[Bug 186286] [NEW] nautilus crashes when visualizing a particular icon owned by root on Hardy

2008-01-26 Thread Icarosaurus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

After the installation of Google Earth, with root privileges, an icon owned by
root was put on my desktop.
Everytime Nautilus visualizes that icon it flashes 5 or 6 times then crashes.
Since the icon is put on desktop, Nautilus crashes at Gnome startup.
Changing the owner of the icon file to myself avoids crashes.
I tried to change permissions on other icons on the Desktop, but nothing
happens. The strange thing is that it happens only with this icon.

The icon's file name is "Google-googleearth.desktop" but it appears as "Google
Earth" on Nautilus.
This is the content of the icon file:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Google Earth
GenericName=3D planet viewer
Comment=Explore, search and discover the planet
Exec=/opt/google-earth//googleearth %f
Terminal=false
MultipleArgs=false
Type=Application
Icon=/opt/google-earth//googleearth-icon.png
Categories=Application;Network
MimeType=application/vnd.google-earth.kml+xml;application/vnd.google-earth.kmz;application/earthviewer;application/keyhole;
GenericName[it_IT]=3D planet viewer

[Bug 163392] Re: ACPI: Error installing bay notify handler - Thinkpad T42p

2008-01-26 Thread Dima Ryazanov
Same with Thinkpad T20:

[   83.219347] thinkpad_acpi: ThinkPad ACPI Extras v0.17
[   83.219362] thinkpad_acpi: http://ibm-acpi.sf.net/

[ 83.328242] thinkpad_acpi: another device driver is already handling bay
events
[   83.328260] thinkpad_acpi: disabling subdriver bay

It started happening in Gutsy with 2.6.22, and is still a problem in

[Bug 182778] Re: Wrong resolution on Hardy Alpha 3

2008-01-26 Thread jarondl
Same here.. Reinstalled hardy, and the maximum resolution is set to 600x800..
like mikko sorri, I've tried dpkg-reconfigure, but it doesn't ask anything
about screens any more... This is probably due to
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/hardy-hardware-detection
but that doesn't help, because no workaround is suggested there

[Bug 110585] Re: Compaq Proliant DL360: raid controller should use cpqarray, not sym53c8xx

2008-01-26 Thread MarkC
Hi there,

This may benefit others who have also had problems installing Ubuntu Server
7.10.
I have just managed to install Ubuntu Server 7.10 on my Compaq DL360 G1 by
followed Alex Smith's recommendation above using the module blacklist technique.

- Boot from the Ubuntu Server 7.10 CD
- At the boot menu hit F6 for "Other Options"
- When presented with the boot options command line, append Alex's suggested
blacklist command
sym53c8xx.blacklist=true
- Hit enter to boot.

I received an eror to say that the boot option was unrecognised however
I was able to see my 2 x 36GB SCSI disks (Raid 1) and partition
accordingly. Without the blacklist I was unable to see the SCSI disks in
the partitioner.

Regards
Mark

[Bug 180551] Re: Postfix myhostname defaults to uname() not gethostname().

2008-01-26 Thread LaMont Jones
[somewhat edited for brevity...]
const char *get_hostname(void)
{
/*
 * The gethostname() call is not (or not yet) in ANSI or POSIX, but it is
 * part of the socket interface library. We avoid the more politically-
 * correct uname() routine because that has no portable way of dealing
 * with long (FQDN) hostnames.
 */
if (my_host_name == 0) {
if (gethostname(namebuf, sizeof(namebuf)) < 0)
msg_fatal("gethostname: %m");

postfix doesn't call uname. Sounds like glibc is doing something
"helpful".

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  kdebase-runtime-bin: Depends: kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 (=

   Depends: kdebase-runtime-data (=

Looks like some packages have been updated to the 4:4.0.0 version, and some are

[Bug 174975] Re: firefox flash player skips

2008-01-26 Thread cubexombi
I'm not so sure.. but I believe I've got the same issue. Google brings
up tons of stuff on other sound issues, but none like this. even if I
pause the video until it completes downloading it will still "skip"
every few minutes during playback. it's not only youtube, but almost any
streaming flv.

I do belive this is hardware related however as I've used remastersys to
build a live CD of my system, booted it on same hardware gave the same
problem, booted it on another workstation and it worked great.

for what it's worth I've got ali 5451 onboard sound, on an HP Pavillion
ze4229 laptop. I'll be trying this out soon hopefully with a pcmcia
soundblaster livem (so long as i can still get my hands on one)

This occured to me, too, when I used do-release-upgrade to upgrade from

I was doing this on an EC2 instance, and when /etc/init.d/networking
created no error messages on the console whatsoever, it was very
difficult to debug.

