[Bug 1876758] Re: Menu bar missing for various applications

2021-12-21 Thread Troy T Collinsworth
Found the fix on the interwebs -
https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/ubuntu-20-04-no-menu-bar-in-
libreoffice/53831/2

sudo apt remove indicator-appmenu

And then after rebooting there will be some errant entries in the top menu.
Press Windows key + alt key and right mouse click and remove the errant top
menu entries that appeared. Then the window menus will appear.

I totally agree with the poster where I found the fix - With each
release of Ubuntu since 14, it gets worse, but he said 10. I thought it
got better till 10, then worse after 14. I absolutely hate the newer
interfaces and find I have to do more install and exotic configuration
with each release, 18 and now 20.

This is not fixed. After a day installing Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS and Gnome

[Bug 1881832] Re: Ubuntu server 20.04 fails to get IP address from DHCP server (no network connectivity)

2020-11-30 Thread Troy High
I have the same issue with my Ubuntu Server 20.04, after each reboot, I
only appear to get IPv6 from DHCP.

Manually renewing using:
sudo dhclient -r eth0 & sudo dhclient eth0

Resolves the issue but I would like to find a way to consistently get
both IPv6 & IPv4 on eth0 every time I restart.

[Bug 1776873] Re: Whitelisted allowedURLschemes breaks some desktop apps

2020-04-23 Thread Troy Ready
With respect, I think focusing on an improved response time for the PRs
is missing the forest for the trees.

The vast majority of users that experience these bugs won't be the ones
to make Ubuntu SSO & GitHub accounts and contribute PRs to fix it.
They're just going to get a silent launch failure, and tell their social
circles about how Ubuntu doesn't work. For snap's long term success,
there needs to be a stronger focus on a good user experience or we're
just going to lose users.

The only reason we don't see more of the errors now is that the default
browser (Firefox) isn't shipped as a snap, and I really don't like being
happy about that.

Fundamentally I think there needs to be a bigger focus on a user-
friendly solution, something like the proposal to make all system
registered apps work by default, or anything else like that.

[Bug 1776873] Re: Whitelisted allowedURLschemes breaks some desktop apps

2020-04-03 Thread Troy Ready
Can anyone help with a workaround suggestion while we're waiting for
this to get fixed?

I normally manually patch package issues like this, but for some reason
it doesn't seem to be working in this case:

```
TMPDIR=$(mktemp -d)
cd $TMPDIR
apt-get -y source snapd
sed -i 's/"http", "https", "mailto", "snap", "help"/"http", "https", "mailto",
"snap", "help", "apt", "zoommtg", "slack"/'
snapd-2.42.1+19.10/usersession/userd/launcher.go
cd snapd-2.42.1+19.10 && dch -l$(hostname) fix_missing_app_types
cd ..
cd snapd-2.42.1+19.10$(hostname)1 && DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nocheck debuild -b -uc
-us
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i snapd_2.42.1+19.10$(hostname)1_amd64.deb
```

It seems to be updating /usr/bin/snap properly, but the xdg-open is
still blocked.

[Bug 1776873] Re: Whitelisted allowedURLschemes breaks some desktop apps

2020-03-23 Thread Troy Ready
I agree @cpbl -- there are almost certainly better options available.
Maciej Borzecki detailed a good proposal at
https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/pull/7731#issuecomment-585721100 (with
some follow-on thoughts added by jdstrand at
https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/pull/7731#pullrequestreview-362900171),
but at this point it's up to someone to implement it.

I just did the easy/lazy small Zoom PR, since I'm just an internet rando
without time at the moment to develop the real fix.

