Re: [Bug 668602] Re: Update manager does not works as needed

2010-10-29 Thread Emil Kesler
Thanks for your swift reaction.
I'll answer your question a bit later, cause right now I'm far from the
computer
with the Ubunto installation that showed the bug. Now only I can say, that I
made exactly the actions described in the "Help" provided - by the menu. It's
needed to say, that before the later, I made the overall uptating through the
command-line "sudo". This operation was recomended by some site, which I found
after a failed trial to install the packages java-sdk, eclipse, netbeans and
anjuta. I did that cause all my attempts to install these packages from the
corresponding links in the "Help" inadvertadly produced the error-dialog,
something like "the package not found". More details - later.
Truly,
Emil.

Dell dimension 2100 platform. After install of 10.10 desktop, system constantly
cycles between login screen and desktop after password entry.

Automatic login option was selected during install process yet system requires
login.

Display ocassionally gives a different background but system actions remain the
same.
Redownloaded 10.10, burned ISO onto a different CD, reinstalled -- same results.
Boots from either 10.10 CD fine. Runs install with no problems. After CD
removed and booting from HD, problems.
System has run flawlessly on versions 8.04 and 9.10 previously.

[Bug 358654] Re: udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured

2010-10-29 Thread Andy_vso
I have just encountered this problem too.
I am running Kubuntu 10.04 on VMWare Player 3.1.2 on a Windows XP Pro machine.
Kubuntu performed the updates and then I got the udevadm trigger... report.
I am facing issues with the various suggestions here and elsewhere though.
After the udevadm trigger message it drops to the initramfs command line
ls /boot simply says no such directory
I have the kubuntu iso mounted within the VMWare player however, when rebooting
the Kubuntu VM, there is no repsonse to the F2 or ESC key so it passes straight
through to the udevadm trigger message everytime (the VMWare restart screen
does appear for a second or so with the message at the bottom re F2 for SETUP,
F12 etc. ESC for Boot Menu).
I'm a little stuck as to ideas as I'd rather not lose that Kubuntu VM setup.

Cheers
Andy

[Bug 575394] Re: Gwibber does not create a Notification bubble when posting status's and comments on Facebook

2010-10-29 Thread Omer Akram
this bug is actually not a bug and a feature request about gwibber to
show a notification when we post something on a facebook. i think the
proposed branch was mistakenly linked to this bug. since i have not seen
any regressions in the proposed version of gwibber I am marking this as
verified.

[Bug 668628] [NEW] Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook installs from USB DVD but won't boot

2010-10-29 Thread Brad Stone
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

System: Dell Inspiron 910 previously running Netbook Remix 9.10 with no
issues. Used USB DVD drive to install 10.10 from ISO.

Issue: Ran a clean install (told installer to erase drive) of 10.10. No
issues noted during install, reached end of install process and received
the "need to reboot" message. Upon restart, the Dell splash screen
appeared but then the screen went blank with a blinking cursor. Removing
/ including the USB DVD did not resolve. Fix was to manually reinstall
Grub from the live disc.

See
https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+question/129713

[Bug 601986] Re: Disk driver problems on Toshiba NB305Netbook

2010-10-29 Thread Brandon Low
Jim: I'm doing pretty well with nohz=off nohpet highres=off.

hdparm -tT /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 1554 MB in 2.00 seconds = 777.62 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 570 MB in 3.01 seconds = 189.63 MB/sec

Suspend to RAM works properly, but suspend to disk does not, but that's
good enough for me.

Still would like some kind of real resolution to the underlying bug.

[Bug 663642] Re: DVI doesn't work at BeagleBoard xM rev A3

2010-10-29 Thread andyf
I was able to run Ubuntu 10.10 on my Beagleboard-xM A3 (following the
instructions from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/OMAPMaverickInstall).
However, it was slow. I checked the /proc/cpuinfo and found out the
Bogomips was less than 600.

