[Bug 1797734] Re: slow calculator startup

2020-02-22 Thread Richard Bruce Baxter
This problem persists on Ubuntu 20.04. See this proposal to remove the
snap version of the package: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/proposal-
for-ubuntu-20-04lts/12969/92

Moreover, the apt package cannot currently be found on Ubuntu 20.04.
Diagnosis:

sudo snap remove gnome-calculator
sudo apt-get install gnome-calculator

Expected output:

apt gnome-calculator successfully installed.

Actual output:

No apt package "gnome-calculator", but there is a snap with that name.
Try "snap install gnome-calculator"

[Bug 1711407] Re: unregister_netdevice: waiting for lo to become free

2020-02-22 Thread Jim Heald
Hi! I'm on Debian and I'm getting this issue with the following kernel:
4.19.0-8-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.98-1 (2020-01-26)

I feel like this isn't the best place to report this, but can someone
point me to the best place to report this issue? Can't find any
discussion on it from the past year but I don't know how I could have
triggered it...

[Bug 1861936] Re: Raspberry Pi 3 network dies shortly after a burst of SD card IO and network load ((lan78xx): transmit queue 0 timed out)

2020-02-22 Thread Hui Wang
Hi mlx,

>From the calltrace, it looks like the transmit doesn't work when problem
happens, it is probably a problem of the driver lan78xx.c or a problem
of the usb host driver.

So when problem happens, does the other usb ports still work? and the
latest kernel -1019 version integrated a couple of patches to lan78xx.c,
you could do a test with -1019 kernel.

And looks like other people also met the similar problem (at least similar
calltrace):
https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/search.php?keywords=lan78xx+transmit+queue+0+timed+out=54addf297812dfe931b66a621bcae444

And I am still trying to reproduce this problem.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2020-02-22 Thread chrm
This bug has 3684 "heat". The next worst bug has just 614 heat. Both are
almost four years old. Both are tagged as "wishlist".

One and a half year ago it was (paraphrased) "this fix is easy when the
epoch feature is done" and (quote) "For the record, the epoch feature is
being actively worked on and it's not that far hopefully".

Now (quote) "It is likely this will be picked up after 20.04 as a new
cycle starts". Not certain, just likely.

To me this sounds like you are just pushing technical debt in front of
you ad infinitum.

[Bug 88746]

2020-02-22 Thread Mywifiextsetupus
log files of different OSes caused and not caused by this problem

The OSes:
1. Windows 7
2. Windows XP
3. FreeBSD 9.3
are not affected by "new high-speed USB device number" problem. They works fine.
The FreeBSD 9.3 just report about some error for umass:

4. cinnamon mint 15 (3.8.0-19-generic) works fine, but kern.log file is spamed
by this messages:

Oct 21 13:54:17 kes-desktop kernel: [ 4260.504011] usb 1-2: new high-speed USB
device number 34 using ehci-pci
Oct 21 13:54:17 kes-desktop kernel: [ 4260.572330] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to
enumerate USB device on port 2
Oct 21 13:54:17 kes-desktop kernel: [ 4260.788218] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to
enumerate USB device on port 2

5. ubuntu 12.04 also is not affected.

These has problems:
1. ubuntu 14.04. It is loading too slow and after loading I can not visit sites
that uses adobe_flash plugin. The browser is halted (see print_screen:
ubuntu-14.04-ishalted.png).

2. cinnamon-mint-16
3. Fresh installation of 17.1

I also want to check how work mint 14 and 13, but I can not install them
due to the installer error

The detailed log messages for those systems see at attachment

It seems some bug is introduced to the new kernels. If someone give me detaided
instructions how to use bisect and how to compile/install kernels from source I
can complete that.
Thank you.

[Bug 305460]

2020-02-22 Thread lichray
The example in this bug is not as severe and frequent as the one in bug
44841. Users are more likely to encounter this issue when adding a new
API to existing interface or type erasure.

Calling this a "well-known issue" is irresponsible. The issue
significantly increases the bar to learners to consume and accept new
paradigms in the language.

The issue has not been fixed for ten years. It is a shame rather than
some arcane knowledge that worth to be proud of.

MSVC has no such issue. The error message reads as "undefined reference
to Class::that_virtual_function."

Some possible fixes:

1. Adjust the error message to say, "The first non-inline, non-pure function
may not have a definition in ."
2. Add extra information to name the key function, and pass it to the linker,
generate an error message to match MSVC's quality.

