[Bug 238130] Re: CD/DVD Creator fails torecognise blank DVD (8.04)

2008-11-18 Thread Paul Arzul
i'm having the same problem but only after upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10.
blank cds are recognized (and record fine), but blank dvds (verbatim
dvd+r) are not recognized (by nautilus, brasero or k3b). i've got a LG,
vendor HL-DT-ST, model RW/DVD GCC-H31N.

no question is asked when inserting a blank dvd, and no application recognizes
that one has been inserted.
synaptic is uptodate, and uname reports i'm on 2.6.27-7-generic.

this is an AMD64 system.

[Bug 293535] Re: CPU always 100% CPU

2008-11-18 Thread Jarek Zgoda
I can confirm, removing stale configuration makes gconfd to behave
normally.

I had exactly the same problem after fresh installing 8.10 with /home
partition from 8.04 retained. gconfd was constantly eating ~30% of CPU,
effectively draining the battery of my laptop in 40 minutes. I asked on
ubuntuforums if anybody discovered such weirdness, but got no response
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=983335).

[Bug 297148] Re: luma wrong md4 hashes

Hi,

Thanks for the patch. I have reported the problem to the authors of the
software.

While the patch looks sensible to me I would like to wait a while to see
if they respond.

It would be useful if you could give us instructions on how to reproduce the
problem so that we can test the fix.

Thanks,

James

[Bug 276445] Re: Madwifi (atheros) driver malfunction induces a system freeze

2008-11-18 Thread Vangelis Tasoulas
Hello,

I have exactly the same problem!

I have a wireless router with ubuntu 8.04.1 server amd64 installed in it.
linux-restricted-modules-server is installed and the three atheros cards I have
on the computer are working, but my logs are filled of the following messages.

As I realized, if there is heavy traffic in the wireless links, I get a
system freeze and the only way to make it work again, is to hard reset
the system.

My hardy heron server installation is a clean installation without extra
software installed from any other repositories or compiled by myself.

[Bug 259214] Re: wired connection settings are lost after reboot

Right. In fact read-only connections should be better marked in
connection editor. We are missing that information however in the
applet and only get an error upon saving. I am thinking about a
solution and will discuss that with upstream. If we cannot find a fix
in time for release, we will surely look into fixing this in form of a
 SRU.

I think it's right.
I add a new connection, and set static address, then set it connect
automatically, not system setting, the default 'Auto eth0' change to not
connect automatically, save it.
Reboot, it's work.

[Bug 299453] [NEW] The Ubuntu File Manager skips a line

2008-11-18 Thread Vikas
Public bug reported:

Today when i was trying out a few things i noticed that when i keep on
pressing the right arrow in the file manager, it jumped to the next line
if there was no file left in the same line. But in a funny way when i
did this on the second line, it always jumped to the fourth line instead
of the third line. I think so this is a minor bug, but still thought
that it should be reported. I don't know whether this bug was present in
the previous versions because i explored this feature for the first time
today, but i cross checked and this happened in all my folders with
filesnames spread over 4 lines. I was using the icons view.

If you need any further details then please do tell me

[Bug 269831] Re: toshset does not support tlsup module (Intrepid)

2008-11-18 Thread Andrew Simpson
I've now managed to get this working. It involved patching and
recompiling simply the toshiba_acpi module, then manually installing the
module. Since I don't really understand what I'm doing, I don't know if
this is the easiest way to get it to work, but it fixed the problem for
me.

I've put a step-by-step guide on the Ubuntu forum here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6203606#post6203606

To try and answer questions individually in case it's still useful:
Andy Whitcroft: I'd figured out the same as you about commenting out the line
in toshiba_acpi.modprobe, however this caused the modprobe to silently fail. No
output, but lsmod would not find it.

Ante Karamatić: I guess the patch that shipped is the one I applied?
Even though it says 'historic reference,' it's very much needed:
http://memebeam.org/free-software/toshiba_acpi/

Apparently because of the patch, it's not possible to load the toshiba
and toshiba_acpi modules simultaneously - I don't know what the toshiba
one does though, I don't seem to need it. Depending on which is loaded
first, the second gives a device or resource busy error. I think this
is because they both create/use /dev/toshiba ?

Andy Whitcroft: I'll download and try that kernel now.

[Bug 299454] [NEW] Itrepid Ibex: Nautilus list mode quick search inconsistency.

2008-11-18 Thread DLCBurggraaff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Intrepid: In Nautilus list mode navigate to e.g. /etc and in the right (list)
pane type the letter s. In the LRH corner a text entry box pops up and the
samba directory is highlighted in the middle of the list pane. Now double
click on the samba directory name to open that directory. Instead the topmost
directory on list pane (proftpd in my case) is opened ...
Sometimes first doing a single click helps, but often this single click already
opens the topmost directory.
The workaround is to hit esc to close the text popup (or wait for it to close
by itself) before doing the double click.

In Hardy the single or double click closed the text popup and a next
double click was required to open the directory.

[Bug 174759] Re: Eclipse crashes due to jvm crash

2008-11-18 Thread Claudio Margulhano
Hi,

I realized that this occurred with many people ...
I do not use Gnome, the official distribution of SuSE is KDE 3.5 ...
Thank God the Eclipse worked.
These post here of the forum were very helpful.
I do not need the JVM from Sun for the development of my applications. My
clients use Windows, then do the tests for the application I need to use
VirtualBox for example.

Long live the Linux community !

Thank you very much.

Claudio

[Bug 106060] Re: [r128 1002:5446] Selecting the Molecule screensaver makes the PC freeze. It is completely unresponsive.

