Will there be an updated binary for Lucid?

I'm happy to make one / provide patches / whatever technically needs to

[Bug 871728] [NEW] network manager forgets wifi password on suspend/restart

2011-10-10 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

I've been keeping up with the oneirc updates, but within the past couple
of days, the network manager has forgotten my wifi password, and every
time I suspend or restart the computer I have to enter the password
again.

Looking at the password and keys setting application, there no longer
appears to be a 'Network Secret' saved for my home (or work) wifi
account, although there are some other less-used networks still in
there.

[Bug 871728] Re: network manager forgets wifi password on suspend/restart

2011-10-10 Thread David Dean
Ok, this seems to be somewhat related to bug #854833, but the Available
to all users checkbox which is suggested as a workaround in that bug
was grayed out for me.

However, if I deleted the wireless network that was causing the problem
and then reconnect to it, the newly created wireless network does have
the Available to all users checkbox available (and ticked) and it now
does remember my wireless password between suspends and restarts.

I guess this was caused by a migration issue when a package was updated
recently, but I'm not sure exactly when it first occurred.

[Bug 872075] [NEW] possible evince memory leak, system unresponsive with high iowait

2011-10-10 Thread David Dean

[Bug 683450] [NEW] Visual Effects won't work with Dual Monitors and Intel 945GME

2010-11-30 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a HP 530 laptop with an Intel 945 GME
integrated video card. Visual effects work fine on the laptop screen,
but when I go dual-monitor I can't seem to enable visual effects.

Going into the Appearance dialog, setting visual effects appears to work
(i.e. the screens flicker, no error message appears, and the radio
button stays selected), but they don't actually get activated. When I go
back to the Appearance dialog, the visual effects are set back on None.

[Bug 670201] Re: evince freezes with high iowait, locks up entire OS

2010-11-08 Thread David Dean
It turns out I was having some problems with a failing hard drive
causing high iowait when swap memory was being used.

However, I have replaced the hard drive and are still having similar
problems (but of a lesser magnitude) in a clean Ubuntu 10.10
installation.

I have a HP 530 Notebook PC with 1 GiB of RAM and 4.7 GiB of swap. I'm
happy to provide other details if you think they are relevant.

The memory usage of evince appears to move around a bit while it is
trying to load the third page (I assume one of the diagrams is causing
the problem) from around 300 MiB to 600 MiB, but the memory taken away
from the system appears to be higher. This can be seen in the attached
screen shot of system monitor after I killed the evince process, where
around 700 MiB of memory and 1.4 GiB of swap are returned to the system.

When I open the attached pdf, evince freezes with high iowait, and the
entire system is unusable. It's difficult to even start up a tty using
Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that the offending process can be killed. No problems

[Bug 663072] [NEW] mythtv frontend crashes and logs-out on playing bad recording

2010-10-18 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

When I attempt to play some mythtv recordings the entire mythtv-frontend
crashes taking my login session with me. I then have to log back in and
I lose all the other open applications. This happens on both when
playing the recordings on the backend or using mythtv-frontend on one of
our maverick laptops. This bug report was from one of the laptops, not
the backend.

It doesn't happen with all recordings, just some. I haven't worked out
yet if there is any common factor in the recordings, I'll keep watch and
report back. Playing the recording using the ASX stream from mythweb
appears to work on the same laptop as this crash report, but it does
appear a bit jerky but totem doesn't report any problems with it.

[Bug 663072] Re: mythtv frontend crashes and logs-out on playing 1080i/p recording

2010-10-18 Thread David Dean
ok, I've delved a little deeper into this, and it appears to be
happening on recordings that show the 1080 icon in mythtv. This leads me
to believe that this computer might not be up to playing HD recordings
as it is currently setup. A more graceful failure mode would be useful
though.

2010-10-18 Thread David Dean
It appears this crash (at least on the backend pc, I haven't checked the
others) was being caused by a Playback Profile that included the use of
XvMC. Once I changed to a different playback profile that didn't use
XvMC everything appears fine.

[Bug 629420] Re: Page down on the scroll-bar goes down more than one page

2010-10-04 Thread David Dean
Okay, I've delved into this problem a bit more and it seems that the
issue is that no matter how I resize my gwibber window, the page-down
amount on the scroll bar is always the same. Only if I maximise my
gwibber window does it come close to being correct for one full page of
tweets (even then it is still off by one).

I've attached an image to illustrate this. Please excuse the blurring,
as some of the tweets may have been private.

