[Bug 665805] [NEW] useless package failure text, even with Details
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kpackagekit KPackageKit 0.6.2, 64-bit Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick, KDE 4.5.1 Using KPackageKit I installed one or more packages including at least alsa-tools, and at Installing 37% the following error dialog appeared: Package failed to install - KPackageKit One of the selected packages failed to install correctly. More information is available in the detailed report Details subpocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 This isn't at all helpful. *Which* package failed to install? *What* post-installation script was running? Surely if code is able to detect the error exit status then it should know what package it is installing and what it has invoked! All this tells me is something somewhere went wrong some way. I looked in /var/log/dpkg.log and it ends with 2010-10-23 18:00:33 status half-configured alsa-tools 1.0.23-3ubuntu1 2010-10-23 18:00:33 status installed alsa-tools 1.0.23-3ubuntu1 does that mean alsa-tools failed to install? But after I dismissed the alert, KPackageKit redisplayed and showed it had installed alsa-tools. So maybe the package failed to install is wrong, or it's some minor error like rebuilding man pages or font cache. KPackageKit's uninformative alert makes it hard to tell or troubleshoot. ** Affects: kpackagekit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- useless package failure text, even with Details https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665805 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 327428] Re: mouse pointer no longer has 1 pixel precision
OK, now it's getting absurd. It *still* hasn't been fixed in Maverick. Fortunately, the same patch works in the Maverick version as it does in the Lucid one, but come on - this problem has an identified cause, a known temporary solution (which does correct the problem, it's not just a workaround)... how has it not been addressed in the official version yet? If the problem is in identifying when the correction needs to work, can't a simple file be introduced that allows users to set the appropriate values, should they find that the defaults not be acceptable? Just a config file that, if absent, leaves everything at defaults? ** Tags added: maverick -- mouse pointer no longer has 1 pixel precision https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/327428 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 665806] [NEW] false battery alarm with realtime app running (jackd)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager When I have the JACK daemon running with realtime priority on this MSI Wind U100 laptop and pull out the wall power, the system tells me that the battery is low and enters hibernation. The battery is full, though. If JACK is not active, nothing happens (just the battery symbol goes gray, which is irritating, but intended, I guess). This forced hibernation is particulary annoying as JACK really does not like going to sleep; it cannot be killed by an ordinary user after resume (meaning: stop it via the button in qjackctl); pkill -9 jackd is needed. But that's another bug in the JACK audio server that one could live with, wouldn't the system -- and I suspect it's called gnome-power- manager here -- force a suspend to disk. I'll check again if it's really just an issue when JACK has realtime priority, after posting this initial report (don't wanna loose it as collateral damage). Even if it is, I suspect some nasty race condition that could occur any time, but is helped by the scheduling schism introduced by JACK. [Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around
I have the same issue in Meerkat (2.6.35-22-server, x86_64). Confirming that it worked (i.e. did not have the issue) in Lucid. Same computer. Same hardware. Same architecture (x86_64). Only change done was a 'clean install' from Lucid to Meerkat with all updates and upgrades that it asked for. Also confirming that this bug remains no matter how long the laptop is ON. 4 hrs - 6 hours, may be more (i.e. it does not go away in 10 min as some threads suggest). Also this remains the same whether it is a clean startup (from power-down) or a wakeup from a suspended state. Guys, pls. don't mark this (or similar bugs) as invalid. That will be the biggest disservice to the loyal users of Ubuntu Linux. I understand and respect that some of you guys (developers testers) might not be able to see/reproduce the problem. That's OK. But pls. don't disrespect fellow users and community members by saying/marking them as invalid. (I saw in some threads, that's why I persistently request). Snapshot attached. [Bug 657900] Re: mount.cifs: permission denied: no match for /home/myuser/mydir/myshare found in /etc/fstab
