[Bug 126444] Re: [gutsy-tribe2] on tty0 fails to shut down ltsp thin clients

2007-08-25 Thread Scott Balneaves
This popped up the other day, and we talked about it quickly in #ubuntu-
devel.

The problem is due to the fact that the /etc/event.d/ctl-alt-delete file does a
full shutdown, which
does things like unmount nbd mounts before it's finished shutting down. Two
solutions exist:

1) Changing the shutdown -r call to a /sbin/reboot command, which was decided
was ickygross, and
   against debian policy since it's a conffile, or
2) clean out all the shutdown scripts in /etc/rc*.d using update-rc.d tools.

ogra said he'd have a looksee. I think that should address the issue.

Cheers,
Scott

[Bug 134713] Re: Strange sound when booting Kubuntu 7.04

2007-08-25 Thread Ivan Pupák
Here is some additional information. In the last couple of hours I have
learned a little bit about systems logs. The missing codec information
mentioned above is exactly the following (from the kern.log file) :

hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC883, trying auto-probe from BIOS...

But this probably will not be it since the same message appears in all
logs since I installed Kubuntu, which was 15 Aug 2007 (it means that
this message was there even when the sound was NOT there.) Should
kern.log files be needed for further analysis I can provide them on
request.

BR,

Ivan

[Bug 134846] akregator disables all video on Dell GX110

2007-08-25 Thread rashelleym
Public bug reported:

On my Dell GX110 Small Form Factor machine on 6.10 Dapper Drake, opening
a akregator feed in a tab in the internal browser that causes a notice
about "popup block options" has caused the same problem three times
(including once after the latest kdelib upgrade).

The problem is complete loss of onboard video, including consoles. (The
monitor has vertical bars, and then loses synch.) I can log in blindly
and sudo shutdown -r, though.

This seemed like an akregator issue, or possibly a quirk of the onboard
video. But I've had no other obvious problems with video, and I spotted
a word in syslog that seemed similar to something I saw in the
description of kdelib changes, something about "slaveio."

Here's the segment of syslog that seems relevant:

Aug 25 21:46:32 localhost -- MARK --
Aug 25 22:00:57 localhost gdm[4245]: Error reinitilizing server
Aug 25 22:01:02 localhost gdm[6109]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error

XKeepsCrashing scr
ipt
Aug 25 22:01:18 localhost pppd[5045]: Modem hangup

Ideally, I think I'd like to adjust X files or something to be able to
access whatever debug information akregator offers when this happens.
Failing that, and assuming that X in theory might like to be configured
out of the box to account for as many contingencies as possible, this is
being submitted.

[Bug 134840] Re: Ubuntu should open yelp at first boot after install

2007-08-25 Thread David Ross
Those people are the individuals who everyone constantly tells, "RTFM".
Those are the people who fail to read the main Ubuntu site and only
search for "download". I did say "most people", the people who do need
yelp is a very small percentage.

There are plenty of web sites made in Flash only(game sites, etc), why
aren't those sites have a site for disabled users under the ADA rules?
Those users are a very low percentage and not even worth the time.

[Bug 134701] Re: [GUTSY] firefox crashed

2007-08-25 Thread Yannick
Wouhouuu, I did it :) It took me some time to figure out what I had to do, but
I figured it out ;)
OK, here is the log you asked...I might have done it wrong, but now I
understood it, i can do it again :)

Also, ususally, firefox crash, but today, when trying to reproduce it, through
the "run" command with dbg, it froze, but didn't quit on itself. I had to close
it, then Confirm it, even though a window appear asking if I really wanted to
kill Firefox that was frozen.
==>In one word: the log might be wrong, because the effect of the bug were not
the same as usual ;)
But I could try to reproduce it the way it does outside the "run" command.

Thanks!

I completely agree with Sarah Hobbs, nobody would use such a feature.
I'm a programmer and a computer technician, users complain about startup
windows which are bothersome especially at program startup. Most people
also don't like stupid tooltip boxes to appear on any program, those are
completely useless as well. People just want to use the computer, not go
through every on screen guided tour. Many of the older computer users
want a book over a help program on the computer.

Cyrille, you should help with an Ubuntu book and not waste people's time
with such a knowledgeable request.

