[Bug 62685] Re: [Edgy regression] Hostap driver for PRISM2 wifi card not working any more

2006-10-19 Thread Joe Clifford
I am experiencing the same problems in an up-to-date edgy. Has the fix
been released because the problem still exists on my machine? My wifi
card worked well with the hostap drivers in dapper. My card details are
similar to Pascal's above:

I tried adding the card to /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf after blacklisting
the orinoco_cs module like this:

card Generic 11Mbps WLAN PC Card
version Wireless LAN, 11Mbps PC Card, Version 01.02
   manfid 0x0156, 0x0002
   bind hostap_cs

but it doesn't seem to work (because of new pcmcia system??). I also
tried to compile the hostap drivers from the hostap-source package but
it would not compile (maybe I should raise another ticket for this?)

In my experience ASCII strings get into MySQL okay. Strings containing
non-ASCII characters either cause an error or a warning. Here is a way
to reproduce the UnicodeDecodeError.

I am using:
mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.22, for pc-linux-gnu (i486) using readline 5.1
Python 2.4.3

[Bug 27859] Re: date stamp and su failure

2006-10-19 Thread JonathanTurner
I've had similar events happen to me. With my clock set to 9:30pm in
Windows -- when I reboot to install Ubuntu/Kubuntu the clock there also
shows 9:30 in the bottom right. The datetime/timezone setting of the
install however shows 5:30. If I correct this and install the install
time is 1:30 of the next day, even though both the datetime/timezone and
the clock in the bottom right showed 9:30.

Strange, no?

Fixing the time of 1:30am back to the correct 9:30pm after the install
seems to break kdesu in KDE.

[Bug 67048] apt-index-watcher takes too much cpu

2006-10-19 Thread Alberto Torres
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt-index-watcher

This daemon takes 100% cpu a fraction of a second every 9 seconds or so.
This is very noticeable (and annoying) when using cpu-intensive
multimedia applications, such some jack apps or some video players. The
new (propietary) flash player 9 beta plugin is specially sensible with
this.

This daemon and its children processes should run at minium priority, or
make a better workaround (possible solution as far as I understand it:
rebuilding the apt-front indexes each time apt/aptitude terminates and
apt package index have changed).

[Bug 67049] Live CD - installation process stalls and freezes the computer on Dell Inspiron 6400 (+ Wrong resolution an no acceleration for x1400 ATI)

2006-10-19 Thread Menez
Public bug reported:

Configuration :
Dell inspiron 6400
Intel CPU dualCore : T2400 1,83Mhz
ATI x1400
1,5Mb RAM
WXGA screen (1280x800)
Intel Wireless

Comments :
- After booting with Live CD (Rc), and clicking on Install, chosing language
etc. : Installation process starts and eventually stalls and freezes the
computer : tried 3 times. Fails (stalls) at 36%-39% of the process ant makes a
loud beep! (P.S. : I checked the CD)

Other :
- Wrong resolution for my WXGA screen + no video acceleration (ATI x1400)
- I found the partitioning part a bit confusing : there should always be a
graphic showing which partitions will be used fir the installation. Most people
have no idea what sdb or sda, or hd0 partion 4 and 7, etc. are. Not that
obvious. Had to go back and forth between Gparted and the installer to make
sure I was not erasing anything.

Thanks. keep on the good work.

[Bug 64424] Re: selector does not allow me to choose the other disk

2006-10-19 Thread BillHannah
I can also confirm this bug. When the partition manager starts, it
recognizes my 2nd HD (which is hdb), and offers to reformat the drive.
However, I already had 3 partitions on this drive (1 ntfs, 1 swap, and 1
ext3) and don't want to loose the ntfs partition. When I go to manually
edit the partition table, it scans hda, and shows the 2 windows ntfs
partitions, but I am unable to select hdb with the button mentioned
above. I'm not sure that the fact that I already have a Dapper install
on that disk is the issue. However, gparted is reporting the right type
of hard drive, and not labeling it as a SCSI drive.

[Bug 67054] Errors about locale when dist-upgrade from dapper to edgy.

2006-10-19 Thread Matt Sicker
Public bug reported:

If I attempt to do an apt-get dist-upgrade from dapper to edgy, most
packages emit this error when configured:

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = en_GB:en_US:en_GB:en,
LC_ALL = en_GB.UTF-8,
LC_PAPER = en_US.UTF-8,
LC_ADDRESS = en_US.UTF-8,

LC_TELEPHONE = en_US.UTF-8,
LANG = en_GB.UTF-8
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale (C).

Now if this truly isn't setting the locale anymore, isn't this going to

[Bug 67057] libscim-dev should depend on scim-gtk2-immodule

2006-10-19 Thread Ming Hua
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu's scim package put /usr/lib/libscim-gtkutils-1.0.so.* into binary
package scim-gtk2-immodule, instead of libscim8c2a. Therefore libscim-
dev should depends on scim-gtk2-imodule as libscim-dev ships the
/usr/lib/libscim-gtkutils-1.0.so symlink.

Currently this problem makes many packages, which Build-Depends on
libscim-dev, and uses libscim-gtkutils-1.0.so, FTBFS. From Lucas's test
(https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
devel/2006-October/021858.html), three main packages (scim-hangul, scim-
chewing, and scim-tables) and two universe packages (scim-prime and
scim-thai) FTBFS, and I suspect they are all due to this bug.

The package scim-pinyin fixes the FTBFS by adding scim-gtk2-immodule as
a build dependency. I believe that's the wrong way to fix, and
obviously doesn't scale.

[Bug 67036] Re: Getting Started - a gripe

2006-10-19 Thread David Symons
The Burning the ISO section should be put before the mirror lists on
http://www.ubuntu.com/download.

