[Bug 178063] GDebiKDE in Kubuntu slows system to a crawl, eats memory

2007-12-22 Thread Kuovsk Anekask
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdebi-kde

Ever since I upgraded to Kubuntu 7.10, GDebiKDE has slowed the system to
a crawl every time I've had to use it.

Look at: https://440.us.to/screenies/screenie1.png (yes, there are
security warnings but there is no risk, it's my home server)

The spike in all four graphs is when I used GDebiKDE to install a
package (new version of Opera). It hogged all of my memory and over 600
megs of swap. The system slowed to a crawl to the point that my audio
dropped out and the mouse was unresponsive.

I don't know if this is my system in particular or if it is a bug. I'm
surprised I can't find any other bug reports for this.

System info: Kubuntu 7.10 (with kernel 2.6.22-14-rt for audio purposes)
running on an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (1.8 GHz) with 512 MB of RAM. The
system is fast and responsive most of the time. It could be something to
do with my real time kernel.

[Bug 122636] Re: Gshutdown closes gnome session but does not shutdown down

2007-12-22 Thread Emmet Hikory
This will not be fixed in gutsy (or feisty), as it does not meet the
criteria for a Stable Release Update. Specifically, it is not a
security vulnerability, not a regression (feisty didn't work), will not
cause loss of user data, the package doesn't fail to build from source,
the package can be installed, and the program doesn't segfault on
startup. If you disagree with this conclusion, please review
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates and follow the process
described therein to apply for inclusion in prior releases.

gshutdown 0.2 was added to the Ubuntu repository in preparation for
Ubuntu 8.04 on 12th November, 2007, and will be included in future
releases of Ubuntu, closing this bug.

Note that it is inappropriate to mark a bug Fix Released prior to the
upload of a fixed version to the Ubuntu repositories. It is likely that
the solution to this bug could have been included in Ubuntu 7.10 if this
bug had not been mistakenly marked as solved.

[Bug 178065] my udev rules do not work at all

2007-12-22 Thread SMut
Public bug reported:

Something is strange in Ubuntu - I am using actually Gutsy.

What should work is this in /etc/udev/rules.d/13-DBbackup.rules:

KERNEL==sd?1,SUBSYSTEM==block,ATTR{size}==16121824,NAME=usbDBbackup,SYMLINK=usbDBbackup,RUN+=/usr/local/bin/usbBackup

Goal is to use this udev.rule to give an usbstick a special name, mountpoint
and run a script to backup a SQLiteDB automagic ;-)
So far, so bad:
First Ubuntu mounts the stick to /dev/stick - it just ignores my rules.

So I removed the automount at the Gnome-Desktop via
System/System-/Removable-Devices (or something similar, I run Ubuntu with a
German localization)
When I insert the stick now, the rule is still ignored, no name is given, no
symlink is set nor the script is run.

Actually SYSFS rules seem to be dead at all, so I used the things given by
udevinfo for the device after plugging, dmesg shows me:
[35317.105398] sd 24:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
okay, so I ask the ape:
udevinfo --attribute-walk --name=/dev/sdb1

 looking at device '/block/sdb/sdb1':
KERNEL==sdb1
SUBSYSTEM==block
DRIVER==
ATTR{stat}==  24  19200
ATTR{size}==16121824
ATTR{start}==32
ATTR{dev}==8:17

  looking at parent device '/block/sdb':
KERNELS==sdb
SUBSYSTEMS==block
DRIVERS==
ATTRS{capability}==13
ATTRS{stat}==  34   23  456  31200
000  308  312
ATTRS{size}==16121856
ATTRS{removable}==1
ATTRS{range}==16
ATTRS{dev}==8:16

Great, Where does the SYSFS has gone to? Nevermind, the device and it's parent
should be sufficent to create matching rules.
What's wrong with my rule?
Any help highly appreciated, I'm absolutely stuck, sitting 18 hours in front of
my computer trying...

[Bug 178064] Documentation Error: IP Masquerading

2007-12-22 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

This is in regards to the documentation located at:

https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/server/C/ip-masquerading.html

There is apparently a bug in 7.10 in which you need an additional few
steps to enable IP Masquerading.

In addition to modifying the iptables, you also need to edit the
/etc/sysctl.conf file and add the following lines :

net.ipv4.conf.default.forwarding=1
net.ipv4.conf.all.forwarding=1

[Bug 155759] Re: Thunderbird does not move junk messages into junk folder

2007-12-22 Thread Roelof Schuiling
Had the same problem. It was somewhat 'solved' by setting the junk
filtering options that are under 'Account settings'. When I set these
too, instead of just the global settings, the junk messages were
correctly moved to the junk folder, behaviour as expected. I feel this
is more of a workaround than correct behaviour of Thunderbird, but
still.

[Bug 162757] Re: Screen blanks permanently on Toshiba Satellite 1800 during 7.10 Live CD bootup or full installation

2007-12-22 Thread Richard
Hi Leann

There is no improvement. I've downloaded the PC (Intel x86) alternate
install CD (as I have only 256MB RAM) and installed Hardy Heron Alpha2
onto my Toshiba Laptop so that it has the dual boot options of that or
7.04. The new kernel is shown as 2.6.24-2 in the boot options list.
However the symptoms are still the same - when the colour loading bar
fills up then the screen goes blank forever. When I use cont-alt-del the
display returns as the coloured segments finish returning to dark. When
I start 7.04 (kernel 2.6.20-16) after re-booting the computer works
fine.

[Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen

2007-12-22 Thread NikTheGeek
I have a similar problem, but a different outcome. The first time I
press the Switch User, Logout, Shutdown etc icon, my PC freezes for a
good 2 or 3 minutes - long enough to make me walk away from the machine
and come back later. But then the window has opened to give me the
options. I lock screen. Come back later and carry on working. Subsequent
presses of the Switch User, Logout, Shutdown etc icon seem ok.

Ubuntu 7.10 - Nvidia GeForce 6600GT using Nvidia Graphics - note: I had
the same problem on the supplied graphics driver and I have tried both
64bit and 32bit distros. The pc is an AMD 64bit 3.8GHz Athlon.

Thoughts? Or is my issue covered elsewhere? if it is, apologies, but
this was the closest I could find...

Nick

[Bug 178074] Notification refresh or ignore when SVG file changes on disk

2007-12-22 Thread Pander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: inkscape

Inkscape should notify user when SVG file on disk has been changed. It
should present a focal dialogue asking the user to ignore this event or
the refresh the SVG file. Similar functionality can be found in
applications like gedit. Optionally SVG could have a setting in
Preferences that will enable the before described functionality, this
setting should be set to true by default.

This bug is in 0.45.1-1ubuntu

Fixing this bug will enable users to refresh SVG files very quickly in
stead of manually closing and opening a particular file.

2007-12-22 Thread Baptiste Mille-Mathias

I successfully authenticated in GDM, and I was ablre to see the default

this problem was on all users of my computer.
After looking at .xsession-errors; I discovered today the script

when I move out of this folder my session worked.

Too bad that GDM cleaned up .xsession-errors; I cannot give you the

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

[Bug 48773] Re: Mouse doesn't get turned off on system shutdown

2007-12-22 Thread Federico Belvisi
I finally managed to compile and upload to my ppa a kernel with the
patch submitted by Sebastian, you can find it here:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/armalite/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/armalite/ubuntu gutsy main

I have a little problem in versioning since synaptic shows me after upgrade
that the kernel is still upgradeable with the same version. This should not
happen if you download and install manually the .deb, or if you compile from
sources.
I'll try my best to keep my ppa in sync with the standard kernel for future
versions.
Works out of the box for me with the linux-restricted provided by ubuntu so i
didn't have to tweak with nvidia closed drivers. You will/can find other
packages apart from kernel on this repository, so pay attention if you want to
upgrade only the kernel.
No warranty whatsoever :)

[Bug 161044] Re: no CD automount after upgrade to gutsy (Hal, dbus or gvm)

2007-12-22 Thread viking777
I have come up with a workround for this problem which is successful for
me. I replaced the default hal 0.5.9-1ubuntu6 which is in the gutsy
repos with hal 0.5.10-5ubuntu1 from the hardy repos. Optical media
recognition now behaves as it should.

One word of warning if you are tempted to try this. In addition to
installing hal, synaptic or apt-get will also install and replace
several other programs for compatibility. I have not noticed any ill
effects from this although this may not be the same on all machines.
Make sure you have a disk image or comprehensive backup before you try
this in case it does not work for you.

[Bug 113440] Re: Xfce-4 battery monitor using too much cpu

2007-12-22 Thread Eero Tamminen
 I had been monitoring cpu usage and every 1 sec, my cpu usage % would
spike to 70-80%, I ran a top and located the spike Xfce-4 battery
-p. The battery monitor is just really sucking alot of cpu usage for
such a small app.

CPU usage can disturb other applications, but when it comes to what kind
of behavior drains battery most (once kernel uses dynticks and can make
HW to sleep when it's not used), it's how often something wakes and how
long.

For example SDL programs might look completely idle when they are not
doing anything (use 0% CPU according to top), but in reality they are
are polling the system (very quickly) several times a second.

In this case I think the main problem is that the thing wakes up once a
sec. Battery state doesn't change that fast and plugging in a charger
could/should send an event about it...

[Bug 30995] Re: dm_mod causes false busy on mount attempts

2007-12-22 Thread wna
Some days ago I had a similar problem after an update:

Machine has two SATA drives.
I had /boot and swap on primary partitions /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2,
/ and other filesystems on Software-RAID-1 and LVM.

After the issue neither /boot nor swap was recognized on /dev/sda*.
Instead it was mapped to /dev/evms/sda*. The RAID and LVM devices on
/dev/md* and /dev/mapper/* worked fine though.

$ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /boot
mount: /dev/sda1 already mounted or /boot busy
$ sudo mount /dev/evms/sda1 /boot
$ sudo swapon /dev/sda2
swapon: /dev/sda2: Invalid argument
$ sudo swapon /dev/evms/sda2
$

This cost me quite some time to figure out ;-(

Is this intended, i.e. should I change my fstab to point to /dev/evms/*
?

[Bug 157642] Re: gimp 2.4 *final* in gutsy

2007-12-22 Thread Gert Kulyk
It is released in gutsy-proposed. It took some time because of a broken
source-package, a recent upload fixed this. To get it, you'll have to
enable gutsy-proposed repository in your sources.list.

[Bug 178087] application blockes

2007-12-22 Thread webscriptz
Public bug reported:

Application block for no reason at all.

Alle applications block from time to time and it's quiet frequently that
this happens, I do think it's a bug in the gnome code because if firefox
blocks everything blocks including everything outside firefox and o
Gnome too.

I've reinstalled the OS and even then it happens, and I didn't even install
anything outside the base installation.
Still I do have restriced drive management where I've activated Nvidia gforce
driver.

uname -a
Linux webscriptz-acer 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Dec 18 08:02:57 UTC 2007
i686 GNU/Linux

glxgears -info
GL_RENDERER   = GeForce Go 7300/PCI/SSE2
GL_VERSION= 2.1.1 NVIDIA 100.14.19
