[Bug 329991] [NEW] Poppler's pdftops does not support multiple-page-size output, use Ghostscript for the CUPS filter instead

2009-02-16 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

See

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19777

and also the discussion on bug 310575.

The pdftops filter of CUPS needs to be built so that it uses
Ghostscript. Ghostscript handles documents with different page sizes
correctly.

Note that CUPS needs ghostscriptadded to BuildDepends and Depends
then.

[Bug 329773] Re: Rythmbox crashes when podcast episode reaches 100%

2009-02-16 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 329747] Re: system hangs during boot, when certain usb devices attached

2009-02-16 Thread Erich
I also tested our hardware with a different test system (an AMD dual core
system)
-- All the errors disappeared!!!

In the attachement, you will find the output of dmesg, when the system
hangs at usbhid: v2.6:USB HID core driver. (I removed the custom
keyboard trackball)

The message hub 2-0:1.0: over-current change on port 7 is resulted by
pressing the power button.

** Description changed:

The problem is that the system hangs *sometimes* during boot up. We
found out that it's somehow related to our usb devices. When the system
hangs, we disconnect the USB HUB (disconnecting a device doesn't change
anything) and the system continues to boot.

  Our System:
  - TYAN S2915 Motherboard
  - 2 Opteron Quad Core CPU's (-- 8 Cores in total)
  - 4GB Memory

  USB HUB with devices:
  - HUB: SMSC USB2507 Chip is used (Bus Powered)
  - port 1: USB DVD drive (High Speed)
  - port 4: USB touch screen (Low Speed)
  - port 6: custom made HID keyboard (using Atmel AT91SAM7S64) (Full Speed)
  - port 7: USB HID Trackball (Low Speed)

What we tried so far (more than 2000 reboots):
  - disabling Legacy USB Support in Bios (-- works but isn't satisfying for
Customer)
- - disconnecting the custom keyboard trackball solves the problem, but we
need them (changing their ports isn't really possible)
+ - disconnecting the custom keyboard trackball changes the problem (other
error message), but disconnecting them isn't an option
  - disconnecting the trackball -- the problem gets less frequent
  - updating the BIOS -- we have the latest version
  - tested different linux kernels:
- 2.6.24-18 (Ubuntu 8.04 after installation)
- 2.6.24-21 (Ubuntu 8.04 after update)
- 2.6.27-7 (Ubuntu 8.10 after installation)
- 2.6.27-11 (Ubuntu 8.10 after update)
- 2.6.28-4 (custom compiled kernel with default configuration)

So when does the system hang? That's not completely clear... the last
displayed line (during boot) changes most of the time:
  - [0.020389] ACPI: Checking initramfs for custom DSDT
  - [0.312865] ..TIMER: vector=0x31 apic1=0 pin1=2 apic2=-1 pin2=-1
  - [1.220292] checking if image is initramfs... it is

I'm not sure any more if it ever hung at this line:
  - [0.732091] Booting processor 5/5 ip 6000

+ After I removed the custom keyboard trackball:
+ - [ 16.894055] usbhid: v2.6:USB HID core driver
+
+
Any suggestions are highly appreciated! THANKS!!!

[Bug 209499] Re: Default window size too large, obscured under top panel

2009-02-16 Thread Celsius
I started having this problem a few days ago (Intrepid - compiz
enabled).

I coincide with an ubuntu upgrade of firefox and the installation of
extension split browser.

uninstalling split browser seems to have solved the problem for now.

I'm not certain if I had the problem before the latest upgrade to
firefox with the extension already installed, but I think it was working
fine.

BTW if it can help anyone that cannot access the menu or resize buttons
: keeping alt pressed while clicking with the mouse anywhere inside
firefox allows you to move the window and place it so as to have access
to the menu/buttons.

[Bug 329994] [NEW] Updates mute sound

2009-02-16 Thread John Smeed
Public bug reported:

Sound updates have for some time caused the master controller in the
mixer to be muted. I think this is a script problem, as sound is just
fine until the next sound update strikes. Proper updates will update the
sound parameter files not replace them. If they must be replaced then do
not mute the sound. The mixer says it is a VIA 8251

2009-02-16 Thread Andreas Olsson
I am not able to reproduce this error. I can still see the prompt and my
input in a screen, while having bash_completion loaded.

