[Bug 283003] Re: volume control should allow one-click-mute

2008-10-14 Thread Sebastien Bacher
thank you for your bug report, you can use your keyboard multimedia keys
to do there, the left click is used to open the slider, the middle click
to move the applet and the right click to open the context menu so they
can't be used to do something else now, closing the bug that's not one

[Bug 254326] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU #1 stuck for 11s -- Ubuntu 8.04.1 Kernel 2.6.24-19

2008-10-14 Thread pico78
I have the same problem like Mark Lanett posted before, but mybe i have
some additional information for you...

First: I have the D945GCLF2 Intel Board, riding Atom 330 dual Core CPU
on it, chipset is the old Intel 945 (like D945GCLF Board)

I had no problems running the plain mainboard (without PCI-Cards plugged
in) on Hardy and also on Intrepid (actual kernel on both).

I can reproduce soft lockups of the CPUs on hardy AND Intrepid as well,
if i follow these steps:

1: Plugin Soundcard in PCI-Slot (soundblaster xifi or terratec Aureon 5.1 PCI
make no diff.)
2: Turn on PC
3: everything works fine, on genome systemmonitor are 4 Cores displayed,
running fine, soundcard ( terratec) works out of the box
4: shutdown and start or restart
5: System stuckes on booting... every time
6: Unplug Soundcard
7:System starts fine again...

after step 7 you can start from step 1 again... everytime the same...
maybe something with recognition of new devices from bios?

i have tested one thing until now

after not booting up again, i set in grub acpi=no, now ubuntu starts up,
but takes MUCH longer, and after looking into system-monitor in gnome,
there is only 1 core displayed

is there any information i can give to you?

sorry for my poor english :)

[Bug 283100] [NEW] powertop shows kwin generating lots of wakeups (intrepid, kde4)

2008-10-14 Thread Julian Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

From powertop:

  20.3% ( 83.3) knotify4 : schedule_timeout (process_timeout)
  17.6% ( 72.4)   interrupt : [EMAIL PROTECTED]::00:02.0
  14.8% ( 60.7) kwin : schedule_timeout (process_timeout)
  10.3% ( 42.3) firefox : futex_wait (hrtimer_wakeup)
   9.3% ( 38.1) interrupt : extra timer interrupt
   3.9% ( 16.0) kernel IPI : Rescheduling interrupts
   3.9% ( 16.0) kernel module : usb_hcd_poll_rh_status (rh_timer_func)

It looks like it's waking up at the same frequency that my screen is
getting refreshed (60Hz), which is roughly in line with the interrupts
on the intel Xorg driver.

This is obviously bad for laptop power consumption. On Hardy, I had ~80
wakeups/second total at idle so this is quite a regression.

[Bug 263059] Re: [regression] 2.6.27-7 sometimes fails to boot (iwl3945 issue?)

2008-10-14 Thread Marcin Feder
Sebastian: No problem. I have also originally reported my problem in
this thread. I decided to fill in a new bug because my system have never
finished boot process if the driver wasn't blacklisted. However there
are many similarities to the situation reported in this thread.

I think it can be useful if one of the reporters could boot with the
driver blacklisted and than try to load it using modprobe and post dmesg
output. One more observation is that command modprobe iwl3945 does not
hang itself but when I subsequently run a program that tries to access
the driver like iwconfig than it hangs permanently.

I can also confirm that issue persist in the kernel 2.6.27-7-generic

[Bug 209794] Re: Clear Private Data does not clear private data from the Awesome Bar's Rich Results list

2008-10-14 Thread Romano Giannetti
This is a me too with a comment: this is not limited to the Rich Results
list.
Before doing a clear private data:

(0)pern:~/.mozilla/firefox/az16pkko.default% du Cache OfflineCache
48024 Cache
8 OfflineCache

after doing it:

(0)pern:~/.mozilla/firefox/az16pkko.default% du Cache OfflineCache
48024 Cache
8 OfflineCache

I noticed that because I uploaded a file to my web server and Firefox
continues to give me the old version no matter what I do (MS Explorer
works ok).

I tried to set clear on exit and restarting it, whatever, to no avail. So I
think this bug is
worse than what suggested here.

Are you sure this is a bug and not a feature? ;)
You have to give all the necessary information (certificates etc.) to make the
forward button clickable. So in the screenshot above, it is normal that the
button is unclickable, as there is no information given.

Re: [Bug 147560] Re: Kernel detects battery management wrong (MSI PR200 / System76)

2008-10-14 Thread Idan Mashaal
A few months ago I asked MSI about the diffrence between 1.xx and 3.xx and
got this response:
Bios V3.XX is for windows XP.Bios V1.xx is for windows Vista. The
differences between these two version BIOS are not only AHCI,but also
SLP(system lock preinstallation, and others. So I advise you to use the right
BIOS version.

I really didn't understand what SLP is and what 'others' mean, but I guess
that if somone wants to use SATA, then 1.xx is the safer way (but that
doesn't belong to this bug).

About SLP - does anyone here know what that means ? or is it related to this
?

Thanks,
Idan.

i can certainly try it, but if the only difference is default setting for

[Bug 150872] Re: Installer should not list removable media in /etc/fstab

2008-10-14 Thread Colin Watson
I think this will cause problems during pkgsel (or for certain kinds of
ubiquity installs), because apt-cdrom won't be able to make use of
packages on the CD.

Instead, in the USB install case I think we need to remove /cdrom from
/etc/fstab at the end of the installation, in a finish-install script
(for d-i) and in custom scripts/install.py code (for ubiquity).

