[Bug 869502] Re: Kernel-Panic with 3.0.0.12-generic on asus eee pcs and msi wind (both using rt2800 wifi chipset)

2011-11-21 Thread Kristian Benoit
Same problem here on a eeepc 1015, the device is RT3090. I downloaded
the driver for 3090 from ralink web site and it works fine. I thought I
should mention that since everyone seems to have the problem with
rt2860.

Output of lspci -k :
Network controller: Ralink corp. RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe
Subsystem: AzureWave Device 1087
Kernel driver in use: rt2860
Kernel modules: rt3090sta, rt2800pci

Output of lsmod | grep ^rt.*
rt3090sta 857317 1

I guess the kernel driver in use is the firmware in use. Under
/lib/firmware, there are firmwares for rt2860 and rt3090. Since they
have the same md5, I guess it does not mather, but seems weird it's
using rt2860.

Re: [Bug 892554] Re: SSH keys summary does not report ECDSA key

2011-11-21 Thread Scott Moser
What's the best way to add a known_hosts entry from these fingerprints?
Maybe the -e option should be used instead of -l ?

I don't think there is enough information to create an ssh known_hosts
entry from the fingerprint. I've written a blog post at
http://ubuntu-smoser.blogspot.com/2010/07/verify-ssh-keys-on-ec2-instances.html
demonstrating how to check the host before connecting.

I think the original intent of this feature (before my time) was to serve
humans verifying the remote host, thus the fingerprint makes sense.

However, it seems that it would make sense to support outputting something
more machine consumable, which the 'ssh -e' would be better for.

I'm open to adding a cloud-config option for this. Care to open a bug?

Unfortunately, I don't think we can reasonably ditch the old default
behavior as many tools have been written to scrape console output looking
for this formated string.

[Bug 893207] Re: package upower 0.9.1-1 failed to install/upgrade: cannot access archive: No such file or directory

2011-11-21 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory
corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a
memory test. Thanks in advance!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 893285]

2011-11-21 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/893285/+editstatus and add the

[Bug 881826] Re: [Analog Devices AD1988B, Green Headphone Out, Front] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2011-11-21 Thread DarkRedman
I'm on Ubuntu 11.10 and that's not related to any profile selection I
can't select profile anyway there's alway one output.

I update my Ubuntu everyday and there's no new update about alsa at the
moment.

And this is at least relates to the alsa process which is frozen. It
happends since three days. It happened before with another kernel but I
got back to a standard kernel. And the errors finally occurs again.

If more information are needed to explore the problem, ask me.

But actually it's all I know about the problem.

[Bug 893256] Re: package fuse-utils 2.8.4-1ubuntu1.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-11-21 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The version of update-initramfs that you likely have
installed is unable to work on a persistent usb stick. You can resolve
this issue by upgrading the version of casper on your system. This can
be done via the commands:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install casper

Then performing the software update or installation that you were
originally trying. If this does not resolve your bug please set its
status back to New. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 893302] [NEW] friendly-recovery depends on /usr/bin/whiptail, and will fail if /usr on a different filesystem

2011-11-21 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

I was trying to zero in a problem on Precise, Linux 3.2, and -- perhaps
-- encrypted LVM. So I booted, under the 3.2 kernel, into recovery --
and was greeted by a message stating

Couldn't find whiptail, starting root shell instead of recovery menu.

Indeed, at this point in time my /usr has not, yet, been mounted.

End result: friendly-recovery is not available is /usr is a different
filesystem.

[Bug 893292] [NEW] Linux-3.0.0-13 upgrade breaks networking + simple temporary fix

2011-11-21 Thread David Favor
Public bug reported:

Upgrading Ubuntu-11.10 from kernel-3.0.0-12 to kernel-3.0.0-13 breaks
networking, rendering machines unbootable.

Problem is missing /run/network directory reported when
'/etc/init.d/networking restart' is run manually.

Multiple problems...

1) /etc/init/networking.conf creates /var/run/network instead of
/run/network

2) /run/network never populated

Fix seems to be changing /etc/init/networking.conf as follows:

1) change mkdir -p /var/run/network to /run/network

2) exec /etc/network/if-up.d/upstart to populate /run/network

/etc/network/if-up.d/upstart is what's called in /etc/init.d/networking to
populate /run/network,
so that's what's used in this fix. There may be a more correct way to do this.

