2011-04-11 Thread Achim
D'accord, Eric Appleman! Loaded and installed the update just a few
minutes ago. Restartet two times. After that loaded jEdit, changed an
option, closes it - and here it is again. If i remember right, it was
the same case a few hours ago... But not always reproducable with
jEdit. I'll keep this in mind...

2011-03-24 Thread Achim

Description:Ubuntu Natty (development branch)

Steps to reproduce the problem:

1. start Scilab (in my case 5.3 from the official website)
2. launch Xcos [Menu](Applications→Xcos)
3. use Xcos (drag an item from the palette browser to the Xcos window right
click on the item and open Block parameters…
close the dialog again. The window decorator should have been crashed now)

[Bug 607395] Re: Please merge matplotlib 1.0.1 from debian experimental

2011-01-31 Thread Achim Bohnet
As maverick is released it needs an SRU request. But bevor this can
happen it required to be in natty:

For natty: DebianImportFreeze was 30th December (
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyReleaseSchedule ) so we need to follow

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SyncRequestProcess

As there are ubuntu spec. changes they need to be merged etc. Any
python MOTU subscribed that is familar to the task?

[Bug 671280] Re: [compiz++] Poor performance

2011-01-30 Thread Achim
I also see strange behaviour with sync to vblank enabled.
This are the symptoms that I see:
 · animations look jerky
 · openGL games also suffer from this symptoms
 · everything is slower than it should be.

Even with sync to vblank disabled animations are not smooth and OpenGL apps are
also affected.
It looks like some frames get dropped.

For testing I used a daily desktop image (Natty) and updated compiz and unity.
I tested this on an Intel x4500HD (g45) chip.

Maybe it is possible that compiz supports swap events if the driver
supports it?

For reference see:
http://www.opengl.org/registry/specs/INTEL/swap_event.txt

[Bug 607395] Re: Version bump to 1.0.1

2011-01-22 Thread Achim Bohnet

Solved! From Changelog of 1.0.1
(http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/_static/CHANGELOG

2010-11-07 New rc parameters examples.download and examples.directory
allow bypassing the download mechanism in get_sample_data.
   - JKS

This looks like 1.0.1 the prinzipal problem is fixed. Source size
indicates this too:

-rw-r--r-- 1 ach ach 13285166 2011-01-06 14:59 matplotlib_1.0.1.orig.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 ach ach 61753323 2011-01-02 05:25
matplotlib_1.0.1-rc1-1ubuntu5.tar.gz

@Ben: A bit problematic is that you did use 1.0.1-rc1 instead of 1.0.1~rc1.
An official natty upload would use 1.0.1-0ubuntu1 which is smaller than your
version.

Any MOTU reading this? ;)

[Bug 674251] Re: alias gets reset and is not saved for jabber accounts

2010-12-29 Thread Achim
As it seems the problem occurs when I login to my jabber-account from
another computer.

To reproduce the problem you need another PC/Laptop.

1. Login to your jabber/XMPP-account on your PC.
At this point your alias should be like you have set it.
2. Login to your jabber/XMPP-account from another PC/Laptop
If you now take a look at your alias it should have changed.

That the primary group is not properly validted is especially dangerous, due to

[Bug 555620] [NEW] Sync openafs (1.4.12+dfsg-3) from Debian unstable

2010-04-05 Thread Achim Bohnet
Public bug reported:

Reading the 1.4.12 release notes at:

http://dl.openafs.org/dl/openafs/1.4.12/RELNOTES-1.4.12

that list just one new feature and but on the other hand dozends of bug fixes
and considering that Lucid will be LTS it would be IMHO a good thing to
have the following stuff fixes that are part of 1.4.12:

* Bugfixes:

All systems:

- Fixes to avoid issues cleaning up deleted hosts in the fileserver
(126454)

- Fixes to avoid dropping writes due to server idle timeouts.

- Don't miss cache chunks of large files while truncating.

- Avoid null pointer dereference for unexpected volume names in volume
  utilities.

- Don't mark connections waiting for additional packet window availability
  idle.

- Kerberos 5 utilities (klog.krb5, aklog) enable weak encryption
support.

- Avoid a double-free of an Rx call structure during a client fetch
error.

- Avoid losing hosts during address changes. (125215)

- Clients shouldn't trust Fetchdata replies for the size of returned
data.