Unless something dramatically changes here in the next couple of weeks,
I think anyone wanting a simple way to get the old xdg behavior on 20.04
is going to forced to:

1) Use Google-supplied binary Chrome
or
2) Switch distros

I chose the option to erase Ubuntu 17.10 to install a fresh copy of
Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 and a message eventually came up during the

[Bug 1766015] [NEW] Session crashes, returning to login screen

2018-04-21 Thread Troy Greer
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, while using my computer, everything on the screen just
freezes (but audio keeps playing) and then a couple seconds later,
everything is black (and audio stops at this point), and then I am
brought back to the login screen. In addition, the numlock light on my
keyboard is lit up, but numlock is actually turned off, requiring me to
hit the numlock key again. I don't know if using two HDMI monitors at
once is relevant or not.

[Bug 1724897] [NEW] package libtbb-dev:amd64 4.4~20151115-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: package libtbb-dev:amd64 is already installed and configured

2017-10-19 Thread Troy
Public bug reported:

Accidentally installed package matlab-support without prior matlab
installation. Could not uninstall. Deleted all associated files
manually.

I noticed the 'System Problem' after resizing partitions using gparted.
Now I get the 'System program problem detected' pop-up after login on
each boot/reboot.

Useful information:
I am using Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS

I cannot get the package version using the command given:
   apt-cache policy pkgname
   N: Unable to locate package pkgname

I had Cuda working fine before handling these issues, now I get a cuda
error. I also noticed my .bashrc file has been cleared, and believe that
to be causing the cuda error.

I'm not sure that I would jump directly to the bug being in Judy. Judy
is a VERY mature library that has been widely deployed for over two
decades. As you noted there were reports of compiler optimizations
leading to some crashes but a root cause was never identified for
those specific reports. Unfortunately, being a library means that there
is always additional third party code involved which makes debugging
quite challenging.

The best suggestion that I can offer at this point is to have you post
directly to the upstream Judy mailing list for additional assistance.

[Bug 1631191] Re: Display backlight won't turn on after screen timeout

2017-02-03 Thread troy
I have same issue as Robert stated above ("Upon waking an Oryx, the
screen comes back, but there is an issue where the screen flickers along
the x- and y- positions relative to the mouse") Also when this happens
there are times my mouse cursor will disappear followed shortly after by
complete system freeze up. Also I noticed this seems to occur more often
than not when the laptop is running on battery. While it does still
occur, it is far less frequent while plugged in.

[Bug 1610952] [NEW] upgrade error

2016-08-08 Thread Troy
Public bug reported:

upgraded system from 14 to 16.04. LTS using the online system updates that are
regular used by my as this is my workstation.
Once finished only one of three monitors would show the desktop and login
prompt.
Once my password was entered a short dialogue box appeared and it showed I had
an error.
The screen with in about 3 seconds after I typed my password was able to show
the error which was ambiguous, the logged me out. I was stuck with a system
that runs my workstation, and unable to login.
I chose to use a DVD and run the set-up from a disk, I had done the online
update option. Once I did this I was able to work. I did choose to save my
previous OS, however now I basally have a triple boot system, as I already had
a dual boot, from Debian 8 , to Ubuntu that works fine, now I have a generic
Ubuntu that is at the latest version, my set-up working upgraded system which
works, and my other Debian system that works, Then I was able to go in and
change my graphics card to use the non generic drive and login and set it to a
nvida.  All works now.

[Bug 1537566] Re: LibreOffice crashed but apport didn't log a crash file in /var/crash despite being enabled

2016-06-19 Thread Phil Troy
I have LibreOffice 5.1.3.2 installed via Lubuntu 16.04 Software Center.
It crashes an awful lot. In particular, it crashed Lubuntu while
working on a writer document document, and each time I relog in and try
to have it recover the document and crashes Lubuntu again. I am using
synergyc 1.5.1 on my machine.

[Bug 1502598] Re: Boot hangs on encryption password prompt on 3.19.0-30

2015-10-05 Thread Troy Ready
The same issue is affecting myself and a colleague - everything is
working correctly with patch levels before -30, but -30 causes the
encryption prompt to appear distorted (like a strange zoomed resolution)
and the keyboard not to function.

