Re: Package youtube-dl

2021-03-09 Thread Franklin Hunter
Without arguing specific packages, my actual observation is that there
are certain types of software that are resistant to the concept of a
"release". And when you have beautifully curated releases -- like Debian
does occasionally, and Ubuntu does on schedule -- and a written policy
like the SRU policy cited below, it makes a lot of sense to exclude such
software from your released repos. The number of exceptions within the
SRU document points to a systemic issue that would be best not to
address haphazardly, IMHO.

That said, there are a number of enterprise goals which result in this
sort of software being included with every version of Debian or Ubuntu.
People want a browser. People want malware scanners and security
auditors. People want drivers. People want to use current standards,
codecs, cyphers.and these are developed on a schedule outside the
control of Debian or Ubuntu. How can Ubuntu be held to LTS this sort of
package? Do the good people at Debian or Ubuntu want to be left "holding
the bag" when an item in their repo ceases to function during the
support period?

There is a certain element of culture that comes into play as well. How
many times have you sought customer service for a consumer product and
been asked, "do you have the current model?" What happens with a larger
software package or suite when they ask that question and you reply,
"but I used the version in the LTS repo!" Whether it's appliances,
automobiles, software, or mass-media, nobody wants to take
responsibility for the past..and they'll barely take care of the
now. LTS releases are welcome islands in a sea of flux.

I realize that some of these observations and questions dovetail into
discussions regarding snap or Docker images. As an alternative, each
distro might have an extra repository that doesn't do releases --
"Ubuntu UnReleased" or something -- where you do limited procedures for
compatibility (e.g. recompile with Ubuntu-preferred compiler flags), but
specifically disclaim that it will be maintained by anyone but the
developers (Essentially separating each "release" into a curated section
and a rolling current section.). Again, I look to the method that Ubuntu
Studio is using.

I do want to thank Gunnar for his initial reply and kind suggestions --
one of which I will likely implement shortly. But I wanted to return a
kindness for a kindness, and I could see a grave systemic issue being
dealt with as individual problems.I believe that you will soon be
forced into creating a systemic solution, because the issue isn't going
away -- and, in fact, the problems are getting worse as the flow of
problems accelerates. Accordingly, the earlier you address the issue,
get it understood, and undertake systemic reforms to have it addressed,
the better everyone's lives will be.

P.S. -- one of the many joys of Linux is that one can accumulate tools
for specific use-cases, rather than trying to pretend everything is a
nail for one's hammer. Brave is not my "daily-driver" as a browser --
which is a thoroughly up-armored Firefox that breaks about 30% of the
sites I visit. But there are times when I find Brave useful to have
around. It's currently implemented via a ppa (the mechanism of which is,
BTW, another data-point for my thesis). I think it would be great to
have minimally-screened versions of all major browsers available in a
single, secure repo.

On 3/7/21 8:45 PM, Zack Coffey wrote:

If I get a vote, it would be a solid NO for Brave.

The idea that a browser is using cryptocurrency to bait users,
behaviour tracking, serving ads while saying it's blocking ads,
changing referrer URLs to their own, and encourages users to nag
website owners to sign up for Braves BAT system and have agreements
with them... does not suit Ubuntu.

Honestly Brave is pretty much the opposite of what they say they are.
They are a company, taking open source Chromium and making money off
users. I do not support that and no distro should.

Hello, Gunnar.

For such a short reply, there was a lot for me to think aboutin
both what you said, and what you cited.

My original email had also included:

Is there an online form for this? I was reading info from "dpkg -s"
and "apt-cache showpkg" , so I can't easily see if Debian has or
hasn't rolled theirs. I'm thinking of something with visibility of
whether Ubuntu is getting it from developers or Debian, and how much
mucking is required to make it appropriate for Ubuntu.

This is Linux, and we can always do a ppa or compile our own, but
Ubuntu's package curation in its distros is highly valued and
appreciated. It'd be nice if we could see where more or less of that
    curation might be necessary.

I understood that there must be some policy for stable release
updates, because the Ubuntu project is known for its quality -- and
such a policy is necessary for consistent quality. After having read
the policy, however, I can see where some disconnects between the
policy and user expectations may be inevitable.

Let's start out with the easy stuff.

