[Bug 545891] Re: WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.32/kernel/power/suspend_test.c:53 suspend_test_finish+0x89/0x90()

Hi Iain,

The warning reported here typically indicates that it took longer for
your system to resume from suspend than expected. I believe there is a
5 sec barrier which your system likely exceeded. Typically you'll see
something similar to PM: resume devices took 8.664 seconds in your
dmesg output when this happens. A patch to prevent this warning has
been applied via bug 464552. As a result I'm marking this as a
duplicate to bug 464552. Please continue to track this issue at that
report. Thanks!

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately.]

[Bug 545426] Re: SDL support broken

2010-03-25 Thread Ancoron Luziferis
@Marc: please, let us not think for others. If someone has a reason to
do so it should be completely up to him/her.

I'm using KDE4 currently, and yes, running anything with sudo inside a
terminal does get it displayed on the screen just like expected. Also I
can run the KVM command line directly on the terminal with sudo and SDL
gets set up correctly.

2010-03-25 Thread cgarre
why is the status incomplete .. william clearly states the problem too
and the fix too. Sadly if it is in 2.6.33 we wouldnt get it for lucid,
unless its backported to 2.6.32. i had issues with 2.6.31 due to
brightness problem .. Why is ACPI always in a buggy state .. its sad. So
this means now i have to wait for something after lucid ? cant believe
that , i love ubuntu.

[Bug 494062] Re: i915: KMS disabled when vga16fb is loaded with Lucid Kernel 2.6.32-7.10

2010-03-25 Thread Keng-Yü Lin
The value -1 of /sys/module/i915/parameters/modeset does not mean KMS
disabled. The value zero does.

-1 is just the default value of i915_modeset and with defined
CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS and non-zero i915_modeset, KMS will be enabled.

For the vga16fb, I think it's bug of Plymouth and has been fixed. Please

[Bug 488370] Re: OpenOffice 3.1 Writer corrupted Word file

2010-03-25 Thread Bryan Quigley
I am testing the file in the latest development version of openoffice
and am able to open it. It appears most of the text is missing
unfortunately.. Several pictures and the table of contents are fully
intact.

The official OpenOffice upstram doesn't give the ability to even save as
docx (asks you to save it as something else), so this looks like an
Ubuntu/Go-oo modification.

[Bug 417041] Re: Multiple GUI apps freezing with high I/O wait during typing

2010-03-25 Thread Marcus Herou
I can confirm that Karmic does something fishy, is it ext4 that is the
culprit ?

Issuing a svn up on a large project totally hangs my freshly installed,
newly bought machine but works fine at work on my Hardy installed,
slower machine.

In theory my Home machine should be +- 25% faster with moer graphic mem
etc but in reality is about 5 times slower

I've mounted the working dir as both data=writeback and noatime, no luck
there.

Some figures. The above mentioned svn up gives me 50% iowait and takes a
huge amount of time, the same at work takes at it worst up 10% iowait
and completes in no time.

I have two disks and mounted disk2 as /srv which I use as data-disk and
I have my home-dir there as well. No speedup.

Cheers

//Marcus

Confirming. Problems described in comments #41 and #42 are fixed.

Finally :-) Thanks for testing.

There is a small misguiding interface glitch left: if you have
defaultGroup key set to 0, and you press set defaults in g-k-p,
defaultGroup becomes -1, but corresponding checkbox in g-k-p interface
 is not being updated.

Hm, what is the corresponding checkbox? Can you please file a new
gnome-control-center bug about it?

Thanks,

[Bug 456902] Re: [i845g] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-03-25 Thread Brian Rogers
There are potential fixes for this in the upstream development version. I
uploaded it for Lucid to the following PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/experimental

I can't simply upload this version for Karmic because it requires new
versions of support libraries, but I can backport the important fixes.
If someone can verify this version fixes the bug in Lucid, I'll backport
the changes and we can get them in Karmic.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-03-25 Thread David Ayers
Thanks for the pointer yet it seems not to be an option if someone else
is logged onto their own desktop session and is doing real work which is
the scenario I need to solve. Also it's much to technical for the users
that need this.