This doesn't work though, as it appears tmpfs gets mounted over
/run/network after networking.conf runs.

For now, adding the following big, ugly, simple hack to /etc/rc.local

mkdir -p /run/network /etc/init.d/networking restart

2011-11-21 Thread André Carvalho
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric running-unity

** Description changed:

When booting, the system hangs and not even REISUB-ing works, making a
force shutdown the only way to turn off the laptop.

The problem seems to be an address space collision:
[0.282266] pci: :00:09.0: address space collision: [mem
0x7800-0x78ff] conflicts with reserved [mem 0x-0x]

(No logs available for this boot, apparently, so it had to be written by
  hand)

  1) I am currently running Oneiric, but the problem started on Lucid;
  2) I am currently running 2.6.31-23-generic-pae (Karmic).

Additional testing from other distributions (and Ubuntu itself):
  1) Debian-testing kernels boot, but the nVidia drivers fail to compile for it
(meaning X doesn't work);
  2) Fedora 14 works fine, but 15 had some problems (it still booted);
  3) ANY x86 Ubuntu derivative fails to boot if it was based on Lucid or later;
  4) openSUSE works fine;
  5) Any x64 package of the Kernel in Ubuntu works, but has wi-fi and sound
problems (ndiswrapper is not an alternative since it crashes the kernel);
  6) The problem starts on 2.6.32-2.2 x86 and is still replicable on today's
builds of the Kernel on Ubuntu.
  7) Karmic and older versions have no problems.

[Bug 893222] Re: External Monitors do not work on Ivybridge in Oneiric.

2011-11-21 Thread Robert Hooker
** Description changed:

+ == Oneiric SRU Justification ==
+
+ [Impact]
+ This wil affect all users of Ivybridge whom use multiple monitors on Oneiric
when it releases.
+
+ [Justification]
+ Patch 1 in this series fixes cursor support on external monitors on
Ivybridge.
+ Patch 2 corrects multimonitor bringup. Both only affect ivybridge generation
+ GPUs and have no chance of regressing other generations. Both commits are
+ upstream and have been tested internally on 5 different Ivybridge machines to
+ be sure of correct functionality. They are clean cherry-picks into Oneiric
+ if that is an easier way of applying.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Boot the system or hotplug an external monitor. It should work. It doesn't
before these changes.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ None, the changes are contained to Ivybridge only which are unreleased, and
external monitors were not supported previously.
+
+
(paste from another bug on this issue)
Title: Video is not displayed on external display correctly

Summary: Lost desktop control after conecting system to external
display. When first connected to the external display, onboard display
disappears and only mouse pointer is seen, and red screen on the
external monitor. Pressing Fn + F8 to switch different video out modes
doesn't get the desktop back. It's either mouse pointer on the external
display or on the onboard display. I have to hard power off the system
  to restore.

  Steps:
  1. Install Ubuntu 11.10
  2. Connect the system to an external display via VGA or HDMI
  3. Press Fn + F8 to switch between different video out mode

  Expected results:
First Fn+F8, video signal is mirrored
Second Fn+F8, video signal is extended
Third Fn+F8, video signal is displayed on external monitor only
Fourth Fn+F8, video signal is returned to onboard display

  Actual results:
First Fn+F8, onboard desktop disappeared and only mouse pointer is shown.
Second Fn+F8, red screen is shown on external monitor
Third Fn+F8, only mouse pointer is shown on external monitor
Fourh Fn+F8, only mouse pointer is shown on onboard display

[Bug 892494] Re: Unity-2D doesn't work with Hebrew

2011-11-21 Thread Gerry Boland
Hi Ilan,
I'm sorry, I messed up the copy paste. Try this:

gconftool-2 --set --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager
false

needed space between 'boo' and '/apps...'. You can reset your desktop
to usual by switching the false to true.

A single monitor of width 3600. Hmmm. I would be very interested to see what
happens with the above command.
Thanks for you help so far!

[Bug 500073] Re: [Lucid] Brasero cannot create dvd video or create image

2011-11-21 Thread Shane Synan
This bug bit me on a fully updated Ubuntu 10.04 system when trying to
copy a CD, failing with the exact same error message. However, I found
a fix.

According to http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9754437postcount=3,
I installed the package icedax and it worked without even having to
reboot.