You say:

At the same time I know that youtube-dl upstream is updated
frequently, and that it's a pain to try use anything but the latest
upstream. IMO there are reasons to question why it's present in the
    Debian/Ubuntu archives at all.

Now that I've read the policy, I fully agree. The package youtube-dl
should not be in a repository under the current SRU policy. The
policy also notes various environmental exceptions in section 2.1,
particularly the fourth bullet point. Environmental circumstances are
also listed in sections 9.11, 9.23, 10.1 and, to a certain extent,
section 12. [Very likely, more sections of 9 would apply, but I'm not
sufficiently familiar with them.] Lynis should also not be in a
repository under current SRU policy.

Now might be a good time to reflect on what a policy is supposed to
be A policy should be a _framework of action_ to further
_enterprise goals_. The SRU policy is to further the enterprise goal
to provide releases (particularly LTS releases) that are rock-solid,
of the highest quality, and maintain functionality for the entire
support period. Packages are chosen to support this goal, and
supported (within SRU) towards this end.

Packages such as youtube-dl, all browsers, time zone data, and clamav
definitions (and lynis) _cannot_ fit within this definition. Rather
than individually carve them out, it should be recognized that a
different class of package is out there -- one that neither Ubuntu
nor Debian really control. They may be involved in an armaments race
(as various malware v. malware detectors and preventions) or in a
standards race, or in a race to keep up with political malfeasance
(tzdata). Why not recognize them as a class and deal with them
efficiently?

So, what are other enterprise goals? The impulse to include lynis,
youtube-dl, browsers, and other packages within a distro is driven by
a desire to be "complete" and "competitive" and be useful "as
installed". Those are entirely valid goals for the enterprise.
Furthermore, a distro may want to be "cool" and "popular" in order to
increase market share and/or support. It may also be that user's
expectations are that Ubuntu (or Debian) provide a "complete Linux
environment" that can be compared to other current Linux distros, and
provide immediate bragging rights over those who cling to Microserfdom.

These are all worthy goals for an enterprise that wants to survive --
though some purists may consider them crass. But where is the policy
for these goals? It struck me, while reading through the SRU policy,
that it was unclear where functionality suggestions might
originate.but it didn't look like there was any room for user input.

In light of current realities, I would suggest that there be a
further division of Ubuntu repositories for packages that users might
otherwise ppa, reviewed at a lesser level than would be appropriate
for other repositories, to achieve the enterprise goal of "complete
Linux environment" and useful "as installed". I should note that
something similar is done with Ubuntu Studio. All browsers probably
belong in this repo, as well as youtube-dl and security packages.
These packages stand or fall on their own, and (to protect the core)
they have been tested to not crash core functionality. This would,
BTW, make you one of the first distros to officially include Brave
and clarify your relations

Package youtube-dl

The version in focal is 2020.03.24-1 .

The developer is at 2021.03.03.

Can it get freshened?

Is there an online form for this? I was reading info from "dpkg -s" and

[Bug 1847776] [NEW] Certbot fails auto-account creation via ACMEv1 protocol

2019-10-11 Thread John Franklin
Public bug reported:

The certbot agent on 18.04 LTS is too old to automatically create
accounts at LetsEncrypt. When trying to run something like:

certbot certonly -m s...@example.com -n --agree-tos -d www.example.com

The following message is returned and no cert is generated:

acme.messages.Error: urn:acme:error:unauthorized :: The client lacks
sufficient authorization :: Account creation on ACMEv1 is disabled.
Please upgrade your ACME client to a version that supports ACMEv2 / RFC
8555. See https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/end-of-life-plan-for-
acmev1/88430 for details.

During October, this will happen when LetsEncrypt is running an ACMEv1
"brownout". See https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/end-of-life-plan-
for-acmev1/88430 for details.

No newer version is available in bionic-backports.

Public bug reported:

Testing Kubuntu 17.10.1 with test cases on

At step 33 the user login screen didn't show. It just stuck there
without any reaction.

I tested it on Virtual Box 5.1.30 r118389 (Qt5.6.1), the virtual machine
contains 2 CPUs and 2GB ram, 40GB HDD, 16MB display ram. No 2D & 3D
acceleration. UEFI turned on.

