[EMAIL PROTECTED]:A very good idea ;-))
Mailing list is very unstructured 2006/9/3, PingunZ [EMAIL PROTECTED]
:

An
Ubuntu-Art forum.

This is a text based on an idea I had
when I joined ubuntu-art.

I modified it a month later, so that I
wouldn't tell any lies :)
The general idea is an artwork forum,
replacing launchpad, the wiki and the Mailing List.
It explains the difficulties for
beginners and tries to solve those problems.
Enjoy :)

a ) Current State.

- Register to launchpad.
- subscribe to the mailing list.
- Join the irc channel.
- Register to the wiki.

This causes a lot of work to stay
updated.
You'll have to check your mail, the
wiki and launcpad.
Eventually even join the irc channel.

b) Future State. ( With the forum )

- subscribe to the forum.
- Eventually subscribe to threads /
forum sections.
- Join the irc channel.

A forum is easier to join and to stay
up-to-date.

c) Goods.

- Forums are more structured.
- Its easier to join, attracts more new
artists.
- Easier to stay updated.
- No more refering to wiki's anymore,
just post the image.
- Easier to post and find guides.
- Discussions and feedback will be
easier to track
- Only one site to check.
- Proposals, mockups are easier to
publish.

d) Bads.

The risk of spam, flaming, .. But that
is also possible in the mailing list.
Feel free to add some :)

e) Forum Layout.

Support
: Questions about program functions can be found here.
Bugs :
Current bugs in the artwork can be posted here.
Produce :
Icons, wallpapers, *DMs, usplash', ... The real produce phase runs
here.
Howto's and guides
: User posted guides about making art or using programs,..
Incoming
: Members post mockups, others revise it. Maybe even realise it.

Projects
: New programs or projects can be introduced here.
Calendar
: The ubuntu-art Calendar.
Artwork Cafe:
A place where artists can chill out after a hard day of work.

f) Goal

The
goal of this idea is really simple, attract more artists to join
ubuntu-art.

And let them work more structured.

Re: [ubuntu-art] [REQUEST] Sound designers?

2006-08-02 Thread Niklas Weidel
I like to tip. =)Well, since I'm not around my studio at the moment I don't have any hands-down examples. But I was thinking about a sort of soft choir with some rhythmic percussion pad. That would give it an organic sound, while a good use of the stereofield and clever reverbing could make it quite vivid. But I think it would be quite nice to get away from the sampled synthesizer sound that every OS has had since the days when the dinosaurs walked the earth. :)

How about updating that for Edgy, with a glossy wheel/Ubuntu logo or something?I personally, think that xubuntu needs a splash update that brings itmore in line with the other siblings. The rotating mouse was good for

Looking forward to it! And plugin approaches depend on the use of the plugins. :) Good plugins and plugin use shouldn't be noticable as plugin effects on the art (which is rare, I agree). If you version-save, just a few different snapshots of the stages of the artwork would do quite nicely, when you have the time for it.

theme words for me for edubuntu would probably be in line with calm (promotes concentration), relaxed, openminded, serious, reliable, inspiring and creative. I know some of those might seem opposing to one another, but it's what pops into my head.

Dear Artworkians,I'm posting up here to ask for people's help/advice/contributions to theartwork package in edubuntu for the edgy release. We have never had anartwork team before, and I'm keen to make a good impression this release.
I think, being a lot free-er this release with regards to artwork willbe of great benefit to edubuntu, although we still have to be carefulabout the quality of the work we include.I have seen some great
texture work going on in the ubuntu-artwork team and would like toreplicate that feeling of artwork themes in edubuntu.Last release we had the normal theme and a young theme.I'm hoping
to do the same this release with the inclusion possibly of ahigher-edu theme that can be used in universities.I know that thereis some talk from some people about having a branding engine for edgy.
My hubby, cbx33 is starting to look into that and I believe that thatwould be a key feature for many institutions. At the same time, forthose who do not have the time or the inclination, I think it is vital
to provide them with a theme that does not patronise their institution. So I'm asking for what theme words people would like present inedubuntu this release, for example, young, fresh etc.If you can't seem
to find the word but know an image that embodies the feeling you aredescribing, link us to it, and we can see if we can think of it.I'll then start putting together a wiki page of all the ideas we come up
with, so we can collaborate on themes and ideas.Once again I'd like to thank everyone who helped previously on dapper, let's make edgy rock ever more :pAliasVegas--ubuntu-art mailing list

[ubuntu-art] New papers for that wall!