Do you have a ~/.screenrc? Made any creative changes to ~/.bashrc,
~/.profile or similar file?

What application to you use to view your terminal session?

By the way, your bash_completion file looks fine. It is exactly the same
as being distributed by a standard Intrepid install.

[Bug 329996] [NEW] suspend only works when connected to AC

2009-02-16 Thread eigenman
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I have an HP Pavillion DV6000 series (DV6607), with an AMD 64, and
NVIDIA chipset, running Ubuntu 8.10. Right now suspend and hibernate
seem to work without much problem when the computer is connected to the
AC adapter. However, when I'm running on battery, the computer fails to
either go to suspend mode, or come out of it.

So, if I suspend while connected to the AC, disconnect the power, and
then open the lid, the power light goes on, but the screen is dark, and
nothing is happening (caps lock and num lock key are non-responsive as
well). However, if I connect to AC at this point, the computer starts
running without a problem. Similarly, if I'm not connected to the AC and
the computer is running, if I try to suspend, the process starts, and
the screen turns black, but the back lighting doesn't turn off, and the
power light continues on staying on (and the battery runs out fairly
quickly as well).

Any suggestion on how I can approach this bug is appreciated.

Cheers,
Eigenman

[Bug 324212] Re: Tomcat 6 does not respect CATALINA_BASE/lib

2009-02-16 Thread Thierry Carrez
I agree that having a /var/lib/tomcat6/lib directory that is just
ignored is very confusing.

However I would not change Tomcat behavior from upstream design and make
it consider two directories when looking for libraries. Not only would
that involve some heavy patch into bootstrap.jar, it would also
introduce a change in how Tomcat usually works.

I'd rather fix the confusion by removing /var/lib/tomcat6/lib and also
the lib subdirectory in instances created by tomcat6-instance-create.

It looks like both glibc and langpack-locales build a 'locales' binary
package, so I'm opening this bug on both until it's clear where the
problem lies.

[Bug 330004] [NEW] Getty fails to respawn

2009-02-16 Thread jgreenso
Public bug reported:

We have a fairly vanilla installation of 8.10 on Intel hardware and use
openvpn to login via ssh usually. However should this fail we use the
console.

On this server we've noticed that after logging out of the console we
are not presented with a new login prompt, but nothing at all. We are
forced to use the next tty available.

More detail can be found here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/59758
Furthermore: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1058964

Clearly whilst this is not a showstopper it does require us to manually
start gettys once logged out which is not correct behaviour.

this open as a reminder to investigate the possibility of automatically
configuring smaller SHM limits in postgresql.conf.

[Bug 214193] Re: Romanian spell-check dictionary uses incorect diacritics

2009-02-16 Thread Alexandru Szasz
Guys, users don't care about versioning, they just need the dictionary
with the most words and the correct writing scheme. There is no sense in
distributing the wrong cedilla version, as you all know there is a law
that says we should use the correct comma version in official writings,
so I see no sense in giving Ubuntu users a headache. The X.org comes
with a comma keymap by default. Readable is not an excuse because if
the user is typing commas he won't be able to search the document.
Usable is more important. As you *need* to install software to view
documents you can install fonts to view documents. Changing a keymap is
not that simple and distributing a spell-checker that marks correct
incorrect writing is very wrong.

So Jani, could you repeat your solution with comma involved ? IMHO it
doesn't matter what versioning scheme you choose to use as long as
you're comitted to maintain the package.

2009-02-16 Thread Michael Lamothe

efficient in that respect. I can cite many other examples of these
improvements if required.

[Bug 327941] Re: [i945] Jaunty and UXA: xorg fails on i945GM (8086:27a2)

2009-02-16 Thread Mirko Pace
It's very hard to replicate issues, furthermore because after the first day of
low-graphic mode the system never asked me more.
Anyway sometimes Kwin seems to crash (screen freeze, go black and reappear
without effects and transparencies). Next time this happen I'll post the Xorg
log.

