2008-08-22 Thread norrisgrd
I could never get Hardy to work on my machine. I am happy with Gutsy
Studio and the OPen Office, Firefox 3, etc upgrades I've added. Maybe
8.10 will work and I'll upgrade then. Thanks.

[Bug 260542] [NEW] Keyboard not recognized by VirtualBox

2008-08-22 Thread tdflanders
Public bug reported:

I reported this to VirtualBox through TracTickets or something:

Hi, after working fine on Ubuntu Intrepid alfa 3 for days, suddenly a
keyboard is not recognized message appears. Possibly this is due to a
Ubuntu update? I will report this on Launchpad (to Ubuntu) also. I have
an Acer Aspire 9410-4933 with a USA qwerty keyboard.

It worked fine under Intrepid, so I assume an Ubuntu update must have
caused this. I didn't use Virtualbox for a while on startup I got an
error message about a USB device. Now I get nothing anymore. It just
closes down. Please look at logfile.

[Bug 249340] Re: Gutsy-Hardy upgrade hangs in localedef

2008-08-22 Thread StefanHuszics
Boot with -14 is not a good solution for me, because the installer
FORCED ME to delete -14 and leave only -15 since for some reason
installing Gutsy requires 62.5MiB free on boot (which I have as a
separate partition with only 80MiB).

Hopefully all my killall of all the locale related things did the trick
and I will be able to reboot my system...

But gosh, how did such a HUGE bug find it's way into 7.10 and stay open
for so long? There should at least be an error message blocking
proceeding when trying to update a -15 kernel 7.10 to 8.04 update.

And why does the new kernel stuff suddenly need 62,5MiB of free space on
boot? That is an insane increase (7.10 -15 kernel takes 15-20 MiB).

[Bug 260543] [NEW] JMicron SATA Controller. Problem booting with kernel 2.6.24-19. Boots fine with kernel 2.6.22-14

2008-08-22 Thread euthymos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic

Hard disk configuration:

JMICRON JMB363 SATA CONTROLLER:
1 HDD IDE Maxtor
1 HDD ESATA2 Hitachi Dekstar T7K250

The hard disk that prevents Ubuntu 8.04.1 (that ships with kernel 2.6.24-19)
from booting is the Hitachi on JMB363: if it is plugged, Ubuntu freezes on the
splash screen.
If I unplug it, Ubuntu boots fine.

I replaced the kernel with an older one (2.6.22-14) and it boots fine
even with the Hitachi Dekstar plugged onto the JMB363.

Newer kernel: doesn't boot.
Older kernel: boots fine.

[Bug 210006] Re: Select custom icon weired behavoir

2008-08-22 Thread Gaspard Leon
The same thing happens to me, so I thought I would finally report it..
looks like it's already been reported:

To reproduce:

1. Install Ubuntu 8.04.1 (GNOME I used i386 not sure if it matters)
2. Create launcher or folder on desktop or in a folder.
3. Change the items properties with the right click menu.
4. In the [item name] Properties dialog that opens, click the icon button to
change it.
5. In this GTK dialog Select Custom Icon, choose a NON-image item, such as a
folder, drive, or other non-image file.
6. The GTK dialog Select Custom Icon will get about 10 to 20 pixels wider
with each click.

Anyone else have this behaviour?

[Bug 210006] Re: Select custom icon weired behavoir

It seems that it's supposed to open a right-pane to show the image
preview for the icon, but if you select a non-image file or folder, it
opens the preview quickly then closes it so the dialog gets wider?

I'm not a developer, but this issue exists for sure.

[Bug 158292] Re: Bottom task bar moves up an inch when I connect to external video/projector

2008-08-22 Thread Dustin Lange
I have a Dell Latitude D620 and the same problem.

After booting, the Gnome Panel is displayed at the right position (at
the bottom of the screen). It doesn't matter which screen options were
chosen, i.e., whether an external screen is connected or not - after
booting, everything usually works.

Then, after pressing the video button (CRT/LCD), the system
automatically detects connected external screens and uses all available
screens (notebook + monitor/projector). At the bottom of the screen, the
Gnome Panel is displayed above an empty bar, which has the same size.

The bar won't disappear. Disconnecting the external screen and pressing
the video button again don't take effect.

[Bug 148466] Re: Won't boot on a DELL Poweredge 2500

2008-08-22 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Frank,

Thanks for testing Intrepid and the feedback. I'm going to tentatively
mark this Fix Released against Intrepid based on your remarks. So now
the question is how much interest do you have in trying to isolate the
patch(es) to see if they'll qualify for a Stable Release Update for
Hardy. You noted this was a decomissioned box so I'm not sure how much
interest/time you have to investigate. Let me know, it will involve
needing to perform a git-bisect and likely multiple kernel rebuilds.
Thanks.