[Bug 86666] Re: Feisty crashes after grub, before boot process, if usplash is enabled (amd64)

2008-01-26 Thread slaguth
Thomas Frederiksen's fix (vesafb module) worked for me. I am on Ubuntu
Gutsy AMD64 with an NVIDIA 8800 GTS card (using the proprietary driver).
I was finally able to see the bootsplash for the first time since using
the install cd six months ago!

Previously when I tried to start up the monitor would go blank and
report not getting input. I believe the computer just crashed because it
wouldn't start up, even if left for interminable periods of time. I
tried the vga=xxx settings, and I was able to get some output, but it
was mostly just black and white noise on the screen. (Under 24bit color
I was able to get red noise before the screen when blank, but I don't
think that means anything.) I was forced to simply remove "splash" from
the parameters in menu.lst in order to make my system boot. However,
allowing vesafb seems to have fixed the problem. My system now boots
normally with usplash enabled.

Thanks!

[Bug 48773] Re: Mouse doesn't get turned off on system shutdown

2008-01-26 Thread FilmAficionado
I hope this hasn't been said before:

I found this really interesting. So neither my mouse nor my keyboard
lights turn off when I "shut down the computer..."

BUT they both turn off (correctly; as they should) when I place my
computer on "standby..."

Interesting, or not worth mentioning? This is on a Gutsy install.

[Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards

2008-01-26 Thread cornelius
Never mind. I had two random within-an-hour freezes today with the latest
Compiz running. In one freeze I could move the pointer, in the other I
couldn't. ssh'ing in from another machine, both times CPU was at ~0% and
backtraces (gotten by attaching gdb to compiz) looked like it didn't happen in
Compiz.
That one time earlier this week, same version of compiz ran for almost 2 days
without any crashes. I guess I was just lucky.

[Bug 186274] [NEW] set uuid for swap-partition, mkswap-uuid patch by drbl (clonezilla) project

2008-01-26 Thread coastgnu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: util-linux

See also:
- Debian bug-tracker [1]
- mkswap-uuid patched mkswap by the National Venter for High-performance
Computing (NCHC) Taiwan [2]

Description_
 mkswap can't create a predefined uuid for a new swap partition.
 But mkswap-uuid offered by the drbl project (clonezilla) [2] does!

 I've been told the patch is quite simplistic so it weould be good to
have it in hardy before eature freeze.

Solution:
 patch mkswap as NCHC-TW did.

Affects also:
 This would also be a help for other bugs regarding swap-parition uuids in
ubuntu.
 #9052626 Routine fsck deactivates swap, changing UUID
 #66637 After running mkswap, swap space is discarded, system fails to
hibernate (invalid swap signature)

[Bug 181057] Re: "Del"-key doesn't work on Acer extensa 5220

2008-01-26 Thread zombiepig
For comparison sake, when I run xev on 7.10 (delete key works fine), the
output is:

KeyPress event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x341,
root 0x67, subw 0x0, time 3103246438, (169,-8), root:(173,41),
state 0x0, keycode 107 (keysym 0x, Delete), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (7f) ""
XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (7f) ""
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x341,
root 0x67, subw 0x0, time 3103246553, (169,-8), root:(173,41),
state 0x0, keycode 107 (keysym 0x, Delete), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (7f) ""
XFilterEvent returns: False

So it looks like the keycode has changed from 107 in gutsy, to 242 in
hardy, and no longer registers correctly as delete.

[Bug 186264] [NEW] keyboard randomly goes dead; takes a logout to restore functionality.

2008-01-26 Thread Matt `da Wolf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

I've had this bug in debian. Apparently it followed over me to Ubuntu
and was not fixed. So I'll be typing away on my USB keyboard. Then it
just dies. All input fails. No toggle keys, nothing. Mouse still works.
I can logout, keyboard functionality will restore at the password
prompt.

I get this in dmesg:
[  332.124841] hald[5640]: segfault at 2b8c7b7ea000 rip 0040e8e0
rsp 7fff2f364900 error 4

Far more information than debian ever spat out to me. I can not tell
anyone how to reproduce this. With debian, it would just happen. I
thought it didn't exist until it occured last night. No real logic
behind its timing.

Seems that Bespin does not link against libXrender.so, but it should. I've
attached a patch to add libXrender.so to the list of libraries to link against
and tested that it fixes your FTBFS.
I've also reported this bug upstream.

[Bug 185917] Re: lucene2 jdk dependence

2008-01-26 Thread jablko
Thanks Onkar, for working on lucene2 in Ubuntu.

I'm interested in building lucene2 with GCJ - you mention:

The lucene2 core (and contrib) libraries build with GCJ also. I have
already tried this by disabling unit tests. The solution to unit test
failure is known but depends on another bug #183164.