I have a similar problem on my Dell laptop.

And Even in poweroff state, the battery can't be charged. If I press F2
to enter the BIOS setup, it shows the battery is 0%, can't be charged in

I don't know if it has sth to do with the OS (linux), it looks more like
a BIOS issue or hardware issue?

Now I use my laptop as a desktop computer.

[Bug 1864338] [NEW] samba does not install cleanly on machine with no IPv4 address

2020-02-22 Thread Kevin Otte
Public bug reported:

Feb 22 18:47:14 athens systemd[1]: nmbd.service: Failed with result 'timeout'.
Feb 22 18:47:14 athens systemd[1]: Failed to start Samba NMB Daemon.

Workaround is to disable the nmbd service then 'apt -f install' to
complete the installation.

Suggest not enabling nmbd by default as most modern workloads do not
require it. Otherwise preinst may need to perform the check for IPv4
addresses and do the disable.

[Bug 1864112]

2020-02-22 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Actually, my problem is your lack of empathy regarding the matter.

I have tried the desktop scaling at 2X and it worked very poorly
compared to doubling the DPI. For example, Flameshot didn't work with
the desktop scaling feature enabled, while it works great at a 192 DPI.
Also, in my three 4K monitor setup, if I moved my mouse past the bottom
edge of the bottom middle monitor, the whole desktop would scroll down
as though that desktop had an additional 2160 pixels that shouldn't even
be there. So your suggestions offer more bugs than the DPI solution I've
discovered.

I use to be a fan of desktop scaling, but not now. I'm a fan of
increasing DPI. It works better. Try it in a multiple 4K monitors setup
like mine. You'll see.

The bottom line is, whether you are sympathetic or not, is that the
dialog shouldn't place priority on being the exact same width of the
button that's clicked. Instead it should accommodate what ever the font-
size is (even if the font-size is due to a 192 DPI).

I wish you had 3 or 4 4K monitors to deal with. Until then, I don't
expect to persuade you much.

Believe it or not, I report this stuff to help make KDE better. This is
minor issue, but the developers need to take what I'm saying into
consideration as they design these GUIs, instead of wasting the
available horizontal space to ensure the dialog is not bigger than the
button that was clicked to launch the dialog.

Anyway, I doubt I've persuaded you, but thanks anyways for at least
reading what I've wrote.

[Bug 1864112]

2020-02-22 Thread Nate-b
I understand that it is frustrating, for sure.

However, note that your reason for not using the official scaling system
is bugginess, yet the alternative method you've chosen also has bugs
(e.g. this one). Clearly these bugs are less severe than the ones you're
avoiding. However it's at least important for those bugs keeping you
from using the official system to be reported or else it can't improve
to the point were it's adequate for your needs. If you feel the need to
use a workaround in the meantime, I understand, but please file bugs on
the issues that are preventing you from using the official system.

Looking at the issues you mention:

> Flameshot didn't work with the desktop scaling feature enabled, while it works
> great at a 192 DPI.
Sounds like a bug in Flameshot. Can you file it with the developer of that app?

Wow, that sounds bizarre! I've never heard of this happening before. Can you
file a bug if you haven't already?

Hope that helps!

[Bug 1864112]

2020-02-22 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Nate,

You don't have to increase the DPI in order to reproduce this issue. All that
is necessary is to increase the default font-size, as I show here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxgBJaI5yRQ

Hopefully, you agree that people should be able to increase the font-
size of their desktop environment and that dialogs should be able to
accommodate those larger font-sizes in a reasonable way. To me,
ellipsifying should be a last resort way for dealing with larger font-
sizes (especially given that there is not tool-tip to even reveal the
entirety of what's been ellipsified). Utilizing available screen space
should come before ellipsification. Yes, I'm making these words up as I
go, but you know what I mean.

I'll take your advise on reporting those other issues as well. However,
I firmly believe that what I'm reporting here is a legitimate
inflexibility, (minor and petty as it seems).

[Bug 1817358] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 netboot installation failed during loading of installer component libc6-udeb

2020-02-22 Thread Mélodie
Hello,

is the package installed in your versions?
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/libc6-udeb

can you type in terminal " sudo apt-cache policy libc6-udeb " (without
the quotes) to check?

If it's installed what do you get with "dpkg -L libc6-udeb" ? (Then
compare the list of files with the ones you can find in the package you
can download from the packages.ubuntu page... just extract the content
of the deb in some directory, using file-roller).