2008-11-18 Thread opto
I am new to Linux and Ubuntu and have the apparently troublesome Rage 128. I
was surprised (disappointed) to encounter the Molecules bug 10 minutes after my
first install of Ubuntu 8.10. I can't change it because entering the
screensaver menu freezes the system. I must reinstall Ubuntu (or remove the
Molecule file) if I want to avoid rebooting the system using the power cord.
Not a very encouraging intro to Linux and Ubuntu. It crashed almost as many
times in one evening as with the other OS over 5 years.
I used my older computer system and at the time the Rage 128 cards were very
popular for home and business. There are likely many more users that will
encounter this problem. I'm now concerned other applications that may have
similar problems with this card.Hopefully this bug will get some needed
attention.
Also helpful is to disable the preview as the default when entering the
screensaver menu. That would allow bypassing the bug. Thanks.

[Bug 299435] Re: appearance

2008-11-18 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

2008-11-18 Thread Xpi6
I still have the same issue, on an old Sony VAIO, running Xubuntu

Shutdown, log out switch user have always been a bit buggy (tending to
go halfway, then freeze with just the wallpaper and cursor showing,
especially in lomem situations), but since upgrading to Intrepid
shutdown and log out seem to be a bit better, while switch user now
always fails with the Cannot start new display \n The X server failed.
Perhaps it is not configured well. dialog.

[Bug 296381] Re: new upstream version - Mednafen 0.8.A

2008-11-18 Thread James Westby
Hi,

I have libasound2 installed on a normal Ubuntu Intrepid system, what problem
do you have when you try and install it?

Please work that out and test it and then I or someone else will sponsor
it.

Thanks,

James

[Bug 197639] Re: [fglrx] xv output not available for video playback

2008-11-18 Thread Stefan Kost
Oh my. The upgrade mechanism forgot to update which kernel is loaded by default
(/boot/grub/menu.lst default was 2 and not 0). Now everything works almost
fine. I have desktop effects and xvideo (including the flickering bug).
The xvideo is definitely borked as it also sort of stays in fron (menus open
behind).

[Bug 299458] [NEW] Ricoh IPSiO NX730N won't work on Ubuntu 8.10

2008-11-18 Thread afujihara
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

I couldn't identify the package that causes the bug.

My printer (Ricoh IPSiO NX730N) won't print documents after upgrading from 8.04
to 8.10.
I usually use Ricoh ps driver Ver.3.0.1 (265 KB) on Ubuntu 8.04 which can be
downloaded
from the following website.
http://support.ricoh.com/bbv2/html/dr_ut_d/ipsio/model/nx630/winxp/winxp.htm
http://support.ricoh.com/w/bb/pub_j/dr_ut_d/411/411007/V301/5121932/121932.exe

Actually the file (121932.exe) is a executable one for windows.
I extract .PPD from this file with using wine.
$ wine 121932.exe

And I can obtain the printer driver for NX730N, which is
121932/XP_VISTA/DISK1/RINX73N3.PPD .

By going to System - System management - Printing,
I apply this RINX73N3.PPD for Ricoh IPSiO NX730N printer.

In the above procedures, the printer surely worked on 8.04,
but it wouldn't after upgrading to 8.10.

Currently, there is no error log in /var/log/cups/error_log.

[Bug 290831] Re: Freevo does not work with Intrepid

2008-11-18 Thread rstanchak
My bad, PyXML is in ubuntu as python-xml, ignore my previous comment.

This post from the freevo mailing list details a straightforward
solution:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=b6f91c990807090103n283aee5o78579a361d291a17%40mail.gmail.com

Summary:
- ubuntu is dropping python-xml (see
http://www.aigarius.com/blog/2008/05/06/ubuntu-removing-xml-from-python/), and
now some packages have been moved.
- add the following to the beginning of /etc/freevo/local_conf.py
sys.path.append('/usr/lib/python%s/site-packages/oldxml' % sys.version[:3])

Thanks for the patch.

I wonder if there is a code way to fix this? Would it be possible to

I don't think there is anything wrong with your selected patch, I would
just like to understand the issue a little better.

[Bug 299461] [NEW] Graphics in web pages do not print using default settings

2008-11-18 Thread bwallum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

This is an old problem still unresolved fully. The way it manifests for
me is, for example:-

Go to news.bbc.co.uk

FilePrint Preview works and shows the images.
FilePrint (without changing any settings) prints with black rectangles where
the images should be.

That is clearly a bug when preview and print display different results.

However FilePrint then choose the Options tab, check the Print
Background check box and then print and the images are printed as per
the Preview.

I first reported this to the cups project. They sent me this reply:

From Till Kamppeter

QUOTE:
bwallum, you are hit by a Firefox bug. I have visited the site you mention and
then I have chosen to print to a file in the printing dialog (first entry of
the printer list). I have tried with both the PostScript and PDF output formats
and get black images in both cases. So the data arriving at CUPS when choosing
to print to a real printer is already broken.

Please report a new bug for the firefox package.
ENDQUOTE

I have attached my printer set up and files used. The bug is repeatable
every time for me. I'm running the latest updates for Intrepid as of
18th November 2009

[Bug 291313] Re: After upgrade to 8.10 no audio sound

2008-11-18 Thread Luc Theriault
I have performed a clean install of Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop. I also have a
NVidia CK804 with ALC850. I am using the SP/DIF After the
installation, I had no sound.

I followed your advice and killed PulseAudio by performing the following
in a terminal window:

ps -ef | grep pulseaudio
kill PID, where PID is the process id of pulse audio shown in the
previous command.

I assume that sudo /etc/init.d/pulseaudio stop will work, but have not
tried it.

I then had to open alsamixer and unmute the IEC958 and ensure the
IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA volume level was set to 0.

I now have sound. Everytime I reboot, I have to kill PulseAudio. Does
anyone know how to get PulseAudio working? or should i just prevent it
from starting up?

fixing the seeds and language-support-fonts-ja.