Then I rebooted the BB-xM with the original Angstrom SD card. Checked
the /proc/cpuinfo and the Bogomips was 999.xx.

Was there anything I did wrong to install Ubuntu 10.10? Please advise!
Thanks

[Bug 574432] Re: Lirc unable to initialise IR portion of Mplay Blast VFD (Zalman HD-135 case)

2010-10-29 Thread Jonathan Brown
I've found a workaround. At least it works for me and I honestly don't
know why it does. As mentioned in the description it says that the only
way to initialize the IR portion is by booting up a Windows VM and doing
it from there. I've found; however, that all I have to do to get it
working after booting up is to enter "screen /dev/ttyUSB0 9600" in the
terminal. It will fail to open up a screen to the device but it appears
to wake it up such that IR, as well as the VFD on the HD135 case, starts
working. The 9600 part may be incorrect but it doesn't seem to matter as
long as it wakes it up.

Taking this a step further I edited the /etc/rc.local file and added the
"screen /dev/ttyUSB0 9600" line there so that it "initializes" it upon
boot up.

[Bug 601986] Re: Disk driver problems on Toshiba NB305Netbook

2010-10-29 Thread jim_charlton
Three weeks after upgrading to Ubuntu Maverick (10.10,
2.6.35-22-generic) I still can't find a configuration where the Toshiba
NB305 Netbook will boot and run reliably with either the "compatibility"
or "AHCI" disk setting in the BIOS.

I have resorted to booting the machine on the 2.6.32-26-generic kernel
with the disk "compatibility" mode... despite the fact that I have all
of the maverick packages loaded. Strangely enough... this seems to work
just fine. The machine boots and runs without any hesitation. It even
hibernates and resumes OK as long as I still boot on the older kernel.

gksu gedit /etc/default/grub

and edit the following line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

into:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor"

[Bug 575465] Re: unable to use mouse buttons to trigger events in mangler

2010-10-29 Thread ekilfoil
I spoke with the Xorg devs on IRC and this patch has been set for pull
request in upstream's master git. However, Ubuntu needs to backport
this to 10.10 and update. I do not plan on maintaining a PPA for this
fix now that upstream has corrected the problem. This bugfix consists
of moving two lines of code. The patch attached above is identical for
the current version of Xorg.

[Bug 666910] Re: Can not install addons

2010-10-29 Thread RedSingularity
Ok no problem. If you booted the live cd and there was still a problem
obviously something is wrong with the router or the OS itself. I doubt
the router anyway since you can use windows on it with no problem. As
for the OS though there may be a defect in the disk itself. Can you get
your hands on another version of ubuntu or try burning another 10.10 on
a blank CD if you have one. If you download 10.10 again download it
from the official Ubuntu site. (You may have done that from the start
but try burning a fresh one anyway.)

[Bug 668297] extragear/sysadmin/libqapt/src

2010-10-29 Thread Jonathan Thomas
SVN commit 1191219 by jmthomas:

Use libapt-pkg's pkgCacheFile for a bunch of cache-related stuff inside
QApt::Cache, rather than rolling our own. This results in the nice loss of 51

The class will stay due to the trustCache stuff it implements (and obviously
binary/API compatibility) Whenever the need arises for a QApt2 (API break) this
will likely become a thin(er) wrapper over the pkgCacheFile, with its main
objective being to provide a Qt-style API. (Hopefully a trustCache solution
will make it in to APT in the meanwhile, so that we and synaptic don't have to
have two imlementations)

But, in the meantime, less stuff to maintain/worry about breaking. :)

[Bug 668616] [NEW] filetype not properly registered

2010-10-29 Thread Jason Rohwedder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: clamz

It seems like the mime type for this file isn't being properly registered for
some reason.

j...@geist:~$ XDG_UTILS_DEBUG_LEVEL=100 xdg-mime query filetype
~/Downloads/AmazonMP3-1288404256.amz
Running file -i "/home/jro/Downloads/AmazonMP3-1288404256.amz"
text/plain; charset=us-ascii

So as you might expect the browser opens up gedit rather than
downloading the file via clamz. I tried adding the mime type manually
to no avail.

j...@geist:~$ xdg-mime install --novendor /usr/share/mime/packages/clamz.xml
(complains if I don't use --novendor

Re: [Bug 666910] Re: Can not install addons

2010-10-29 Thread Dan Koga
I could not download when booting from live CD either.