[Bug 1585592] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 - grub-efi-amd64-signed failed to install into /target/

2017-03-31 Thread Franklin
I'm still suffering from this problem.

When installing without internet connection, it would fail with this
error messages (attachment 20_05_30.png). Under this state, the
/var/log/syslog showed that it couldn't find package "grub-efi-
amd64-signed" and "shim-signed", which actually existed in the pool/
folder in the live USB (attachment 20_05_20.png).

I don't think it a GPT EFI-partition problem since I selected "using the
whole hard drive" and let the installer automatically partitioned it.
The partition table is "Valid GPT with protective MBR", as attachment
20_06_19.png).

With internet connected, it would succeed sometimes (but not always).

I think the problem is that, when installing grub-efi-amd64-signed it
couldn't read the CDROM repository. When internet connected it may find
the package in the repository other than the CDROM one. But I couldn't
find out why and had no idea about how to solve it.

Strong concurrence here. What’s the point of a distribution if not to provide
useful software, ready to rock?

Auto login didn't work after installation

2016-04-04 Thread Franklin Weng
Hi,

I'm trying Kubuntu 16.04 Beta2.

I checked "auto login" when installing, but after installation it still
asked for password in the SDDM login screen.

Then I went to the SDDM settings. Auto login options checked, and I
checked it again then auto login worked.

Please take a look at it.

Thanks,
Franklin

[Bug 1540415] [NEW] Ubuntu trusty failed to install in EFI system

2016-02-01 Thread Franklin
Public bug reported:

Upgrading ubiquity to the newest (2.18.8.11) could fail to install in EFI
system. Installation is successful, but it would create a "grub" folder under
EFI/boot instead of "ubuntu", hence dropped into grub shell right after booting.

Downgrading to the 2.18.7 (with adding a "flush=True" in
/usr/lib/ubiquity/bin/ubiquity around line 425) would work well.

[Bug 1521132] Re: Failed to install Xenial in UEFI mode, failed with "grub-efi-amd64-signed package failed to install into /target/"

The problem seemed to be that, when chrooting into /target without any
internet connected, the cdrom repository failed to update and hence
couldn't find grub-efi-amd64-signed.

Please see the pastbin:

In the live environment it could find, but failed to find it in /target.

[Bug 1331077] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540] suspend/resume failure

2015-03-22 Thread Matt Franklin
Bios update solved the issue for me. This pages details how to do so:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgrade#On_Debian_and_Ubuntu

I didn't have much luck with the primary method, however the
genisoimage method worked perfectly for me.

[Bug 1333107] Re: After Lockscreen Textbox Behave Strangely

2014-10-04 Thread Matt Franklin
I have exactly the same error. As stated above, keyboard letter P
upper or lower case can be typed without causing the attempted new
folder to disappear. The workaround I have been using for this is first
creating the folder in Nautilus, where there is no issue, and then
saving files into it from within other programs.

[Bug 1319501] [NEW] Login doesn't report errors

2014-05-14 Thread John Franklin
Public bug reported:

When Drupal 7's BlogAPI module has MoveableType enabled, but not
Blogger, the XML RPC method blogger.getUsersBlogs is not available.
Drivel attempts to log in, hits this error and stops. Done is
reported in the status bar, but the editor window is never opened. To
the user, there was no error, but no success either.

Running drivel from the command line shows the error Drivel-Message:
Drupal bug: faultCode: -32601. faultString: Server error. Requested
method blogger.getUsersBlogs not specified.

Some sort of error should be reported to the user.

Linux Mint 16 Petra
Installed 3.0.5-1 (saucy/universe)

[Bug 1294268] Re: Touch selection applies to wrong monitor.

2014-04-04 Thread John Franklin
I'm able to get similar behavior without an external monitor. If I open
two Terminals, I can move one by touching the titlebar and dragging my
finger across the screen, as expected. When I try to drag the other
Terminal window, the first one moves, even if my finger is nowhere near
the first window.

If I tap the second window, it will get focus, as expected. If I then
try to touch and drag the second (now focused) window, the first one
receives focus and moves.

Using the touchpad and/or mouse does not demonstrate this behavior.
Only the touch screen gives me trouble.

I'm running Ubuntu Gnome and Gnome Shell on an Acer V5-122p.