But now a strange thing happens: before kdm start the screen show me the fine
red/violet checked screen for a second. Login in Kwin work but every minute
screen freeze (although mouse pointer work) and to get it working again I have
to switch to a terminal (ctrl+alt+F1). Otherwise terminal is unusable: it show
me the fine red/violet checked screen.
My Xorg.o.log is in attachment. To describe the fine red/violet checked
screen I've taken a pic, in a few minutes I'll post it.

[Bug 326372] Re: New upstream bug fix releases 8.3.6/8.1.16

2009-02-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package postgresql-8.3 - 8.3.6-0ubuntu8.10

---
postgresql-8.3 (8.3.6-0ubuntu8.10) intrepid-proposed; urgency=low

  * New upstream bug fix release: (LP: #326372)
- Make DISCARD ALL release advisory locks, in addition to
everything it already did. This was decided to be the most
appropriate behavior. This could affect existing applications,
  however.
- Fix whole-index GiST scans to work correctly. This error could
cause rows to be lost if a table is clustered on a GiST index.
- Fix crash of xmlconcat(NULL).
- Fix possible crash in ispell dictionary if high-bit-set characters
are used as flags. This is known to be done by one widely
available Norwegian dictionary, and the same condition may exist
  in others. (Closes: #513580)
- Fix misordering of pg_dump output for composite types. The most
likely problem was for user-defined operator classes to be
dumped after indexes or views that needed them.
- Improve handling of URLs in headline() function.
- Improve handling of overlength headlines in headline() function.
- Prevent possible Assert failure or misconversion if an encoding
conversion is created with the wrong conversion function for the
  specified pair of encodings.
- Fix possible Assert failure if a statement executed in PL/pgSQL is
rewritten into another kind of statement, for example if an
INSERT is rewritten into an UPDATE.
- Ensure that a snapshot is available to datatype input functions.
This primarily affects domains that are declared with CHECK
constraints involving user-defined stable or immutable functions.
Such functions typically fail if no snapshot has been set.
- Make it safer for SPI-using functions to be used within datatype
I/O; in particular, to be used in domain check constraints.
- Avoid unnecessary locking of small tables in VACUUM.
- Fix a problem that sometimes kept ALTER TABLE ENABLE/DISABLE RULE
from being recognized by active sessions.
- Fix a problem that made UPDATE RETURNING tableoid return zero
  instead of the correct OID.
- Allow functions declared as taking ANYARRAY to work on the
  pg_statistic columns of that type.
This used to work, but was unintentionally broken in 8.3.
- Fix planner misestimation of selectivity when transitive equality
is applied to an outer-join clause.
This could result in bad plans for queries like ... from a left
  join b on a.a1 = b.b1 where a.a1 = 42 ...
- Improve optimizer's handling of long IN lists. This change
avoids wasting large amounts of time on such lists when
  constraint exclusion is enabled.
- Prevent synchronous scan during GIN index build. Because GIN is
optimized for inserting tuples in increasing TID order, choosing
to use a synchronous scan could slow the build by a factor of
  three or more.
- Ensure that the contents of a holdable cursor don't depend on the
contents of TOAST tables. Previously, large field values in a
cursor result might be represented as TOAST pointers, which
would fail if the referenced table got dropped before the cursor
is read, or if the large value is deleted and then vacuumed
away. This cannot happen with an ordinary cursor, but it could
with a cursor that is held past its creating transaction.
- Fix memory leak when a set-returning function is terminated without
  reading its whole result.
- Fix encoding conversion problems in XML functions when the database
  encoding isn't UTF-8.
- Fix contrib/dblink's dblink_get_result(text,bool) function.
- Fix possible garbage output from contrib/sslinfo functions.
- Fix incorrect behavior of contrib/tsearch2 compatibility trigger
when it's fired more than once in a command.
- Fix possible mis-signaling in autovacuum.
- Fix ecpg's handling of varchar structs.
- Make all documentation reference pgsql-bugs and/or pgsql-hackers as
appropriate, instead of the now-decommissioned pgsql-ports and
  pgsql-patches mailing lists.

