On Fri, 2011-02-04 at 18:46 +, Chris Coulson wrote: On Fri, 2011-02-04 at 10:22 -0800, Akkana Peck wrote: it's 30s of editing. Arguably, my bad for not providing a patch; but again, I thought that would be a waste of time, because it would take longer for me to produce a patch, be sure that it was clean, and applied to the latest version of the package, and then for the developer to apply it, than for the developer simply to edit the man page themselves and produce a package patch. Including a patch often doesn't help anyway. That just leads to can you make a debdiff rather than a patch? Make a debdiff, and it turns out you should have made a PPA. Make a PPA, and there are further steps. After a while you realize it's a lot less work to maintain your own copy of the package source locally than to keep trying to find the magic steps to get the fix into Ubuntu. I don't really consider a debdiff to be a necessary requirement for sponsoring a bug, especially if it is just dropping in a patch touching upstream code. What matters is that the patch is correct and of the required quality. It's not difficult for sponsors to create a package using a patch that a contributor has attached to a bug report (after all, the extra work is normally just creating a changelog entry, which isn't particularly hard). I hope your experience isn't the norm. If we are driving away contributors and turning away good patches because somebody hasn't provided a debdiff, then this makes me both sad and angry. Chris, Seems you are among the few odd-ones-out among the sponsors! (/me takes note for future ;p) What Akkana mentions is what happens even today. If there is no debdiff, sponsors just comment: bug report has no debdiff to sponsor here, unsubscribing sponsors. Pls resubscribe when there is a debdiff. (similar for the merges with no changelog entries) Some sponsors even get angry when subscribed for a patch. ;-) Some sponsors subscribe the Review team to make the patch - debdiff, and ask to be resubscribed later. But review team effort is not sufficient. One problem often faced is, after the patch-diff work is done, it is not sufficient enough for the patch to be uploaded, Because the patch needs to be sent upstream for their review and sponsors again unsubscribe from the bug. (yes, the reviewer should know these should go upstream! but it is more of a bug in our tools/workflow) The problem is, we are allowing patches to be attached for such packages. We have the bugs open in lp and since Ubuntu is the distro they use, they attach the patch on lp and wonder why we wait and dont just upload. Very few new folks realize that Ubuntu is more of package work than actual app/package development. IMO, Kubuntu folks have a better workflow. If it is not a bug caused by Ubuntu changes, they just close the lp bug and continue discussion on the upstream bugs. Which makes it a bit clearer where the patch/discussion needs to go. I'm not suggesting that we suddenly switch our entire workflow, but Maybe not allow patches to be uploaded for packages not hosted on lp or notify when patch is being attached and only allow to attach when they choose to ignore the notification? Not sure what the ideal solution is but whatever it is, we need to make sure that we dont accumulate patches in lp and drive away potential contributors. -- Cheers, Vish I'm quite new to this whole process, but if patches are frowned on in lp, then why are these accepted?!? There's even a patch on my bug report that fixes the bug. Thanks Liam If you think that's bad, my system won't even boot because I have a Radeon Mobility X1400 in my Dell Inspiron and I get a GPU lockup at startup due to a memory barrier issue. [Bug 360818] Re: NetworkManager.vpn fails -- nm-vpn-connection.c.900: NeedSecrets
You know, I cannot understand why anyone says that the patch produced in comment #3 works for folks. The syntax is totally wrong - it's at_console=true, not user=at_console. I looked up what at_console does, and as it turns out at_console was originally created to use RedHat's pam_console... which of course is specific to RedHat. Ubuntu gets around this by using libpam-foreground, and from the following bug report at Debian http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=422349 I believe that there's been a patch done to dbus to get this working. I guess my next question is: if you aren't using at_console (or pam_console, or pam_forground), then how does ConsoleKit do this? ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #422349 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=422349 -- NetworkManager.vpn fails -- nm-vpn-connection.c.900: NeedSecrets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/360818 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 360818] Re: NetworkManager.vpn fails -- nm-vpn-connection.c.900: NeedSecrets
OK, so I'm trying to work this out. NeedSecrets - now correct me if I'm wrong here, but from what I've read while doing some research, this is an error that's occuring because network-manager can't get access to the relevant passwords for the VPN connection! So in my travails into how it seems that NetworkManager does things (someone please pipe in here if I'm wrong), but this is how I understand that it works: 1. You bring up the network manager interface to connect to the VPN 2. nm then looks at gconf at System/Network/Connections/ and looks for the entry that matches the name, uuid and the service plugin name (?? is this right?) 3. It can then prompt for credentials, or it looks at Gnome-keyring. So therefore, I guess that the following need to be checked: 1. Check what the uuid is for your VPN connection in gconf 2. Now go to Applications - Accessories - Passwords and Encryption Keys 3. Find the key for this connection (it should says something like password for VPN connection name If you can't find it, then possibly there is something wrong with retrieving the secrets needed for the VPN? Just a thought. If an nm person could chime in, that would be great :-) Hopefully I'm not misleading anyone! [Bug 610039] Re: firefox-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in sqlite3VdbeExec()
Mozilla won't be fixing sqlite3, the sqlite developers will be fixing sqlite3. The Mozilla folks just use the sqlite3.c and sqlite3.h source file and embed it unmodified into their source tree. There will be a fix in sqlite 3.7.x - I'm asking their developers if there is a bug logged that we can look at, however as the sqlite3 guys found that their bug tracking tool was being used to ask for a lot of feature requests (and was swamping them), bug reporting isn't quite as transparent as Launchpad/Bugzilla. I still think we should track this via sqlite - what happens if someone finds a problem running a query in the sqlite3 shell? How do you track bugs then? [Bug 610039] Re: firefox-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in sqlite3VdbeExec()
