Hi Josh, and first and foremost, a warm welcome to Ubuntu! :-)

If you want to make use of your expertise in databases, here are a few
 things you could do:

 1) Go to answers.launchpad.net for your particular database, and look for
questions that you could possibly answer.

 2) You can also triage bugs for that database. (
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/**HowToTriagehttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage)
Given you have some programming expertise, you might also be able to fix
 some of the bugs?

 3) Make or improve Ensemble recipes for setting up your database easy in
 Ubuntu.( https://ensemble.ubuntu.com/ )

Hopefully some of the above will fall into your taste :-)

The basic philosophy of Linux (Linus Torvalds thank you again!) is very
much in my lifestyle everyday. Former professor of mathematics at the

distribution (I think). Since I participate in different forums and this
year I decided to get involved in the process of creating a new version
of Ubuntu.

Thank you to all those who enable this exciting project which offers a
Linux alternative against the non-free and its tentacles!

[ubuntu-in] Debdelta and localepurge issue

2011-08-31 Thread Narendra Diwate
Hi

I use Debian Testing (in Mint LMDE avatar) as my main OS and as i currently
have a very slow connection, I would appreciate help on this issue. I use
debdelta to update/upgrade and normally do this using apt-get from the
command line. Now while debdelta is very usefull and reduces the download
size significantly, it somehow can't get around the absence of quite a few
locale filess that I removed using localepurge. Also I am unaware of how I
can create a download list like I can when using synaptic (so that i can use
another computer to download the packages) that does not include the
packages already created by debdelta.
So please help me with 2 things:

1. How to use debdelta and avoid having packages not created because of
missing locale files. Is there a work around or is it an either (debdelta)
or (localepurge) case?

2. How to create a package download script from the command line (apt-get)
that won't include the packages already existing/created using debdelta? I
think synaptic includes those already present? Correct me if I am wrong.

[ubuntu-in] How to record live video stream on Ubuntu

2011-08-31 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Hi

have been trying to figure out how to record a live video stream on Ubuntu.

Examples of some sites are
http://live.indiatimes.com/

http://www.ndtv.com/video/live/channel/ndtv24x7

seems like mplayer and vlc can do the job but the latter requires
defining a capture card and am not sure the former really does the job
required when the url is encoded (as in the examples

mplayer is cli , based, not a bad thing but having access to a gui
interface would also be nice

**
googled and found this
http://code.google.com/p/freetuxtv/wiki/HomePage?wl=en

and on request they tried to add the links but unfortunately it won't
work unless the source can be determined.

Am try recordmydesktop, which does the job, but am unable to get sound

any ideas would be welcome

Ubuntu Studio Oneiric Beta 1 Testing

2011-08-31 Thread ScottALavender

Hello Everyone,

If you are able, please help us test the Ubuntu Studio Oneiric Beta 1
image! Be sure to report your tests.

You can find information and the images at the QA website:

The final release could be in jeopardy if we do not complete the mandatory
testing.

Oneiric Update

2011-08-31 Thread ScottALavender
This is copied from my blog to share with others:
http://dullass.blogspot.com/2011/08/oneiric-update.html

Well, here we are, getting close to the release of Ubuntu Studio 11.10 aka
Oneiric Ocelot and a few topics come to mind for immediate discussion.

ONEIRIC DEVELOPMENT
Sadly, development is crawling forward in between periods of stark
inactivity. Our goal was to transition to XFCE during this development
cycle. Unfortunately, it seemed that almost everyone of those actively
involved were busy outside of Ubuntu Studio. Development stagnated for
several months but I think we are building momentum again and making
progress.

Therefore it seems that while we may make a transition, it will not be the
thorough or complete transition for this release. It is embarrassing, but
it is also true.

So, it would seem that two development cycle will be required to complete
the transition to XFCE.

We are currently testing the Beta 1 image. You can help test as well
(please do!) by going to the QA Website and choosing the appropriate
architecture to test. And be sure to report your results!

I tested (and reported) the image last night and I will forewarn you that
it currently is not aesthetically pleasing at this point. Our main concern
at this point is to make sure everything works, then we can make it pretty.

Currently the current theme and settings are still the default XFCE
settings but Cory is still working on this. So, pretty is still in the
plan ;)

HELP
We still need help for almost everything. But this time I want to be
slightly more selective in my solicitation.

We certainly need people for almost every aspect but one quality (well,
perhaps two actually) I would like to highlight: self-reliance and
initiative.