From a terminal:
sudo apt-get install icedax

Should the dependencies of Brasero be updated to include this package?

[Bug 891816] Re: Moving or copying text with the mouse yields a segfault

2011-11-21 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 893259]

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/893259/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 893310] [NEW] geoclue: will fail to build against gpsd 3.3

2011-11-21 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
Public bug reported:

As the freedesktop.org upstream is kinda dead, but geoclue seems to be
ina bit of development in Ubuntu I'm filing the bug here, too.

gpsd 3.3 (currently in Debian experimental) comes with a new API (v5)
and geoclue will fail to build against it. IMHO the whole gpsd provider
should be rewritten - parsing NMEA is not really the best way to handle
gps data. Enough examples should be shipped with gpsd's source code.

don't hesitate to ask if you have questions :)

[Bug 893309] [NEW] FTBFS against latest libdpkg-dev

2011-11-21 Thread Michael Terry
Public bug reported:

I was looking at why haskell-dpkg is FTBFS and noticed that the package
is designed for earlier versions of libdpkg. It assumes that 'struct
pkginfo' has 'name' and 'next' members.

As far as I can see, nowadays, it has an 'arch_next' member which I
assume is the analog to 'next'. Not sure what the analog to 'name' is.

It should be updated to build against the version of libdpkg in precise.

[Bug 892919] Re: Date and Time settings have no Clock Tab.

2011-11-21 Thread Tanocelen
Okay, so it is a problem of Unity. I'll transform it into an Opinion
then:

I think the Settings should be reachable within all desktop sessions
that make use of Unity and the indicator. Not just Ubuntu but also
e.g. Cairo.

Calling:
$ gnome-control-center indicator-datetime
manually, does not work if you do not know what to call. (Now I now as a
switched to Ubuntu).

[Bug 880476] Re: after update to kernel 3.0.0-13 ubuntu 11.10 does not start

2011-11-21 Thread riprop
Hi,
I also confirm same problem.

Couple minutes ago I installed updates with Update manager, and after restart
could not boot any more.
I selected 3.0.0-12 in grub and booted as usually.

Using Lubuntu 11.10, fresh installation.

I this can help, my root partition is Luks crypted, and system halted BEFORE
asking for password (this also mean that logs could not be written to /var/log
) .
I saw some alert about radeon, this could be lead to problem.

Best Regards

[Bug 836250] Re: [Oneiric] [Regression] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops

2011-11-21 Thread Olaf Geibig
I wonder if I shall turn my 11n off as long as this isn't fixed. I can
connect to my AP without problems and the connection never drops, but I
also have these excessive retries in 11n mode. When connected in g mode
I have faster pings but network transfer is slower when copying a file
by FTP from my NAS. So should I not worry about the lost packets and use
n and enjoy the slightly better performance? Or can I suffer from data
loss?

For the stats: oneiric 64 bit desktop, kernel 3.0.0-13-generic on a

Re: [Bug 874521] Re: cannot detect sound card

2011-11-21 Thread Peter Gordon
Hi there,

The fix below worked, but the bug has returned: after the most recent
kernel update (I think) I no longer have sound through my line-out jack.
Uname -r returns: 2.6.35-31-generic-pae, but I see in the Synaptic
Package Manager that only up to 2.6.35-30 is listed for driver modules.

Will I just need to wait for an alsa driver update?

Thanks for your help,
Peter

Please restore the original sound drivers (uninstall/remove the ones
that you manually added), then use

Acknowledged 'ubuntu-docs' probably isn't the correct assignment, maybe
it's possible to find a central way, e.g. 'wiki-docs', to report such
findings. Thanks.

[Bug 893316] [NEW] Ubuntu connects to wrong network after sleep

2011-11-21 Thread Jason Mansour
Public bug reported:

When coming back from sleep, the system tries to connect to a different
WiFi network, although the previously used network is still available.
Since I usually don't have credentials for the other networks in range,
a window pops up, which is very annoying. I'd expect
ubuntu/NetworkManager to try to connect to the previously used network
first. I believe this was the default behavior before Oneric, but I'm
not sure.

(I would guess gnome 2.xx used to coordinate going to sleep/waking up
with NetworkManager, and this was removed/broken with the transition to
Gnome 3 or Oneric. Now, NetworkManager just sees that the connection is
lost, and does what it always does, and picks the next available
network.)