I understand the Ubuntu maintainers see their responsibility in
packaging GNOME and not in fixing all bugs/adding features that have not
been implemented upstream and that seems perfectly valid. I would like
to know whether the Ubuntu maintainers do feel responsible to forwarding
bugs reported against supported versions of Ubuntu upstream and
referencing them here.

Anyway these are the reports I found that seem to address part of the issue:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592976

I haven't found a bug report that addresses the fact that gdm cannot be
configured as server anymore.

Note I'm not necessarily stuck on XDMCP. If there is some other
protocol/package with which one could start in independent remote
session in Lucid, I'd be a happy camper.

[Bug 546692] [NEW] Ambiguous file name in warning dialog when adding files

2010-03-25 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

  Candidate: 2.29.91-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 2.29.91-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I'm working with an Apple Mac OSX 10.4 installation CD image. It began
as a .dmg and was converted to .img using dmg2img as per the Ubuntu help
wiki instructions. The .img hfsplus file-system is loop-mounted at
/mnt/hfs/.

When adding all files under /mnt/hfs/ to a new data project Brasero
shows a modal dialog box saying:

Do you really want to add English.lproj to the selection?

The children of this directory will have 7 parent directories.
Brasero can create an image of such a file hierarchy and
burn it; but the disc may not be readable on all operating
 systems.
Note: Such a file hierarchy is known to work on Linux.

The problem here is that English.lproj exists in lots of sub-
directories within the directory-tree being added to the project.
Checking with 'find' shows 210 occurrences:

find /mnt/hfs -name 'English.lproj' 2/dev/null | wc -l
210

The dialog should give the full path to the file as an additional
element in the dialog, so as not to make the headline title harder to
read, but still ensuring the user knows the exact file being reported.

@ Animesh, @ Devil,

If you are on Karmic, Please check this LP #461096 for more details. I
think it's problem with ModemManager.

@ Devil,

Here is the line which causing the issue.

---
Jan 1 07:41:04 devil NetworkManager: WARN stage1_prepare_done(): CDMA modem
connection failed: No service
---

If you are In Lucid Lynx Beta 1, You will get the same problem while
connecting Huawei EC1260 with Reliance NetConnect Broadband+ service.
ModemManager checks for SID / Class / Band. If it will not get those
value it will give No Service error, as given above. In 0.3
ModemManager allows SID=0 in some cases. But, below code is putting
SID=, because of No Band / Class by provider. Please comment below
code in mm-generic-cdma.c, rebuild the package, Now RelianceNetConnect
Broadband+ service will work Huawei EC 1260 Modem, it's also true for
other modems, but not tested, still investigating the issue, but this
hacks works for me.

---
/* Return 'no service' if none of the elements of the +CSS response
 * indicate that the modem has service. Note that this allows SID 0
 * when at least one of the other elements indicates service.
 * Normally we'd treat SID 0 as 'no service' but some modems
 * (Sierra 5725) sometimes return SID 0 even when registered.
 */
//if (sid == 0  !class_ok  !band_ok)

Sometimes dmraid finds metadata when it shouldn't (either because of
previous uses of dmraid, or because of a bug). Have you tried booting

some people need this.

[Bug 476817] Re: [i855] [i855] [karmic] X freezes with intel 855GM videocard

2010-03-25 Thread Brian Rogers
There are potential fixes for this in the upstream development version. I
uploaded it for Lucid to the following PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/experimental

I can't simply upload this version for Karmic because it requires new
versions of support libraries, but I can backport the important fixes.
If someone can verify this version fixes the bug in Lucid, I'll backport
the changes and we can get them in Karmic.

