[Bug 889513] Re: Forced menu visibility breaks keybindings in gnome-terminal

2012-04-15 Thread Andrew Aylett
This seems to affect only key combinations that have associated menus --
the ones I'm trying to use are Alt-F and Alt-B; Alt-D and Alt-# still
work.

[Bug 725927] [NEW] System freezes when trying to switch users

2011-02-27 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have an i865, when I try to switch between users, the system appears
to freeze -- if I switch from the session indicator applet, I just get a
black screen, if from the screensaver unlock window, that window stays
visible.

Pressing Alt-SysRq-k usually manages to kill (and restart) the original
X server, allowing me to log in again.

When I put the hard-disk into a different PC (with an i855) switching
users works (but xv is broken -- different issue).

[Bug 413954] Re: gnome-power-manager displays some values at 1/10 of the correct amount

2010-10-13 Thread Andrew Aylett
This is still a problem in Maverick: When I disconnect the power, the
notification says that I have 0:02 left, and a dialog pops up saying
Laptop battery critically low \n Computer will hibernate very soon
unless it is plugged in. The power actually lasts for the best part of
two hours, and the indicator applet reports this correctly. When I plug
the power back in, the indicator applet thinks it will only take a
matter of seconds to charge the battery, no matter how empty it is.

I appreciate that this is probably more an issue with my hardware than
with the software, but I've got to live with the hardware and I'd quite
like a fix in software :).

[Bug 653245] Re: Docky theme is absent!

2010-10-12 Thread Andrew Aylett
@Chris: while the theme has been removed from the trunk, it's still in
the sources shipped in Ubuntu, just disabled by the build system.
Removing the patch and rebuilding re-enables the theme for me.

On the subject of Docky, I'd disagree that running Do and Docky at the
same time is a regression-less workaround: Docky pick a different set of
applications to display, and doesn't appear to be as good at matching up
running applications to their launchers as Do. Also, I like having the
Do super-space shortcut loading in the dock, rather than taking up
screen space elsewhere. Docky doesn't use quite as much RAM (29M) as Do
(36M), but running them both together uses more than only running one.

Are you sure you won't reconsider, please, at least while the stable
version shipped with Ubuntu ships the theme.

[Bug 647127] [NEW] Persistent compositing glitches

2010-09-24 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Occasionally, a small area of the screen will be taken up by a patch of
grey which is drop-shadowed like a window and always sits on top of
other windows, but which persists across workspaces and is invisible to
xprop. It's often been triggered by transient objects (menus and
tooltips), but doesn't always take up the entire area of the menu. Less
often, I'll be left with pieces of an application window.

I'm using metacity with compositing enabled. The only way I've found to
remove the glitches is to interrupt the compositor -- either by turning
it off or by restarting the window manager.

I've included a screenshot of the latest occurrence.

[Bug 645960] [NEW] Screen not locked when lid closed during login

2010-09-23 Thread Andrew Aylett
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

When I close my laptop lid, the screen is usually locked when I open it
again. However, if I close the lid early in the login process, the
screen is not locked when I open it again.

Steps to reproduce:

1) At GDM prompt, enter credentials,
2) Immediately close the lid,
3) Wait while the login process completes,
4) Open the lid again.

What I expected:

The screen is locked.

What actually happens:

The screen is not locked.

[Bug 642213] [NEW] Workspace switcher applet displays stretched, in single row

2010-09-18 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After upgrading from Lucid, my workspace switcher applet will only
display in a single row, and appears stretched in my vertical panel (see
attachment).

If I switch to a horizontal panel, a single row appears correctly but I

workspaces arranged in a square.

[Bug 414451] Re: Video recording hangs cheese, disables camera

2010-05-15 Thread Andrew Aylett
I'm afraid it's worse -- trying to start up cheese in Lucid will cause
the X server to restart before any video is displayed. I'm not sure
whether it's the same bug or a different one; if it's different then it
obviously prevents me from testing this one :).

2010-05-11 Thread Andrew Aylett
Like it. Personally, I'd prefer it if the session indicators were the
other way around, as I keep that applet at the top of the panel and
would like the system menu at the top, but it's fantastic to have it
working at all :).

