[ubuntu-uk] Wipe and load 10.10 to 10.11
On my netbook, I use 10.10, the last version to run before Unity was introduced. Call me a stick-in-the-mud, but I liked Gnome desktop. If I was to go for a wipe and reload in the next coupla days, how easy is it to ditch Unity and switch back to Gnome desktop blinged up with CCSM?? Acer Aspire One ZG5 with SATA HD (not SSD). What are you looking at replacing 10.10 with? There is no Gnome 2 in 11.10 because it's all Gnome 3 based. Gnome 3 has a failback mode which is sort-of like Gnome 2 but isn't really the same. Hey Guys, With regret I'm not going to be able to make the release party, I caught the flu at the weekend and was hoping it would be gone by now. Thanks to all who responded - my problem is, when looking at mobile broadband deals, there's no technical detail on the dongles (or other kit) at all. All they say is compatible with PC (by which I take it they mean Windows) or MAC. How do I find out what the dongles actually are? [ubuntu-uk] Keyring password error
I have 10.10 Ubuntu. Used my machine with no problems this morning. Just switched back on and logged on to my account OK. But I get a message that my login password and my keyring password don't match, and to enter the password. Are the admin password and keyring password usually the same? And what can I have done to change the keyring password? Updates yesterday included linux headers, and today I think was only Chrome. Password and Encryption shows only one password, and that's login - but it's blank, including date created. I can't reset - I don't know what the old password is set to, as it says it isn't my admin password. I did have three apport warnings this morning, one for a game that I wasn't running, and two for apport itself. The majority of them are made by Huawei but really you've just got to Google for the ones that you're interested in. Ask your TSP what the brand and model number of their broadband dongle is.Hutchison 3mobile, did not guarantee that their dongle would work with Linux ,I contacted their techy department to tell them it does. To achieve a reasonable speed, you must be on a G3 connection, G2 is unreliable and slow. my Hyundi, sorry if mis-spelt has been used on G2, G3 and several ubuntu releases, though now on 10.04.Hope this helps and apologies for top-post. Thanks for the post. As a heads-up, unless I'm missing something, the videos aren't accessible under Ubuntu 11.04 in Firefox. Flash objects just appear as objects that occasionally snag focus and generally don't allow keyboard interaction. Weird stuff
Is the new distro ready or something... My main ubuntu studio machine just told me there was a distro upgrade to Oneiric Ocelot and would I like to install it I declined as it was my idea that was not yet. I took a look on the ubuntu site to see if there was a new release announcement and noticed that all mention of derivatives is gone... and they are announcing 11.10... OK For my main hard drive I think I will wait to upgrade... maybe till 12.04 ;-) However, I have a big drive I got for trying new releases on and I will run 11.10 and any development release stuff on that. I will also try and do stuff on it. My netbook will get 11.10 ubuntu desktop... but I have xfce on there as well so I will get used to that one way or another. I can see where unity has gone... if it is ready for daily use yet (11.04 was not!). I would like to be more involved in UStudio's next release. I can't draw and I play music more than record... I can script in bash, tcl/tk and perl anyway... though it has been a while. Newer GTK to me always means at least some accessibility fixes, and given my previous topic about accessibility for Precise, accessibility fixes from infrastructure package updates == win for me. about kmail2 and UDS considerations