[Bug 627753] [NEW] Wireless network connection won't remember certificate file

2010-08-31 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

To connect to our wireless network at QUT, we have to follow the
instructions at
http://www.itservices.qut.edu.au/connectoncampus/wireless/userguides/linux.jsp,
which involves entering our username and password alongside selecting a
downloaded certificate file (also available at the previous link).

This works fine to connect the first time, but upon reset or if you need
to reconnect for some reason, network-manager (or whatever handles this)
forgets the location of the downloaded certificate. You have to wait for
the non-certificate connection to time-out before you can provide the
certificate file again. It then works fine until the next time you need
to reconnect.

it might be a firmware issue.

2010-07-14 Thread David Dean
As to what caused the problem, I'm not entirely sure. I tried to
shutdown my laptop because a process (kacpid, I think) was running at
very high cpu. However the shutdown itself seemed to stall after a few
minutes so I power cycled the laptop. At this point the wireless card no
longer works and doesn't appear to show in lspci any more.

Brisbane OpenStreetMap Meetup on Monday Night

2010-06-16 Thread David Dean
I hope this isn't too off-topic here, but I think there are probably a
few Brisbane ubuntu users who might be interested in OpenStreetMap.

Calling all map-lovers, amateur cartographers, surveyors and
cartophiles! There’s a friendly meetup of OpenStreetMappers in
Brisbane soon, and we hope to have a few interested newbies thrown
into the mix.

* When: Monday 21st June 2010 18:30 - 21:00
* Where: Grange Library - 79 Evelyn Street, The Grange, Qld, 4051
* Details: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Brisbane_Mapping_Meetups

OpenStreetMap is a collaboratively built free map of the world, with
simple wiki-like editing; think ‘Wikipedia’, but for maps. The result
is highly detailed digital maps, created and edited by local
communities, that are free to reproduce without the normal commercial
restrictions. It's a fun project to get involved with; you'll discover
how maps are made and uncover the geographical secrets of your
neighbourhood.

Volunteers from all around Brisbane have already begun mapping the
roads, footpaths and cycleways across the city, but now we need your
help to improve your local area by adding street details and amenities
such as restaurants, parks, playgrounds and shops.

If you have a laptop, bring it along and we'll show you how easy it is
to use OpenStreetMap on your own computer. Internet access will be
available through shared mobile broadband and library Wi-Fi (Brisbane
Libraries membership required).

You are welcome to map however and wherever you want, but here are a
few ideas for the evening:

* Fix OpenStreetMap errors in your local area
* Help add roads and other features using aerial imagery
* Put your house (and your neighbour’s) on the map
* Improve suburb boundaries
* Share your local knowledge to add points of interest (POIs)
* Experiment with OpenStreetMap map-making and editing tools
* Swap tips on using OpenStreetMaps to navigate on your mobile
phone or GPS device

However, if you aren't sure what you can do, we'll be happy to provide
ideas and help get you started.

We have the meeting room booked from 18:30 to 21:00, but feel free to
turn up within those times whenever you like. We’re trying to organise
some alcoholic (and otherwise) drinks for the meetup, and we'll
probably order a few pizzas on the night. If you are coming, please
bring $5-$10 to help pay for this (we'll work out the specific details
on the night).

If you can come, please let David Dean know by Friday 18th June, so we
can have some idea of how many drinks to take on the night.

Contact David Dean on 0407 151 912 to RSVP or for more information.

[Bug 560664] [NEW] Audio doesn't work in alex4

2010-04-11 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alex4

I've just installed alex4 (Alex the Allegator 4) via the Software Centre
in ubuntu 10.04, but there is no sound. Sound is working in other
programs however. There are credits when exiting the game for sound fx
and music, so I'm fairly certain there should be sound.

The game doesn't appear to have any options to change the sound volume
so I'm not entirely sure what is going on. The man page doesn't seem to
mention any sound options either.

[Bug 561182] [NEW] Blobwars has no audio

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: blobwars

Blobwars doesn't appear to have any audio. The forum post at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9085663postcount=6 suggests that
this is because the blobwars audio is non-free.

Can it then be added as a non-free package? Or at least made clear to
the user why there is no audio and what they can do about it. Perhaps in
the man page.

