[Bug 606889] Re: fsck "recovers" ext4 data that reappears after reboot
I consider this mystical solved, please mark the bug report as invalid. What happened? I have 2 harddrives, one spare where I sometimes dd-copy my first harddrive to. I did this the first time after my ubuntu 10.04 install the day before yesterday. With two harddrives being identically, their UUIDs were so too and bootloader and kernel decided to use the wrong one (the first time where my data disappeared) and the right one (the time where my data reappeared). Which one the kernel chose was quite random and not visible during boot so I didn't realize it was working on the wrong drive. [Bug 606889] [NEW] fsck "recovers" ext4 data that reappears after reboot
Public bug reported: I just had a really strange behavior here that is really hard to describe and find a summary for: I bootet my computer, fsck told me my /home's ext4 partition was corrupt. It ask me whether to recover myself or automatically. I had it recover automatically. It did so, the desktop bootet and soon I found out: my pidgin config, my latest firefox bookmarks, my evolution config was gone / broken. And all the files I had created yesterday were gone, too. My lost+found folder was filled with gconf xml files and firefox cache files (flash apples, images, css, ...). I'm not sure whether all the files broken / gone were there but at least I found some that were promising (for example my evolution config). So I copied the lost+found and tried to recover my files. There were lots of files and after a while I thought: Well, maybe fsck can do something here for me, let's reboot in single user mode and run fsck manually on the /home partition. I did so and fsck said everything was clean. I forced a check, but still no issues. I was disappointed because I thought I had to recover my lost files from lost+found myself, so I mounted /home and finished the boot. And then I found out: Everything was ok again! Nothing is missing, all files are back where they were! My latest created files, my configs, ... Everything works fine again! But all the things I have done trying to recover my "lost" files were undone. What happend here!? Did anyone have the same bug in the past? Any explainations? This bug is really really strange! [Bug 502278] [NEW] little suggestion for german translation
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hamster-applet When clicking on the hamster applet in the panel, a little popup opens. The german translation says "Tätigkeiten" for the drop down selection which means "tasks" (I don't know exactly what it's called in the english translation). Below there are the recordings for today and below that there are two buttons, one called "Neue Tätigkeit hinzufügen" (add a new task) and one "Übersicht" (overview). I think it's confusing as there are two different things entitled with "Tätigkeit(en)". When clicking on "Neue Tätigkeit hinzufügen", you cannot add a task you can then select in the drop down selection, but instead you can manually add a recording for a specific task and period of time. My proposal: Change the caption of the button below from "Neue Tätigkeit hinzufügen" (add a new task) to "Aufzeichnung hinzufügen" (add a recording). The issue is still NOT solved here on Ubuntu Jaunty RC! I have the same problem here with Ubuntu Jaunty RC! I talked to some pidgin-guy in the irc, he said that he cannot remember to have such "new feature", so this seems to be some ubuntu-specific change maybe together with the new notification system? [Bug 271522] Re: simple-backup-config [sbackup] crashes (seg-fault)
The computer's running current hardy sbackup version 0.10.4. Because of hardy I can't test the intrepid version, but on another pc, sbackup 0.10.5 runs perfectly on intrepid. I think it's not a bug in sbackup itself (otherwise we would maybe get a python exception) but somewhere else, maybe in GLib. There could be an error-handling missing and because of that we get a segfault instead of an exception. -- simple-backup-config [sbackup] crashes (seg-fault) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/271522 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 139363] Re: "Enter passphrase" for LUKS/cryptsetup breaks usplash
No, I propose this as solution for the bug, that the current patch for this issue isn't working if there's a fsck before. I'd like to know, whether you (evidently you know better all this usplash stuff than I) concern this as possible solution or not. Bug 55159 doesn't appear here. I tried your instructions in comment #6 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/55159/comments/6) but I couldn't see any value I entered. Having to enter all the passwords the same time in the boot process is an enhancement I didn't thought about. But I agree with you that this brings better user experience. Who's "the one" we have to propose moving the password prompts to the initramfs? -- "Enter passphrase" for LUKS/cryptsetup breaks usplash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139363 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 139363] Re: "Enter passphrase" for LUKS/cryptsetup breaks usplash
Where does this bug with fsck come from? Maybe the file the password is read from (/dev/.initramfs/usplash_outfifo) isn't empty but filled with the output of fsck? If so, why can't you just empty it before prompting for the password and then reading it? "cat" will block if (as it should be) there's no line or byte to read from the file. I don't know, if there's any commandline tool to do this properly, but something like this works: sudo -s echo -e "some stupid input just to have something within the file" > /dev/.initramfs/usplash_outfifo cat -u /dev/.initramfs/usplash_outfifo So maybe we can put something like this right before prompting for the password in order to empty the file the password is read from. -- "Enter passphrase" for LUKS/cryptsetup breaks usplash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139363 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 139363] Re: "Enter passphrase" for LUKS/cryptsetup breaks usplash
Is it right that the patch isn't working if there's a fsck running before the cryptodisks are started? Cause then something seems to fill the password input with some strange huge text, so the monitor is full of stars. Without fsck running before, I have no problems with the patched file. -- "Enter passphrase" for LUKS/cryptsetup breaks usplash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139363 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have the same issue here. It's really disturbing as I already invested some hours getting rid of all the other trouble, cryption caused together with usplash.