- fileserver will not hang when attempting to cleanup and dump core.

- salvager will not leave core files in random directories.

- avoid letting retransmit timer get to 0 seconds.

- in event of dbserver contact failure, shut fileserver down cleanly.

- handle large partitions during check for needed disk space at
  client start.

- time out Rx connections if network unreachable error received.

- avoid dereferencing NULL pointer freeing Rx packets in receive.
(125110)

- mark stack not executable in LWP. (125491)

- return a correct VolumeSync structure from Bulkstat RPCs in
fileserver.

- client attempts to better free memory at shutdown.

- clear rx call queue safely. (125110)

- retry VLserver registration on failure in fileserver.

- update accessdate for volumes on access in fileserver.

- additional safety checks on vlserver operations to avoid
  database corruption.

- make ktc_curpag available on all builds. (125155)

[...]

Linux:

- Handle kernel changes through 2.6.33.

- Fix oops in clear_inode due to missed locking. (125589)

- Better handle /afs mount failures.

- Clean up after failures creating our kernel kmem cache.

- Work around memory management issues with some kernels when configuring
  the buffer cache/bdi (126514)

- Rename compile_et to afs_compile_et to avoid RPM conflicts.

- Handle whole-file locks properly. (126561)

- Deal with kernel autoconf header renaming.

- Handle SELinux cache backing file labels better to avoid potential oops.
  (92944,125544)

Anyone aware why we should not try to get a late sync done? (or why it was
not done yet ;)

I wasn't really able to test it, because g-v-c behaves quit unexpected.

[Bug 439718] Re: New Gnome mixer makes sound tinny/crackly, alsamixer doesn't

2010-03-06 Thread Achim
I guess this report here is a duplicate of #445849.

Because of the strange behaviour of g-v-c I can not really tell if the problem
is entirely gone.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/445849/comments/115

Changing the volume of the Master slider of g-v-c doesn't produce any
tinny/crackly sound, as far as I can tell.

Regards
Achim

[Bug 532009] Re: Regression: PDF and Postscript files stopped printing after security update 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.4

2010-03-05 Thread Achim Bohnet
Hmm, that's strange:

[0]r...@ex-srv6:~/tmp# df -h /var/spool/cups /var/spool/cups/tmp
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 4.9G 2.9G 1.8G 63% /
/dev/sda1 4.9G 2.9G 1.8G 63% /

And in /var/log/messages I get no mesgs between end of upgrade and the reboot
I've tried 40 min later.
I've also rsync 3.2 MB of 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2 to / without IO errors before the
downgrade.

I'll retry the upgrade again next Monday when I'm again in the office.

[Bug 529021] [NEW] [PATCH] URLs returned by nepomuksearch unusable or irritating

2010-02-27 Thread Achim Bohnet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-runtime

Using nepomuksearch in dolphin and clicking on one of the search results,
leads to URLs, not working (kde 4.3 tags)

file_3A_2F_2F_2Fhome_2Fallee_2FVideos_2FYouTube_2FFalco_2520-_2520Out_2520of_2520the_2520Dark.mp4

by e.g. vlc, dragonplayer and kaffeine, or weird names for tags created in KDE
4.4
the form

nepomuk_3A_2Fres_2Fa6d449b3-f1c5-4939-9e47-8c8bd87ed963

That clutter and irritats in 'Save as..' dialog, window titles or
whereever a filename is used.

Simple patch from urkud from #nepomuk fixes it:
http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/3069/

I've verified the patch on karmic with 4.4 (debdiff attached). If you accept
the patch
please add

Thx to Yury G. Kudryashov from #nepomuk-kde for the patch

(shame on me that I've forgotten to name the patch author)

[Bug 493607] Re: rkhunter reports openssl and sshd versions out of date

2010-02-01 Thread Achim Bohnet
Please note: One has to have a blank at the start and the end of the
APP_WHITELIST in rkhunter.conf. Like

APP_WHITELIST= openssl:0.9.8g sshd:4.7p1

otherwise first and last entry will never match, as the test used is

if [ -n `echo \${APP_WHITELIST}\ | grep \ ${APPLICATION}:${RKHTMPVAR} \`
]; then
 ...

:-( Hope this saves others some time.

pulseaudio -k, and the run VLC again. At this step I think the next

2/ I have 2 sound cards in my system so by disabling pulseaudio the first

I ran these tests on Ubuntu 10.04 alpha2 only.

