[Bug 126444] Re: [gutsy-tribe2] on tty0 fails to shut down ltsp thin clients
This popped up the other day, and we talked about it quickly in #ubuntu- devel. The problem is due to the fact that the /etc/event.d/ctl-alt-delete file does a full shutdown, which does things like unmount nbd mounts before it's finished shutting down. Two solutions exist: 1) Changing the shutdown -r call to a /sbin/reboot command, which was decided was ickygross, and against debian policy since it's a conffile, or 2) clean out all the shutdown scripts in /etc/rc*.d using update-rc.d tools. ogra said he'd have a looksee. I think that should address the issue. [Bug 134713] Re: Strange sound when booting Kubuntu 7.04
Here is some additional information. In the last couple of hours I have learned a little bit about systems logs. The missing codec information mentioned above is exactly the following (from the kern.log file) : hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC883, trying auto-probe from BIOS... But this probably will not be it since the same message appears in all logs since I installed Kubuntu, which was 15 Aug 2007 (it means that this message was there even when the sound was NOT there.) Should kern.log files be needed for further analysis I can provide them on request. [Bug 134846] akregator disables all video on Dell GX110
Public bug reported: On my Dell GX110 Small Form Factor machine on 6.10 Dapper Drake, opening a akregator feed in a tab in the internal browser that causes a notice about "popup block options" has caused the same problem three times (including once after the latest kdelib upgrade). The problem is complete loss of onboard video, including consoles. (The monitor has vertical bars, and then loses synch.) I can log in blindly and sudo shutdown -r, though. This seemed like an akregator issue, or possibly a quirk of the onboard video. But I've had no other obvious problems with video, and I spotted a word in syslog that seemed similar to something I saw in the description of kdelib changes, something about "slaveio." Here's the segment of syslog that seems relevant: Aug 25 21:46:32 localhost -- MARK -- Aug 25 22:00:57 localhost gdm[4245]: Error reinitilizing server Aug 25 22:01:02 localhost gdm[6109]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restart ing :0 Aug 25 22:01:07 localhost gdm[6123]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restart ing :0 Aug 25 22:01:13 localhost gdm[6133]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restart ing :0 Aug 25 22:01:13 localhost gdm[4220]: deal_with_x_crashes: Running the XKeepsCrashing scr ipt Aug 25 22:01:18 localhost pppd[5045]: Modem hangup Ideally, I think I'd like to adjust X files or something to be able to access whatever debug information akregator offers when this happens. The main reason to split up the package into -core and -extra is to save space on the Live CD. As the italic ones are not really needed on the Live CD, those have been put into -extra. As the experimental ones will presumably change in the future to become stable ones, a separate -experimental package does not make sense to me. Therefor, the -core packages of the fonts only contain the absolute minimum needed to display characters in decent quality on the Live CD desktop. And the essential ones are normal and bold styles (bold for headings, normal for anything else). This help contents a lot of useful information for a new user (like "how to install new software" etc), and I'm sure the ones who need those informations don't know it exists and search the web, forums, wikis, or IRC to find what they want. The solution : I suggest that after the installation (at the first boot), Ubuntu open yelp (the system help), so the new user is not lost with a new system that he doesn't how to use it ... and can learn the basics of Ubuntu (how the desktop is organized, how to install a news software, etc). We can compare this with the guided start tour opened in Windows XP after the installation ... to introduce the user with the system. I've used the temporary work-around of removing the Gutsy gnome-session 2.19.90 and installing the Feisty 2.18.0 version. Uninstall the Gutsy gnome-session v2.19.90 package 3. Install gnome-session v2.18.0 4. Edit the apt preferences file to pin gnome-session so it won't be accidentally updated At the GDM log-in prompt *before* logging in, switch to a virtual terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, and log-in the do the following: $ wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gnome-session/gnome-session_2.18.0-0ubuntu3_i386.deb $ sudo apt-get remove gnome-session $ sudo dpkg -i gnome-session_2.18.0-0ubuntu3_i386.deb $ sudo nano /etc/apt/preferences Add the following 2 lines then save the file and exit with Ctrl+X: Package: gnome-session Pin: version 2.18.* Put ubuntu-desktop back: $ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop Now switch back to the GDM log-in screen using Ctrl+Alt+F7 and log-in. [Bug 134836] print of .eps graphics fails with absolute path reference
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: dvi2ps This bug was filed under "Kile," but I'm resubmitting it under dvi2ps because I think the problem resides in some kind of dvi-ps conversion package. The problem has to do with .eps graphics in a .dvi file produced from LaTeX . The graphics shows up in the .dvi file, but it is not successfully printed when it is referenced by an absolute path address in the original LaTeX file. The problem occurs in Kubuntu 7.04. The problem does NOT occur in Kubuntu 6.06 when printing the same file to the same printer, and using the same driver. Here is a sample LaTeX file that illustrates the problem,. \documentclass[letterpaper, 11pt]{article} \usepackage{graphicx} \begin{document} Suppose a file called ``VectorField.eps'' resides in the directory /foo/bar, and that the following LaTeX file also resides in that directory. In each of the following cases the graphics rendering of the file ``VectorField.eps'' appears in the .dvi file. Sorry for the late response, I've been out of town for the past week. Yes, I'm still getting this bug. I tried changing the themes, and it appears on all of them. I got the same three lines today when my computer was idle. I had never seen that before. This Thinkpad T60 has had ubuntu installed on it since day 1, first with 6.10, now 7.04. I always ran XGL (I have an ATI card, bleh) and beryl or compiz. The only thing that changed lately is that I have had an sshfs folder for the past couple of days. [Bug 134831] new hostname not reflected in /etc/hosts
Public bug reported: Well Im not sure if this is a bug, hopefully someone with stronger gnu- fu can chime in :) I changed the hostname in the manual network configuration, which seemed to work fine. Was told to log in again, and everything worked as usual. However it broke a wine application, which after much back and forth I traced to a gethostbyname() failing. Checking /etc/hosts it had the old hostname listed, while manual network configuration showed the new.