[Bug 1494092] [NEW] After docking/undocking, tooltips cause the UI to become briefly unresponsive

2015-09-09 Thread Troy Jacobson
Public bug reported:

I have a Thinkpad T520 which I use frequently both undocked and docked
with dual monitors. It all works fine when it is first powered on in
either configuration, as well as when it awakes from sleep. However,
once I switch to the opposite configuration from the initial power-up, I
experience brief moments of unresponsiveness. I switch between
configurations by entering suspend (sleep), either docking or undocking
the laptop, and then returning from suspend mode.

The unresponsiveness is most often triggered by tooltips appearing in
any program, and the system remains unresponsive until the tooltip
disappears. The behavior may occur for other types of windows or UI
components, but I can't say for certain. When I'm experiencing this
issue, the mouse moves and most screen updates still happen (It will
cause most video playback to pause, however). However, mouse clicks and
typing are ignored or queued up.

I'm using Ubuntu 15.04, with the nvidia-355 binary driver. I've used
other versions of the nvidia driver, and they have all exhibited this
behavior or had other issues. I don't recall having this issue with
14.10, but I can't confirm it.

[Bug 1422016] Re: Kernel panic during system boot with sched_autogroup_enabled = 0

2015-02-22 Thread troy engel
I confirm it's fixed in 3.19.0-031900, it's still broken in 14.04.02 LTS
with kernel 3.16.0-30-generic. With further testing, whatever is broken
was fixed between 3.18rc2 and 3.18rc3 kernels:

 Broken: 3.18.0-031800rc2 [1]
 Fixed: 3.18.0-031800rc3 [2]

The number of commits between these two is rather high making it
difficult to easily spot what may have fixed the bug; the diff from rc2
to rc3 is 621,132 bytes. The test setup is easy - using VirtualBox,
create a new VM accepting all defaults. Install 14.04.02 LTS using all
defaults, all very generic. In all broken cases specifying noautogroup
on the kernel params bypasses the bug.

I was able to record a MKV @100fps and extract two PNG files showing the
best I can capture; it goes by so fast that even at 100fps I can't
capture a few missing lines.

[Bug 1013945]

2015-02-11 Thread Troy Sankey
Created attachment 5918
inactivity slider now uses exponential scale

This is only slightly related, but it caught my attention because
testing the previous patch was awkward. IIRC, OS X (or GNOME 3, I don't
quite remember) has some of their inactivity sliders on an exponential
scale. This is much more user-friendly IMO. This patch adds that
feature to the inactivity sliders, with an exponent of 2.0, giving more
fine-tuned control between 4 and 60 minutes.

lowers the minimum inactivity duration from 14 to 4 minutes

Here you go. This one even allows down to 5 minutes. I lightly tested
it, and it seems to work. For convenience, here are the commands to
fetch the relevant properties from the relevant channels (for testing):

  $ xfconf-query --channel xfce4-power-manager -p
/xfce4-power-manager/inactivity-on-battery
  $ xfconf-query --channel xfce4-power-manager -p

2014-10-26 Thread Troy Dack
Looks like
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mountall/+bug/1384502 might be
relevant to this bug as well.

FWIW this has bitten me too.

Looking at dmesg idmapd is called for each mount point in /etc/fstab and
then killed (TERM), this all appears to happen _before_ the network
interfaces are brought up.

[Bug 1372120] Re: setcifsacl errors out, package missing idmap-plugin symlink

2014-09-21 Thread troy engel
Looks like this missing plugin behaviour was fixed in release 6.2 of
cifs-utils:

https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/LinuxCIFS_utils

October 4, 2013: Release 6.2

setcifsacl can now work without a plugin
systemd-ask-password is found using $PATH now
cifs.upcall now works with KEYRING: credcaches

[Bug 1365126] [NEW] Screen Shaking Up Down

2014-09-03 Thread Troy Greer
Public bug reported:

Essentially, my graphics are usntable. The display moves up and down
rapidly in a flickering-like fashion whenever I turn on my Lenovo
IdeaPad N580 or wake it up from sleep mode. The shaking up and down
nearly stops after a few hours of running the laptop, only moving up and
down once every 1 or 2 seconds, so that I can still use the laptop, but
it still hurts my eyes and gives me a headache.