[Bug 1025598] Re: shotwell doesn't get the new pictures since a few days

2013-12-31 Thread William Franklin
I just wanted to update, upon import however it appears that out of 250+
photos, 40 or so weren't able to be imported due to some sort of file
incompatibility. But I double checked and it appears that these work,
so there may be a couple glitches, however the majority of them were
fine, and imported w/o fail. Again, this is on Ubuntu 12.04.

[Bug 1025598] Re: shotwell doesn't get the new pictures since a few days

2013-12-31 Thread William Franklin
I am a little late to the party, however I briskly read through the
majority of the comments on this and the related threads. I have a
Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and I had this problem. However, it stems I
believe from the MTP, and the new setup from the new USB protocol upon
the phone's connection. When plugging mine in I had to switch its
function from normal media device(MTP), to Camera(PTP). This is in the
notification drop down menu, which comes down from the top of the
screen, and on my Samsung Galaxy Note2, I found it was in the topmost
window below the general settings horizontal slide toolbar. My Motorola
XOOM, which operates on an older OS, w/o MTP, does not have this
problem, and I tested it just again to make sure. Thus, the MTP causes
problems, and thus Shotwell isn't the cause. Hopefully this helps! Also,
I am using Ubuntu 12.04, and to get my Galaxy Note 2 to work I
downloaded the latest backported openMTP ppa, with the link enclosed
below:

https://launchpad.net/~langdalepl/+archive/gvfs-mtp

Hope this helps!

[Bug 1207749] Re: kubuntu 13.04 installation aborted: grub-efi failed to install in /target/

2013-08-07 Thread Franklin
I got the same problem here.

I have a laptop which pre-installed Win8. I disabled Secure Boot and
partitioned the disk myself.
Installing Kubuntu 12.10 from live USB was okay (though I still need to run
boot-repair after installing, but at least there was no problem during the
installation). However when installing Kubuntu 13.04 I got the same problem.
It showed a dialog saying grub-efi package failed to install in /target/,
then ubiquity told me it crashed.

After crashing if I ran boot-repair, it would be possible to boot, but
all the splash screen or plymouth screen would disappear. Just pure
text with a lot of boot messages, then lightdm started.

Updating to kernel 3.8.0-28 (download deb file from proposed repository)
would solve this problem.

However I still couldn't understand why ubuntu 13.04 wouldn't have this

[Bug 1205268] [NEW] After upgrading to KDE 4.10, ksnapshot crashed when clicking Send to

2013-07-26 Thread Franklin
Public bug reported:

Please see the attachment. ksnapshot crashed while clicking Send to.

In the backtrace, though it didn't have enough debug symbol and
information, we could still see that ksnapshot called KIPI:PluginLoader
from libkipi.so.9, but after calling kipi plugins it called KIPI:Plugins
from libkipi.so.10.

A fresh kubuntu 12.10 install would not have problem before updating, since
they all run on KDE 4.9 (libkipi9).
After upgrading to 4.10, digikam depended on libkipi10, while ksnapshot
(4.10.5) still depended on libkipi9

$ ldd /usr/bin/ksnapshot | grep kipi
  libkipi.so.9 = /usr/lib/libkipi.so.9 (0xb735d000)

If I link /usr/lib/libkipi.so.9 to /usr/lib/libkipi.so.10, it would have
symbol problem like:

$ ksnapshot
ksnapshot: symbol lookup error: ksnapshot: undefined symbol:
_ZN4KIPI12PluginLoaderC1ERK11QStringListPNS_9InterfaceERK7QString

Removing kipi-plugins packages can avoid this crash happening.

[Bug 1094555] Re: deluge crashed with EOFError in /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gobject/__init__.py: EOF read where object expected

2013-01-06 Thread John Franklin
Fixed this by going to synaptic, searching for installed 'python', and
reinstalled all of them. Consequently, this also fixed a similar
problem with Miro.

This problem is most likely specific to this one circumstance due to
system crash. Feel free to mark this as some sort of non-issue.

[Bug 1090124] [NEW] Symbols not shown

2012-12-13 Thread John Franklin
Public bug reported:

Character map only shows alpha-numeric characters (incl accents) but no
symbols, even if a font such as OpenSymbol is selected. Indeed, if I
select the OpenSymbol font, the display doesn't change at all from the
previous font. The symbol fonts are installed - I can see what I want in
LibreOffice or GIMP for example. The KCharSelect program also doesn't
show the symbols. What's wrong? Using Ubuntu 12.04.

E pior do que isso, é que o modo de apresentação do Impress sempre
 vai
   para
monitor errado.
Ou você já descobriram como fazer para a apresentação fica no
 datashow
(considerando um monitor e um
data-show.)

 colocou
a apresentação no monitor o controle no projetor. Mas foi só usar o botao
  de trocar no
console para inverter. Mas bem eu isso já podia vir por padrão.

[Bug 1033240] [NEW] Intent to Package new software: Daimonin MMORPG

2012-08-05 Thread Franklin Barnett
Public bug reported:

I'm requesting that the Daimonin MMORPG package for Ubuntu and Debian is
added to the Ubuntu repositories. I've looked into adding it to the
Debian repositories but DFSG compliance is a bit too much of a burden
for our current development setup (although I believe after our next
major release we can be compliant).

I am willing to create and maintain the package. As a developer for the
game I can ensure speedy updates for the package. The client's source
code is licensed under the GPL.

[Bug 1032704] [NEW] exportfs tool does not support ipv6 addresses

2012-08-03 Thread Greg Franklin
Public bug reported:

The exportfs tool doesn't support ipv6 addresses.

For example, the following does not work:

exportfs -o rw 2001:db8:9:e54::/64:/srv/export

The above command returns the following error:

exportfs: Invalid exporting option: 2001

If we were exporting to a single host, it would be possible to use the
hostname. However, since we're trying to export to a whole subnet there
is no way to do it using the exportfs utility.

It does work if you have an ipv6 subnet in /etc/exports but we're using
it with corosync/pacemaker which calls the exportfs utility directly.

[Bug 1000342] [NEW] Mode_switch key sticks

2012-05-16 Thread Franklin
Public bug reported:

I've mapped Alt_Gr and ';' to Mode_switch with xmodmap

keycode 47 = Mode_switch NoSymbol Mode_switch
keycode 108 = Mode_switch NoSymbol Mode_switch

Alt_Gr works as expected, ';' works well only when used by itself.
When used with Ctrl or Shift, sometimes(especially when the non-modifier key is
tapped quickly)
the keyboard sticks as if mode_switch caps lock was turned on.
Now to type the regular keys I'd have to hold Mode_switch.

To reproduce the bug:
Hold Ctrl+; and tap a letter key quickly. After few trys the Mode_switch will
stick.

[Bug 982820] [NEW] Greybird metacity window title off-centre

2012-04-16 Thread Jo Franklin
Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is a bug or a feature but the Greybird metacity window
title is off-centre.

This is due to the following lines of code in
/usr/share/themes/Greybird/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml

!-- ::: TITLES ::: --
draw_ops name=title
title color=shade/gtk:bg[NORMAL]/1.30 x=((width - title_width) / 2)
-36 `max` 0 y=1 `max` ((height-title_height)/2)+1/
title color=shade/gtk:bg[NORMAL]/0.50 x=((width - title_width) / 2)
-36 `max` 0 y=0 `max` ((height-title_height)/2)/
/draw_ops

draw_ops name=title_unfocused
title color=shade/gtk:bg[NORMAL]/1.15 x=((width - title_width) / 2)
-36 `max` 0 y=1 `max` ((height-title_height)/2)+1/
title color=shade/gtk:bg[NORMAL]/0.70 x=((width - title_width) / 2)
-36 `max` 0 y=0 `max` ((height-title_height)/2)/
/draw_ops

To centre the titles the -36 should be changed to -0.

This also exists upstream in the theme available from the shimmer
project's own website, so may be a design choice rather than a bug.

[Bug 864764] Re: empath forgets accounts 11.10

2012-02-21 Thread Franklin Strube
This happened to me as well, and I believe the reason was due to
Likewise-Open AD integration with a custom home directory (%H/%D/%U
instead of the default %H/likewise-open/%D/%U).

I ran sudo dpkg-reconfigure apparmor and then specified
/home/DOMAINNAME/ as an additional homedir. I no longer see apparmor
messages when I run dmesg.