[Bug 154725] Re: Encrypted wireless networks crash gateway ml3109 with Realtek RTL 8185L in Gutsy

2008-08-22 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Thanks yoblin,

Hrm can you comment which version of linux-backports-modules you
installed? I'm seeing the rtl8180 driver in the linux-backports-modules
git tree for Hardy:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/ubuntu-hardy-lbm$ find -name rtl8180*
./updates/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180.h
./updates/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180_dev.c
./updates/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180_grf5101.c
./updates/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180_grf5101.h
./updates/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180_max2820.c
./updates/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180_max2820.h
./updates/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180_rtl8225.c
./updates/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180_rtl8225.h
./updates/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180_sa2400.c
./updates/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180_sa2400.h

I know the compat-wireless stack was recently pulled into linux-
backports-modules from upstream which likely provided the rtl8180
driver. It's likely this update is in a newer release of linux-
backports-modules which hasn't hit the repositories yet. It's likely
sitll sitting in -proposed. If you'd like to test the newer version of
linux-backports-modules that's in hardy-proposed, follow these
instructions:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

Otherwise you can just wait for it to get released and then retest.
Thanks.

Also the following contains changelog information for linux-backports-

[Bug 155966] Re: 7.10 install cd locks up

2008-08-22 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Thanks Tolbert,

Care to do one more test for me? The upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10
release is actively being worked on. Would you care to confirm this is
still an issue with the latest Alpha for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10
as it's likely a fix will need to go into the actively developed kernel
first and then backported if necessary. You should be able to test via
a LiveCD which can be found from http://www.ubuntu.com/testing. Please
let us know your results. If the issue still exists, would you maybe be
able to boot with the 'quiet' and 'splash' boot options removed? Do you
see the error messages? Would you be able to take a digital photo of
them and attach it to this bug report? For more information regarding
the kernel team bug policy, please refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we
appreciate your help and feedback.

Hi Geert,

Thanks for the feedback. Care to open a new bug report regarding the
issues you are seeing with WPA. It's helpful to the development teams
if bug reports target one specific issue.

Additionally, before making the new bug report, care to first test the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release which is actively being developed.
I'd be curious to know if this may already be fixed in the upcoming
release. More information regarding the latest Alpha can be found at

LiveCD. If the issue with WPA still exists please mention this in the
new report.  Thanks.

I don't think that I know enough to do all of that. If you want to give me
VERY specific step-by-step instructions I'll do it, but I won't be able to
do it otherwise. Downloading and burning an ISO CD is easy. Compiling my
own custom versions of Ubuntu is probably a little over my head. Ok, ALOT
over my head. I actually have 2 PE2500 servers available that I can use.
Let me know if you're willing to help me. I'll do anything I can to help,
but really the only thing that I'd be providing would be the hardware. I
don't have the brains for it yet.

[Bug 195308] Re: unable to resolve host

2008-08-22 Thread Scotty
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 32906 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/32906

So I've followed just about all tips, and none prove fruitful to me.
The following is a copy of my /etc/hosts file:

127.0.0.1 scotty
127.0.1.1 scotty-laptop

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Now when I try to run sudo commands from the shell, they produce the
typical:

sudo: unable to resolve host

But I can still edit files. In fact, it produced that when I did a:

sudo nano /etc/hosts

yet I was able to modify it, and save it (and yes, it did save). Yet I
still cannot run GUI administrator tools (change the time, system
settings, etc...).  Any ideas?

[Bug 260535] Re: Lilypond can not be installed, depends on lilypond-data (= 2.10.33-2.2)

2008-08-22 Thread Benjamin Drung
The lilypond package depends on the platform and the lilypond-data
package is independent. On i386 version 2.10.33-2.2build1 was build
without errors. Therefore lilypond-data 2.10.33-2.2build1 was build. But
on amd64 the build crashes:

Cannot open /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSans-Bold.pfb

So the lilypond package is not up to date. Because lilypond depends on
the exactly the same version of lilypond-data, it cannot be installed. I
am subscribing Martin Pitt, because he uploaded version
2.10.33-2.2build1.

[Bug 228693] Re: [SRU] bacula-director-pgsql postinstall broken

2008-08-22 Thread Steve Langasek
The bacula 2.2.8-5ubuntu7.2 version in the unapproved queue looks to
have a correct fix for this issue, but bug #227613 is still
verification-failed and no fix has been provided. Rejecting from the
queue; please provide a package that fixes both of these bugs at the
same time, or else roll back the changes for 227613 completely since we
shouldn't be including changes in SRUs that don't fix bugs.

Also, when uploading please build your source package with
-v2.2.8-5ubuntu7 so that the full changelog from the previous hardy
version is included; this helps the SRU team to be able to track the
bugs that are in need of verification.

[Bug 156905] Re: Visual effects on Radeon X300 RV370 5B60

2008-08-22 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Thanks for testing and the feedback Gavin. One more question - I'm
curious if you'd be able to disable visual affects all together when
testing. You mentioned With the fglrx non-free driver enabled, I have
no effects at all due to Composite extension not being supported. .
I'd like to narrow down if this is really an issue with the driver in
the kernel or rather with compiz. When looking at the debugging compiz
page - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingCompiz I saw a reference to a
known bug - https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server/+bug/96991 which I'm wondering is related or evena duplicate as
that bug reporter comments having Radeon hw as well. Thanks.

