multi-lingual users, and consequently also the group
that appreciate an opportunity to change language at login, ought to
 increase.
And I'd expect these users to use their preferred language and not need
to change it at all. We need to work out what the group that
appreciate an opportunity to change language at login are trying to
achieve. The multi-lingual users I've talked to do not change their
language settings frequently.
From an Ubuntu user perspective, the question isn't if we should add a
language chooser to the login screen, but the question is whether it
would be a good idea to remove the feature. Is there any disadvantage
with it worth mentioning for those who don't use it? Has anybody
complained of its pure existence? ;-)
Users who don't use this feature are not going to miss it. Users who do
need to be able to achieve the functionality they had before, but not
necessarily using the same method.

There are disadvantages to keeping this feature:
- This feature is quite complex to support.
- By having this feature both in the login screen and in the control
center we are duplicating functionality but providing an inconsistent
method of configuring it.
- Users can accidentally change it, giving an opportunity to make their
session unusable.

I'm not saying don't use it, i'm just saying that if you use Flash-Aid,

Re: changing to debian?

2011-07-03 Thread Ralf Mardorf
Hi :)

I 'switched' to Debian, but kept Ubuntu Studio, in other words, my
machine is a multi-boot Linux computer.

well, i'm using ubuntu for 4 years now. but i finally have enough of
it. i'm tiered of updating a hole system after half a year.

Stay at an 'outdated version' as long as it fit to your needs.

i know, that can be helpfull, but its also annoying. and the change to
unity clearly showed me, that its going into a bad direction, which is
not any more focused on the users. in my eyes.

Full ACK! I don't have the time to add a list with pros and cons, so the
short version. Doing a minimal install of a mixed Debian stable and
testing comes with many advantages compared to Ubuntu Studio, but it
also has got a big disadvantage, nothing can be done automatically, you
even need to know what packages to install, to get the printer working,
while for Ubuntu Studio you just need to open a GUI. For Debian there
e.g. is a startup script that switches CPU frequency scaling always to
ondemand, if you aren't aware of 'things' like this, then you'll
experience a lot of bad surprises. Regarding to my NVIDI graphics I need
a mix of stable (for the graphics) and testing (for current apps), this
wouldn't be an issue if pinning would work as it should do, but it
doesn't. I always need to check if everything is correct, before I
upgrade packages.
Again, full ACK, but unfortunately it's the same for Debian. There are
pros and cons for both distros.

i probably will stay with Ubuntu studio for music production, but for
my daily work, i defenitly will change to debian (testing).
Unfortunately i'm not smart enough to compile a real-time-kernl by
myself. Thats why i have to stay with 10.04 for my studio distro.

As soon as I've got some time, I can write a howto compile a kernel ex
2.6.39 and how to enable 'rt emulation'. It's the same way for Ubuntu
and Debian.

FWIW, I attached the scripts I used to build my Debian kernels. To get
the 2.6.39 emulation work, you also need to edit GRUB and note, ALSA for
the kernel-rt is outdated, you might need to compile ALSA too.

No painel inferior, consta a mensagem: rede habilitada.

[Ubuntu-BR] Botões do painel inferior

2011-07-03 Thread Luciano de Souza

Caros,

1. Fazer: ping [ip de um dos DNSs;
2. Desabilitar a conexão existente;
3. Ligar para o provedor solicitando os dados de configuração;
4. Configurar outra conexão no Netwok Manager.

Não estou muito esperançoso. Em minha máquina, tive dificuldades para
configurar.

No painel inferior, consta a mensagem: rede habilitada. Então, pensei que
o problema poderia estar circunscrito ao Firefox, então, fi-lo abrir o
terminal e baixar um pacote com apt-get. Não funcionou. Tentamos baixar

No Linux

A partir daí, duas

tudo esteja funcionando perfeitamente.

Emendas mal feitas centelham,
causando ruido na linha e derrubando o sinal DSL;

que ter um micro filtro ligados à linha telefônica;

falha da companhia telefônica (desde que os itens 1 e 2 estejam OK);

http://coringao.wordpress.com/2010/11/07/configurando-modem-ubuntu/

A dificuldade é voce

perfmissoes as pastas superiores

 1. Fazer: ping [ip de um dos DNSs;
 2. Desabilitar a conexão existente;
 3. Ligar para o provedor solicitando os dados de configuração;
 4. Configurar outra conexão no Netwok Manager.

Procure não conjecturar as coisas. Digite no terminal: ping 8.8.8.8

Luciano:

a) Eventualmente o firefox entra em modo *off-line*
b) Verifique o *modem*, estou entendendo que o internet eh ADSL convencional.

No proprio Firefox digite o endereco do *modem*.
http://10.0.0.1 ou http:192.168.1.1, vai depender do modelo do modem.

Entrando no modem, deve pedir *login e senha* do administrador **do modem**.

*nao* precisar usar discador.

executável e aí então executar no console. É fácil, só basta saber o que
fazer.

