[Bug 58424] Re: Can't calculate the upgrade with unofficial mesa/compiz packages

2006-10-23 Thread Michael Vogt
I uploaded a new version of the dist-upgrader that should be able to
deal with this situtation. It will be available in the archive soon and
I would appreciate testing from people who haven't manually resolved the
issue yet. What out for a directory called 20061023.1441 in
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/edgy/main/dist-upgrader-all/ if
you want to test it.

Thanks,

2006-10-23 Thread Colin Watson
There normally are logs when installing from the live CD. I didn't ask
for them in the live-CD-specific installer just for fun, you know. :-)

Anyway, this particular error is usually due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or
drive. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower
speed, or to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often
available from electronics suppliers).

[Bug 59498] Re: .png not opening

2006-10-23 Thread Giovanni Rapagnani
Hi there.

I have the same problem with png images.

I've downloaded the file PNG_transparency_demonstration_1.png and when I
try to open it I get the same security message as follows :

``The filename PNG_transparency_demonstration_1.png indicates that
this file is of type png document. The contents of the file indicate
that the file is of type PNG image. If you open this file, the file
might present a security risk to your system``

It seems this problem has something to do with the shared-mime-info package.
I have found a similar bug here :
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6577

I have Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake
shared-mime-info version 0.17-0ubuntu11

Thanks for any help.

the site has a problem.

You can figure out your language preferences in IE by clicking Tools --

one of them is Languages. Click that and please report the list shown.
Doing so will allow us to find the broken translation and resolve this.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 61234 ***

According to posts on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1522748 this may
be down to the BIOS version of the Dell Latitude D505 (working with A09, not
with A10).
Though here:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-i810/+bug/61234
the problem may be partially fixed by using xserver-xorg-video-intel

[Bug 67751] Just does not update packages

2006-10-23 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
Public bug reported:

The update-notifier icon tells there are upgrades, I show the upgrades,
and I click on the button to upgrade the system but... nothing happens,
except I see a progress bar again and the update-manager windows remains
identical. If I right-click on the icon notification icon, the system is
upgraded so this is strictly an update-manager bug.

If there is anything I can do to help please contact me, we can even
arrange an irc, skype or yahoo_messenger meeting, but absolutely this
bug must be fixed before leaving the RC phase or many users will try
ubuntu and abandon it; the update-notification is one of the very first
things an user sees, and first impressions count more than all the rest.

I googled and found an italian forum with many users complaining, and
nobody found a solution. I need instructions on how to downgrade a
pacakge or fake its downgrade, in order to activate the icon again and
be able to report more information.

Re: [Bug 59591] Re: Ubuntu Eclipse is ridiculously slow

2006-10-23 Thread Mathieu Avoine
Matthias,

Thanks for the info!

It appears to me however that, since not having eclipse-gcj installed slows
down eclipse to a level that it is barely usable, the package should not be
optional. I know that the running JVM is configurable but you have to look
for it. I guess that most people upon first install will run Eclipse with
the JVM installed by default (is GCJ the JVM installed by default? correct
me if I'm wrong) and will file in more bug reports because the application
does not seem to work well at first sight.

I agree that this is not a bug, rather a usability/installation issue in my
opinion, but still an issue.

What do you think?

Math

[Bug 48284] Re: Ubuntu Server LAMP 6.06 in VMWare on WinXP hangs after installation

2006-10-23 Thread Pekka Pietikäinen
Server kernel is configured with PAE support (i.e. 4GB support). Not
all CPU's support this (Mostly laptops that don't...)

Just about nobody needs it anyway, even on a server, it makes things
slower if you don't need 4GB of ram (And anyone with 4GB should get
a 64-bit platform anyway ;) )

In any case, the installer should check for support for this bit
(/proc/cpuinfo ;) ) and install a non-PAE kernel by default if it isn't
supported. Preferably leave PAE for -bigiron where someone might
actually need it ;)

[Bug 67753] Save button not activated after text import.

2006-10-23 Thread Daz
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I am currently importing data from a webpage using copy and paste. The
text is copied from a textarea box (in Firefox), and then pasted
straight into my spreadsheet. When I paste into the spreadsheet, I am
see a prompt asking me how I'd like to import the text, which gives me
several options for importing the text from the clipboard. Once the
import is completed, I would like to save the document before pasting
more data on the spreadsheet, however, the 'Save' icon remains disabled,
and CTRL+S does nothing either as the 'Save' option in the 'File' menu
is also disabled.

The only workaround I have been able to use so far, is to manually type
something into an empty cell, then delete it, which enables me to save
the document.

This still appears in Edgy. In bug 59210, which seems to be a duplicate
of this bug, it is stated that this has been fixed in Java 1.6:

[Bug 67754] Gimp crashed after saving a PNG file

2006-10-23 Thread Shane O'Connell
Public bug reported:

I opened a JPG file in gimp, resized it, and saved it as a PNG. I then
used the PNG in a html page as an image, and when I loaded the page in
the browser, gimp crashed.

Since I'm using edgy, the crash reporting thing popped up and saved a
crash file. I then installed gimp-dbg, and ran apport-retrace on the
crash file. (This is what I'm supposed to do, correct?)

Not sure if it's relevant, but the image in question was in a directory
that was mounted over the network using cifs/samba.