Also, right now this PPA contains a Karmic package that bypasses a
graphical operation that was crashing i845 chips. The side effect is
extremely glitchy graphics, though. It would be useful to know if the
i855 problem is caused by the same operation. So testing on Karmic is
also useful. If the Karmic package prevents the problem, then the
problem is with i830_uxa_solid.

but a lot of hardware have gotten abilities that they inherently had,
but had been disabled.

It would be great if this can be incorporated into the Linux synaptics
driver. People can try enabling these extra features and if their
touchpad does support it - it would be amazing !

[Bug 505100] Re: Open Office Writer crashes often

2010-03-25 Thread Bryan Quigley
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug, unfortunately it is far to
vague to be useful so I am closing it. Many bugs appear to be random but
actually have a pattern behind them. I have several suggestions:
Open a terminal and try rm .openoffice.org/ -rf (this clears your openoffice
settings)
If you are having trouble with specific documents, reopen this report and
attach them
Try running the official OpenOffice.org (from their site) and see if it is any
better

[Bug 546513] Re: Skype need monochrome icons

2010-03-25 Thread Nikola Yanev
I was thinking the same, but to me, it will be possible only when they
make their open-source Linux client. Until then the only way to do that
is to decompile the binary, put the new icons and compile it again, BUT
it will be against their EULA, so just wait for our open-source client.

[Bug 543384] Re: Toolbar confusing for new users

2010-03-25 Thread Martin Pitt
Ah, indeed I mixed up the images wrt. the save button. By all means put
it back, yes!

To put in my 2c about the mode selector, I actually like the
postprocessing option, so that you can scan once, and then quickly
switch between them to see what is more appropriate (you might scan a
document which is mostly text, but has a few embedded graphics in it
which you want to keep as color). But I figure this is a bigger
structural change which might not be suitable for lucid, so a dropdown
menu scan text/scan photo sounds fine. After you used the
application once, you only ever want to use the keyboard shortcuts
anyway, I figure. Like Ctrl+T and Ctrl+P? Or even better, a single key
such as 't' and 'p' or F2 and F3?

[Bug 543177] Re: hybrid usb backend doesn't work with usblp if printer needs to load firmware (HP LJ 1000/1005/1018/1020/P100x/...)

2010-03-25 Thread Till Kamppeter
Kevin, how did you install the firmware on your computer? Did you run
foo2zjs'

sudo getweb 1020

or did you run HPLIP's

sudo hp-plugin (or sudo hp-setup)

Both methods download and install the firmware, but to different places
and different UDEV scripts will be used to load the firmware into the
printer. The HPLIP solution loads the firmware with 3 seconds of delay,
so that any probing by CUPS happens before loading the firmware.
foo2zjs' method loads the firmware immediately and so it comes to
problems.

Run the following commands in a terminal window:

rm /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/*
sudo hp-plugin

Let HP's plugin get installed. Then turn off and turn on the printer, is
it accessible? If not, remove your print queue and let it get auto-
created again by turning off and turning on the printer again.

[Bug 542378] Re: Not reached assertion failed in boredom_timeout

2010-03-25 Thread Simon Kitching
The bug related to eternal waiting for / [SM] appears to be a real
problem then.

The message mountall.c:2726: Not reached assertion failed is
unfortunately not helpful though. I've looked at mountall.c, and that
message is simply because we both pressed ENTER, when the valid
choices were [SM], ie S (skip) or M (maintenance shell). There appears
to be a buglet here: either plymouth_prompt should not be allowing
ENTER, or mountall.c should be handling it. But the message is
unfortunately not telling us anything about why / is not available.