[Bug 1864329] [NEW] too long netbios name shouldn't be a fatal error

2020-02-22 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Public bug reported:

The container I'm using to test the fix for
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1864324 has a
somewhat long hostname:

$ hostname -f
focal-bind9-upgrade-test.lxd

Samba by default will try to use the host part as its netbios name. Such
names have a length limit, which is a bit short.

When using testparm, this is flagged:
$ testparm
Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf
Loaded services file OK.
WARNING: The 'netbios name' is too long (max. 15 chars).
...

But is not a fatal error.

The samba postinst, however, uses (for reasons unknown to me) "samba-
tool testparm", and that has a different behavior:

[Bug 1864329] [NEW] too long netbios name shouldn't be a fatal error

2020-02-22 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Public bug reported:

The container I'm using to test the fix for
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1864324 has a
somewhat long hostname:

$ hostname -f
focal-bind9-upgrade-test.lxd

Samba by default will try to use the host part as its netbios name. Such
names have a length limit, which is a bit short.

When using testparm, this is flagged:
$ testparm

$ samba-tool testparm
INFO 2020-02-22 21:16:42,905 pid:37370

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2020-02-22 Thread Dik
It is not a bug, its a feature. To speed up the typing. Set the layout
change on CapsLock. (In a case you need old caps behavior, you get it
with shift + Caoslock)

[Bug 1863116] Re: debian/rules editconfigs does not work on s390x to change s390x only configs

2020-02-22 Thread Frank Heimes
Let me provide some more background on this (getting some lines back
from the initial bug description):

On an (as of today) updated focal installation (on s390x) I needed to
install the crossbuild-essential-amd64 package, but it's not installable
and it seems to be the same for all "crossbuild-essential-*" packages.
It's btw. the same on Eoan, too.

Now, I ran into this because I want to do a kernel test compile with a modified
kernel option. If one modifies a kernel option, "fakeroot debian/rules
updateconfigs" needs to be called.
I was told by the kernel team that at some point in time (somewhere between
bionic and eoan) CROSS_COMPILE setting became needed to address
architecture-dependent tests in Kconfig options. Hence cross toolchains are now
required.
At least amd64 is needed, I don't know yet if more is needed (but I assume it's
more).

Right now - as workaround - I need to do the kernel config changes on my
local amd64 workstation run updateconfigs and can then proceed with
build and test on the s390x target platform.

But it must be possible to prepare and compile a kernel with a modified
kernel option on a single target platform.

I woke the laptop from sleep and pressed "space" key to unlock. Computer
went crazy and started a loop of trying to display the password field.
Also, there were multiple dropdowns on top of each other for the system

I use variety, but i am not sure if this is the cause or it is some
gnome-shell bug or both.

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2020-02-22 Thread Dik
I would say, that change on Keypress _must_ be the default behavior,
because in an opposite case, there are problems of typing, if toogle in
on CapsLock, and you are typing rapidly.

[Bug 1864317] [NEW] CapsLock toggles group on keyrelease instead of keypress

2020-02-22 Thread Dik
Public bug reported:

The behavior is odd and is a reason of a lot of errors due the typing.
Moreover it is not possible to switch rapidly between the layouts,
particularly, when typing something in both idioms. O working with vim.

How to restore the old behavior to change the layout on Keypress?

I'm using Ubuntu Xenial,

[Bug 1864315] [NEW] applet crashes on execution, needs brutal choke to end

2020-02-22 Thread Gunther Bolte
Public bug reported:

Simple Scan worked perfectly for me today, but only once. The second use and
consequent tests resulted in a fail.
The printer/scanner is turned on, the applet start is inconspicuous but when I
push "scan" the circle of dots keeps on running eternally. I can only stop it
by brutally choking the process.
Up to now I tried: Update, system restart, complete removal and fresh
installation - to no avail.

[Bug 1864313] [NEW] "Software and Updates" UI hang.

2020-02-22 Thread Clinton H
Public bug reported:

1) Ubuntu 19.10
2) 0.98.5
3) I clicked the Software and Updates icon, the Software and Updates window
appears. If I start clicking on different tabs, the UI hangs. I think the hang
is because the process is downloading data and my internet connection(64k) is
slow. Could you fork the download process, so that the UI remains responsive?

[Bug 1851188] Re: Failed to create a partition table - install failed

2020-02-22 Thread Leó Kolbeinsson
Finally got a successfull install on Intel NUC 8i3BEK - secure boot-

Also had a failure with VirtualBox and Dell Inspiron 3521 both using
"legacy" boot moods.