The problem began soon after wiping Windows 8 from the laptop an
installing Ubuntu 13.10. Recently, I finally got around to upgrading to
14.04 LTS, but I had to create a boot flash drive because the software
updater wasn't working correctly at the time. Anyway, a fresh install of
14.04 LTS fixed the problem for a few days, but it came back again. I
don't know if it's from one of the updates released, since it was after
updating all of the packages that needed updating, or if it's just a
conincidence that it wasn't happening.

It's a 64-bit laptop (Intel Sandybridge Mobile Graphics), so I replaced
64-bit Windows 8 with 64-bit Ubuntu. I can't help but wonder if possibly
using a fresh 32-bit install would fix this issue, as a very undesired
workaround, but I would much prefer a proper update or a link to any
drivers or packages that should be installed.

[Bug 913273] Re: PCManFM consumes 90% CPU

2014-08-29 Thread Phil Troy
I had the same problem with Lubuntu 14.04 when I started my computer (a
laptop) with a second display.

A workaround is to turn off the second display automatically when the
computer starts (in an autostart file in
/home/user/.config/lxsession/Lubuntu) - I used xrandr --output VGA1
--off since I was using a vga monitor for my second display.

I then ran a desktop file then calls a bash file (perhaps overkill) that
sets xrandr the way I want it.

I think that the key is that you have to get down to one display (your
primary display) and then start up the second display. When I do it
this way it uses the desktop image file correctly, and my pcmanfm cpu%
never goes high.

Phil

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Privacy, Trademark Canonical

2013-11-07 Thread Troy Ready
Doesn't seem that bad to me. I could agree that it's against the spirit
of open source, but they've put a ton of time and money into promoting the
brand of ubuntu and I don't think it's unreasonable for them to be wary of
allowing very negative websites using that branding to go unanswered.

[Bug 1158529] Re: gvfsd-http memory leaks

2013-05-16 Thread Troy Topnik
I suspect it is an instance of this bug:

 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=639777

I'm hitting this as well, with gvfsd-http eventually consuming almost 1
GB of memory on my system, so it's an important bug for me.

Similar to what the Totem user in the Gnome bug report is seeing, this
is triggered on my system by opening http audio streams in Rhythmbox
2.98. After that, and even if the stream or Rhythmbox itself is closed,
memory usage continues to creep up.

[Bug 1090925] Re: software-properties-gtk silently crashes when sourcegear repository is enabled

2013-04-16 Thread Troy Stanger
I spent today debugging the issue with the diffmerge package
(disclaimer: I am the one that built it originally). It turns out the
error was that the control file had the wrong line endings (CRLF instead
of simply LF). I have fixed the issue on our end and will be rebuilding
the deb.

[Bug 1163068] [NEW] Wifi disconnects after a certain period, then refuses to reconnect

2013-04-01 Thread Troy
Public bug reported:

I've had problems with the WIFI on this machine in Linux since I bought
it; I'm not entirely sure if they're driver or NetworkManager related.
Under my (relatively) new Xubuntu install, the problem is that my wifi
connection will often drop after a time (I estimate around an hour), and
will then fail to re-establish. Typically this manifests as showing that
the adapter is connected to the network, but not getting any network
access (e.g. in a browser, from ping). I find that I can sometimes fix
this by disabling the wifi adapter entirely, then turning it back on.
Sometimes that doesn't work and I need to restart the machine.

I've had no problems at all with wired networking. Here's my wireless adapter

In this case Red Hat is referring specifically to netdump i.e. Red Hat

[Bug 1085783] Re: Kernel Panic

2013-03-04 Thread Troy Telford
I'm unable to run apport-collect; the system just crashes before it
finishes.

