2012-10-20 Thread npp
Hi all files now uploaded - there are numerous folders in there as well
- let me know if anything from those need uploading. There was a file
called apt-clone_system_state.tar.gz which was 650KB but wouldn't
upload, the uploaded said it was an empty file, which clearly it isn't.

Cheers.

module. I had to install it too on this installation to gather the data.

[Bug 814833] Re: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy

2012-10-20 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
I prefer to launch full screen. It is taking 9 seconds on first load,
and about 4 seconds on subsequent loads. My settings are all default
except that I do prefer to launch full-screen.

My goal is to launch my applications as fast as possible. After I hit
the super-key, I don't want to have to wait (at all) to begin typing (to
locate an application).

I find myself typing too early (after hitting the super key), and having
to backspace because the Unity dash didn't receive the first few letters
I've typed.

current date has events 'A B C D E', and the user clicks on a date with
associated events 'X Y Z', then indicator-datetime will show the events
'X Y Z D E' with the last two events grayed out. Tested on quantal.

[Bug 1069176] [NEW] System Settings focus behaviour is very inconsistent and confusing

2012-10-20 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Using the power cog menu to open System Settings works if it is either
not already open, or nothing has been selected. Otherwise, even if you
are in the main view, it will not appear, but the Unity Launcher entry
will instead get urgency (wiggle). This can be confusing and difficult
to notice since your eyes are drawn to the opposite side of the screen.
The effect is that it doesn't seem to do anything at all. Even when you
know that this is the case, it is actually quite difficult to get used
to, because it might be ten hours since you used the volume control and
now you can no longer open System Settings.

What I would like to happen, is that if you select Audio Settings from
the Audio Menu, then the System Settings dialog is opened or focused. If
you open the power cog menu and select System Settings, the System
Settings dialog is presented. This is not currently what happens. In
other words; it should not just launch. It should also Focus If Open.

Quick and easy steps to reproduce:

1) Click the power cog and select System Settings.
2) Click outside the System Settings dialog so that it is completely hidden by
a maximized window behind it.
3) Perform step 1 again.
4) Notice that System Settings is focused, as you would expect.

5) Select an entry in the dialog, such as Sound.
6) Hide the dialog again by clicking the maximized window as before.
7) Open System Settings from the power cog again.
8) Notice that this time, the dialog does not appear, but that the icon on the
launcher has urgency. (wiggles)

9) Click the icon in the launcher to bring System Settings in focus.
10) In the System Settings dialog, go back to the main view by using the
breadcrumbs.
11) As before, hide System Settings by clicking on a maximized window in the
background.
12) Reopen System Settings from the power cog.
13) Notice that while the dialog looks identical to how it did in step 1, it
can no longer be reopened from the power cog.

[Bug 1069179] [NEW] Toggle for autocomplete is missing

2012-10-20 Thread Lucas David-Roesler
Public bug reported:

When using libreoffice calc, it always autocompletes values in a column.
For example, if I begin a column with 2b, then in any other cell in
that column if I start typing 2 it will automatically try to complete
it to 2b. Searching online suggests that there is supposed to be
toggle for this behavior in the ToolsAutoCorrect Options menu.

Re: [Bug 1067899] Re: ubiquity fails installing lubuntu 12.10 ppc

2012-10-20 Thread J.-S. Farinet
Thanks for the help: I tried the command you suggested but i got this
error msg:

ERROR: The launchpadlib Python module is not installed. This
functionality is not available.

Now, i'm only a simple user and it's a bit difficult for me to know
how and where to look for what . . . I'm sorry for my ignorance. Would
you be so patient and eventually guide me thru?

Cheers!

2012/10/20 melchiaros melchia...@aol.com:
 @ J.S.

Instead of attaching the logs manually you can try

 apport-collect 1067899

When there is a message from terminal that a launchpadlib is missing(or
a other lib) than please install them manually.

When apport is not able to attach the needed logs from comment #3 than
 please attach them manually.

Anyway, you have hit an interesting problem. It will be of wider interest for
powerpc people to get a deeper look at. It would be nice of you to work
with..., you know someone with the hardware is needed.

[Bug 1023645] Re: ndiswrapper-dkms 1.57-1ubuntu1: ndiswrapper kernel module failed to build [error: ‘struct kernel_stat’ has no member named ‘cpustat’]

2012-10-20 Thread Roger Olivé
Yes, this would be the most straightforward solution.

