[Bug 255346] [NEW] kernel removal
Public bug reported: I am using ubuntu 8.10 with the latest updates. Today i decided to free some room on my hard drive and i came to realize that the old kernels where using more than one GB of my hard drive. I do not think it is reasonable to automatically keep more than 3 old kernels especially on low configuration with a small hard drive. But the actual bug is: during the removal process, for a given version of the kernel, synaptic will remove the kernel module at first and then update the kernel boot image which will be removed a few seconds later. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in linux. For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. Re: [Bug 179675] Re: Ubuntu LiveCD doesn't start with a VIA Chrome9 HC graphic card and, when Ubuntu is installed, it works only with VESA drivers
Now Ubuntu 8.04.1 LiveCD can load but it uses a too high resolution (1440xsomething, I cannot check now sorry). When I installed it, I can use it with opnchrome or vesa drivers, but there are some problems: ---VESA--- - It takes a long while to load - I can't change resolution when X is started: if I do it, all becomes unreadable. This happens also if I pass from X to a console (this changes resolution, 'cause consoles have a lower resolution) - no 3D acceleration, of course. ---OPENCHROME--- - When cursor changes (example: when I move the pointer from a gnome application to a wine one, that has a different cursor), it disappears, and it returns when the cursor returns the original (example: when I leave the wine window and return in gnome) - Another time, no 3D. I also tried stable and beta drivers from http://linux.via.com.tw/support/downloadFiles.action but I get only strange draws when X starts. [Bug 255255] Re: blkid library detects JFS partition as FAT32
Can you send me the first 64k of the device? i.e.: sudo dd if=/dev/sdb5 of=/tmp/jfs.img bs=64k count=1 And then upload /tmp/jfs.img I have no doubt that moving the JFS-related entry before the VFAT entry will solve the problem, but the probe_fat_nomagic() does a lot of tests before concluding that the filesystem is VFAT. This leads me to believe that /dev/sdb5 was previously formatted as VFAT, and the JFS mkfs didn't do enough to eradicate the traces of the old VFAT partition. The problem is that there is a much weaker test for JFS, so this could lead to false positives in the other direction. (i.e., a JFS filesystem which is then formatted to be a VFAT partition.) So I'd like to get a copy of the beginning of the filesystem to see if there's a better fix. My guess is the other problem is that mkfs.jfs needs to do a better job wiping out the first few kilobytes of the image to prevent this kind of false positive. -- blkid library detects JFS partition as FAT32 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/255255 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I had to kill this script about 3 more times. The upgrade continued to the end where it detected that something was wrong then tried to revert/recover. This resulted install of some version of the locales package (again it stalled, so I had to kill it) then the update manager quit. I rebooted and everything started without any error messages. I logged in and it says I am running 8.04, package manager/update manager says everything is up to date. [Bug 253937] Re: Local login fails without LDAP server
Hi, the thing is, that I've already tried setting those timeouts. And there was no result at all. The lookup time didn't change. Wouldn't it be a lot more intelligent in libnss-ldap to do a *one-time* check if the LDAP server is reachable, and if not there's just no output. Just something simple like a ping. Only local files will be used. This is the behaviour I expected to happen -- no server, no data. Simple. Short. [Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection
I see the same problem on my desktop PC which also has an Asus motherboard with built-in wifi. The connection works fine when I am browsing the net or printing from another PC (the desktop is a print server) but as soon as I start streaming music from another device on the network the wireless crashes. I have tried to restrict the rate using iwconfig but that has no effect and I have also tried writing a script that tests for network connectivity and does a modprobe -r on failure - but that has mixed results, sometimes locking up completly and sometimes proving innefective - both cases requiring a re-boot to get back the network. The problem does seem to occur most when uploading data at a high data- rate, as streaming off the server over the internet doesn't crash it as much and I have seen streaming work fine when the network is in heavy use from other devices. -- rtl8187 drops connection https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/182473 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW] http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). [Bug 255362] [NEW] nautilus hangs always, now after a failed attempt to setup a VM in QEMULATOR
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Running Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron Tried to install WIN XP sp2 as a VM using QEMULATOR. During attempt to RUN that VM, terminal opened and stopped at FATAL etc. Terminal hung, wouldn't accept any input from keyboard, wouldn't close even using Force Quit, then KILL. Cold Restart. Launched Places, HOME FOLDER - Nautilus hung again. Desktop icons disappear during after screen flash when FORCE QUIT. Same with KILL from System Monitor. After either FORCE QUIT or KILL, then Nautilus window returns to the desktop. Still hung, and same as above, Cold started in ?repair? mode - it reported problems, but I couldn't scroll up the screen to see those details. Advice given at visible part of text: something about cannot repair etc . . . run apt-get update . . . packages automatically installed that are no longer needed, run 'apt- get autoremove' . . . then it listed about 10 program names. Then I tried to uninstall nautilus from the ADD/REMOVE utility: It did not list Nautilus - it did list some add-ons. I ADDED those and cold start, again. Same problem sequence with Nautilus. Nautilus does work in only one condition. I have a 'folder' on my desktop - when I open that folder all appears to be normal - Except when I click to any other listed directory ('Folder'), then the same hang sequence happens. Normal functions including open files, close files, exit Nautilus - BUT IF I CLICK ANY OF THE LISTED FOLDERS, then the same sequence of problem is mine to behold! I'd think I need to reinstall Nautilus? But am not sure how. The entire problem sequence looks so very much a like WINDOWS hang, and persistance instance, and desktop icons disappearing. Only way out is to cold restart, and do NOT use Places etc to browse my files. Very Sad for me - I need Windows ONLY to run my MAGICJACK Phones and CAD Programs AUtoCAD SolidWorks (QCAD sadly only saves files to .dxf). Have not UNinstalled QEMULATOR, Qemu Llauncher, or QtEmu - although I've used ONLY QEMULATOR. Only tried one install of WIN XP , and I did delete its .iso image and its VM from within QEMULATOR. There are no othe VM installed, etc. Any other file browser program available to install would be fine for me until this can be fixed. Thank You!