The informations you've added helped me to understand what happened,

Is there a way to check how alsa detect my optical output ?

I think at this point it is better to ask the question at the alsa ML or
Pulseaudio ML.

Re: [Bug 205717] Re: S/Pdif / digital output not available in pulseaudio

2010-01-17 Thread Achim
 Achim,

I read you explanation but I can't get it working like expected.

I run my tests on Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 alpha2.
I configure VLC with use S/PDIF if possible and totem with direct AC3
 output.
I chose analog duplex profile for my usb terratec MKII sound card on
 gnome-volume-control.

When I play a dolby-digital sample vob file, I get stereo sound trough
my optical connexion. This is strange because this happen even when
digital output profile isn't used. Is it my sound card that create a
 digital stereo stream ?

If you only get stereo sound, this can have several reasons.
1. the vob file only has Dolby Digital 2.0.
2. the sound gets resampled by pulseaudio.

Totem with gstreamer is not able to pass-through dolby-digital.
VLC with use S/PDIF if possible and Alsa should work.

Make sure that you don't use PulseAudio as output in VLC.

I also had to restart VLC to get it working.

Is there a way to get more information about what kind of stream is
sended by the system through the digital output ?

You can use this file as test.
http://www.lynnepublishing.com/surround/www_lynnemusic_com_surround_test.ac3

I hope this information is helpful

Thanks for your quick reply Nicolò.

I have changed the size of the avatar to 32px and did a little comparison to

As you can see, the image in the theme looks pixelated. I think this is because

Re: [Bug 445849] Re: Highpitched Rattling like Sound with 5.1 Surround Configuration on Karmic Koala

2009-12-14 Thread Achim
My sound is now working flawlessly but now my MCE remote doesn't
work?? The LIRC remotes list has changed for some reason. Oh well my
sound is definitely more important than the remote.

You have to compile lirc for your new kernel.

This is how I do it. It isn't the best way but it works.

$ sudo apt-get build-dep lirc

Download these three files to a directory

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/lirc_0.8.6.orig.tar.gz
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/lirc_0.8.6-0ubuntu2.diff.gz
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/lirc_0.8.6-0ubuntu2.dsc

Then go into that directory and follow these instructions:

$ dpkg-source -x lirc_0.8.6-0ubuntu2.dsc
cd lirc-0.8.6/
$ ./configure
$ make
$ sudo make install

[Bug 488675] Re: karmic: openafs update fails: Error! DKMS tree already contains: openafs-1.4.11

2009-11-26 Thread Achim Bohnet
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 463429 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/463429

Are you sure it's a duplicate?

I've seen the 'missing header' bugreport, I checked I had the headers of
the running (-14) and the newly installed kernel (-15). Both are installed:

[0]r...@allee:~# dpkg -l linux-headers-* | grep ^i | cut -b -80
ii linux-headers-2.6.31-142.6.31-14.48
ii linux-headers-2.6.31-14-generic2.6.31-14.48
ii linux-headers-2.6.31-14-server 2.6.31-14.48
ii linux-headers-2.6.31-152.6.31-15.50
ii linux-headers-2.6.31-15-generic2.6.31-15.50
ii linux-headers-2.6.31-15-server 2.6.31-15.50
ii linux-headers-generic 2.6.31.15.28
ii linux-headers-server 2.6.31.15.28

These 2 kernel are the only one installed:

[0]r...@allee:~# dpkg -l linux-image-* | grep ^i | cut -b -80
ii linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic 2.6.31-14.48
ii linux-image-2.6.31-15-generic 2.6.31-15.50
ii linux-image-generic2.6.31.15.28

Nevertheless the postinst fails. So I opened a new bugreport.

As far as I understand this problem it seems, that only proprietary

[Bug 439718] Re: New Gnome mixer makes sound tinny/crackly, alsamixer doesn't

2009-10-11 Thread Achim
I have done a little demo video.

The video is getting a bit async.
I recorded the problem with gnome-sound-recorder and the monitor device.

You have to ignore the low frequency noise, I don't hear that out of my
speakers.
The high frequency noise is hearable.

Most of the time 'Banance' is not affected by that problem.

What also looks a bit weird is that some sliders seem to be connected to each
other.
You will notice if I move one slider other sliders also start to move, that is
strange.