However, I arranged it the other way (using dkms) to automatise the
process when upgrading the kernel. Wouldn't it stop working if the
Ubuntu team released, let's say, a 3.5.0-18 kernel update? Then make +
make install would be necessary for every kernel upgrade.

The idea is that dkms handles the build process automatically each time
you upgrade the kernel, so you don't have to worry about the module not
working every time you boot after a new kernel install.

Correct me if I'm wrong, please. :)

Anyway, I'm glad you got it working!

[Bug 1069184] [NEW] wrong inormation about the diskspace in the syseminformation

2012-10-20 Thread dirkstolle
Public bug reported:

In the systems information overview the diskspace is not shown correctly.
There are shown 3,2 TB of diskspace, which could not be true.
The system harddisk is about 64 GB (SSD). There are also 2 other harddisks
installed. One with 500 GB and the other has 250 GB. So even if i summerize all
together it wont be 3,2 TB at all.

Could it be a bug? Or is it because the sda is a solid state disk?

[Bug 1069183] [NEW] LightDM KDE Greeter loads the desktop half a minute after login

2012-10-20 Thread Elias Kouskoumvekakis
Public bug reported:

I just did a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.10 on my workstation.

After I input my password and press enter instead of instantly loading
the desktop, I must wait almost half a minute before the KDE icons
appear and then the desktop loads normally. Log-in used to take just 2-3
seconds while showing the KDE icons.

Here's my lightdm.log:
http://lupo.teamdac.com/lightdm.log

You can see that it takes about 25 seconds for the greeter to start loading my
desktop
...
[+9.24s] DEBUG: Greeter start authentication for lupo
[+9.25s] DEBUG: Started session 1711 with service 'lightdm', username 'lupo'
[+9.25s] DEBUG: Session 1711 got 1 message(s) from PAM
[+9.25s] DEBUG: Prompt greeter with 1 message(s)
[+9.25s] DEBUG: Continue authentication

[+35.34s] DEBUG: Greeter closed communication channel
[+35.34s] DEBUG: Session 1318 exited with return value 0
[+35.34s] DEBUG: Greeter quit
...

Also lightdm writes the file x-0-greeter.log which might contain info about the
problem:
http://lupo.teamdac.com/x-0-greeter.log

This bug doesn't happen if I enable autologin from the System Settings-Login
Screen-General tab. In this case autologin is very fast without any delays and
no x-0-greeter.log file is generated at all. Here's my lightdm.log when
autologin is enabled:

[Bug 1068422] Re: Software-properties mirror selection may pick an out-of-date mirror

2012-10-20 Thread Marten Gorodetsky
Changing mirrors didn't do anything for me, but the forum thread Arup
linked to had the fix for me. After doing:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update

I was finally able to install skype with:

sudo apt-get install skype

So it looks like even though I got the same error message my problem was
different. This was on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 x64 using Wubi
and I didn't do anything other than adding the Canonical Partners
repository before trying to install Skype.

[Bug 379367] Re: Gedit adding a newline at the end of file should be configurable

2012-10-20 Thread John Beatty
I came across this bug while trying to understand bash. If I do

$ printf %s$IFS  out.txt

and look at out.txt in gedit, I am quite unaware that $IFS has the
newline character as its last character, because gedit thinks aha, this
file already has a newline character as its last character, so I needn't
display it. Just to be sure I opened out.txt in hexedit before opening
it in gedit. I believe policy should be divorced from mechanism - if I
want a newline I should be able to add it myself; and have gedit show
whether it's there or not.

Incidentally, in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=625955
Jesse van den Kieboom has provided a patch, but I'm not enough of a
linux guru to know how to apply it, and I don't see an entry for it in
gconf-editor.

[Bug 1066449] Re: kernel panic happens in xubuntu 12.10

2012-10-20 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
ill, regarding your comments
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1066449/comments/26 :
I never built it. I only installed it from the mainline site, and then there
was no output on screen after I attempted to boot it, same as 3.6. The screen
only said that sparse files aren't allowed because of grub and it stopped
booting.

I beg your pardon. I ment, could you please provide the terminal output
from your attempt to install the mainline kernels, after uninstalling
nvidia-current, rebooting, and then attempting the install?