People who can take a general direction (ie find out how to set the
background for the new lightdm greeter), find answers/solutions with
minimal input from the team (ie go find other code that has already done
it, ask the lightdm developer, or just play with it), and yield a results
(ie I figured out how and this is how you do it...) are greatly needed.
We appreciate anyone who wants to help, but if the team spends time to walk
someone else through it then other major changes will not occur. It's a
paradox and it sucks but that is where are at.

I knew practically nothing about development and no one directly mentored
me. I asked lots of questions, did a lot of research (all hail the mighty
Google), and experimented/tested a lot. It can be done, even if you don't
know much currently, but you need to have tenacity.

Also I want to state that internally we have shifted from using the
term developers to contributors for the team. This may seem like
semantics, but it is more than just that. There truly isn't that
much developing going on as we don't write a lot of code within the
team...but we do a lot of other things like creating themes, creating
packages that adjust settings, testing, artwork, yadda, yadda, yadda.

The fear was that the term didn't accurately reflect what we did and it
seemed to hold exclusive connotations. People shied away from help because
they weren't developers. But everyone (and I really, really mean that)
can contribute :)

Probably the best way to really get into the mix is to visit us on Freenode
IRC at #ubuntustudio-devel. Be sure to stay there for a while and don't
leave after three minutes because no one says anything back. We are all
busy and in different time zone so you may need to wait several hours
before you receive a coherent reply.

Of course, IRC visits aren't absolutely required to help because there's
always monthly QA testing and documentation that needs to be created and
maintained.

AUDIENCE
A confluence of activities yielded an interesting resultthe majority of
the active team feels that we should define our audience as musicians who
are new to Linux. This is still a continuing process so we might refine or
adjust this definition.

But the general feelings was that other multimedia distributions are
addressing other areas of the user space spectrum and Ubuntu already has a
connotation of being accessible for users new to Linux.

Therefore, Ubuntu Studio could directly support those who are new to Linux.
They might either have used a multimedia OS or may be transitioning from
Windows or Mac.

Unsurprisingly, articulating an audience and a goal suddenly gave a clearly
defined direction to the project that had been lacking and many of the
questions we had simply had answers. Troy predicted this phenomenon to me
over a year ago.

We would certainly appreciate any feedback on this subject.

ScottL

I'd suggest discussion around

Packaging a twistd plugin and python-support issues

2011-08-31 Thread Andreas Hasenack
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I'm packaging a twisted plugin (https://launchpad.net/txstatsd) for
Lucid (so no dh_python2 for me) and ran into an issue with
python-support that I would like some advice about.

If I don't create a .noinit file in the twisted plugin directory,
python-support will create an empty __init__.py file in there in
postinst. When that happens, twistd no longer sees the plugin.

I can't package a .noinit file with every plugin package, as they will
conflict.

I see a few alternatives, and would like some advice:

a) Check for the .noinit file presence in postinst, and create if
necessary, before the python-support update-python-modules is called.
Also make sure there is no __init__.py file in there, deleting it if needed.

b) Use python-central. I tried it and it works right out of the box. But
this is deprecated, right? Well, so is python-support, but -central is
more deprecated I think ;)

c) anything else?

Thanks!

Re: Packaging a twistd plugin and python-support issues

2011-08-31 Thread Matthias Klose
packaging of twisted plugins with python-support is broken by design. Even
python policy mentions explicitly that you should use the same packaging helper
for packages sharing the same python namespace.

You should use dh_python2 for that, or (deprecated) build with dh_pycentral
using `include-links'.

Matthias is working on sru's for dh_python2 for Lucid and Maverick, based on
the Natty package. When those are ready, I'll review/test them and we'll get
them in the pipeline. It's a fairly high priority for other packages too.

Re: Status of documentation translation

I believe it would be really great if the new docs (or at least the
part that is finnished) would be exposed for translation within the
next couple of days as a lot of teams (including ours) are going to
organize translation effort during Ubuntu Global Jam weekend and could
possibly translate a sizable chunk of Ubuntu documentation.

I've set this up, and the documentation will be available for
translation shortly at:

 https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu-docs/oneiric/

It is probably a good time for translators to work on translating the
documentation - and to report errors as bugs if you find any. However
given that the string freeze is not until 15 September, we can't
guarantee that the strings will remain unchanged between now and then.
There is normally intensive changes to the documentation in the period
leading up to that date. A very significant number of strings are
likely to remain unchanged, but some may not.

Thanks for your work.

Unity 2D string change

Hello,

One string has been changed in Unity 2D after the UI freeze. It is
documented by bug #834226 [1]. The string is part of the category header
displayed before results in the dash. The purpose of the change is to
match the string used by Unity.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] [OFF]? Briga dos formatos?