I don't know what the reason is that you're still getting this message
(probably a mismatch between your hostname and the names configured with
/etc/hosts - check the output of 'hostname' to be sure), but this line
is definitely wrong. 127.0.0.1 should always be localhost.

Hi Andres,

Care to do one more test for me? The upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10
release is actively being developed. Any fixes will need to be pushed
there first. Care to confirm this is still an issue with the latest
Alpha for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10. You should be able to test
via a LiveCD - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing. Please let us know your
results. If the issue still exists, per the kernel team's bug policy,
can you please attach the following updated information. Please be sure
to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature  version.log
* dmesg  dmesg.log

It would be good to attach the dmesg output which captures any error
messages. For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy,
please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks
again and we appreciate your help and feedback.

2008-08-22 Thread Scotty
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 32906 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/32906

So I've followed just about all tips, and none prove fruitful to me. The
following is a copy of my /etc/hosts file:

127.0.0.1 scotty
127.0.1.1 scotty-laptop

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Any ideas?

Strange, typing in:

scotty@:~$ hostname

returns nothing. A blank line. I originally had localhost as the
127.0.0.1 and changed it as per one of the suggested fixes. Changing
it back to localhost produces no positive results. Any idea how to
change the blank return for a call of the hostname (as I am assuming
that is part of the problem).

[Bug 156905] Re: Visual effects on Radeon X300 RV370 5B60

2008-08-22 Thread Gavin Hamill
With the X300 and all effects turned off, the system is perfectly stable
and sensible.

The comment about fglrx was made at a time when the ATI-provided driver
did not support the X Composite extension. I believe this has now
changed, although I have not tested it.

Thesedays I actually use an NVidia card, and have no problems at all
with full compiz support. I only keep the ATI X300 around to support
this bug :)

I've looked at 96991 but I don't really understand what's going on
there, I'm afraid.

[Bug 10550] Re: DVDs with restrictive permissions are unreadable for normal user

2008-08-22 Thread Dave L
I've long dealt with this problem. Anytime I come across a problematic
DVD, I've got to pop it open via sudo. Which of course raises all kinds
of security issues.

I can definitely see the difficulty this causes for a developer. Ideally
you want to preserve the permissions, yet the reality is the vast
majority of those DVD's floating around are meant to usable by anyone
who plops it in a drive.

I think something along the lines of a permission under the Users and
Groups like Use DVD as Owner might be an acceptable alternative or
perhaps a DVD user group that mounts DVD's as owner might suffice.

2008-08-22 Thread C David Rigby
Hi Pedro,

I should have come back and closed it but neglected to do so. Sorry about
that. The problem never recurred past the point where I instrumented
npviewer.bin. I assume that the bug got swatted during the normal course of
development, and an update installed the newer version on my systems.

Thanks  Regards,

 change the blank return for a call of the hostname (as I am assuming
 that is part of the problem).

You can set your hostname by running 'sudo hostname scotty-laptop'. To fix
this permanently (i.e., across reboots), set this name in the /etc/hostname
file.

[Bug 32906] Re: sudo fails if it cannot resolve the local hostname and no MTA is installed

2008-08-22 Thread Scotty
Figure I'll try and get this right now that I've posted this in
seemingly nothing but duplicate bug reports:

So I've followed just about all tips, and none prove fruitful to me. The
following is a copy of my /etc/hosts file:

127.0.0.1 scotty
127.0.1.1 scotty-laptop

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Any ideas?

now when i try to do a call of host name I get a blank line for a
return:

[code]
scotty@:~$ hostname

scotty@:~$
[/code]

Any idea what the cause of this is?

[Bug 260559] [NEW] kernel panic and system crash when copying files

2008-08-22 Thread dvlchd3
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libfile-copy-recursive-perl

All updates have been downloaded and applied and just a few applications
added. However, I have a ntfs partition from a former Windows partition
that I have been copying files off of onto my Ubuntu partition. It is
about 80GB of data. Twice I have started the copy, and both times the
copy has hung up the entire system. No key sequences I am aware of let
me do anything. I can't even use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to try to get to a text
session. All that my laptop does is annoyingly flash my Caps Lock light
on and off. I am assuming this is kernel panic. This may be a kernel

[Bug 32906] Re: sudo fails if it cannot resolve the local hostname and no MTA is installed

2008-08-22 Thread Steve Langasek
For the benefit of others who come across this bug:

  127.0.0.1 scotty

Don't do this. 127.0.0.1 should always resolve to 'localhost', not to
any other name.

  scotty@:~$ hostname

  scotty@:~$

This indicates that no hostname is set. To fix this temporarily, run:

  sudo hostname my_hostname

e.g.,

  sudo hostname scotty-laptop

The name you specify here should match the name mapped to 127.0.1.1 in
/etc/hosts.

To fix it permanently, edit the /etc/hostname to show the same name.

The problem of being unable to run the GUI tools may be a result of not
having all important system updates installed from hardy-updates. Once
your hostname is fixed, you should install these updates - to prevent
this problem from recurring in the future for you, and to address many
other bugs that have been fixed since the release of 8.04.