2006-07-21 Thread Niklas Weidel
Once more I've played around with some wallpaper ideas. For those wondering why I'm pumping out these things, it's my own little way of experimenting up a feel and form in my own head. Each idea directs the next one, and I think I'm starting to home in on a pretty decent edgy-look.
The first one on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/EdgyProposals/WallpaperProposal which I've named 'glassflower' is my personal favourite so far. It's a distinct look, and retaining some simplicity while at the same time being pretty detailed. The reason for it was that I was experimenting with fully glossy backgrounds, and I just didn't like it as a full background since it takes too much focus. I usually prefer light abstract colours. But in order to connect the glossy perspective we wish for Edgy, I created a reflective center in the middle of the flower pattern. Best of both worlds. :)
Been playing around with the color of the glassblob in the middle, and most colors look pretty neat, but I settled on a yellowish in order to not break too much from the background palette. I've upped a 1600x1200 version of it on my wikipage too, it's linked from the proposalpage.
The second one is too light, ofcourse, but it's a swiveling pattern I was experimenting with and slapped in a little branding.Third one is a simple abstract reflective 3D render, which I've layered up to smooth out from the center out to create a little macro-effect.
I'm also starting to get intrigued by the usplash right now, so I might soon have some ideas there as well. He who lives shall see.Cheers/weidelPs! Feedback regarding the walls is very useful, even if it's only a statement on which is your favourite, as it helps me work out what to think about next time.

http://www.weidel.se/gfx/desk1_withlogo.png And without the logo. It has almost a painted feel. Wanted to keep it organic, a little strange and unique. The original blobs were generated by a filter which i've tweaked. It *is* a bit cluttered, i

http://www.weidel.se/gfx/desk1_nologo.png Here's the textlogo. It's a somber look, not really shiny-gloss. If we want to opt for brighter colours, it could go bright like the previous logo, but it looks real strange with dark browns in those cases. Will
try a brighter one later on. http://www.weidel.se/gfx/textlogo.png http://www.weidel.se/gfx/textlogo.psd

2006-07-14 Thread Niklas Weidel
Personally, art.ubuntu.com is nice, but there are many many alternatives out there with vastly better content and system. While I do feel the artsite would have a great place in the community, I also feel that it should be remade from the ground up to really offer unique services since it is ubuntu-only in a way. Considering the earlier posts regarding the CMS, this confirms this. I for one would love to see the submissions in a dedicated artsite like that to become automatically included in some sort of special synaptic-version, so when going into the system settings to change theme one can simply click a button there to see what's available in the sites database seamlessly.
Off the point though.Regarding CMS, as Neil said, there is no shortage of great, free CMS-systems. I've been using Joomla for example, which has a lot of plugins that could form a basis for an easy-to-handle artwork site.

What's short is someone to devote the time to getting the system up and
running. Does anyone want to volunteer to make that happen? I think
having an art.ubuntu.com is preferable to a simple gnome-look
redirection because gnome-look IIRC has constraints on branded images
which art.ubuntu.com would obviously not have.

I like it a lot, especially the second logo which is a bit lighter. Maybe try to make the chrome edges just a few pixels smaller, they're the attention grabber right now, not the whole. Just my thought. Good work!/weidel

Hi all,These are some of my explorations in the direction of developing a newfeel for the logo an gdm greeter screen for Xubuntu/edgy.https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XubuntuEdgySpecs
The logo has been given a chrome treatment to make it more lively; thebackground of the login screen uses flat colors in order to keep thefile size down, which is a basic requirement for xubuntu.
Please note that these artworks are still a work in progress.I am also thinking about using only the logo in the greeter and getrid of the wording 'xubuntu' What do you think about this idea? Please give me some feedback.

[ubuntu-art] 16 colour glassy

2006-07-13 Thread Niklas Weidel
As we discussed earlier, glassy effect in 16 colours could get interesting. Actually, what I noticed is that due to the limited palette of Ubuntu, it's pretty easy. Look at the attached example of my previous logotype which I simply downsampled to 16 unique colours - looks pretty good imo! No tweaking needed.
I'll look into if there's some from-the-scratch methods that might be useful for 16col, but as it looks we can go pretty advanced in the glossy effect as long as we keep to the restricted ubuntulogotype palette.