[Bug 280123] Re: dhcp3-server needs if-up.d/if-down.d scripts for better network-manager compatibility

2008-10-14 Thread Thierry Carrez
Proposed /etc/network/if-up.d/dhcp3-server

Would a ifup.d script like this work for you ?
It is based on the openssh-server one. Like for openssh-server, I don't think
an ifdown.d script is necessary, as dhcp3-server seems to cope with downed
interfaces quite happily.

Let me know if it sounds ok and I'll prepare a proper debdiff.

to contain the same connection_message_func(): Callback errors anyway.

2008-10-14 Thread Wouter Stomp
** Summary changed:

- [needs-packaging] HotSSH
+ Please sync hotssh (0.2.5-1) from debian unstable

** Description changed:

HotSSH is an interface to Secure Shell, for GNOME and OpenSSH. It
intends to be a better experience than simply invoking ssh from an
  existing terminal window.

  * Fast search-based interface for new connections
  * Also display and search of local (Avahi) SSH servers
  * Tabbed display with automatic session saving (Firefox style)
  * Status bar with information like latency to server and output of remote
uptime
  * Close integration with OpenSSH features like connection sharing
(near-instant new tabs)
  * NetworkManager integration to easily reconnect after a network change,
great for laptops

  http://www.gnome.org/projects/hotssh/
  license: gplv2
+

[Bug 283168] [NEW] gfloppy write permission denied with external usb floppy

2008-10-14 Thread marco.pallotta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

If I try to format an external usb floppy drive I see the error Cannot
initialize device ... you do not have the proper permissions to write to
/dev/floppy/0 or /dev/fd0 formatting will not be possible.. In fact my usb
floppy is mounted as /dev/sdb (I can see this from df command or from dmesg).
I think this is a first bug.
Then I launch gfloppy with --device /dev/sdb but the error is similar.
If I try to write into the floppy all runs ok.
If I try to mkfs.msdos -I /dev/sdb from root (with sudo) the format process
runs ok.

[Bug 280159] Re: Intrepid 2.6.27-6 fails to boot with white screen

2008-10-14 Thread Pat Double
Actually 2.6.27-6 does not fix this. It appears to be the v86d package.
I had installed it about the time the kernel upgrade occurred. I removed
this and I have performed several cycles and have not had a problem.
With v86d the behavior varies, sometimes I get the white screen,
sometimes I get a usplash screen but with strange colors and
resolutions, once I did get the correct splash screen.

[Bug 280123] Re: dhcp3-server needs if-up.d/if-down.d scripts for better network-manager compatibility

2008-10-14 Thread Thierry Carrez
Hm, after more analysis I'm no longer convinced that this is
appropriate.

In the openssh-server case, the if-up.d script just calls the initscript
reload action, which sends a SIGHUP to the process (if any). This
doesn't have any side-effects.

This is not the same for dhcp3-server. There is no reload action so we call
restart, which does stop/sleep 2/start.
* this is called when interfaces are brought up at boot time, resulting in boot
delay
* /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server start is called after the if-up.d script already
started dhcp3-server, which is confusing, to say the least
* it results in DHCP server not serving addresses for a small time every time
an interface is brought up
* More unanticipated breakage potential

The correct way to do it would be to have :
- an ifup.d script that returns immediately if dhcp3-server isn't already
started, so that it doesn't affect the boot. However dhcp3-server doesn't
really start a process if there are no interfaces available, so the resulting
ifup script would not start it if needed interfaces are later brought up...
defeating the whole point of this bug, I suppose
- a graceful restart feature in dhcp3-server so as to minimize those reloads
impact

So my guess is that dhcp3-server isn't sufficiently smart to be
integrated into ifup/ifdown without dirty side-effects...

Re: [Bug 214063] Re: Nightly build for updating on 4/8 caused error exceed of bios cyclinder on reboot

2008-10-14 Thread datilcowman
To resolve my problem, I reloaded the computer with a later issue of
Ubuntu. The problem will probably reocur when when more Kernels are
released, as of now, there are only two active kernels. I would like to see
a program that would erase the oldest kernel when a new one is released and
is updated in manager update. From what I understand, this is an issue only
with the older bios which limits the sector that the kernel is loaded into
to boot. Since most people are purchasing newer computers, this may not be
worth your time to work on. I would suggest that if you do, then when a new
kernel is released, a program would replace the older kernel with the new
one (probably as an option on update). Thanks,

Monte Edwards

[Bug 283217] [NEW] Volume HotKey after latest upgrade to hotkey-setup package

2008-10-14 Thread psmallcastle72
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hotkey-setup

This morning I initiated an upgrade via Synaptic and after the hotkey-
setup had been upgraded to version 0.1-23ubuntu6, the volume hotkeys on
my Sony Vaio VGN-A71M quit working. Actually, the graphical overlay
(volume) still works but apparently with no direct effect on sound
hardware.

[Bug 283215] [NEW] [intrepid] switching workspaces with absolute keybindings not always shifting focus

2008-10-14 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I have Alt-F1..Alt-F4 mapped to switch to workspaces 1..4 and I have
IRC/mail/web applications on different workspaces, so I switch back and
forth quite a lot.

Within the last few days I am seeing that quite a lot of the times I
switch workspace, focus is not transferring to a window on the target
workspace. It happens some of the time, but it always used to be
entirely reliable.

Re: [Bug 283079] [NEW] volume step is too large, and cannot be reduced

 I recently upgraded to Intrepid.

When I press the volume up/down keys on my laptop, the volume OSD
appears and shows that the volume changes. Unfortunately it gives me
very little granularity: I can have either 25%, 51%, 77% or 100% going
up from muted, or 74%, 48% or 22% going down from 100%. I almost always
want a volume somewhere in between these values (48% is typically much
too soft, and 74% is typically too loud).

Hi Andrew,

Please open a terminal and run xev then while it is running press
to change the volume by one step using the volume keys. Do you
get a single keypress, or multiple?

Thanks,

James
