[Bug 315950] Re: [needs-packaging] FoFiX (Frets on Fire X)

2009-02-16 Thread Pascal Giard
FWIW, as one of FoFiX's developer and Debian maintainer, i've been
planning to package FoFiX for Debian/Ubuntu as soon as we tackle the
performance issues with Python2.5+PyOpenGL3.x.

There's been recent progress (last weekend) on the font rendering
issues, hopefully we (FoFiX devs) will be able to move on soon. As
always, any help is appreciated, head to our googlecode page
(http://fofix.googlecode.com).

Btw, in the meantime i continue to provide frozen binairies for the
32bit architecture* that use python2.4+PyOpenGL2.x .

* I can provide 64bit binairies upon popular request.

[Bug 315679] Re: Please merge libmtp 0.3.0-1ubuntu3 (main) to 0.3.6-1 from Debian (experimental)

2009-02-16 Thread Luke Yelavich
This PPA version,
http://ppa.launchpad.net/medigeek/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/libm/libmtp/libmtp_0.3.6-1ubuntu1~ppajaunty1.dsc
still doesn't have the changelog entries that it needs. The changelog
entries in question are the ones from the debian package, such as for
this change:

  * debian/watch: Use the qa.debian.org SF redirector URL

Bug Fixes:
#266147 : Verify signature of the encrypted text, if any. (Milan Crha)
#534938 : Remember which IDs we added to the folder and ignore these in
report of recent messages, because we know about them already. (Milan Crha)

#567861 : Two sources also differ when one has set color_spec and the
other not. (Milan Crha)
#569459 : Revert back to including libical/ical*.h. This is what is
suggested by the upstream folks. Since libical.pc (in 0.43) has a problem with
its CFlags, make necessary adjustments. (Suman Manjunath)
#570653 : Kill n_std_folders and use G_N_ELEMENTS (std_folders)
instead. (Matthew Barnes)
#571726 : Fix a translatable string typo. Does not break string freeze.
(Matthew Barnes)
#571761 : Stop using deprecated GtkType macros. (Matthew Barnes)

Other contributions:

Fix -Wold-style-definition warnings (Andre Klapper)

[Bug 192469] Re: [hardy] nautilus crash with Segmentation fault right clicking on Properties of an image file

2009-02-16 Thread Peter Watkins
I'm seeing the same problem, and also have an empty /var/crash directory.
Running hardy 8.04.2 x86_64, all packages up to date. This sounds like the same
bug reported here for Fedora:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=472439 as a bug in libexempi (and
apparently resolved). Use the .exv sample data in that ticket's initial entry
to reproduce. That is:
 1) make a JPEG (I used Gimp to convert a PNG screenshot to JPEG)
 2) install exiv2
 3) use exiv2 to remove any metadata from the image from step 1
 4) save the Fedora bugzilla sample bad .exv with the same basename as the JPEG
made in step 1
 5) use exiv2 to import the bugzilla sample metadata into the jpeg
 6) in Nautilus, right-click on the image icon and request its properties.

Or just try viewing the properties of the JPEG I'm attaching now (which
uses the Fedora bugzilla sample metadata)... crashes Nautilus for me
every time I request its properties (as do a number of my own pictures,
taken with a Canon camera).

[Bug 326718] Re: [Jaunty] Multiple DNS resolver issues on ia32 and AMD64

2009-02-16 Thread H Akihana
An update:

I noticed, looking at my firewall log, that some packets to the
nameserver were getting blocked by the firewall. On the off-chance, I
switched back to my original stand-alone ufw firewall to see if that
would change things - apt-get update works now! Now I need to figure out
why the iptables script should have been blocking apt-get but not dig.

Slightly red face, and sorry if I've wasted anyone's time. At least I've
learned something, even if it isn't of much help to you people. (And I
don't have to re-restore from backup, which is nice.)

I notice that the source directory has been completely removed for
Mythbuntu, which is cool I guess. The Kubuntu-kde4-8.04.1-src and
Xubuntu-8.04.1-src are still empty.

Since the Kubuntu-kde4 went away with 8.10 that problem has gone away in
8.10. The only funky thing left is the Xubuntu-8.10-src-1.iso is still
an empty file.