2011-08-31 Thread HERMETO JOSE DE MENEZES SILVA
programas abertos, principalmente no serviço público e assim criar a

[Ubuntu-BR] Problemas no acesso a Internet wireless

2011-08-31 Thread Franklin
Prezados

funcionando normalmente. Tanto no WIN 7 assim como no Ubuntu 10.04. Mas de
uns tempos pra cá, o ubuntu vem apresentando uns problemas estranhos onde
aparentemente não tem causa. A conexão é reconhecida, acessa a internet
nenhum site.
nova versão do firefox e do google chrome.

ubuntu

https://secure.logmein.com/US/labs/

tenta entrar no 1º tty ( Ctrl + Alt +F1), fechar o gdm (#service gdm stop) e

   sudo apt-get instal kubuntu-desktop.

   Onde errei?

Boa pergunta. Eu já instalei o Kubuntu 11.04 direto aqui; estou

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] [OFF]? Briga dos formatos?

2011-08-31 Thread Roberval Sena
amigos,

Origem: Wikipédia, a enciclopédia livre.

human-readablehttp://pt.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Human-readableaction=editredlink=1
)*.

13)[1]http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Text_Format#cite_note-0.

linguagem... nesse caso o formato do arquivo.

funcionando normalmente. Tanto no WIN 7 assim como no Ubuntu 10.04. Mas de
uns tempos pra cá, o ubuntu vem apresentando uns problemas estranhos onde
aparentemente não tem causa. A conexão é reconhecida, acessa a internet
 nenhum site.
nova versão do firefox e do google chrome.

Resumindo a situação:

   - Windows
  - Cabo e Wireles funcionam perfeitamente
   - Ubuntu

problema.

[Ubuntu-be] Introduction

2011-08-31 Thread Vincent Mangelschots
Hello

I'm new to the mailing list and would like to introduce myself.
I'm Vincent, I'm 26 years old and use Linux (mainly Ubuntu) for quite
some time now so I have some experience with it already. It took me a
while but I want to be more active in the community and so I joined
the ubuntu-be mailing list as a first step. If you want to know
something about me or could use my help with any of the events, just
ask.

I'll try to come to the Dipro fair in Antwerp and drop by. If you guys
need any more people maybe I can even help there?

Greetings

Vincent

[Bug 799711] Re: o2cb[11796]: ERROR: ocfs2_controld.pcmk did not come up

2011-08-31 Thread HenningMalzahn
Hello Jacob,

you were right. Of course the leftover from the Master/Slave setup up was
utterly wrong and I removed that.
Other than that I changed the following Pacemaker objects:

- Object that defines the multi state resource:
  - ms msDrbd2 resDrbd2 meta resource-stickiness=100 master-max=2
master-node-max=1 clone-max=2 clone-node-max=1 notify=true
globally-unique=false interleave=true
  - Previously defined without the interleave=true option

- Object that defines the primitive for the DLM
  - primitive resDlm ocf:pacemaker:controld op monitor interval=120s
  - Now added WITHOUT the previously used options: op start interval=0
timeout=90 op stop interval=0 timeout=100

- Object that defines the primitive for the O2CB service
  - primitive resO2CB ocf:pacemaker:o2cb op monitor interval=120s
  - Now added WITHOUT the previously used options: op start interval=0
timeout=90 op stop interval=0 timeout=100

- Object that defines the primitive for the filesystem object
  - primitive resFs2 ocf:heartbeat:Filesystem params device=/dev/drbd2
fstype=ocfs2 directory=/var/www op monitor interval=120s
  - Now added WITHOUT the previously used options: op start interval=0
timeout=90 op stop interval=0 timeout=100 meta target-role=stopped

So the overall configuration that works is the following:

augeas can parse it:

2011-08-31 Thread Herton R. Krzesinski
This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves
the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the
results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-
natty' to 'verification-done-natty'.

If verification is not done by one week from today, this fix will be
dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how

Re: [Ubuntu-ha] [Bug 799711] Re: o2cb[11796]: ERROR: ocfs2_controld.pcmk did not come up

2011-08-31 Thread Jacob Smith
Henning

You are probably right that this isn't the right place to continue with
non-bug questions though Andres or others could answer that more
acurately.

I would recommend drbd-users mailing list as there are many experts
there for config and troubleshooting. Also the pacemaker mailing lists
is a good one.

*snip*

I don't have any idea why your getting the broken pipe... but do you
have STONITH/fencing configured?!