Could this possible be part of the problem?

Also tried another distro using Calamares - Endeavour OS- which failed to erase
disk as well.
On their web site
https://endeavouros.com/docs/installation/calamares-offline-installer-tips/
they recommend creating partition scheme before running Calamares install!!

[Bug 1864314] [NEW] Please include 32 bit i965-va-driver-shaders in Focal

2020-02-22 Thread kisak

Hello, the current Steam client's remote play client is 32 bit and wants
to use libva for hardware accelerated decode. My understanding is that
i965-va-driver-shaders is a support package to do this on Intel

Please evaluate this package for the short list of supported 32 bit
packages in Focal.

[Bug 1864204] Re: nondeterministic failure when no keyring backends are available

2020-02-22 Thread Dan Streetman
** Description changed:

  [impact]

when no backends are available for python-keyring, it will sometimes
silently ignore all requests to set or get credentials, and sometimes it
will raise RuntimeError for all requests.

  [test case]

when there are no backends, there are 2 built-in backends that will be
the only ones available, the 'chainer' backend and the 'fail' backend.
The 'fail' backend always has priority 0, while the 'chainer' backend
has priority 10 if it contains any actual backends, and priority 0 if it
is empty. So in the situtation where there are no actual backends, both
'chainer' and 'fail' will have priority 0. Since the 'backends' class
stores its backend implementation instances in a python set(), which is
unordered, it is non-deterministic which of those backends are used at
  any given time.

Since the behavior is non-deterministic, simply trying this multiple
times may result in each behavior. Rebooting or logout/login can help
  'switch' the behavior.

  >>> import keyring
  >>> [keyring.backend.get_all_keyring()]

the above python code will show the current list of backends, and since
they both have the same priority (in this situation) the first in the
list will be used. If the list looks like:

  [[,
  ]]

with 'ChainerBackend' first, all keyring functions will return silently
  with None, e.g.:

  >>> keyring.set_password('test', 'test', 'test')
  >>> keyring.get_password('test', 'test')
  >>>

with 'fail.Keyring' first, all keyring functions will raise
  RuntimeError:

  >>> import keyring
  >>> [keyring.backend.get_all_keyring()]
  [[,

  >>> keyring.set_password('test', 'test', 'test')

  [regression potential]

TBD as this is still an upstream bug

  [scope]

This affects Eoan and later, including upstream.

This does not affect Bionic or earlier, as they do not have the commit
  that introduces the bug.

this was introduced upstream by commit
0114733e91f249246c8fec9e659cd7ba2388ea0d which was first included in
  version 16.1.0.

  [other info]

this affects any application that uses the python-launchpadlib library,
  as that internally uses keyrings.
+
+ Opened upstream PR to at least make the behavior deterministic:
+
+ Also adds new 'NoKeyringError' so callers can catch that specific error
+ instead of raising generic RuntimeError.

Same issue on latest Ubuntu Focal with GNOME Software 3.35.91. I have
tried multiple different deb packages (Skype, Visual Studio Code,
BlueJeans etc.) and there was exactly the same problem with all of them.

I had the same issue and I had to reinstall 19.04, but anyway I want to
use the latest Ubuntu, so I afraid to install it again.

Question: How can I check compatibility before updating?

[Bug 1776044] Re: nvidia-340 crashes display in 18.04 Bionic when no Nvidia GPU present

2020-02-22 Thread Keith Elliston
I have a similar issue. Installed Ubuntu 18.04 on a Ryzen 7 2700x with
an old Geforce 8600 GTS. Using the built-in drivers, the video card
stalls (took me a long time to figure out it was the video card, after
going through all the Ryzen issues). I installed the nvidia-340 as
recommended, and the system hangs on boot before the graphic login. I
removed the nvidia drivers, and reinstall the default, and it works
again, but stalls. I know this is the video stalling, as I can ssh into
the machine, and all is working fine on the computer, just the video on
the hardware is stalling.

[Bug 1864303] [NEW] Removing the e1000e module causes a crash

2020-02-22 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo x1 Carbon Gen5 and when it initially came out if you
left the onboard NIC (e1000e) module loaded it would suck CPU/battery
life so I have it removed in rc.local on boot.

In 5.4 (also happens on 5.4.0.15.18 which I'm running from proposed
right now), this is what happens when the module is unloaded:
