OTOH, you can't choose Ubuntu as the OS on the site when you actually try to buy one, but I've been told that you can buy them if you phone them (and maybe point them to their obligation to sell what they promise). Knowing both worlds puts you in a much stronger position. Inderdaad om in te gaan op je laatste opmerking, ik heb daar ook wel enig punt in, er is nog niet genoeg materiaal voorhanden om een cursusaanbod op maat te kunnen maken over open-source, ubuntu/linux ed. Doorom werd er op de kickoff meeting een oproep gedaan naar mensen die dit zouden willen. Ik wou initieel wel mee op de kar springen maar omdat ik nu zelf opleiding tot netwerkbeheer en helpdesker volg, heb ik daar de tijd niet voor. Ook vrees ik dat dit topic een beetje stil gevallen is, maar ik zou er graag enige kleine stukjes aan willen bijdragen in mijn dagen dat ik vakantie heb eventueel. Ook een leuke babbel gehad met Roel en zijn zoon die zijn Drupal cusrsussen promote, en die vooral voor scholieren en studenten en grote inspanning doet om betaalbare cursussen te organiseren. Knap. Ik moet ook nog even opmerken dat de ter bischikking gestelde hardware uitstekend was, en Guy een toffe gast is die ook heel wat verwezenlijkt heeft, kijk maar eens wat voor een waanzinnige creaties hij heeft gemaakt: http://linux-service.be/ , en naar ik begrijp alles zelf gedaan met zijn broer, inclusief al het laswerk! Als er mensen zijn die niet goed durfde deelnemen omdat ze niet wisten wat ze zouden moeten doen, of er niemand kende, volgende keer gewoon meedoen! Ik ben doorgaans absoluut geen sociaal beest, en voel me het beste thuis voor m'n scherm, maar ik ben gewoon gegaan en het was zeker de moeite waard! I would but I rather not think about that school again, had some isuues with some off the profs there when I studied at REGA. Dat is inderdaad een hele goede methode, vraag geld voor de installatie en de werkuren, daarmee neem je me de woorden uit mijn mond, ging ook zoiets zeggen, het zat in mijn gedachten. Maar deze zal niet veel gedownload worden omdat de mensen hem niet echt weten staan. De linux cd's zouden moeten via computerleveranciers verdeeld worden (zoals het met windows is). Verkoopprijs zou ik zeggen vb 45 € = 37,19 zonder btw en 7 € voor de winkelier. Resultaat linux (fabricant ubuntu of andere) heeft er zelf nog € 30 aan over. Die € 30 moeten ze integraal uitgeven aan marketing en reclame (als extra aan dat ze nu al doen). € 30 maal duizenden verkochte cd's dan heb je snel een aardig bedrag om vb. in kranten reclame te zetten of zelfs met tv spots. RECLAME = VOOR IEDEREEN VERSTAANBAAR en geen superintelligente reclamespots zoals ik indertijd nog gezien heb van IBM. Verstaanbaar, goed uitgewerkt, zoals de reclames van vb belgacom (gewoon voorbeeld hé). Zelfde met OpenOffice.Org laat die dan wel nog downloadbaar zijn maar vraag vb. € 20 per download. Je zal zien dat de mensen graag die € 20 zullen betalen, voor een product dat eigenlijk perfect hun wensen beantwoord. In vergelijking met MS Office die €139 kost voor een studente versie, is het dan nog bijna niets. Nog een kleine opmerking voor de mailinglist : Altijd alles in het engels doen schrikt af ! linux is voor nerds als je wilt dat dit niet zo is doe dan ook niet zo. Ik weet dat hier in de mailinglijst voor meer dan 95 % vlamingen zitten. Slechts een heel klein beetje Walen, wel laat die een eigen lijst maken eventueel samen met Frankrijk als ze met te weinig zijn. Wij Vlaamingen werken ook veel samen met de nederlanders. I totally agree with this, finally my dad has seen the last straw in his struggles with fucked up microsoft machines and the fact that I can't even fix many off them anymore, cause I'm almost totally kicked off from using that very bad system. I once knew every aspect off that other OS for doing maintenance, now I've forgotten them all, but I know a lot off Unix-tools instead and my dad sees it to and we are now using and assessing it in our home environment. Let them learn the hard way, because they won't take the easy way. The grandson comes to her house and brought with him, indeed an Ubuntu disk, granny got interested and she even completed the installation off Ubuntu herselve, okey not that hard, but then she directly moved on to get stuff done on the computer and her very first OS ever, now she can even work herselve around in the filesystem, she can install software herselve and she is wild about her blazingfast computer. Need I tell you people any more, the persons we need to target are those who are willing to learn and that willingness should by no means be delimited to students or youngsters or young adults or even just adults. As long as they want to learn and want to face that it is different than other systems and want to change the way they work, or even want to discover it themselves, then we can get happy users, who will spread the word about Ubuntu or Linux in general. ULB has, on the Solbosch campus, 150 m from the FOSDEM central point, the university restaurant where 600 people can have a beer and dinner together. If the university is asked enough in advance, and the money is secured, it can provide very good food (cold and warm), at an affordable price, with a nice location where many people can attend and stay together. I am ready also to organize (with the needed help) this and be the intermediary. The only condition for a satisfactory organisation would be that the people register and pay in advance the meals they would like to have (to minimize the financial risks). 4/ Taking the opportunity of the large gathering of people interested in developping FLOSS applications, who often like the idea of sharing, and remembering the success of the education track organized in 2002 if I am right, I would like to organize an activity dedicated to Education. This activity would *not* be aimed at the developpers themselves, but more be aimed at European (Belgian, Dutch, French and German first as they are the closest) teachers willing to share their experiences of FLOSS in education with the developpers, meet the developpers, ask them questions, listen to them ... In order to be successfull, such a meeting need to be organised well in advance to be announced to the teachers who do not follow the FLOSS informations and react much slower. I speak out off experience here, I followed teachertraining in informatics for a year and you are looked upon ugly when you take the word Linux in your mouth even. It was like I was some evil culprit in that group, but I got my right in and we even held a themeday about FLOSS in education on my advice, hehe even way before I was an addicated Linuxuser. I just started to test with it back then. But really the gap must be closed and if you can bring teachers and devellopers together they can sync their experience to create better educational FLOSS software. Just my 2 eurocents. Op FOSDEM hoorde ik dat ubuntu vertegenwoordig wordt op VLOD, en ik hoorde dat vrijwilligers om meet te helpen daar nog welkom zijn. Vandaar ik me hier even aanmeld. Ik zou de volgende zaken kunnen voorstellen, (met behulp van demo's desnoods); (allemaal software voor het secundair onderwijs) - Kig / Geogebra (meetkunde pakket ter vervanging van Cabri) - Kalzium (zeer handig pakket voor de chemie/fysica leraar - Celestia (Aardrijkskunde) - op mijn laptop bevindt zich ook een ti-83 emulator, maakt komaf met de dure projectietoestellen - KmPlot (functies plotten, en er wat basisbewerkingen op uitoefenen) - KTouch (kan dienen al vervanger van Typtop, dactylografie) - OpenOffice.org pakket - etc... Als ik de agenda controleer zie ik dat VLOD van 5 tot 8 maart loopt. Ik zou natuurlijk willen helpen, maar ik heb wel elke dag les. This would be a really nice illustration of the problematic interoperability between Microsoft Office versions, _and_ a nice illustration of OpenOffice.org's import/export capabilities. More in general, we need to be careful to keep the message simple and consistent. One attracts potential users with familiar sounding words: Firefox for surfing, OpenOffice.org for docs presentations, Linux under the hood talking to the hardware. One deflects potential users with unnecessary complexity. For a thing I finally got a conversion on my hand, just because I pointed at the available software that runs on both systems and also the fact that he is a programmer and that Ubuntu/Linux provides a lot off programmingtools out off the box. Referring to that one, it was my prime reason to make the switch in the first place.