Hi all; Sorry for stepping in - I subscribed to this list only for this mail and to express my disappointment about the current status of Kubuntu and kmail. I previously tried to express my concerns on the feedback page after beta1, but with no effect (other(s) did for later version in the cycle). There also have been a lot of bug reports (kubuntu and upstream) - to no avail. None seems to really care... at last it has been released now AS-IS. It started with kde 4.0, where kmails gpg integration stopped to work as seamless as it did with kde 3.x. This has been reported more than once on kde's bugtracker, debian, fora... According to the latest entry in debians bugtracker, it seems to be finally solved with kmail 1.13.7 - a version never released in kubuntu. The move to kmail2 has been made, despite to all warnings, bug reports elsewhere and is now called a disaster by the one who moved it to kubuntu 11.10. And the day it's released officially, the one who is responsible installed a downstreamed version on his own machine - kubuntu users left in the dark - with a version that does not fix previous pb's but even raise new issues - probably serious ones like loosing mails (see kde-pim list), a migration that simply does not work. This is indeed a disaster and lack of responsibilty. I understand Scott expressing that upstream is expected to work. Releasing sensible software like mail applications into the wild without a smooth way of migration, and by knowing about serious bugs is a no-go. And it's not only kubuntus fault - I had a short look into fedora and opensuse today, cause it was claimed that they work - which seems not to be true reading comments etc.. Kmail2 still seems not to be ready for daily work. This can't be justified by an understaffed team, if so, just don't do it and users have to wait another year. Making the step due to lack of beta testers and to force downstream developers (who fall into the trap) AND users to swallow it, while knowing about and/or neglecting serious problems and bug reports, and release alpha software will simply destroy reputation and a once nice application. This is indeed a disaster and lack of responsibilty. I'll give kubuntu and kmail2 another try on a virtual machine, if that still fails - I'll join those who move away from kmail to thunderbird. Something with a bitter taste after years, but given how developers work with one of my most important application and data, but better be safe than sorry. I don't want to blame anyone in person, it's all done in your spare time and I respect the work , but as it happended all in all it occurred as bad service to the application, the distribution and the community. And before someone asks me to help and there, developing this and that - I'd say just NO, I'm working on my own projects for more than eight years, to give the community something back, and I'm not responsible to fix your stuff, enough work to keep my own in a good shape and to show the same responsibilty for users, I demand from you. LoCo Team Portal Translation Updates
Greetings; I have finalized the updates to the LoCo Team Portal [0] to push out a new release today. There have been huge changes to the translation strings for the LoCo Team Portal. I would like to push out a translations update within the next week, so if you could please visit the translations pages [1] and update any translation strings that need to be updated prior to then. I am also sending this email out to the LoCo Contacts in hopes that they will forward the translation requests on to their team members, hoping that we could get some new translators involved in this great project. ./ - Representa o diretório corrente. Como ele não esta setado na variavel de ambiente PATH, o sistema não consegue localizá-lo, usando o ponto barra ele procura no local onde esta posicionado. Se observar todo diretório possui dois diretórios, são eles: . e .. ,representando o diretório atual e o pai do atual, respectivamente. Resumindo: um executável é qualquer arquivo que possui atributo x, independe da extensão. Eu acredito que existem pessoas diferentes com necessidades e conhecimentos diferentes. Considero que conheço bastante GNU/Linux e Ubuntu, mas nunca compilei um kernel com sucesso. Acabei considerando que não preciso (hoje em dia o desempenho das minhas máquinas não deixa nada a desejar). Acho que se alguém deseja explorar o máximo de seu computador, existem distribuições linux mais adequadas do que o Ubuntu. Frederico, Acho que você vai ter que fazer isso (1) via init.d (pesquise por upstart) ou (2) via rc.local Tenta aí. Qualquer dúvida manda pra cá. Marcus, (1) Hoje (2) Na maioria das vezes eu atualizo. Agora existem duas maneiras de atualizar: via Gerenciador de Atualizações ou via CD de Instalação Já atualizei das duas formas e as duas funcionaram. Porém, também sou adepto à dica do Robson. Costumo esperar um pouco. Normalmente a primeira versão sempre vem bugada. O mais prudente é aguardar pelo menos 1 mês após o lançamento. Falo isso por experiência própria. Eu costumo esperar 1 mês, mas confesso que algumas vezes a ansiedade não me deixa esperar tanto. (3) Basicamente a diferença entre você instalar do zero e atualizar é: INSTALANDO do zero toma mais tempo para backup e reconfiguração da máquina. Infelizmente o Ubuntu na sua era Unity ainda precisa de muitos tweaks e algumas pesquisas para deixar a máquina com a sua cara. A vantagem é que você fica com uma instalação mais clean, que quer dizer principalmente que os programas descontinuados na versão antiga (como Rhythmbox) não estarão mais presentes. Isso também garente que a nova instalação vai ficar 100% com a nova cara. Ou seja, qualquer pluging ou personalização de menus ou barra de status serão removidos. ATUALIZANDO você economiza o tempo de backup e reconfiguração da máquina, O lado ruim é que os programas antigos não serão removidos (o que as vezes pode ser uma coisa boa), então você poderá ficar com 2 programas instalados para fazer a mesma coisa: que na prática também não tem nada de mal. No caso, ele poderia tentar trocar o comando /sbin/getty e seus parâmetros pelo programa que ele quer. Pessoal nesse momento...vejam o diagnostico..assustador 56 - pacotes instalados e não tem mais suporte a canocnical 34 - pacotes serão removidos 292 - novos serão instalados 1.660 - pacotes atualizados 1.703GB - para baixar, demorando em media 1 hora e 22 minutos, numa conexão de 5mb gvt E diz que pode levar horas para atualizar. há algumas horas atrás eu iniciei as atualizações do 11.04 para o 11.10. contra as sugestões, eu sempre faço a atualização diretamente, ao invés de uma instalação limpa. eu prefiro assim. gosto de reforçar que, para quem quer, a atualização do ubuntu também funciona. basta estar disposto. no meu inspiron 1525 a atualização demorou por volta de 2 horas. nenhum problema foi relatado e após a reinicialização estava lá o novo 11.10. demais! gostei! gostei bastante! no computador de mesa, um quadcore com 4gb, eu achei que seria mais rápido. demorou por volta de 3 horas (download e instalações) e no final pipocaram várias vezes erros de atualização do plugin do flash. penei um pouco para conseguir reiniciar e, após isso, meu usuário principal não consegue carregar a área de trabalho. o outro usuário carrega normalmente, mas meu usuário principal não o faz. já tentei a reinstalação de alguns pacotes, sem sucesso. no pavillion dv4 da minha esposa parece ter demorado por volta de 2 horas e meia (engraçado, mas o computador mais fraco foi o mais rápido). os erros do plugin do flash também pipocaram. fiquei com medo, mas o reinício foi com sucesso e estava eu com o novo 11.10 também. até este momento estou sentindo que talvez a performance seja a mesma, senão um pouco mais lento do que o 11.04. vamos acompanhar mais um pouquinho. abraço, -- Rafael Bernard Rodrigues Araújo http://about.me/rafaelbernard -- Mais sobre o Ubuntu em português: http://www.ubuntu-br.org/comece Lista de discussão Ubuntu Brasil Histórico, descadastramento e outras opções: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-br

Seria melhor aguardar o rapaz relatar o que deseja com mais clareza e exemplos, muito foi falado mas ninguem sabe ainda o qual o resultado real do que ele questionou a lista. 1 - se o programa for gráfico mudar no tty não vai adiantar, muuito menos colocar no init. 2 - Ele pode querer apenas relacionar as teclas de atalho a programas que rodarão no X, como o compiz ou os atalhos de teclado do gnome. 