My thoughts on usability are that someone goes to ubuntu.com, clicks on
download, then clicks on their country. Many won't check what's further
down on the download page before heading to the mirror.

The other two sections are OK at the bottom - Ordering Pressed CDs at
the bottom is OK because there's a link to Shipit - Free CDs on the
top right anyway and the Source Code section isn't important to
installation either.

[Bug 67059] X does not resume after opening laptop

2006-10-19 Thread jond
Public bug reported:

I have a thinkpad T42. This bug happens everytime I close my laptop lid.

Steps to reproduce
1.) Boot and log into the Ubuntu desktop.
2.) Close laptop lid.
3.) Reopen the lid and find a blank screen.
4.) Slam keys to attemp to bring screen back (this is futile effort).
5.) hit ctrl+alt+F1 to go to console, then ctrl+alt+F7 to get back to X.

One would expect to enter X as soon as the lid opens, or at the very
least after I hit the any key. If I hit ctrl+alt+F7 I don't get back
to X. I have to go to a terminal first.

[Bug 67060] senao nl-2511cd pcmcia - wrong driver loading

2006-10-19 Thread djhampster
Public bug reported:

When plugging in the senao nl-2511cd pcmcia wifi card the orinoco
drivers are loaded as well as the hostap. Yet, the orinoco driver is
being used instead of the correct hostap driver. The hack workaround
is to blacklist the orinoco_cs in /etc/modprobe.d/*.

Adding a stanza for the exact manfid ('cardctrl ident' == manfid:
0x000b, 0x7100 ) in /etc/pcmcia/config does not load the hostap_cs
driver, it still loads the orinoco_cs driver.

The orinoco driver works but is hugely less functional than the built in
hostap driver!

I upgraded to Edgy, and the problem is fixed with the new kernel or

Just thought I'd let you know for people having the same problem in

[Bug 67061] Crash printing from openoffice in dapper

2006-10-19 Thread KarlGoetz
Public bug reported:

Using cups [1], and openoffice [2], when trying to print a document the
terminal (booted over ltsp) crashes out to the login screen after
functioning for up to a few minutes.

I think I traced the problem to the users .cups/lpoptions file which had the
following two lines in it:
Default Optra-S-1855 Duplex=None InputSlot=Default
Dest Phaser-780 Resolution=600x600dpi

When these lines were replaced with the one following, the system stopped
crashing, and started to print.
Default Optra-S-1855

Steps to repeat:
Launch writer
- File
  - recent documents
Scroll down to page 3 of document.
- File
  - Print
- Select printer (Phaser 740, network printer)
- Print range : page 3
- Options
  - Black and white ticked
  - Leave print hidden page ticked.
  - ok
- ok to print.
  - warning about transparent objects, select no
  - press 'print/ok' (whichever it is)

If you need any more info on the server setup (or the file which causes
the crash) let me know. I didnt test on other files.

[Bug 56090] Re: Regression: Webcams using pwc driver produce all-grey images

2006-10-19 Thread Edmund Laugasson
It seems like Canonical, Ltd. does not have priority to fix this bug. Or
there is not enough resources (skilled people and/or time) to fix bugs.
I've noticed huge amount of bugs in launchpad.net - it takes long time,
when they could fix them with current tempo. I think there is no point
to release new version of Ubuntu if old bugs are not fixed and with new
release are coming new and worse bugs (e.g. some main and important
features like scanning, printing or webcam does not work even if they
worked with earlier versions of Ubuntu or with other Linux distros).

When scanning discovered broken at Dapper Drake (6.06), they said - it
will be fixed in Edgy Eft (6.10). But what about if I would like to use
scanner and webcam in the same operating system? It seems like you
should have separate Ubuntu versions on separate PC-s or under VM Ware
(which is working under Windows...) to get support to main hardware. In
the beginning also printing was broken in this enterprise ready Dapper
Drake... Thank God they at least fixed printing and I stayed to Dapper
Drake and sacrified scanning lack.

Thanks,
Edmund Laugasson

[Bug 67063] No way to alter Launch Feedback via System Settings

2006-10-19 Thread Brian Beck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings

On the Edgy Eft RC Live CD, the System Settings is missing the ability
to turn on Launch Feedback (the bouncy cursor icon). When you type in
feedback into the search text area the note to the right says 1 hit
in General, but all the icons are gray. The option thankfully is in
Kcontrol. However, a new user will not know about Kcontrol. Please
either put Launch Feedback back into System Settings or make Kcontrol
the default configuration tool for Edgy.

Thanks.

[Bug 64264] Re: Editing the menu doesn't update correctly after changes

2006-10-19 Thread Pete Ryland
Ok, I've been looking at this and I think I've worked out what is going
wrong. It is indeed in gnome-menus, and it's not passing on the
notifications from gnome-vfs that the .desktop files have been
created/changed/etc. I'll post a patch shortly. This will also close
five or six other duplicate bugs.

[Bug 52852] Re: MacBook gets extremely hot under Linux

2006-10-19 Thread David MacIntosh
This may be a fix.

A new GPL'ed OSX application called smcFanControl allows a user to
control the minimum fan speed on Intel MacBooks through a simple
interface. It appears that this minimum fan speed setting carries over
into Edgy without issue on a multi-boot system, but more testing is
needed.

A firmware upgrade helped cool the CPU temperature on my MacBook from
70C+ to 55C-60C during extended normal use. With the above fix
[minimum speed of 4500rpm (will probably lower this later)], my current
temperature is 41C after an hour of normal use.

It's nice to have a MacBook that I can call a laptop. I hope this
continues to work without issue.