[Bug 326372] Re: New upstream bug fix releases 8.3.6/8.1.16

2009-02-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package postgresql-8.3 - 8.3.6-0ubuntu8.04

---
postgresql-8.3 (8.3.6-0ubuntu8.04) hardy-proposed; urgency=low

[Bug 320875] Re: pulseaudio produces lots of log messages

2009-02-16 Thread Benjamin Drung
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

pulseaudio 0.9.14-0ubuntu1 produces these log messages:

alsa-util.c: Cannot find fallback mixer control PCM or mixer control is no
combination of switch/volume.
alsa-util.c: snd_pcm_avail_update() returned a value that is exceptionally
large: 412788 bytes (780 ms) Most likely this is an ALSA driver bug. Please
report this issue to the PulseAudio developers.

  and thousands of this:

module-alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device, but
there was actually nothing to write! Most likely this is an ALSA driver
bug. Please report this issue to the PulseAudio developers.

+ With pulseaudio 0.9.14-0ubuntu2 the error message changed to:

[Bug 250140] Re: Print settings can't be saved/Only US-letter format

2009-02-16 Thread Alan Lord
Im on Ubuntu Intrepid. All up to date as of today (16/02/09).

For the last couple of releases of Ubuntu, for me the Print option
dialogue settings have not been persistent.

I have to regularly reset my options as they have gone back to the
defaults (I prefer to turn off all the header and footer printing
options and enable printing of background colours and images).

It also fails to recall that fact my printers are all A4 - I'm in the
UK.

What further information would you need to help find a resolution?

In about:config the save print settings is set to true.

I don't know how PPA bugs should be reported. Maybe we need a special

Anyway, any bug report is worth, so, thank you. Which connection manager
are you using to connect to MSN? telepathy-butterfly or telepathy-haze?
You can easily find it by typing ps aux | grep telepathy while you are
connected in Empathy.

This might also help:

Just go to SystemPreferencesAppearance
Click on the Fonts tab and under Rendering, choose Subpixel Smoothing.

Then go to Details, and choose Subpixel Smooting there too, under Smooting.

Without these settings OOo wouldn't show the menu's for me, but now it
does.

There's an easy fix for getting OOo menus to show up while the cube is
enabled along with all other advanced features.

 Just go to SystemPreferencesAppearance
Click on the Fonts tab and under Rendering, choose Subpixel Smoothing.

That's it, your menus should show up perfectly. Unfortunately this
doesn't fix any problems with aMSN. I'm not sure if it fixes the
problems with menus in WINE as I don't have it installed.

when right clicking on a document page is invisible.

The text only appears if you scroll through the menu quickly, but it
disappears once the cursor passes over where the text should be.

[Bug 289463] Re: kvpnc won't disconnect

2009-02-16 Thread pe3k
Actually, if you install kvpnc from their homesite (version 0.9.1), the
disconnect works perfectly ...

I tryied to submit sync-request (see bug 326679), but there seems to be
some problem with sync ...

[Bug 301353] Re: HP Pavilion dv5: ATA exception on resume from suspend

2009-02-16 Thread yachoo
There is still an error on my dv5-1170ew with new F.13A bios. I think
they changed something with wireless only. Before that update, it needed
some time to connect automatically on both Vista and my Ubuntu (I
realised that, when I wanted to flash my bios with vista). Now it
connects immediately. So I guess it's only that fix.

Paul Swanson wrote the following on 02/08/2009 03:30 PM:
I can confirm the F.13 BIOS update HAS NOT fixed the problem on my
dv5-1075er. That would be way too easy now, wouldn't it?

[Bug 303697] Re: [fglrx] video tearing / vsync problems - independent of compiz use

2009-02-16 Thread unggnu
Again, it is NO Compiz issue. It happens all the time, even without
Compiz.

** Summary changed:

- [fglrx] video tearing / vsync problems
+ [fglrx] video tearing / vsync problems - independent of compiz use

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 179042