[Bug 134841] HP DeskJet F4140 All-in-One has wrong permissions on the USB scanner device

2007-08-25 Thread Rouslan Solomakhin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libsane

HP DeskJet F4140 is a new All-in-One (print, scan, copy) that is not in
sane's database yet. Sane works fine for root, but users in group
'scanner' cannot access the All-in-One scanner functionality. To fix
this, the following line needs to be added to
/etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules:

SYSFS{idVendor}=="03f0", SYSFS{idProduct}=="7e04", MODE="664",
GROUP="scanner"

[Bug 134797] Re: ttf-dejavu-core should include Oblique

2007-08-25 Thread Arne Goetje
The main reason to split up the package into -core and -extra is to save space
on the Live CD. As the italic ones are not really needed on the Live CD, those
have been put into -extra.
As the experimental ones will presumably change in the future to become stable
ones, a separate -experimental package does not make sense to me.
Therefor, the -core packages of the fonts only contain the absolute minimum
needed to display characters in decent quality on the Live CD desktop. And the
essential ones are normal and bold styles (bold for headings, normal for
anything else).
On a production system, it is recommended to install the -extra packages also
to have full font support.

[Bug 134840] Re: Ubuntu should open yelp at first boot after install

2007-08-25 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I agree, according to my experience, most of people will quit Ubuntu or
think it's too complicate if they can't get information on how to use it
(specially around how to install programs, shutdown/restart the system,
and other basic tasks). Providing a little help to new people at the
first boot could be very important to make Ubuntu more usable for
anyone!

[Bug 134840] Ubuntu should open yelp at first boot after install

2007-08-25 Thread Cyrille Grosdemange
Public bug reported:

The problem :
I think many people had never read the content of the Help provided by the
system with "yelp".
This help contents a lot of useful information for a new user (like "how to
install new software" etc), and I'm sure the ones who need those informations
don't know it exists and search the web, forums, wikis, or IRC to find what
they want.

The solution :
I suggest that after the installation (at the first boot), Ubuntu open yelp
(the system help), so the new user is not lost with a new system that he
doesn't how to use it ... and can learn the basics of Ubuntu (how the desktop
is organized, how to install a news software, etc).

We can compare this with the guided start tour opened in Windows XP
after the installation ... to introduce the user with the system.

I think this new feature can do a lot in the integration of new users
because they won't be lost with their new system and they wil see that
everything is SIMPLE in Ubuntu :)

[Bug 134791] Re: wrong screen size for VG2230wm

2007-08-25 Thread andrewpmk
I have the same problem on the Gutsy Tribe 5 Live CD. I have an Acer
AL1916W 1440x900 widescreen monitor, and the 1440x900 resolution is not
listed. In fact, only 4x3/5x4 resolutions seem to be in this list. I
have an ATI Radeon X1600 video card.

Ubuntu should be able to autodetect my monitor, since dccprobe gives
useful information. It still can't.

[Bug 69151] Re: Edgy: dvdauthor: segfault

2007-08-25 Thread redpirate
I was having the same problem of segmentation fault everytime I tried to
use dvdauthor. However I found that the problem is actually due to
incorrect invoke of dvdauthor. Joey I think you are also facing the
problem due to incorrect command line:

You are running 'dvdauthor -o dvd/ magician-dvdauthor.xml'

Correct command should be 'dvdauthor -o dvd/ -x magician-dvdauthor.xml'

You have not specified the -x option when using the xml file

I think this should solve the problem since it solved my segmentation
error problem.

[Bug 129029] Re: [Gutsy Tribe-5] No Sound on Login Screen or during Login

2007-08-25 Thread TJ
I've used the temporary work-around of removing the Gutsy gnome-session
2.19.90 and installing the Feisty 2.18.0 version.

In my previous comment I mistyped the version - it should of course have
been 2.18.0, not 2.1.18!

1. Download the Feisty gnome-session v2.18.0 package
2. Uninstall the Gutsy gnome-session v2.19.90 package
3. Install gnome-session v2.18.0
4. Edit the apt preferences file to pin gnome-session so it won't be
accidentally updated

At the GDM log-in prompt *before* logging in, switch to a virtual
terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, and log-in the do the following:

$ wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gnome-session/gnome-session_2.18.0-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
$ sudo apt-get remove gnome-session
$ sudo dpkg -i gnome-session_2.18.0-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
$ sudo nano /etc/apt/preferences

Add the following 2 lines then save the file and exit with Ctrl+X:

  Package: gnome-session
  Pin: version 2.18.*

Put ubuntu-desktop back:

$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Now switch back to the GDM log-in screen using Ctrl+Alt+F7 and log-in.
You should hear the login sound.

[Bug 134836] print of .eps graphics fails with absolute path reference

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dvi2ps

This bug was filed under "Kile," but I'm resubmitting it under dvi2ps
because I think the problem resides in some kind of dvi-ps conversion
package.