After further troubleshooting, turns out that this is a specific problem with a corrupted index. The sqlite3 guys have developed a fix for sqlite3. From http://www.sqlite.org/src/ci/83395a3d24: If a database becomes corrupted such that an index is out of sync with its table, make sure the corruption is detected and reported back. Do not assume that indices always contain rowids for valid table rows. This is being fixed in sqlite3 3.7.1 If anyone encounters this issue, they can do the following: ch...@ubuntu:~/.mozilla/firefox/1u64q3v3.default$ for i in *.sqlite; do echo Reindexing $i; echo reindex; | sqlite3 $i; done Reindexing content-prefs.sqlite Reindexing cookies.sqlite Reindexing downloads.sqlite Reindexing formhistory.sqlite Reindexing permissions.sqlite Reindexing places.sqlite Reindexing search.sqlite Reindexing signons.sqlite Reindexing urlclassifier3.sqlite ch...@ubuntu:~/.mozilla/firefox/1u64q3v3.default$ -- firefox-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in sqlite3VdbeExec() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/610039 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Gee, thanks heaps! I wrote in the last action that I was having problems getting the debug package, and I asked if someone could help me out. No response at all. I'm trying to, but don't seem to be getting very far. From the page you linked me to, I ran the following: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-control-center-dbgsym [sudo] password for chris: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: gnome-control-center-dbgsym: Depends: gnome-control-center (= 1:2.20.0.1-0ubuntu5) but 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu4.1 is to be installed E: Broken packages --- The version of gnome-control-center that I havce is 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu4.1 I'd like to backtrace, but have hit a snag. [Bug 224221] [NEW] Change Transmission menu entry to Transmission BitTorrent client
Public bug reported: From the great Ubuntu-Girlfriend experiment: http://contentconsumer.wordpress.com/2008/04/27/is-ubuntu-useable- enough-for-my-girlfriend/ The only problem I see here is the name of Transmission in the menu. I imagine that her problems would’ve been reduced if only they listed “Transmission BitTorrent Client” instead. How on earth is a user supposed to know what Transmission is? The icon certainly doesn’t help. They do this with “Firefox Web Browser”, so why not Transmission? Weird. They could even just put “file-sharing client”, and when it loads up for the first time a wizard can help the user understand what BitTorrent is and how it works. I think he has a fair point. Putting this out there as a usability bug... sorry, I filed it under the package gnome-main-menu as I couldn't work out what else to file it under. ** Affects: gnome-main-menu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Change Transmission menu entry to Transmission BitTorrent client https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224221 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 224229] [NEW] Quite hard to change screen resolution back to normal when resolution is set very low
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center From the great Ubuntu-Girlfriend experiment, on Hardy Heron: http://contentconsumer.wordpress.com/2008/04/27/is-ubuntu-useable- enough-for-my-girlfriend/ Ninth Task: Change screen resolution. This was easy from the Preferences menu under Screen Resolution, and she changed it to the smallest size available: 720×400. However, she clicked “Keep settings” straight away, and couldn’t work out how to get it back because the screen was too small to display the entire height of the Screen Resolution menu. Eventually I had to do it for her by tabbing through the options. This is pretty ridiculous – you can’t make it shorter and you can’t move it up past the top of the screen. There’s no way I can see of being able to change the resolution using that menu when you’re on a small resoltion – without tabbing to invisible options that you don’t know are there. Maybe I’m just missing something, I’d be happy to be enlightened. Can something be done about this? Not everyone would do this, but it would be nice to be able to easily recover from this sort of problem! ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Quite hard to change screen resolution back to normal when resolution is set very low https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224229 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 224229] [NEW] Quite hard to change screen resolution back to normal when resolution is set very low
I'm wondering whether it would be better to move the select boxes to the top of the screen and have the graphic down the bottom when in the lowest resolution. Alternatively, could you not make the window resizable and have it use scrollbars? Not everyone would do this, but it would be nice to be able to easily recover from this sort of problem! Thanks for the bug report. We saw this and spoke briefly about it yesterday. The first thing to note is that the 400 pixel height is pretty small, and hopefully something that not many users will hit. It was suggested that we move the Detect Displays button to be on the row of buttons at the bottom. That should shrink it just enough that it fits in this height, but obviously if you made it smaller still you would still be stuck. I also think that the clone checkbox has too much prominence, and moving that could perhaps save a few pixels as well. Seb, do you think fixing this would be worthy of an SRU? If so, would you have a preferred way of fixing it? [Bug 224229] Re: Quite hard to change screen resolution back to normal when resolution is set very low
Well... the problem is that the app allows users to shoot themselves in the foot, and they often do. In fact, even experienced users who should know better (like myself at times) can have a brain fart and choose that smaller resolution. If the tool allows you to set a screen resolution less than 800x600 then wouldn't it be better to prevent them from selecting such an option? -- Quite hard to change screen resolution back to normal when resolution is set very low https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224229 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