Thank you, everyone -- especially MarkieB -- for the effort you've put

[Bug 413954] Re: gnome-power-manager displays some values at 1/10 of the correct amount

This is rather more annoying in Lucid, as whenever I move from mains

automatically hibernate when it should.

[Bug 533758] Re: Button order/position should be part of Theme

Thomas Thurman has posted an entry on his blog relating to this bug:
http://blogs.gnome.org/metacity/2010/03/21/theme-based-button-layouts/

I should note that introducing a new theme version is seen as quite a
big deal, and the changes proposed for a version 3 format have been
quite large (like switching to SVG):

[Bug 548889] [NEW] Network Monitor doesn't use theme background colour

2010-03-26 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

The Network Monitor applet doesn't use the theme background when the
panel it's on is set to use the theme colour. It's fine when the colour
is set explicitly.

I've attached a partial screenshot: I expected the background of the
applet to match the surrounding panel.

I'm using the Dust theme with Ubuntu-Mono-Dark icons.

[Bug 451531] Re: xine no longer inhibits the screensaver

2010-01-24 Thread Andrew Aylett
You can (and I do) temporarily disable the screensaver using the command
`gnome-screensaver-command --inhibit`. If you run it in a terminal, the
screensaver won't activate until you kill it with Ctrl-C. Of course, I
then either forget to disable the screensaver before starting a video or
forget to re-enable it afterwards...

[Bug 451531] [NEW] xine no longer inhibits the screensaver

2009-10-14 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xine-ui

Before Karmic, playing video in xine would automatically suspend the
screensaver. Having updated to Karmic, the screensaver will now
activate while video is playing.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Find a video longer than your screensaver time-out (or adjust the timeout to
suit).
2) Play the video while not generating any keyboard or mouse activity

What happens:
The screensaver will activate after its time-out period.

What's expected:
The screensaver will not activate until after the video has ended.

[Bug 428115] [NEW] Computer no longer locks on suspend or lid close

2009-09-11 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Since a recent update to Karmic, my laptop doesn't lock when exiting
suspend or when the lid is lifted. Both worked fine in Jaunty and in
Karmic up to a few days ago (I've been updating more than weekly). The

does suspend (although I have an issue with using my hardware button to

[Bug 428119] [NEW] Hardware button no longer suspends laptop when locked

2009-09-11 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I have the power button on my laptop set to suspend the laptop. When
the laptop is open and unlocked, it works fine. When the screensaver is
active or the lid closed (I have lock on lid-close, but see #428115) the
button doesn't appear to do anything. This works in Jaunty and worked
in Karmic up until the last week or so.

Expected behaviour is that triggering the hardware button should always
suspend the computer. It's quite handy for when I've shut the lid
because I paused my work and then want to suspend to move elsewhere.

[Bug 414061] Re: Sound only through headphones after suspend

2009-08-23 Thread Andrew Aylett
Thanks for your help Andres. Unfortunately, I've tried the update and
it doesn't fix my issue. The patch seems to relate to an issue with the
headphones not working -- my headphones are fine and it's my speakers
that don't work.

[Bug 414434] [NEW] [Hewlett-Packard HP 2133] suspend/resume failure

2009-08-16 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Suspend/resume seems to be working on average every other time. It was
fine in Jaunty and Intrepid.

Symptoms are that the laptop doesn't get as far as suspending, freezing
in text-mode with the cursor at the top-left and no text on-screen.

I'm also having issues with sound not working on resume, see bug
#414061. That issue was also present in Jaunty with an updated kernel,
when suspend otherwise worked.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from
resuming properly.

[Bug 414451] [NEW] Video recording hangs cheese, disables camera

2009-08-16 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cheese

Steps to reproduce:

1) Start Cheese
2) File - Video
3) Start Recording
At this point, the video display goes black.
4) Click Stop Recording
At this point, the GUI freezes with the Stop Recording button pushed down.
5) Force-quit cheese
6) Restart cheese
At this point, cheese reports no video camera found. There is a 0-byte ogv
file with a date and time from ~step 3.