[Bug 552289] [NEW] Ungrouping objects changes position of arrow lines

2010-03-30 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: inkscape

In the attached file TypicalASV.svg, all the objects are grouped
together into one object. If I open the file to edit it and attempt to
ungroup the object, all of the arrows move below the rest of the
objects. (see TypicalASV-broken.svg).

If I then try and move the arrows back to where they should be, they
always move to a position offset to the lower-left of where I place
them. This does not happen with the text areas, boxes or dashed line.

[Bug 552289] Re: Ungrouping objects changes position of arrow lines

This may be related to making the page size match the objects. If I copy
and paste the group into a new A4 Inkscape document everything appears
to work correctly. Just changing the page size of the original document
back to A4 doesn't seem to work though.

2010-02-23 Thread David Dean
Attaching /var/log/cups/error_log

While there is no option to print duplex available in the normal
location, there is a Print Type option in the Printer Options
section of the printer properties that allows for 1-sided or 2-sided
that appears to work as advertised.

[Bug 181915] Re: page scroll causes loss of context to the reader

2009-11-04 Thread David Dean
Just a quick note that a workaround that seems to work for me is to
peform the page-down by clicking on the empty area on the scroll-bar.
This seems to perform a more sensible approach, with only a line or so
of context instead of the much too large amount when the space bar or
page down is used.

[Bug 432235] [NEW] Konica Minolta C451 won't print double sided

2009-09-17 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: foomatic-db

We have a Konica Minolta C451 BizHub printer at work but the print
dialog will not allow me to select duplex printing, although it can do
duplex as evidenced by my work coleagues printing from windows machines.

The printers page at http://www.openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum
=KONICA_MINOLTA-bizhub_C451 also has a comment indicating that someone
has got it to work with duplex printing, but I can't seem to get it to
work, even though the ppd downloaded from that page is identical to the
one in my /usr/share/ppd folders:

$ zcat ./openprinting/KONICA_MINOLTA/KOC451UX.ppd.gz | diff -
/home/david2/Desktop/KOC451UX.ppd
$

I've also tried downloading ppd drivers from the Konica Minolta site
directly, but I can't seem to get duplex printing to come up as an
option in the print dialog no matter what drivers I select. I have got
duplex working well with other printers however.

Any workarounds or bug fixes would be gratefully appreciated.

[Bug 429125] [NEW] gnome-web-photo segfaults on simple command line usage

2009-09-13 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-web-photo

I'm using gnome-web-photo to download satellite imagery for the JOSM
Openstreetmap editor, but I am getting segmentation faults when using
gnome-web-photo:

This only started happening in the past couple of days, so this problem
may have been caused by a recent package update regression, but I'm not
sure how to check that.

[Bug 17962] Re: newly opened gnome-terminal windows don't have .bash_profile sourced

2009-06-22 Thread David Dean
So this has been reported a number of times in different guises .. for
example:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/72714

which links us back to:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=150521

Which shows that the gnome folk are not interested in fixing this.

So as a distribution, Ubuntu includes a .bash_profile which will not be
sourced if you're a local user. Seems odd.

And all the possible points of fixing it are marking bugs invalid:
- gdm bug? nope, gnome don't care.
- terminal bug? nope, see gdm bug
- ...

As an end user I just want my ~/bin/ to work, I don't much care how we
get there.

[Bug 341898] Re: MythTV Frontend does not work with RADEON DRI

2009-05-02 Thread David Dean
I've got a VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690
[Radeon X1200 Series] according to lspci, and I have just encountered
this problem with a recent upgrade from mythbuntu 8.10 to 9.04. My
versions of the mesa packages already match Mario's versions, but the
`XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 mythfrontend` workaround seems to fix the
problem for now.

What is the best way to apply this workaround so that I don't have to
start `mythfrontend` manually until a proper fix is released? I was
thinking of moving `/usr/bin/mythfrontend` to
`/usr/bin/mythfrontend.old` and making a new `/usr/bin/mythfrontend` be
something like:

 #!/usr/bin/bash -u
 XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 mythfrontend.old

Would that be a suitable approach while I await a proper fix in updated
packages?

[Bug 351545] [NEW] pidgin doesn't notify at start of conversation (libnotify)

2009-03-30 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

I'm running the Jaunty beta, and I cannot get the libnotify plugin to
show a notification when a new conversation has started.

Once the conversation is underway, I get the notifications coming up,
but they don't show for the first new message in a conversation. In that
case, I just get a window popping up showing the conversation (when I
would really prefer the notification without a new window).