[Bug 330343] [NEW] webcam stops working in the middle of a session

2009-02-16 Thread Dave Cabot
Public bug reported:

I apologize if this is the wrong spot for this. I'm not sure where to put it.
While in skype and in the middle of a video call the webcam stops working. The
little blue light goes out, video stops, microphone stops. It always happens,
but the amount of time varies. 1-20 minutes. No errors in /var/log/syslog.
Work around is to quit skype, unplug webcam, plug in webcam, start skype.

OS: Ubuntu Intrepid
webcam: ID 046d:09c1 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Deluxe for Notebooks
skype: 2.0.0.72
HW: Acer aspire 5315-2077

I realize that I don't have enough info to determine if this is a

needed to determine such.

2009-02-16 Thread petershev
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager-core

When I upgrade a system from Gutsy to hardy using do-release-upgrade it
works fine but when it asks Do you want to start the upgrade? the
prompt is Continue [yN] Details [d] The expected respons would
therefor be y, n or d but it will only work when you type the full yes,
no or details. You would also expect that if you hit enter it would
exit and it does not do this.

Having traced through the code it look like the problem is in
DistUpgradeViewText.py line 173. It is comparing, for instance _(y)
with the text entered but it looks like the y is converted to yes when
LANG=en_AU.UTF-8. it could be that the .mo file is incorrect or maybe
the code.

[Bug 245946] Re: Intrepid Ibex - Lost sound after dist-upgrade

2009-02-16 Thread shanen (Shannon Jacobs)
Me, too, on the death of sound. Tried many of the things in this thread,
followed some of the links and tried lots of the things in those places,
too. Already spent way too much time on this, so I'm giving up, but just
feel obliged to note that it seems to be another example of Ubuntu not
being ready for prime time. Even if it's a major upgrade, it should not
cripple your system to this degree.

I like Ubuntu and will continue to use it. It works quite well on about
five machines, pretty well on one, and quite poorly on this one (where
the upgrade has broken other things besides the sound). I may have a
masochistic streak. However, I cannot recommend it to anyone else, and
especially not to friends or beginners. I think it quite sad and
unfortunate that Linux basically completely failed to take advantage of
the Vista debacle.

[Bug 326718] Re: [Jaunty] Multiple DNS resolver issues on ia32 and AMD64

2009-02-16 Thread floid
Heh! Let me know if you notice a difference between the apt-get / libc
resolver queries and dig ones, that may be useful!

I've just realized that, of course, wireshark should have a lazy-
person's DNS dump interpreter, which should save me some time on the
manual sanity-checking of individual bytes. Of course, for all I know,
I may be forgetting an option to tcpdump itself that'd do the
equivalent, I'm lucky to remember -X on a good day.

[Bug 330347] [NEW] Full screen visualization should disable screen saver?

2009-02-16 Thread Darwin Award Winner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Since the fullscreen visualization in Rhythmbox is pretty much a
screensaver in its own right, it seems that it would be appropriate for
Rhythmbox to inhibit the screensaver starting while it is displaying a
full screen visualization, and also possibly while it is in party mode.

Unless there's a good reason not to that I'm not thinking of. If so,
just close this report.

[Bug 179885] Re: Capital of Ecuador needs to be added to the Time Zone settings

2009-02-16 Thread Ruben Romero
Yes, América/Guayaquil is the right timezone for Quito and should be
more than enough.

I remember seeing Guayaquil and not Quito when installing GNU/Linux and
having the feeling that Quito should be there, but I have to agree with
Martin's comment regarding the size of a city and how known it is in the
outside world.

Guayaquil is by far the biggest city in the country, and although I love
Quito and would like to see it in the map, I think we should keep a
global view in this issue and just leave things as they are.

Quito is the capital. Guayaquil is the biggest city, Galapagos need no
introduction. One nation, 2 timezones, no need to have a third point of
reference.

I'd like to see this bug closed or changed into a KDE bug?

[Bug 330351] [NEW] mail-notification widget hangs in KDE4 taskbar

2009-02-16 Thread Vik
Public bug reported:

Using current updated 8.10 with KDE4 desktop (Heron theme) on AMD Turion
dual-screen laptop.

Two IMAP mailboxes being searched, both running OK.

mail-notification running in system tray. Shows 1 on envelope
indicating one message pending.

In preferences, it is set to regard new mail as read if clicked.

Hovering cursor shows the header of the 1 mail message. it is spam and
will be auto-removed by Thunderbird in this particular test.

Clicking the mail-notification icon in the system tray does not appear
to change it.

Hovering the cursor over the icon now no longer shows the header of any
mail message (even if there are new ones).