Same for me. All these changes made to mount.cifs behavior over the distro upgrades are starting to be very annoying. I understand that this is for security reasons, but if a root user wants to allow a non-user to do something, it should not be rejected, only warned !!! If the system decisions overcome root user's ones, then what's the use of being root ?? Sory for being rude, I just need a simple way of mounting a share for a non-root user. I found the solution with mount.cifs, then we had to use sudo chmod +s /sbin/mount.cifs to allow a non-user (though we had to run the command after each samba update), and now it seems to be simply not possible anymore !! How can we retrieve the old behavior ? Is there a workaround ? I am a bit upset actually but I ensure that I admire all the people working on the open source community. [Bug 665806] Re: false battery alarm with realtime app running (jackd)
OK, scrap the thing about JACK. It must have been luck before, but now I was able to get the forced hibernation without jackd running at all. The rather infurinating thing is that I get dialog that tells about the fact and offers OK and Cancel buttons... which have no effect on the action being taken. It might be nice if Cancel being pressed withing some time frame would cancel the hibernation process. I even triggered multiple hibernations in a row (unplug, plug, unplug). Causing the laptop to go to sleep again right after waking up. Anyhow: When unplugging from wall power, I get this notification blended onto the desktop about battery state ... and it tells me about 0:02 of battery runtime, 99% .. which somewhat contradicts the information when clicking on the battery applet, there I get 99%, OK, but also the much more sensible estimated runtime of 1:59 or so. Still, this seems to be a timing issue, perhaps the ACPI information doesn't change atomically, or there is just an error in the runtime calculation using an outdated value of whatnot. I suspect, that this might be worked around by waiting some seconds and then recomputing the remaining runtime -- and only triggering the emergency if the situation is confirmed. I do wonder though, if nobody else can reproduce this. Is the MSI Wind U100 BIOS just broken? I'm remined of the strange issues with the webcam and USB, or the Bluetooth/WLAN switch not working correctly by chance (gladly, it works in the Maverick install, as opposed to the live system from USB). -- false battery alarm with realtime app running (jackd) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665806 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 665806] Re: false battery alarm with realtime app running (jackd)
Oh, and I see this issue as rather more serious on observing that I cannot turn off this behaviour. I can only choose between shutdown/standby/hibernate. Nothing like nothing or inform/ask user. Especially since this is not my machine ... so I have to instruct the user to only unplug the wall power when the machine is not running. -- false battery alarm with realtime app running (jackd) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665806 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

About the same problem here. Same messages in the logs; however, nothing logged when gdm crashes. Which happens after some minutes of inactivity or reliably after waking my Thinkpad from suspend. This bug seems pretty severe to me. I had a look at the X11vnc package Chele suggested, but it isn't installed in the first place. BTW, i use a self- compiled kernel 2.6.36, problem was the same with a prior version and a ubuntu kernel. I'll do a dpkg-reconfigure gdm and report any results. [Bug 665751] Re: Pulseaudio is not running (second sound card without sound)
I've had similar problems in *Kubuntu* between my Audigy 2 sound card and built-in VIA 8327 audio chip. To troubleshoot them I tried playing sounds at each level of the Linux audio stack. It helps to have speakers connected to every possible output. ALSA: Use `aplay -L` to get a list of your output devices, and try playing through them, e.g. for me `aplay -vv -D front:CARD=Audigy2,DEV=0 /usr/share/sounds/SOME_WAVE_FILE.wav` plays on my Audigy2 card. Use `alsamixer` to see if anything's muted. More tips in http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/TroubleShooting PULSEAUDIO: Use `pacmd list-sinks` to get a list of your output devices, look for name: xxx, and then try playing through them, e.g. for me `paplay -d alsa_output.pci-_00_11.5.analog-stereo -v /usr/share/sounds/SOME_WAVE_FILE.wav` plays on my Audigy2 card. I can't help you with the higher levels of gnome, my understanding is there are tools like pavu and pavucontrol... I found PulseAudio preferred my Audigy 2 over my built-in VIA 8237, but I wanted the latter (I get screeching noises through my Audigy 2 output if there's any network activity). It turns out PA had decided to mute the built-in audio chip and sometimes this doesn't show up in the KDE mixer control. If that's your problem, look for muted: yes in the output of `pacmd list-sinks`. Once you've figured out the problem there are ways to get the audio layers to do the right thing ranging from (roughly) `asoundconf set-default-card Audigy2` in a .asoundrc file to `set-default-sink` in default.pa file, to messing with udev rules. Instead I just manually go in to the KMix GUI and unmute and choose a preferred device. I hope this helps, good luck! -- Pulseaudio is not running (second sound card without sound) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665751 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 637339] Re: After upgrading to Ub 10.10, no /dev/mixer!