Muito bom. Enviei para ele o resultado do meu ping. Se for algo similar,

Ok. Mas não precisa defini-la tecnicamente. Basta você abrir as informações

Nesse
caso, force o DNS da conexão em 8.8.8.8 e 8.8.4.4 (Google) ou 208.67.220.220
e 208.67.222.222 (OpenDNS), nas configurações da conexão.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Flyers have arrived. (Jurgen Gaeremyn)

2011-07-03 Thread bram kortleven
Hi Jurgen,

You can send me a bunch, for the event box for Antwerpen.
In september, we'll be setting up a booth at the Dipro Computer Fair again...

I think (for now) 400 to 500 will do just fine... I don't have a clue how many
fairs we'll be present at... As far as I know, 3 times between september and
june...

Address:
Bram Kortleven
Juul Grietensstraat 2
2140 Borgerhout

Thanks!

Hi,

The 5.000 flyers are printed.
Can someone please tell me where to send how many?
I don't feel like sending flyers to the same person 5 times in a year -
so please plan wisely (and rather ask a little more)

Who needs to get flyers:
- - all the Dipro event teams (same person who is maintaining the Event
box?)
- - people planning to organize an install party
- - people wanting to organize something for Software Freedom day (even if
it's only giving away flyers at the school gate)
- - people who just can't shut up about Ubuntu, and want to give people a
souvenir...

So if you're one of these: please send me a message. (shipments per
multiples of 100 - won't be exact). So your order 100, 200, 500, 1000
(or more if you really think you need more).
Obviously, I can't ship more than I have and large numbers might get less.

Please give a short explanation of the usage in your mail.

Grtz,
Jurgen.

PS. As the EPSFUG will confirm: we all need a PGP-key! Get yours now
(it's easy to generate). This mail is signed with mine. So if you know
me, sign my key. :)

Hi Jurgen,

i could do with 100 flyers, if this is possible.
There's voidcon in a week or 2 and i'm the kind of person who doesn't
shut up about Ubuntu, so i'll have no problem handing them out to people
who are still in the dark, waiting to be liberated.^^

So if it's possible, send them this way:

Thx in advance!!

2011-07-03 Thread Ward De Ridder
You can also bring them to voidcon / the ubuntu braai, I will most
likely go to the dipro in antwerp, and if I don't get there I can put
it in bram's mailbox.

That saves postal costs.

2011-07-03 Thread Maik Adamietz
Beste,

[Bug 805002] [NEW] Windows that appear to be maximized behave strangely

2011-07-03 Thread Fibonacci
Public bug reported:

Randomly, when opening a window that's supposed to be maximized, it will behave
strangely.
The title bar will be a bit off to one side, and even though the window is the
right size, the button on the title bar appears to be for maximizing - not
demaximizing.
When clicking anywhere on said title bar, it is the window behind that which
will get the click. This is of course especially bad when trying to close it,
because it is the window behind it which will be closed (if it's also
maximized).

Bringing some other window to the foreground and then the offending
window again will solve the problem for THAT window, but will not
prevent it from happening again.

[Bug 494082] Re: no Trash folder for root user

2011-07-03 Thread MestreLion
I've also noticed this in both 10.04 Lucid and 10.10 Maverick.

The root user HAS a trash folder (at /root/.local/share/Trash), with the
info and files subfolders.

The problem is.. clicking trash at Nautilus (as root) gives the error
Sorry, could not display all the contents of trash: Operation not
supported as informed by the OP.

So root user has a trash, the deleted files are there, but Nautilus can
not access it. Root can not restore the files or clean the trash the
same way a normal user can. Nautilus implementation of trash is broken
for the root user.

Print Dialog does not allow editing of page parameters

Status in “gtk+2.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: cups-pdf

  In Ubuntu-jaunty amd64,

Cups PDF driver does not allow us to change the paper size,
orientation, or anything. I would like to print my images from GIMP
to pdf, but they are wider than an A4 page, and so I cannot print them
to a whole pdf! I know PDF format can support multiple sizes. And
the options are there, just greyed out.

This is non-application specific. Firefox print dialog behaves the
same. OOo Print dialog doesn't even show the Cups PDF driver.

If those options are there, but are just greyed out, I would consider
this a problem. If the options have not been implemented, perhaps put
up a notice on that tab saying that they don't exist?

I hope whoever fixes this gets paid for it! Thanks for the awesome
  work!

[Bug 805013] [NEW] Network Manager unable to connect after anything changes in BIOS

2011-07-03 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
Public bug reported:

When I change the 1st boot device in BIOS, this always happens. Then I
need to enable LAN boot (which is useless for me otherwise) and it
starts working again. But today it didn't, so I just created a new wired
connection in Network Manager and whoala, I had internet again. Which
means that the problem is not in BIOS, as I had thought. By no
connection I mean that I receive an IP address, but no data comes
through.

I have an EeePC 1000H with the original BIOS (came with WinXP)

[Bug 777528] Re: ioctl DVD_READ_STRUCT fails for DVD_STRUCT_MANUFACT, causing some games to not detect their dvd?

2011-07-03 Thread Igbaäl
Have you filed a bug upstream ?
I'm looking forward to seeing this bug fixed as it would make lots of people
able to run their games 'out-of-the-box' (i.e. without no-cd patch).

But be warned : linus hates changing values that worked for years by
some magical ones.