As noted, I have no issues when using kernels in the kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.5.7 line.

I'll add that I can add additional systems which seem to be affected to
the list:

- My Dell 6950's (AMD CPU's) appear to crash for the same reasons.
- An additional model of Lenovo desktop.

Unfortunately, the systems which crash need to be in production use, and
as switching to the newer kernel fixes the issue for me, until there's a
definitive fix for this bug, I won't be able to do much more to debug
the issue for a while.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] RMS vs. Amazon search results feature

2012-12-13 Thread Troy Ready
I think the disclaimer is enough, and hope the furor over this dies down
soon. We have real enemies to fight, and fighting against Canonical (or
ensuring it never reaches profitability) will not fix bug #1.

For the people that have a problem with the behavior, Canonical has made it
exceedingly simple to disable it.

 What is the objection about Canonical making money in Ubuntu given the

[Bug 878062] Re: Installer removes packages, but fails to update package database

2012-12-04 Thread Troy Thompson
I had the exact same results as Marshall and tried several of the things
he did. I had the grub error as expected and my machine also has SSD
and was installing from a flash drive. I was installing the 64bit
version of Ubuntu.

Thanks to his additional feedback I was able to solve the problem in the
same method he did. I was able to duplicate this error sequence twice
due to unplanned fresh installs recently.

I am currently unable to reproduce the bug with the kernel cited
(3.5.7.1-quantal).

Looks promising...

[Bug 1085783] [NEW] Kernel Panic

2012-12-02 Thread Troy Telford
Public bug reported:

I've reproduced this bug on two systems (same make/model)

I can reproduce this kernel panic by doing the following (from a fresh
kubuntu install)

1.) Home directories are NFS-mounted (SSO with kerberos LDAP)

$ apt-get build-dep zeroc-ice
$ apt-get source zeroc-ice
$ cd zeroc-ice-3.4.2
$ dpkg-buildpackage

very shortly after running dpkg-buildpackage (somewhere between the
patches being applied to the source and compilation begins (I'm not
seeing the typical output of ./configure) the system crashes with a
kernel panic.

I hooked up a serial cable dumped the console to it, so I could catch
the crash, and the output is below.

Additional:  I installed http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.6.3-quantal/linux-
image-3.6.3-030603-generic_3.6.3-030603.201210211349_amd64.deb (and its
headers). The 3.6.3 kernel runs without issues, and I've been unable to
reproduce the crash. So it seems likely that the problem is with the
3.5.0-19-generic kernel package.

[Bug 179139] Re: Intel Wireless Restrictions: ipw2100, ipw2200 are not Free

2012-09-27 Thread Troy James Sobotka
Actually, I don't believe I ever requested that Intel change their
license.

I merely was suggesting that A) it was in the wrong package, and B) that
in order to abide by the license the individual be presented with a
popup.

Of course, while the new license might be sufficient, it is clearly
outlined in http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=faqs=license that the
older license for which this report pertains, is still in effect for
both of the drivers.

QUOTE
A. The important point is to make sure that the end user is notified that the
firmware component is governed by an Intel license and provided with a copy of
the license terms prior to downloading or using the software.
/QUOTE

There is also mention that a header license agreement could cover their
distribution.

While I have long since moved on from this, I suspect that the statement
All ipw2x00 and iwlwifi firmware files now have appropriate licensing.
is actually incorrect as outlined in the link:

QUOTE
Q. The license for the binaries needed with the newer projects (ipw3945 and
iwlwifi) seems much cleaner than the license for the ipw2100 and ipw2200. Can
you change the terms of the older license?

[ ipw2100 and ipw2200 specific ]

A. Unfortunately, no. Those binaries contain intellectual property licensed
from third parties, and Intel must follow certain contractual obligations in
licensing for those components. The ipw3945 and iwlwifi related binaries are
all Intel-developed, and we are able to use a simplified license for that
product.