From mountall.c:

message = NIH_MUST (nih_sprintf (NULL, _(Waiting for %s [SM]),
 MOUNT_NAME (mnt)));

answer = plymouth_prompt (NULL, message, SsMm);
if (answer is null or is S or is M) // real code removed for
brevity..

else
nih_assert_not_reached ();   // == the failure message
seen above

[Bug 528926] Re: KDM skips login screen and hangs while trying to load KDE

2010-03-25 Thread alessandro pasotti
@Goh: no, I did'nt install plymouth

@Stèphane: I don't know, but my guess is no. My procedure simply reset KDM
configuration to the default, this let me point my finger to KDM rc files,
there is probably something wrong when you don't do a clean exit from KDE that
messes up the config files.
BTW I did not experience the problem again after the cure

Of course this is just an hypothesis.

I would exclude that the graphic card is involved: I have an Intel G45
on a Dell latitude 4300.

2010-03-25 Thread phjr
What do you suggest then? I'm not sure if it's only my problem, or of
everyone with NVIDIA binary driver. If only mine, any suggestion to fix
this? If not only mine, this should somehow be fixed. I think that there
is currently no full-featured open-source driver for nvidia cards, so
disabling it is not really an option. Perhaps having a straightforward
way to disable the fade-out might be a usable workaround.

[Bug 538479] Re: [Lucid Beta1] hiw-001 Test Picture failed with Acer CrystalEye Webcam 064e:a101

2010-03-25 Thread Reece
Same symptoms here on HP NW8440 laptop with Logitech QuichCam Pro and
Lucid alpha3 and beta1.

The camera works fine upon initial boot. After suspend/resume, behavior
is as described in this bug: camera light illuminates but cheese preview
pane is black. This is repeatable across reboots. I'm not certain that
it occurs on all suspend/resume cycles or that this is the cause.

I've tried replugging and manually unloading/reloading pwc, videodev,

[Bug 546197] Re: Truncated /path/containing spaces error log entry prevents diagnosis of problem

2010-03-25 Thread TJ
I ran the genisoimage command manually and captured the stderr output to
a log file. This reveals that Brasero is truncating the error captured
from STDERR in its own log file, seemingly when the path contained in
the error report includes spaces.

Brasero reported:

BraseroGenisoimage stderr: /usr/bin/genisoimage: No such file or
directory. Non-existent or inaccessible: /mnt/hfs/Read

genisoimage actually reports:

/usr/bin/genisoimage: No such file or directory. Non-existent or
inaccessible: /mnt/hfs/Read Before You
Install.app/Contents/Resources/ko.lproj/설치 전에 읽어보기.pdf

This revealed that the target file in the loop-mounted hfsplus file-
system is problematic.

[Bug 546709] [NEW] libubuntuone forces installation of ubuntuone-client-gnome

2010-03-25 Thread marmuta
Public bug reported:

libubuntuone 0.2.101-0ubuntu2 adds a new depends on ubuntuone-client-
gnome which forces the installation of the client. ubuntu-desktop has
ubuntuone-client-gnome as recommends only, thus it used to be possible

recent change ubuntuone-client-gnome becomes a mandatory install. Please

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2010-03-25 Thread psypher
Please could the severity/importance of this bug be raised. I would
consider a bug which has been prevalent for almost 3 years, which caused
extreme slowdown of the entire desktop when there is any kind of high
disk activity, to be pretty serious. This drastically affect my usage
and productivity of the desktop on a daily basis. Up until this time I
have always thought it's just how linux is and the benefit of all the
other great features outweighs a bit of slow down. Well it seems to be
getting worse and as I start to use even more of the potential of my
PC's I am getting a little tired of it. Recently been testing ubuntuone
extensively and I suspect a big portion of my extremely slow index and
read issues, of the thousands of files I have in my ubuntuone folder, is
actually caused by this bug. Although there are still some improvements
which could be made in that process which the ubuntuone team are
actively working on and doing some great work. There at least someone is
working on big issues but sadly it seems only due to the commercial
potential of ubuntuone.

This seems to be a kernel issue as per this bug report:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12309
But the status of that bug is confusing as it's marked as closed due to
insufficient information.