The libnotify popup (version 0.14) configuration window has 'New
Messages', 'Ignore events from blocked users', and 'Buddy signs on'
ticked, but the rest are unticked.

The new jaunty notification popups are working for showing when a buddy
signs on (as well as wifi sign-on/volume changes/etc) so it is not the
notification that is broken.

I have confirmed that this happens for me on a live CD installation, so
it doesn't appear to be left-over crud from before the beta upgrade.
However, I never did manage to get the libnotify plugin to work properly
in previous versions either, but I got motivated due to the new jaunty
notification system.

[Bug 308855] [NEW] Wireless Card crashed and couldn't be fixed in Ubuntu (reboot into vista fixed it)

2008-12-16 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I have a HP 530 Laptop, and earlier today my wireless card just stopped
working in Ubuntu 8.10 and the 'Enable Wireless' option from right
clicking the network connection area in the panel became grayed out.
Clicking the wireless button on my laptop (which normally correctly
enables/disables the wireless) would not work at this stage.

Because it seemed like this might be a hardware fault I booted into a
copy of the Ubuntu 8.10 LiveCD (which I am fairly certain worked with
this laptop) and the wireless card still didn't work. At this stage I
strongly suspected a hardware fault.

So I then booted into the Vista installation software partition also on
this laptop (as I figured the service technitions would probably want me
to check if it worked in Vista). During the boot up processes of the
vista installation software I noticed that the wireless light was now
glowing, so I quit the installation before the EULA and rebooted into my
normal partition where the wireless now worked.

So basically the bug is that some weird quirk killed my network card and
Ubuntu didn't seem to be able to do anything about it, but the vista
installation pre-setup did fixed the problem, so maybe Ubuntu should be
doing that :)

I've reported this problem using ubuntu-bug so hopefully enough useful
files should be attached, but please let me know if any other
information might be useful.

[Bug 302006] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.10 Live CD appears to breaks Intel GM965/GL960 video card permanently

2008-11-25 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After using the Ubuntu 8.10 Live CD on my day-old Satellite Pro S200 the
video card (or LCD monitor) has broken permanently.

Now only the top half of the screen displays correctly, and the bottom
half is just random lines.

I have attached a lspci -vnn I managed to get using the console TTYs on
the live CD.

Everything was working properly until the video mode was changed during
booting of the Live CD, and now the video card appears to be permanent
broken (i.e. it doesn't work in bios, boot-up, windows or the live cd. I
don't have a monitor to check whether it would work with one
unfortunately.

I'm planning on returning this computer to the store tomorrow as it may
just be a one-off hardware issue, but I am reporting it here in case it
isn't a one-off issue.

[Bug 302248] [NEW] Find and replace dialog breaks document editing when exited with Esc key

2008-11-25 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lyx

When I pull up the find and replace dialog in lyx and search for a
string it correctly highlights the string in the document. However, if I
then press Esc on my keyboard to exit the dialog I can no longer edit
the document with my keyboard (shortcut keys, arrow keys, del,
backspace, typing, etc. don't work). If I switch to another program and
come back to lyx it works fine, so it appears to be a focus issue. This
bug doesn't happen if I click the Close button on the find-and-replace
dialog, but it does happen if I close it using the [x] window close
icon.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10

[Bug 302006] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 Live CD appears to breaks Intel GM965/GL960 video card permanently

2008-11-25 Thread David Dean
I've just taken the computer back and gotten a new one, but I'm a
little reluctant to install Ubuntu on it at the moment. However, I did
discover when the tech was checking it that the video card did work fine
with a monitor output, so it may be the LCD panel which is at fault. Is
it possible that it was sending invalid modelines and Ubuntu could have
broken it by putting it in an invalid mode?

[Bug 238032] Re: lircd doesn't find dvico usb IR remote device correctly (expects /dev/lirc)

2008-11-10 Thread David Dean
I just did a clean install of mythbuntu 8.10 on the machine in question,
and I'm not sure that the solution listed above is an adequate one to
the problem.

When installing I was asked where the device for the remote was located
and two choices were given (one was /dev/usb/hiddev0 and I cannot
remember the other - probably /dev/lirc I guess). How is the average
user supposed to be able to answer this question? I can only answer
because of a fair bit of googling I did back when I submitted this bug
report.

Surely this can be determined automatically in some manner to avoid
asking questions the user will be unable to give an answer for? In my
case only one of the listed devices actually existed in /dev anyway, so
what was the point of asking the question?