Right-clicking on the icon no longer brings up the menu.

The mail count on the icon never changes again.

[Bug 302564] Re: Hangs after startx + logout + startx

2009-02-16 Thread Bryce Harrington
Loic, again though that sounds to be a separate issue from this one, so
should be handled as a separate bug report. If you don't see an exact
match already in -intel feel free to open a new report, but we do have a
pretty large quantity of performance-related bug reports to -intel
(seems they're putting out a lot of changes to their code that maybe
aren't sufficiently tested) so it may already be covered.

One thing to check in particular is any differences between the
Xorg.0.log's for both cases, to see if for instance DRI got turned off
or something. Again though, best to handle as a separate bug report.

[Bug 330353] [NEW] boot-up hangs at multiple stages

2009-02-16 Thread sonicsteve
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.10, This was not a problem in 8.04
During the boot process, just after the orange bar appears that bounces from
side to side the system will pause. The only way I've found so far to unpause
is by pressing and holding the spacebar. If I press the spacebar and release it
will advance the boot process slightly but when I press and hold it the boot up
continues as normal.

The happened during the boot up of the 8.10 live CD also, After all
updates are done, even backports and proposed, the pause is still there.

I have a compaq presario f700 series laptop, and there are others with this
same issue, see thread;

The common link seems to be they are all HP/compaq laptops.

[Bug 330300] Re: uqm recommends/suggests packages that don't exist

2009-02-16 Thread bettlebrox
Thanks, found it mentioned in /usr/share/doc/uqm-content/README.Debian .
It just seems weird to suggest packages that aren't in the system by
default.

However, On my Debian testing desktop, both uqm-voice uqm-music are available
the default repos. Looks like they are both in Lenny, which means the comments
in the README might be out-of-date.
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/uqm-music
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/uqm-voice

And the readme at the alternative Debian repo ( http://uqm.debian.net/README )
says:
This site is deprecated: The packages are in debian non-free now for unstable
and testing.

Which means they could be included in Ubuntu in the future.

How about skipping the question if a .screenrc exists already? This

annoying to people that don't want to see the question.

[Bug 330355] [NEW] Latest Kernel stops Dell Mini 9 wired ethernet

2009-02-16 Thread Ian Soutar
Public bug reported:

I spent a day working on the wired internet ... it was broken after the
last kernel update.

I upgraded to 8.10 and it worked before an update.

This is on the new Dell Mini 9 with firmware A04 ... the newest firmware
from Dell.

When I go back to the previous version the wired ethernet starts up
again. Not a big deal since I use wireless ... but it is broken.

[Bug 63172] Re: Better vimrc default

2009-02-16 Thread Dustin Kirkland
I'm confirming the syntax on portion of this bug. I think this is a
very sane default when full vim is installed.

The indentation part, though, is more controversial, I'm afraid. Too
often vim doesn't do the correct thing. Or, more precisely, there is no
universal correct indentation.

I think we can fix the color part without offending too many people. I
don't think we can fix the indentation part of this bug without
offending a lot of people.

[Bug 330300] Re: uqm recommends/suggests packages that don't exist

2009-02-16 Thread Emmet Hikory
Thanks for double-checking. Based on your research, I've looked a bit
more, and it appears they will be included in Ubuntu starting with the
9.04 release (and are already in the jaunty repositories, in
multiverse). I'm afraid there's no solution for earlier releases, but
with the remote repo having changed, this is indeed an issue, and it has
been solved for future releases. There's also a bug in that the README
file is wrong, but that's a minor issue, and ought not matter once the
transition is complete (with the Lenny release and the upcoming Jaunty
release). In the meantime, it should be safe to use the packages from
Lenny.

[Bug 316960] Re: SB0160 still not working after blacklisting snd_via82xx and snd_via82xx_modem.

2009-02-16 Thread floppy514
I had a similar problem (no sound) with SB0160, which is now solved.
The problem was not where I thought it was; not sure your problem is the same,
but here it is:

p...@groovy:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=intrepid
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 8.10
p...@groovy:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Audigy ]: Audigy - Audigy 1 ES [SB0160]
  Audigy 1 ES [SB0160] (rev.3, serial:0x521102) at 0xd200,
irq 19

It's plugged on a gigabyte ga-ep45-ds5 motherboard, with intel ICH10
chipset integrated sound deactivated within bios setup (hence not seen
in the previous command).