Expected: A video file is created, the application doesn't hang, the
camera is still usable afterwards.

[Bug 413954] [NEW] gnome-power-manager displays some values at 1/10 of the correct amount

2009-08-15 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Gnome-power-manager reports some battery statistics at 1/10 of their
true value, while others are correct. For example, the battery current
charge, last full charge and design charge are given at 2.4Wh, 2.4Wh and
2.6Wh when the battery was actually built as 26Wh. Similarly, the
discharge rate is given as ~1.1W, while it should be 11W. The charge
rate, however, is given at 65.5W, which is correct. This also leads to
wildly incorrect remaining charge times, with around 1m20s quoted for a
50% charge, which is roughly 40x out.

[Bug 414025] [NEW] Update to Karmic disables f-spot pictures screensaver

2009-08-15 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

When I upgraded to Karmic, I found that my screensaver had been switched
off.

I had been using the f-spot pictures screensaver, which doesn't seem to
be available in its previous form. When I went to the screensaver

Pictures screensaver, it uses all my pictures, rather than the tagged
set I was using before.

[Bug 404219] Re: Touchpad Tap Clicking Broken (scrolling also)

2009-08-15 Thread Andrew Aylett
I'm not convinced this is fixed properly -- I upgraded from Jaunty to
Karmic yesterday and found that my click and scroll settings had not
been migrated properly. I got 2.27.5 when I upgraded. I notice that
.90 is available now; I'm not sure how to go about testing again, but I
can very easily pull my old configuration files out of git if they might
help.

[Bug 414048] [NEW] Text sometimes displays surrounded by a black box

2009-08-15 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Occasionally, but often repeatably, text will display surrounded by
black boxes. This is most problematic when the text itself is black!

I'll attach a couple of screenshots, one from Gnome DO, the other from
Gramps. Both applications consistently show the bug, as does Notify
OSD. Firefox will sometimes block out text too, but mostly with non-
black text.

Gramps is the only application I've found so far which will consistently
block out black text. It only does it on one of its screens (the
pedigree screen) but makes that bit of UI almost completely unusable.

[Bug 414061] [NEW] Sound only through headphones after suspend

2009-08-15 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

After resuming from suspend, I only get sound through my headphone port.
A reboot is required to get sound through the speakers again.

I'm currently running a standard Karmic kernel and userland, didn't see
this issue in Jaunty with the Jaunty kernel, but because of an ext4 bug,
I had to run a vanilla mainline 2.6.30 kernel with the Jaunty userland,
at which point this bug appeared (upgrading to Karmic was an attempt to
resolve).

I can confirm that I only saw the bug after converting my filesystems,
not before when they were ext3 mounted as ext4. They are all converted
now, and I'm running a stock kernel to avoid the crashes so I'm not
best placed to test, sorry.

[Bug 385308] [NEW] Gramps' Pedigree view shows black rectangles instead of letters

2009-06-09 Thread Andrew Aylett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gramps

When displaying the 'Pedigree' view in Gramps, the text in the view is
rendered as black rectangles instead of letters.

I have tried selecting a different set of fonts from the 'Appearance'
preferences pane, to no avail. As my display is 170DPI, I also tried
setting the DPI down to 100 and turning the point size of the font up,
still making no difference.

I've attached a screenshot illustrating the issue.

[Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver

2009-05-07 Thread Andrew Aylett
I found that, while disabling screen blanking did stop the bug being
triggered in certain circumstances, wireless would still be disabled
whenever I used the XVideo extension. As most of what I use the laptop
for involves a mix of WiFi and XVideo, I reverted to Intrepid for a
while...

I've patched the Openchrome package from Jaunty to include the patch
from Trac and tested it briefly on my Jaunty install, and I can verify
that it fixed the issues I've seen, both with screen blanking and XV and
also with suspend/resume. It's in my PPA, for anyone who feels up to
trying it -- version 1:0.2.903+svn713-1ubuntu2~ppa3 is identical to
1:0.2.903+svn713-1ubuntu1 (which is the current Jaunty package) apart
from the two-line patch. I'm in the process of upgrading to Jaunty
again :).