Does anyone know who is working this? I have attempted to contact the
person assigned as well as Ben Gamari, who I see is subscribed to this
bug on launchpad as well, for some clarification. I will patiently wait
their response. What testing needs to be done and what can be done from
a non-developers perspective to fix this.

IMO this is the worst bug in linux right now and I think a bit more
attention must be brought to it, more than just a slashdot article:
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/01/15/049201

I would not recommend Ubuntu or Linux to any new users until this bug is
fixed. It is embarrassing when trying to praise all the benefits of
using linux to a Windows user when their entire desktop locks up when
trying to do simple things like run a backup or unrar a file.

In the past I have attributed slowness issues in several other
applications as application specific problems. There have been bugs
logged for:

Unison, Firefox, downthemall FF plugin, unrar, ubuntuone, flash, gnome,
VMWare, Virtualbox, qemu and kvm etc etc.

I think all of these issues could be attributed to this one problem.
There are too many apps that experience slowness and grey outs for it
not to be related. this happens between disks or on the same disk,
between disk type like usb, ide or sata. So we must not confuse the
problem. If there is any kind of disk IO the machine freezes. As the bug
above says: Large I/O operations result in slow performance and high
iowait times. That is the problem as far I can tell.

I offer any help required to fix this bug. Just let me know what i need
to do. But please lets raise the importance. This is a critical issue,
not medium.

Thanks guys, keep up the great work, linux still rocks :)

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2010-03-25 Thread Rob Speer
Does an interface freeze really mean that an obvious bug in the
interface has to fester for six more months? Nobody's suggesting
changing what the interface looks like (well, not in *this* bug report),
just how it acts.

This is a *huge* problem in Ambiance now that the resize target is only
a single pixel out of thousands.

[Bug 545871] Re: [lucid] downgrade to stable 2.10

2010-03-25 Thread Martin Pitt
Hello Michael,

thanks for following up. So it seems that at least you do _not_
consider 2.11 an experimental development snapshot which you wouldn't
like to see shipped?

Michael Chudobiak [2010-03-24 13:47 -]:
 1. The import folder is specified in the Preferences button of the
import dialog. Not a bug :-)

Ah, I guess it's a different philosophy now. Until 2.10, gthumb did
(for me, anyway) exactly the right thing and did not try to own my
photos. I create a subfolder for each event and label the directory
accordingly, so that I can copy them around conveniently, have them
browsable on my server, and be able to view them without the help of a
separate database file. F-Spot and Shotwell fail utterly in that
regard, since they stash away imported photos in an unmanageable
internal hierarchy. Thus for me the destination directory isn't a
preference, but something that I set each time I import photos.

But I guess its a design decision how gthumb should treat photo
folders and import. But of course it's your prerogative how to handle
that. I guess I can resort back to dragdrop in nautilus, and do not
use a photo manager at all then.

 2. Camera off - not sure about that. Please file a bug upstream.

Done, https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=613875

 3. Multiple select - https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=610419.
I'm not sure if/how that will be resolved.

 4. Drag to folders - not implemented yet - should be -
 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=593431

Thanks for the references.

 5. Re-enable thumbnails - fixed in git, will be in 2.11.2.1.

Wrt. thumbnails I also found that the import dialog does not have any
thumbnails at all. That's a pretty big showstopper, since you have no
way to select which pictures you are interested in. Filed as

  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=613876

Anyway, I'm not sure what criteria Ubuntu uses for LTS packages, but
do keep in mind that 2.10.x is totally dead upstream and no fixes
are being released. 2.11.x is being actively developed and
 maintained. Just so you know.

Thanks. It's not a trivial decision indeed, but it seems to me that
2.11 still needs some time to bake until it caught up with 2.10's
stability and workflow. (While I was collecting debug info for the
two bugs I just filed I had gthumb crash on me, too :( ).

2.10 was rock solid and just worked. I was told that the gvfs-umount
call was broken, but fixing that should be trivial.

Thank you!

Martin