3 - esqueci agora o que seria o 3, mas acho que s duas acima nos ajudará a aguardar o caro amigo descrever com detalhes o seu desejo. Boa noite, Lista e Zandré ! Com a chegada do Oneric, fiz uma instalação para ver como se sairia o novo Ubuntu. Hardware: Foxconn 945GZ-M Processador Celeron 2.66 Ghz HD de 320 GB 02 GB de RAM Monitor LG Wide 19 Fiz uma instalação limpa, preservando o /home que sempre deixo separado e limpando o mesmo apagando todas as pastas iniciadas com (.) ponto. A instalação foi rápida, em 20 minutos tava tudo pronto. A inicialização do sistema chegou a 26 segundos na primeira vez, ficando em 15 segundos cravados nas outras reinicializações. Tive um problema com o Unity. Ao iniciar, tudo bem, consegui entrar no desktop do usuário de forma normal. Porém, ao fazer logoff, o desktop inicializava, mas não mostrava nem o launcher nem a barra superior. A solução foi o Crtl + Alt + Del. Depois de quebrar a cabeça, e de dar uma rodada básica pelo oráculo (google) e pelas paginas de bug do Launchpad ( onde não encontrei nada ) eu descobri a causa do problema. Fui ao Setup do BIOS do PC e notei que a placa de vídeo ( uma Intel 82945GZ ) estava setada para usar 128 MB de memória. Modifiquei para 256 MB e o Unity funcionou que foi uma beleza. Depois deste pequeno incidente, fui aos testes do sistema para ver como estava se saindo. Instalei os pacotes de multimédia. Firefox 7 tem ótima performance. O Thunderbird 7 também funciona muito bem. A Central de Programas, embora esteja muito bem esteticamente, causou muita lentidão ao sistema quando aberto. Demora demasiada para instalar um programa, com congelamentos constantes. Senti falta das proteções de telas, elas não estão lá. A janela de configuração de novos usuários ficou menos poluída, bem mais fácil de se usar. Não tem mais o Synaptic. A inicialização do BRoffice está mais rápida. No mais, muito bonito esteticamente e rápido. Ainda esta semana vou instala-lo em minha máquina pessoal, que possui uma placa gráfica Nvidia para ver como ele se sai. Instalei o 11.10 numa VM e a performance do KDE 4.7 tá absurda!!! Efeitos habilitados e não dá um lag sequer! Com o 11.04 e anteriores, era habilitar os efeitos e ficar impraticável usar o sistema. Então Humberto, já rodei muito no google e nada de solução, tem varios posts em foruns por ai relatando o problema, mais nenhum com solução. Entre as coisas que ja tentei, estão, configuração do alsa-base, backports,mecher nas configurações do alsamixer, compilar o kernel mais novo, instalar driver do site da realtek, instalar o alsa mais novo, e nada desse microfone parar de chiar. (a cada modificação que não da certo, reinstalo o sistema em uma partição que deixei especialmente para isto, assim não corro o risco de acertar a configuração e não conseguir reproduzir depois.) A tbm chequei pra ver se era problema de hardware, instalei o windows 7, e pior que la funciona que uma beleza. Resumindo, estou perdido rs. Estou pensando em relatar isso como bug, mais não sei pra quem relato, visto que não afeta somente o ubuntu, ou distros baseadas no debian, Todas as distros que testei é a mesma coisa, Quem tiver mais alguma idéia, por favor mande ai. [Ubuntu-BR] Problemas
Pessoal, bom dia. Acabei de atualizar o meu ubuntu do 11.04 para o 11.10. Ao tentar iniciar a tela de login, não consegue; vai para uma tela em modo texto falando que conseguiu iniciar o mysql OK e o cursor fica parado na linha de baixo sem mostrar erro algum. Esperei por vários minutos e não acontece nada. Com o ALT+F2, fui para o modo texto, loguei e iniciei com o startx normalmente. Alguem tem ideia do que pode ser? Obrigado. У меня на работе, на компьютере с Ubuntu 8.04, для релаксации стоят карточные игры под Win. Одна из них, 1000, не требует установки. Нужно просто запустить исполняемый файл 1000.exe. Для этого не обязательно помещать программу в папку с Wine на диск С. Можно в любое место. Прикладываю изображение свойств кнопки запуска. Всё работает. [Bug 375569] Re: gnome-screensaver failure - can't access samba password database - not running as root
The thing is, this isn't really a bug at all. gnome-screensaver is working exactly as it's supposed to, as is pam_smbpass; it just logs (at severity LOG_DEBUG) a notice that the smbpasswd database is not being updated, because the process isn't running as root. The issue is that this is being called from each executable that uses pam, including those that don't have the right to change samba passwords, such as squid_auth, or vsftpd. The effect is not only log spam, but also authentication failures (in case of vsftpd: bug #723603).