I'll attach the debdiff, for reference.

[Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver

2009-05-07 Thread Andrew Aylett
Glad you liked it :).

Regarding why we didn't get an official release, I'd imagine it's
because the Openchrome driver is needed by more than just the HP2133;
while the patch might fix things for us, we've no way to tell that it
doesn't break things horribly for everyone else. I'd think it would be
more likely to be released to Jaunty once the patch has been accepted in
some form by the Openchrome devs -- as far as I can see, none of the
upstream devs have commented on it.

[Bug 298011] Re: Pulseaudio freezes in Totem, Severe audio lag and pausing

2009-05-05 Thread Andrew Aylett
You could try doubling it again, and maybe doubling the size of default-
fragment-size-msec.

Note that this is very much a workaround rather than a fix -- as far as
I can tell, it shouldn't be necessary. Then, I'm not entirely sure what
(if any) negative consequences there might be, apart from the obvious
slightly higher memory usage. I presume there's some rationale for the
defaults...

[Bug 298011] Re: Pulseaudio freezes in Totem, Severe audio lag and pausing

2009-05-03 Thread Andrew Aylett
I have a possible workaround: looking for a solution to a problem I've
been having which sounds quite similar, I first found this bug then
found that editing /etc/pulse/daemon.conf and doubling the default-
fragments parameter appears to have fixed things.

As an extra bonus, not only is pulseaudio not spiking cpu usage, it also
seems to be using less CPU while running normally...

[Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver

2009-03-26 Thread Andrew Aylett
I've found another way I can trigger the issue -- if I play a video
through xine using the xvideo extension:

a...@artemis:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-
10:59:51.351: computer_logicaldev_input_5 condition ButtonPressed = wlan
10:59:51.557: ssb__null__rfkill_b43_phy0_wlan property killswitch.state = 0
(0x0)

The physical button also controls Bluethooth, but Bluetooth is still
working (and the button still switches it on and off).

[Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver

2009-03-24 Thread Andrew Aylett
I'm no longer quite so sure it's a kernel issue -- I tried experimenting
with different kernels to see if I could work out where the breakage
occurred, but couldn't find a kernel that would make it work.

First, I tried building a vanilla 2.6.28.8 with a config file from the
ubuntu package. The issue was still there, meaning that it's not a
problem with the ubuntu patches. Next, I was about to try building a
2.6.27 kernel when I realised I could just install the Intrepid deb,
then further realised that the kernel was actually still on my system...
Booting with that kernel and the Intrepid userspace worked, but with the
Jaunty userspace it fails. While I don't know enough to say that
there's definitely no kernel issue, it does look like it's a userspace
change which has triggered the issue.

Any hints as to what I should try next?

[Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver

2009-03-24 Thread Andrew Aylett
I (think I) have a workaround -- the problem seemed to hit me when
unblanking the screen, so I disabled screen blanking and now I can at
least shut the laptop lid without losing wireless. It's not ideal, but
it helps... Ben, looking again at your report, I'm not sure this will
help you -- it seems that we have the same output in the logs, and the
same result, but that the trigger for the wireless going down is
different?

[Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver

2009-03-21 Thread Andrew Aylett
I'm also encountering this issue, with an upgrade to Jaunty that I ran
yesterday. On my machine, the wireless seems to die if I shut the lid.

When I open the lid again, I get these messages in /var/log/messages:
Mar 21 15:57:58 artemis kernel: [ 2366.81] b43-phy0: Radio hardware status
changed to DISABLED
Mar 21 15:58:03 artemis kernel: [ 2370.940071] b43-phy0: Radio turned on by
software
Mar 21 15:58:03 artemis kernel: [ 2370.940086] b43-phy0: The hardware RF-kill
button still turns the radio physically off. Press the button to turn it on.

This seems to be the same issue, but manifesting slightly differently.
I've got the UK variant of the HP2133.

Everything worked fine in Intrepid.