However I'm getting the following unit test failures:

[junit] Testsuite: org.apache.lucene.search.TestSort

[Bug 186260] [NEW] constraint error: Message: nodes.adb:111 index check failed

2008-01-26 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ghdl

Hi,
  This is on Gutsy on amd64; on ghdl package 0.25+gcc4.1.1-1build1 and I've

[Bug 186257] [NEW] [Gutsy] Xorg initialises with wrong refresh rate

2008-01-26 Thread Nervous
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Xorg expected to start at 1024x768 85 Hz, and Xorg.log reports what this
refresh rate choosed,
but actually I have 1024x768 60 Hz (in monitor OSD and noticeable at once
because of CRT).

I cannot fix refresh rate immediately with xrandr --rate 85, this have
no effect. For success I have to switch to another rate and then to 85
Hz.

And after any change of videomode (e.g. launching fullscreen app with
resolution another than desktop
resolution, switching to vt) refresh rate resets to 60 Hz but still reported by
utilities as 85 Hz

Updating xorg from standard repositories has no effect

P.S. Problem do not appear in 6.06 Dapper Drake (and Windows XP too)

Radeon 8500 LE (R200 chip), 15" CRT Compal m557, driver radeon
Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, xorg 1:7.2-5ubuntu13, xserver-xorg-video-ati

[Bug 186256] [NEW] [Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy i386 desktop alpha-3+ daily-build] Guided entire disk installation fails when installing onto existing Ubuntu system that should be over-written.

2008-01-26 Thread Stanley Sokolow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Daily-builds 24 Jan 2008, 25 Jan 2008, and 26 Jan 2008 all fail
installation from Live CD when using the Guided Entire Disk option.
These installations were being made onto a hard drive that has an older
version of Ubuntu installed on the partition #1 ext3, and the only other
partition is the swap partition. During installation, the error
message comes up: "Failed to create a file system. The ext3 file
system creation in partition #1 of SCSI1(0,0,0)(sda) failed." When I
tried installation again (without rebooting the CD), the same error
occurred. Then I chose the manual partition method. I used the
existing partitions, assigned mount point / to the ext3 partition, asked
for formatting of that partition, and the system then installed.
(However, I then found another error that was a show-stopper. See bug
report #186246. )

[Bug 101943] Re: braid screensaver crashes system with compiz activated

2008-01-26 Thread Saïvann Carignan
This bug does not happen with all intel cards and it does not happen
with ATI cards that I tested so far, it seems to happen with all nvidia
cards. That's why drivers should be fixed, this is clear. However, I
also think that we should suspect the quality of the screensaver, I
don't have sufficient knowledge to comment beyond that point.

[Bug 181057] Re: "Del"-key doesn't work on Acer extensa 5220

2008-01-26 Thread zombiepig
I can confirm this behaviour also happens on my acer extensa 5620, using
ubuntu 8.04. Versions of ubuntu prior to 8.04 all worked fine.

Some more details -

The problem seems to be irrespective of desktop environment - if I
switch using ctrl-alt-f1 to a terminal screen, the delete key still
doesn't work. However, running 'xev', and pressing the delete key
results in:

KeyPress event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x301,
root 0x68, subw 0x0, time 7525668, (507,296), root:(511,345),
state 0x0, keycode 242 (keysym 0x1008ff4b, XF86LaunchB), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x301,
root 0x68, subw 0x0, time 7525668, (507,296), root:(511,345),
state 0x0, keycode 242 (keysym 0x1008ff4b, XF86LaunchB), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

So it seems like the key is registering somehow, but not behaving
correctly!

I also tried a "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", but no change in
behaviour.

[Bug 186254] [NEW] [Hardy] freeciv-sdl won't start - no usable default theme

2008-01-26 Thread Caroline Ford
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: freeciv-client-sdl

I've install freeciv and freeciv-sdl on a up-to-date Hardy. The game
didn't make a menu entry and doesn't run from the command line:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.loki/loki_update/tmp$ civ
2: Using Video Output: x11
0: Could not open font: /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSans.ttf

/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSans.ttf

The font does exist as you can see and has normal perms.

[Bug 186252] [NEW] Suggestion, Multiple side bars in Nautilus

2008-01-26 Thread Sam Bull
Public bug reported:

It would be nice to be capable of having multiple side bars underneath
each other. Such as having the 'Places' menu, then underneath having the
'Notes' menu. I would be interested in using the 'Notes' bar, but not at
the expense of having to keep switching between that and the 'Places'
menu, so being able to have them both on together would be great.

[Bug 186255] [NEW] displayconfig is blank when using radeonhd

2008-01-26 Thread will_in_wi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

I was using fglrx when an upgrade broke x. I rebooted into recovery mode
and reset the xorg config, then I rebooted and tried to change to
radeonhd, which I had just installed. Displayconfig-gtk came up blank. I
switched drivers manually using nano and displayconfig still is blank. I
am attaching my xorg.conf file and a screenshot of displayconfig-gtk.