I hope this information is somehow helpful.

Achim

[Bug 205717] Re: S/Pdif / digital output not available in pulseaudio

2009-10-10 Thread Achim
Rogerio,

the bug description was never talking about passthrough. So I would say you
should fill a new bug.
The problem, that you wasn't able to choose the output at all is now fixed.

Also take a look at Lennarts blog.
http://0pointer.de/blog/projects/lpc-bluez-maemo-2009.html

Codec handling is one of the features that is on his todo list.

Achim

2009-10-09 Thread Achim Bohnet
You showed us that you have no .bash_profile and .bash_profile, now do
you have a ~/.profile?

If yes: is .bashrc sourced in .profile? if not: add it (see
/etc/skel/.profile how to do it)

if you have no .profile, copy /etc/skel/.profile to $HOME/ and be happy
not to be forced to souece bashrc explicitly ;)

[Bug 135557] Re: [i965gm] Kubuntu: Screen dimensions of external monitor not correct on X server startup (intel driver)

2009-10-09 Thread Achim Bohnet
Hi 7oby,

well, ...

1) Keith describes that with the current algorigthm _his_ LVDS used the
native (i.e. best) resolution. So he stopped after 'works-for-me'
(perfectly fine for the first start). If this would be the case for me
too, everything would be alright too ;) As this is not the case, and the
algorithm fails miserably in result visible, I had to write this bug
report and bug 437173.

2) I could not try you 'fix dpi' setting, as the user took the laptop
with him again, nevertheless this would be a workaround (but thx for
pointing me to the setting). I reported it in the hope it can be fixed.
Back on topic: agreeing on one dpi is fine (in the first step) but when
the high resolution monitor is turned off with xrandr, the dpi (as
xrandr and xdpyinfo report them) should be changed to the native
resolution of the only remaining monitor (96dpi) and not stay at 147
dpi.

[Bug 447065] [NEW] Konsole does not save short-cut and show-in-menu settings of profiles

2009-10-09 Thread Achim Bohnet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

uptodate karmic: KDE 3.4.2: konsole 4:4.3.2-0ubuntu1 (but problem was
there also in KDE 4.2)

I've added 3 profiles. In Settings - Manage Profiles ... for all of them
I've selected ShowInMenu and assigned a shortcut.
Everytime I logout/in or start konsole again. The settings very lost :(

After setting the settings again, I've checked modified time of
~/.kde/share/config/konsolerc and ~/.kde/share/apps/konsole/*.desktop and last
update of all of them was days back and not just some minutes.
Quit and start of konsole: again, konsolerc, and *.desktop files not updated
and settings were lost.

Workaround:

In order to write this bug report, I switched the language to english
(was german) and restarted konsole. Now magicly the settings were not
forgotten. Tata, konsolerc was updated. Konsolerc contains now
[Favorite Profile] and [Profile Shortcus] sections.

This provesonce more that reporting bugs is really helpful ;)

[Bug 447079] [NEW] konsole uses complete path to it's profiles for favorits and shortcuts in konsolerc

2009-10-09 Thread Achim Bohnet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

uptodate karmic: KDE 3.4.2: konsole 4:4.3.2-0ubuntu1

if one manages to save the 'Manage Profiles...' settings (see bug
447065) konsole writes the complete path to the profiles into
konsolerc. E.g.

[Favorite Profiles]
Favorites=/home/allee/.kde/share/apps/konsole/root
shell.profile,/home/allee/.kde/share/apps/konsole/root @
where-ever.profile,/home/allee/.kde/share/apps/konsole/secure
remote.profile,/home/allee/.kde/share/apps/konsole/Shell.profile
...
[Profile Shortcuts]
Ctrl+(=/home/allee/.kde/share/apps/konsole/root @ where-ever.profile
Ctrl+)=/home/allee/.kde/share/apps/konsole/root shell.profile
Ctrl+*=/home/allee/.kde/share/apps/konsole/secure remote.profile

As profile are stored in apps/konsole/ that's not necessary and
counterproductive:
Using complete path one runs in trouble when username changes,
or one sents ones profiles to other people.

Exactly for this problem type KDE3 introduced special methods in KConfig
(AFAIR)
to strip $HOME (and maybe(?) other well known places like appdata?)

Please strip the complete directory path or at least $HOME or $KDEDIR.