The problem has to do with .eps graphics in a .dvi file produced from
LaTeX . The graphics shows up in the .dvi file, but it is not
successfully printed when it is referenced by an absolute path address
in the original LaTeX file. The problem occurs in Kubuntu 7.04. The
problem does NOT occur in Kubuntu 6.06 when printing the same file to
the same printer, and using the same driver.

Here is a sample LaTeX file that illustrates the problem,.

\documentclass[letterpaper, 11pt]{article}

\usepackage{graphicx}

\begin{document}

Suppose a file called ``VectorField.eps'' resides in the directory /foo/bar,
and that the following LaTeX file also
resides in that directory. In each of the following cases the graphics
rendering of the file ``VectorField.eps'' appears
in the .dvi file.

In the first case the graphics appears as it should when the .dvi file is
printed. \ldots
\begin{center}
 \includegraphics[width=2in]{VectorField.eps}
\end{center}

In the second case, a blank area appears where the graphics is supposed to be
when the .dvi file is printed. \ldots
\begin{center}
 \includegraphics[width=2in]{/foo/bar/VectorField.eps}
\end{center}

% The problem seems to be with the absolute path reference.
% The problem does not occur when a relative path is given (say, to a file in a
subdirectory of /foo/bar).

\end{document}

[Bug 88746] Re: USB devices are not recognized when having ehci_hcd modprobed

2007-08-25 Thread DarkDespair5
I have the same problem. My problem affects large external hard drives
(Western Digital 200GB, Maxtor OneTouch III TB). Small devices like
flash drives work for me most of the time. Unloading ehci_hcd always
works for me. Note: Sometimes my external HDs will load. Sometimes they
don't. My other USB devices have never had problems. It's interesting
that devices affected don't draw power. (My IPod connected to a Windows
computer to which I forcefully mangled the drivers to diagnose something
still charged)

[Bug 129029] Re: [Gutsy Tribe-5] No Sound on Login Screen or during Login

2007-08-25 Thread TJ
I'm hoping the desktop team will give this a high priority, because
although it is only an aural cosmetic touch, I think the Ubuntu brand
recognition is very much tied to the distinctive login sounds.

Unless The Gnome developers upstream deal with it quickly, there are 2
options:

1) revert to gnome-session 2.1.18
2) undo the changes to gsm-sound.c

[Bug 129029] Re: [Gutsy Tribe-5] No Sound on Login Screen or during Login

This issue is caused by wholesale changes to gnome-session between
Feisty (gnome-session-2.18) and Gutsy (gnome-session-2.19.90) in gnome-
session/gsm-sound.c

It appears to be a side-effect of the removal of the dependency on

[Bug 129029] Re: [Gutsy Tribe-5] No Sound on Login Screen or during Login

2007-08-25 Thread TJ
The system-wide sound settings *should* be read from
/etc/sound/events/gnome-2.soundlist, but Gutsy Tribe-5 isn't accessing
that file.

With an inotify watch on the file in a virtual terminal prior to log-in:

$ inotifywait -m /etc/sound/events/gnome-2.soundlist

no access to the file is reported. In Feisty the file is opened and
accessed and, of course, the sounds play.

[Bug 68020] Re: Azureus crashes just after startup (attempt to show sliding notification window)

2007-08-25 Thread Mike Fedyk
I can reproduce on gutsy.

Installing azureus_2.5.0.0repack1-0ubuntu1.1~proposed1 fixes this
problem on gutsy also. I have tested the proposed package continuously
for the last two months and the crash has not recurred (and azureus has
been shut down unsafely *many* times).

Let's get this proposed package in gutsy and feisty. Maybe gutsy first
since that's still in development and I'm using that now for my laptop.

[Bug 134826] Re: Gnash failes to install in Firefox

2007-08-25 Thread DavidBaucum
This also happens if I try to grab the Adobe flash player in stead of Gnash, so
it's clearly not Gnash specific.
I also forgot to mention that this is on a vanilla install of Gutsy Tribe 5.

[Bug 134831] new hostname not reflected in /etc/hosts

2007-08-25 Thread Jeek Elemental
Public bug reported:

Well Im not sure if this is a bug, hopefully someone with stronger gnu-
fu can chime in :)

I changed the hostname in the manual network configuration, which seemed to
work fine.
Was told to log in again, and everything worked as usual.

However it broke a wine application, which after much back and forth I traced
to a gethostbyname() failing.
Checking /etc/hosts it had the old hostname listed, while manual network
configuration showed the new.

I assume /etc/hosts should update as you change hostname, if not maybe a
warning is in order as it is not easy to track down a mismatch?

This was on fully updated 32bit feisty, amd64x2