The only thing that was missing for me was to unselect Audigy
Analog/Digital Output Jack, in the parameter tab of the gnome volume
controller. I found the tip here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4301880#post4301880

I guess having both audio controllers (motherboard chipset and audigy)
should not be a problem, as long as you have the one you choosed
(audigy) as card0, as most applications will only talk to this card, as
I've seen somewhere on a forum.

I haven't tried it yet, but here are some descriptions about how to do it:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/MultipleCards

Mainly, it's all about forcing card numbering in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
base with the index= option.

Hope this helps.

[Bug 329927] Re: iwlagn conflicts with nvidia binary drivers 8.10 causes kernel panic

2009-02-16 Thread Aavery
** Description changed:

  Tested on
  Linux host-name 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 29 19:28:32 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux
also tested on x686 version of ubuntu 8.10
  Distributor ID: Ubuntu
  Description: Ubuntu 8.10
  Release: 8.10
  Codename: intrepid

When Nvidia proprietary binary modules are loaded. modules 173 all
versions, modules 177 all versions, modules 180 all versions. There is
a kernel panic every couple boot cycles just after iwlagn begins to
  initiate connection.

this is the last line from the daemon log
NetworkManager: info (wlan0): supplicant manager is now in state 1 (from
0).
  acpid: client connected from 5720[0:0]
nm-system-settings: Adding default connection 'Auto eth0' for
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/net_00_22_15_5e_5b_a7

The hardware is an intel 5100 agn chipset and an nvidia 9600gs.
blacklisting the iwlagn and iwlcore in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist stops the
panic

If there is anything at all that might help solve this problem this is
very new hardware less than 6 months old I'd be happy to help, my only
recourse is to try a different wifi card and see if that stops the panic
  as well.

  ProblemType: Bug
  Architecture: amd64

[Bug 263963] Re: [iwl*] NetworkManager/wicd fail to authenticate to WPA Enterprise networks

2009-02-16 Thread Scott R.
Any progress on this bug?

I also am on an intrepid install with problems connecting to a lynksis
router on a home WPA-Personal Network.

I've tried the gconf-editor instruction to edit the values. (a
href=http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1010650;here/a)

I've also tried using wcid instead, hangs just as much.

Can i expect an update BEFORE jaunty?

I don't know about the rest of you, but for me, the functionality of
wireless internet is VERY important. What if we our at a university and
can't mess with the router? No internet in my mind = pointless computer.
Afterall, how are we supposed to get anything useful on our ubuntu
install if we don't have internet? Even worse, how can we upgrade our
network manager to fix this bug in the first place?

I thought this was the OS that Just works

Some specs:

Dell inspiron 1525
Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card Wireless Network Adaptor

As far as i can tell, the problem is that whenever i attempt to connect
using network-manager-gnome, it changes values in what i want to say is
the registry, but that sounds like windows. ( the values edited by
gconf-editor)

Thank you for any responses.

[Bug 322430] Re: package linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic 2.6.27-11.25 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-02-16 Thread iamamish
I just had something similar happen to me. One of the options for
dealing with a modified 'menu.lst' file is to be dropped into a shell to
examine the situation. I did that, then wasn't sure what I was supposed
to do when I was done. So, I typed 'exit' at the shell prompt when I was
done making a backup of my menu.lst file, which caused the error.

When you're dropped into a shell like that, it'd be helpful to display
some type of help to tell you what it is you're supposed to do when
you're done with the shell that is created for you.

[Bug 322430] Re: package linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic 2.6.27-11.25 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-02-16 Thread iamamish
Addendum to my previous comment - to be clear, it wasn't making the copy
of menu.lst that caused the problem - it was exiting from the shell that
I'd been dropped into that seemed to cause the problem. Also, this
happened during upgrade to kernel version 2.6.27-12, not -11. I figured
the error was similar enough that I'd ride on this particular bug. If I
ought to create a new one instead, please let me know.

Thanks.

[Bug 246099] Re: Screen corruption while scrolling gnome-system-monitor process list

2009-02-16 Thread Spazzy
I concur - this is not fixed. Problem still exists in Intrepid with:

Driver: nvidia 177.82
Hardware: nvidia GeForce 8300 GS

Like the previous post, I don't experience this problem on other nvidia
hardware, namely a GeForce 8400 M and GeForce 8600 GT.

Not sure if this is useful, but the following unrelated performance fix
from http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=115916 seems to
temporarily alleviate the problem:

nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 -a GlyphCache=1