I am temporarily staying with friends and the router does not belong to me.
Don't know how they would feel about a hard reset on the router.

[Bug 668615] [NEW] Downloads slow, stop, get stuck on "starting up"

2010-10-29 Thread topdownjimmy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: miro

Encountered this problem in both Miro 3.0.3 and 3.5, under Ubuntu
Maverick.

Under Lucid, everything was working fine. Now, downloads begin, pick up
speed, then start to slow until they're at a couple bytes per second,
before finally stalling at "starting up" and no further progress is
made.

I have adequate disk space; my firewall is turned off; ports are
forwarded; and the same torrent works in Transmission.

I uninstalled Miro, deleted my ~/.miro directory, reinstalled, and
encountered the same problem.

2010-10-29 Thread RedSingularity
This is very odd indeed. And you couldn't download on a live cd either

If it doesn't have a negative effect on other computers in your area,
could you perform a "hard reset" on your wireless router then try again?
The hard reset will set it back to factory defaults.

[Bug 668152] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 won't boot after updates

2010-10-29 Thread Eric Houston
After days of uptime during which I installed several updates, I shut
the system down, which it did fine. The next morning I attempted to
boot and have not been able to since (this was four or five days ago).

After choosing the kernel (any kernel), a great deal of trace
information appears on the screen. I wish I had a way to capture it.
This is what I transcribed by hand at the very end of the trace:

6.657817 sd 7:0:0:0 Attached scsi generic sg6 type 0
6.658041 sd 7:0:0:1 Attached scsi generic sg7 type 0
6.657817 sd 7:0:0:2 Attached scsi generic sg8 type 0
6.657817 sd 7:0:0:3 Attached scsi generic sg9 type 0
6.726048 sd 7:0:0:0 [sde] Attached scsi removable disk
6.726048 sd 7:0:0:1 [sdf] Attached scsi removable disk
6.726048 sd 7:0:0:2 [sdg] Attached scsi removable disk
6.726048 sd 7:0:0:3 [sdh] Attached scsi removable disk

But I think all that is immaterial. Earlier in the trace it says
something like "Attempting to mount /dev as boot - device not found",
but I don't have the exact verbiage. That sounds a lot more suspect. I
sure would like to know why I can't load Ubuntu from CD...

Is there a way for me to single step the GRUB loader or otherwise add
instrumentation?

Thank you Philip!

sudo apt-get autoremove update-manager

[Bug 660655] Re: time command doesnt recognize it's own arguments

2010-10-29 Thread Kage Jittai
Yes this is the issue. Doing:

alias time=/usr/bin/time

Will override bash's default time and use the binary...

Could be added to the default profile or something?

[Bug 574886] Re: Apt has strange network errors when updating indexes.

2010-10-29 Thread Austin Jones
I have recently installed 10.10 Desktop on my netbook, which has had
this exact problem before on the past 4 versions of Ubuntu. I am
disappointed to see that after 4 entire versions this problem still has
not been fixed. Ubuntu team, please focus on bugs, then do features.

[Bug 479944] Re: import of text file fails

2010-10-29 Thread ~suv
> The workaround is to delete the following line from the file txt2svg.inx:
  txt2svg.pl
> With the new inx file the .txt extension appears just below the sk1 extension.

In Inkscape 0.48 and 0.48+devel r9862 on OS X 10.5.8 I do see both file
types listed in the 'File open' dialog _without_ changing any line of
the extension definition files (outline2svg.inx, txt2svg.inx). (Yes, I
removed the user extensions directory before testing, and checked the
shared extensions directory for duplicate file types).