forgive me ... i am a little bit wrong here. after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 i had these mixer problems so i tried to downgrade back to 10.04. but i make many mistakes. since i am new to linux and not beeing very familar with it in detail, i decided to try out debian which uses kernel 2.6.26-X-686 and found same mixer problems there. my idea was that my modprobe idea could also be helpful on kernel shipped with ubuntu, even if i didn't install ubuntu again to test it. elsewhere i can read that ubuntu developers removed different sound- things from current kernel. many users had tears in their eyes as i can see from results in search engines. -- After upgrading to Ub 10.10, no /dev/mixer! https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/637339 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 585564] Re: Xephyr keyboard layout broken
I have the same problem (pressing the up key starts the screenshot utility) when using gnome-session inside Xephyr (I'm using Xephyr for multiseat configuration). Keyboard Layout: Germany - eliminate dead keys Xephyr command-line: Xephyr :5 -ac -screen 1280x1024 -mouse evdev,,device=/dev/input/by-id/usb-04d9_0499-event-mouse -keybd evdev,,device=/dev/input/by-id/usb-Logitech_Logitech_USB_Keyboard-event-kbd,xkbrules=xorg,xkbmodel=evdev,xkblayout=de,xkbvariant=nodeadkeys,xkboptions=lv3:ralt_switch,compose:caps -dpi 100 When using the icewm window manager in Xephyr, all keys are ok (including the arrow keys). The bug seems to be somehow related to one component used in the gnome environment. With the following procedure I sometimes the arrow keys to work with gnome-session: 1. start Xephyr (using second keyboard/mouse than the main X-server). No window manager or other program is started yet in Xephyr. 2. Press the up-key several times on the second keyboard (used by Xephyr) 3. wait some seconds (5 to 10) 4. start gnome-session in Xephyr -- up-key works normally -- Xephyr keyboard layout broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585564 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 498933] Re: Crash when restoring data KeyError
Hi, I am also experiencing the same error. I did a full backup (encryped) and wanted to check a restore today. I chose a different directory just to see if the restored files would match the last incremental backup that happened today. /home/jorg is the home dir that is backed up, Downloads, temp, Trash and Podcasts are not backed up, and I backed up to /home/jorg/backup-test The backup destination is FTP, I used a gnome bookmark to backup the files to (which is basically the folder Backup on the FTP server). The stack trace I get is; Traceback (most recent call last): File /usr/bin/duplicity, line 1257, in module with_tempdir(main) File /usr/bin/duplicity, line 1250, in with_tempdir fn() File /usr/bin/duplicity, line 1204, in main restore(col_stats) File /usr/bin/duplicity, line 539, in restore restore_get_patched_rop_iter(col_stats)): File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/duplicity/patchdir.py, line 522, in Write_ROPaths ITR( ropath.index, ropath ) File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/duplicity/lazy.py, line 335, in __call__ last_branch.fast_process, args) File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/duplicity/robust.py, line 37, in check_common_error return function(*args) File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/duplicity/patchdir.py, line 575, in fast_process ropath.copy( self.base_path.new_index( index ) ) File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/duplicity/path.py, line 416, in copy other.writefileobj(self.open(rb)) File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/duplicity/path.py, line 591, in writefileobj buf = fin.read(_copy_blocksize) File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/duplicity/patchdir.py, line 200, in read if not self.addtobuffer(): File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/duplicity/patchdir.py, line 225, in addtobuffer self.tarinfo_list[0] = self.tar_iter.next() File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/duplicity/patchdir.py, line 332, in next self.set_tarfile() File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/duplicity/patchdir.py, line 321, in set_tarfile self.current_fp = self.fileobj_iter.next() File /usr/bin/duplicity, line 575, in get_fileobj_iter backup_set.volume_name_dict[vol_num], KeyError: 3 -- Crash when restoring data KeyError https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/498933 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 255228] Re: Disabling the suspend and hibernate locks via gconf-editor doesn't do anything (from Intrepid to lucid included)
I'm still suffering this in maverick. If use 'Indicator Applet Session': Resuming always get locked no matter what changes in gconf-editor /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/ were made If use 'Shut Down...', laptop lid, keyboard's sleep key, etc.: Works as expected following the settings in gconf-editor /apps/gnome-power- manager/lock/ -- Disabling the suspend and hibernate locks via gconf-editor doesn't do anything (from Intrepid to lucid included) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/255228 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