2006-07-13 Thread Niklas Weidel
Oh, here's the palette I've used. Actually the logo and effect uses 14 colours, as one is reserved for white and one for transparancy. So there's plenty of room for a background colour in the boot and a text colour. I attach both a photoshop palette and a windows .PAL. Sorry about my windowsness, but gimp simply isn't my cup of tea.

Regarding Niel's work on logoproposal, I would say that the top left one has the best lighting - if it could be centered just a tiny bit so the last u has the same shade as the first. When one edge of a text like that is darker it offcenters it.

[ubuntu-art] Wallpapers and logos

2006-07-13 Thread Niklas Weidel
I've been playing around a bit with both desktop ideas and the textlogo. I know we're in a basic-ideas-phase, but as usual I couldn't stop, so these are somewhat advanced.First off is a little wallpaper thing I got together, with strange little soft spotthings (looks like bloodcells sort of) and a reflective ubuntu-logo just for show.
http://www.weidel.se/gfx/desk1_withlogo.pngAnd without the logo. It has almost a painted feel. Wanted to keep it organic, a little strange and unique. The original blobs were generated by a filter which i've tweaked. It *is* a bit cluttered, i suppose, but I've found no good solution for that yet, and I'm quite convinced it's a habit thing when using the wallpaper. I have it on my desktop now and will see how it works.
http://www.weidel.se/gfx/desk1_nologo.pngHere's the textlogo. It's a somber look, not really shiny-gloss. If we want to opt for brighter colours, it could go bright like the previous logo, but it looks real strange with dark browns in those cases. Will try a brighter one later on.
http://www.weidel.se/gfx/textlogo.pnghttp://www.weidel.se/gfx/textlogo.psd - photoshop original for your tweaking enjoyment
Here's a little fractal wallpaper I've messed with. Not ubuntu-coloured yet, just a draft.http://www.weidel.se/gfx/Fractal1_1.pngSame one sombered down and coloured. Really like this one.
http://www.weidel.se/gfx/Fractal1_satin.pngAnother one from the same base (believe it or not), very non-intrusive and clothy and just a tad more interesting than a single coloured background. :) Still, I can't help but like it.
http://www.weidel.se/gfx/Fractal1_satin2.pngThat's it for me! Hope it might inspire someone. Let me know if you want PSD's for the wallpapers.

Re: [ubuntu-art] REQUEST: Glassy samples

2006-07-10 Thread Niklas Weidel
Feel free to use the glassy ubuntu-logo I've upped earlier for logon/isplash. I'll see if I can make some complete variants, but I'd rather have them connect in some way to the desktop background for a really sleek feel.
Glassy in 16 colours can be done, results depending on how many of those 16 colours are to be used in the glassy effect apart from background, other objects etc. I'll see if I can mash something together tonight.
I'll also look into doing ubuntu-coloured glassy look, it will likely require a different use of shading and effects to come off right.Do we have a colour palette for non-gimp/inkscape, seeing as I work best in expensive software? :)

Do we have coders working on usplash, or just implementing it? Would be real nice if it could be modernized a bit to incorporate some moving graphical elements, such as a simple animation or such. [ubuntu-art] Schedule-thought

2006-06-26 Thread Niklas Weidel
Just a small thought for the edgy-schedule; the headings could be a bit more obvious, for example there's Ponder two time in a row. It's not very obvious, at least to me, that the second of these is meant to represent the end of that activity. It would be wiser to label them Ponder start and Ponder end to make it crystal clear. To me, it looks like two dates that are designated to Ponder, and not a period between them. :)

More viable here is that I also have had a career in an advertising agency as graphics artist and layouter, and have diplomas in digital graphics. I have also been running my own business with a friend since 1997, designing websites, intranets, doing filmwork etc.
Currently, I quit my job as an IT drone (cheer for me!) to pursue more rewarding things, so I'm studying at Hyper Island School of New Media at the moment, a 2 year education in project management and with a focus on digital media. Right now I'm on one of the internship periods, and the last three months I've been sitting in a huge media consultancy firm (Carat / Aegis Media) and will work there over the summer.
But I have a great urge to do more graphics works, or at least help others with it, and seeing as I've just fallen in love with Ubuntu I'd like to contribute in any way I can. I believe the Ubuntu project is an important and vital step for the desktop OS-market.