[Bug 1066353] Re: No sound after suspend (Ubuntu 12.10 64bit)

2012-10-20 Thread mlaverdiere
I did other tests with kernels in mainline, and here's the results:

-with all Quantal kernel 3.5 and below, sound works fine (including
3.5.0-030500)
-with Quantal kernel 3.6.2 kernel, sound is not working

Otherwise, I've tested the regular (as provided in official repository)
3.5.0-17 kernel with KDE (so nothing from Unity/Gnome loaded), and the
problem is also occurring.

[Bug 1004597] Re: Sudden hard reset (reboot) caused by VirtualBox

2012-10-20 Thread finisdiem
This bug also affects me. I've tried installing virtual book versions
4.1.12, 4.1.18, 4.1.22, and 4.2. They have all caused a sudden system
reboot wile installing or starting a VM. I've tried disabling 2d and 3d,
not using usb, not using extensions or additions.

I am installing from amd64 host to x86 XP guest.

I have finally got it to work. after Ubuntu Server upgrade to 12.10 from
12.04 i installed Virtualbox 4.1.18 with extentions and it crashed
again. I was using the nvidaia-current driver. i changed to the open
xorg driver and i have been able to install and run virtualbox VMs
without it crashing.

Seems to be a nvidia issue. I cant use the new desktop enviornment with
the nvidia driver disabled. Has anyone found a soluiton to this?

I had the same problem after updating to 12.10, with software-center always
crashing immediately. I fixed it by changing line 33 of
/usr/share/software-center/softwarecenter/config.py from
class SoftwareCenterConfig(object, SafeConfigParser):
to

[Bug 1062166] Re: screen goes dark although screensaver is switched off

2012-10-20 Thread emptythevoid
I'm not certain which one thing fixed it, but here's what I did:

Open dconf editor from the Dash
Click on the Find, and type Power.
Here's what I've got set:
idle-brightness = 0
idle-dim-time = 0
sleep-display-ac = 0
sleep-display-battery = 0
sleep-inactive-ac-timeout = 0
sleep-inactive-battery-timeout = 0

Try setting those and see if it helps you. Again, not exactly sure
which one thing fixes it - haven't taken the time to check. And
ultimately, one shouldn't have to do this in the first place.

2012-10-20 Thread RoundSparrow
Ok - I have a possible explination of why this problem is not more
widespread.

My Ubuntu 12.10 x64 system, clean install was booting just fine... until
i started to activate the Mobile Broadand (GSM) connection.

The WiFi / Bluetooth is not the source of the problem. Only the
Lenovo's equiped with the optional WWAN modem have the problem!

[Bug 1069168] Re: Banshee crashed on end of song. Not reproductible.

2012-10-20 Thread Dave Lentz
I'm going to assume the bug is limited to banshee, so I'm assigning it
to that package for that moment. I know you haven't found a sure way to
reproduce it, but if it happens with other music players, let us know.

To get a better idea what is happening, please install banshee-dbg package and
run banshee in debug mode from now on using the following command:
banshee --debug

When the crash occurs, please post/attach the output from the terminal.

[Bug 575000] Re: Conflict between webcam and wifi

2012-10-20 Thread expos
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected quantal

** Description changed:

Hi, I'm using Kubuntu 9.10, tried Kubuntu 10.04, same problem there. Also
tried opensuse 11.2, also same problem there.
Problem: When I start using my webcam, my wifi disconnects and is unable to
restart. On the other hand, my webcam only works with wifi disabled.
  Those are the components concerned:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501USB Wireless
Adapter

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 04f2:b022 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd Gateway USB 2.0
Webcam

Workaround: Disabled uvcvideo by blacklisting it. When I want to use my
webcam, I need a Cable-LAN connection and starting it manually with sudo
  modprobe uvcvideo

First I thought, this bug is related to bug #435352, but as this seems
to be solved with an kernel-update, and mine isn't, it seems to be a new
one. In var/log/debug and messages there is no suspicious entry about
that. This bug affects all applications that use my webcam (Kopete,
  Skype, luvcview, etc.)

Here's the difference when using luvcview:

  WIFI disabled:

   luvcview 0.2.4

[Bug 1051144] Re: help.ubuntu.com/11.10/ubuntu-help/index.html

2012-10-20 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I can't duplicate in Chromium but I do have this problem with Firefox.
My accept languages are en-US; en.

https://help.ubuntu.com/11.10/ubuntu-help/index.html.en does the right
thing so it doesn't make much sense.