Normally when you have a comm link break like that then you would want
Pacemaker to STONITH the disconnected node. Prior to the STONITH which
ever DRBD node is going to survive should fence the resource preventing
it from becoming primary until it is UpToDate.

I use the fence peer handler in DRBD set to resource only and then have
STONITH configure in Pacemaker. This way I can have a break in DRBD
that doesn't automatically STONITH the node (but prevents the borked
DRBD from coming up as Master and causing split brain) unless the
Cluster communications are also dead at which point Pacemaker will shoot
the node.

I think the lack of fencing/STONITH is causing the split brain because
both nodes do their own thing when not communicating which causes the
diverging data set.

This causes a split brain every time this happens even though there
 are
no writes on the devices yet.

You have your split brain handling configured like this still?:
after-sb-0pri disconnect;
after-sb-1pri consensus;
after-sb-2pri disconnect;

Your are telling it to disconnect regardless of changes with these split
brain lines (I believe it's part of the cause). Have you considered
using some more agressive split brain handling if your going with dual
primary? They can be controversial topic due to data loss but...

In the users guide at the bottom of this page it lists split brain
behaviors that are considered OK for dual primary/clustered filesystem
setups:

http://www.drbd.org/users-guide/s-configure-split-brain-behavior.html

after-sb-0pri discard-zero-changes;
after-sb-1pri discard-secondary;
after-sb-2pri disconnect;

You would likely hit sb-1pri if you had fencing. It would go something
like this:

Break in comms
Node 1 is fenced preventing it from becoming master
Pacemaker shoots node 1
Node 1 reboots and (if setup to auto start the cluster) pacemaker accepts the
node back into the cluster
Drbd links up and finds Node 1 is diverged
Node 1 is fenced so it is not master right now
Considers the after-sb-1pri rule - this assumes that since it's dual primary if
you have one primary then the dataset on that primary is always good and there
is no need to perserve the secondary data so just overwrite it.
Basically executes the commands you did manually and discards the Node 1 data.
Once Node 1 is UpToDate DRBD removes the fencing and allows Node 1 to become
master

I hope all of that wasn't too confusing!

Jake

[Bug 836668] Re: [FFE] python-mongodb

2011-08-31 Thread Dave Walker
It doesn't seem that we have any archive dependencies that require
mongodb support for kombu, and it does build ok without this build dep.
However, introducing a delta in kombu to keep pymogo out of main would
seem to be more work involved, than maintaining pymongo which currently
seems to be maintenance free; and it's only been tested with this build
dep so far in the cycle.

Looks fine from a MIR perspective. It has a test suite that isn't being

automatically. Would be good to look into, but since it's not a simple
manner, approving anyway.

Nope. Again, thanks for all of your help and the help of everyone else here!

As I'm still in early stages of learning how to set up Pacemaker clusters I

I would recommend drbd-users mailing list as there are many experts there for

There have been two recent uploads of multipath-tools into natty-
proposed, one for this bug and one for bug 829061. I rejected them both,
please reupload one package which fixes them both. Thanks!

[Bug 838280] [NEW] Cloud-init overwriting hostname given to kernel on baremetal

2011-08-31 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Public bug reported:

When PXE'ing, the hostname for the system is set via a kernel parameter.
However, once installation has finished, and cloud-init starts doing is
configuration based on a determined meta-data/user-data file it changes
the hostname to ubuntuhost without respecting what was given to the
kernel.

The kernel config for PXE is as follows:

[Bug 832123] Re: when booting oneiric cloud-images under libvirt, no pty is available

2011-08-31 Thread Serge Hallyn
Diagnosis: udev looks through /dev, making sure all devices have the
expected device type and permissions. If not, it replaces them.

lxc creates /dev/ptmx and bind mounts /dev/pts/ptmx on top of it, so it
has the expected device type.

libvirt creates /dev/ptmx as a symlink to /dev/pts/ptmx. This is not
the expected device type, so udev replaces it. A bare ptmx device is
not usable in the container as it is tied to the initial devpts
namespace.

There are three ways to solve this. One is a small patch to libvirt to
do the same thing lxc does. Another is to patch udev to allow ptmx to
be a symlink. The third is to have another upstart job shipped with the
lxcguest package, which starts on starting udev and replaces ptmx with a
bind mount.

Since a bind mount from /dev/pts/ptmx is always correct (with any modern
kernel), I suppose a fourth solution would be to have
/etc/init/udev.conf create the expected ptmx as a bind mount from
/dev/pts/ptmx unconditionally, even if it is not a container.
